The Led Zeppelin tribute where they do Stairway to Heaven is the best. Ann Wilson is the only person that can even come close to Robert Plant. There are tears in his eyes watching them sing it. You have to watch that one.
The Led Zeppelin tribute, which lots of commenters have alluded to, was about 40 years later. Ann was 63 when she sang the tribute, and absolutely nailed it.
They started out as a Led Zepplin cover band in the Seattle area, If I remember correctly (the town part). Nancy learned to wail to sound like Robert Plant. And the rest is history.
“Barracuda” was written by four members of Heart-lead singer Ann Wilson, singer-guitarist Nancy Wilson, guitarist Roger Fisher, and drummer Mike Derosier. The collaborative effort it took to write the song paid off when it hit Number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on September 3, 1977.
That's interesting since Heart sang "Stairway to Heaven" when Led Zep was honored at the 2012 Kennedy Center Awards and hit it out of the park. Robert Plant was known to hate it when people did it, but he was fine with Heart doing it because he knew they would do it right. You do have to have the right voice for it and Robert and Ann have it. Anybody who hasn't seen it, PLEASE check it out!
This was an attack song against a record promoter. Who inquired to their faces, if the "sisters" were in an incestuous relationship. They were furious, and Ann wrote the song that night in her hotel room while on tour
Oh, I didn't know that. I knew they were mad at a promoter, but I didn't know why. Ugh - how awful, to create false gossip (well, any gossip that hurts people) is the worst, especially for one's own advantage. Good for them for getting back with this song!
I was up close and personal when Ann Wilson sang at a private event for attorneys a few years ago. She was in her 60s and I’m not exaggerating. She sounded EXACTLY the same. I went home and played original recordings and she had sang in the same damn keys. She sings as easily as we breathe
Amber, you ask about what triggered the anger in this song. According to Ann, in an interview she said it was the result of an early interview with a rock journalist. During the interview, not knowing Ann and Nancy were sisters , he asked Ann about her relationship with Nancy, intimating they might have a lesbian relationship going on. He thought he had some hot news to report. Remember this is back in the mid 70s. Ann responded with incredulity “ you do know she’s my sister don’t you”? Well the journalist went ahead with his article and intimated in it some sort of relationship. Needless to say when Ann saw the article she was livid and this song is the result. It just goes to show nothing’s changed. Journalists were fake news, lying scumbags back then just like they are now.
Not exactly. The song is sbout The outrage and Nancy felt when they found out their record company's publicist who, as a publicity stunt released a made-up story of an incestuous affair involving Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson. Nancy and Ann were outraged. I believe it was one of the reasons they wound up getting out of their contract with that record company.
@@heronpage3883 That was the cover story of why they left Mushroom Records. They were demanding more money because of their success with the first album and they were tied to a two record deal.
Don't forget the part where a record company publicist was the one putting that idea into the head of the journalist. The publicist was going for "shock" and "buzz". Nothing new about trolling :(.
I toured with them for a bit when I drove for Ozark Mountain Leasing hauling their gear from venue to venue for a few months so enjoyed seeing and hearing them many times live and I can say they treated everyone very kindly, even us truck drivers.
My uncle Leon often managed to get into his fair share of backstage areas with a homemade printed lanyard badge and a fancy looking camera... he just had a pass that said "PRESS" on it, and this was one of the bands he has photos of from back stage. Sneaky bastard. xD
Do heart at the kennedy center. Led Zepplin in attendance for a ceremony for them and Heart sang their song of songs Stairway to Heaven. Nailed it. Led Zepplin in tears.
But this duo needs to 1st. watch the Live Led Zeppelin version of "Stairway To Heaven" at the M.S.G 1973 show, then watch Heart's cover at the Kennedy Center.. ♠W.G.
I saw Heart in an outdoor concert ( about 1973). We stood about 4 rows from the stage & our mouths dropped open about how INCREDIBLE they were!! They were all so beautiful( especially Anne) & her voice was heavenly! Such talent! I think out tickets were $8 back then!
I saw them open for Loggins and Messina. They blew LM out of the bldg. The concert was DONE when they finished and lots of people walked out because Heart had just handed it to us...their heart.
It is always so entertaining when young people first experience something that has been around for over 40 years. I hope you keep educating yourselves. There are hundreds more where this came from.
Closer to 1000 more. Even the worst song from that period beats anything being done today, at least what is playing on the radio. Bet there are lots of talents out there that do not get airplay...good thing we can always check out anyone on youtube.
Who is she competing against for that title exactly? Always found Heart to be very meh. Nothing special going on with this song... basic chuggy riff and corny high pitch chorus. Sounds like a cheap knock off of Yes who were also shit 😂
Ann has the most incredible voice. She can rock and sing beautiful ballads. Dog And Butterfly is a great example of her softer yet still amazing vocals. And Nancy is a Guitar God! Oh and she can sing beautifully as well.
It was not just them being women on stage as you seemed to like: The entire song is about the sexism they faced in the music industry, and throwing it back in their faces in a very unapologetic way. It's one of the most classic rock songs ever written and performed and it's by two women, both sisters, who said no to the sexism and became symbols of feminism. It's an incredible and powerful song and it's also a liberation song. 👍
Here is what I heard Nancy Wilson say about what the song is about, and yes, the anger is genuine. According to Nancy, the band was at an industry party, held at the hotel where they were staying. An executive, a drunken pervert who has never been named, walked up to them and said, "Hey, Ann, how's your love life?" Confused, she motioned to her boyfriend and said, "Well, Michael's right here, ask him." "No, Ann, baby," he said, "I mean, your sister lover!" Ann responded by slapping him across the face, and then going upstairs to her room. Furious, she began to write the song. I have heard all kinds of variations of this story from different sources, but this came directly from Nancy Wilson in a radio interview. Frankly, I don't know how she didn't beat the shit out of him.
Back in the 70s riding around in your car with friends, we had one great song after another come on the radio. At the time we didn’t realize what a fantastic time we lived in! 60s and 70s music still is the best music ever written, in my opinion! Born in 1956. Roger in Pierre South Dakota

OMG! I was going to suggest Heart. So glad you guys did this. Crazy on You and Magic Man are my favorites. Anne and Nancy Wilson. You are right Amber ..... Pure talent !
@@TheNoncritical1 Agreed. The intro to Crazy On You is quite good. But saying she's one of the greatest guitarists of all time is utterly laughable. Good songwriter.
As a junior in High School when this song came out, my biggest issue back then was which sister was I more in love with, Nancy or Ann? LOL. They were and have been badass every day.
This song is definitely about them being mad at someone. This was their reaction to their record label (Mushroom records) who created a rumor for publicity - that the sisters were lovers (so incest). When Ann found out she went back to her hotel and wrote this song as a reaction and the "barracuda" is the business people in the record industry. They left Mushroom for another label and released this song with them. But there are definitely many references to the label people being "barracudas": You lying so low in the weeds; I bet you gonna ambush me; You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees ; Now wouldn't you, barracuda?"
In their day very few could touch them in song power & amazing shows. I think they hung them up now but they were the female zeitgeists, I saw them twice & I was in awe

The sisters in Heart are bad ass. They are Ann Wilson the lead singing, and her younger sister Nancy on guitar and backing vocals. They both write all of their songs. They are definitely Icons in the world of Rock!!
If no one else has suggested her, try some Joan Jett - I Hate Myself For Loving You or I Love Rock 'n' Roll. Other female artists or female fronted bands I'd suggest would be: Pat Benatar - Hell Is For Children or Promises In The Dark (but there's so many great Pat Benatar songs to choose from!) 10,000 Maniacs with Natalie Merchant - Jezebel or Like The Weather (lots of songs down that rabbit hole, too) Evanescense - Call Me When You're Sober Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl Liz Phair - Supernova Alanis Morrisette - You Oughtta Know or All I Really Want Annie Lennox - Why or Walking On Broken Glass or try her with the Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams or Missionary Man Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen or Rhiannon The Pretenders (for some Chrissie Hinds) - Brass In Pocket Garbage (for Shirley Manson) - Stupid Girl So many awesome songs from the artists I listed, and so many more that I haven't! You could revisit these artists many times over, as well as Janis Joplin, who you'll hopefully listen to more of!
The Runaways (Joan Jett and Lita Ford): Cherry Bomb, School Days. Joan Jett: Any song. Lita Ford: Kiss Me Deadly, "Close My Eyes Forever, Lisa, Shot of Poison. Jefferson Airplane: White Rabbit & Volunteers. Stevie Nicks: Sometimes It's a Bitch. Blondie(Debbie Harry): Any song: Rapture, Heart of Glass, Maria, Call Me, Atomic, etc. Pat Benatar: Any Song: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Love is a Battlefield, Heartbreaker, Hell is for Children, Invincible, Sex as a Weapon, etc. Scandal (Patty Smyth): The Warrior, Good Bye to You. Eurythmics (Annie Lennox): Sweat Dreams, Here Comes the Rain Again, Solo: Why, Walking on Broken Glass. Kim Carnes: Betty Davis Eyes. Bonnie Tyler.: Total Eclipse of the Heart which should lead you to Jim Steinman and then Meatloaf with Bat out of Hell. Just a start.
If your wanting a more modern female singer: Florence and the Machine! Dog Days is her IT song, Queen of Peace is haunting. Hunger and Big God are also treats!
So glad you did this and that you loved it. I wanted to be Ann Wilson so bad. She was tough, sassy, sexy and a powerhouse vocalist. And it makes me happy seeing women kicking ass with the men, sometimes just as good if not better. I am going to love Female Friday!!!!!
Sad story behind the song is that when they were being marketed, some idiot thought it would be a great idea to write a story about them implying that there was incest between the sisters. So they started referring to journalists as barracudas. That's what the song is about
giggles...If I may add abit of detail? This song was apparently written in response to advertising bill-boarded by Mushroom Records insinuating Ann und Nancy were lovers of incest,...as well a promoter after their show in Detroit ask Ann how her lover was doing, referring to Nancy. So Ann wrote this song that night in her hotel room speaking of das greedy, rumoring, fortune & fame of media und das record (music) industry, comparing them to a predator fish (Barracuda). Ann & Nancy were supposedly novice Scuba, had experienced deep-sea fishing, loved das ocean, ships, pirates, etc...und a special love of visiting light-houses. A rather funny thing ist that quite many people supposedly protested by signing petitions to boycott Mushroom Records promising not to purchase records with their label until (MR) took das advertising down...It was gone in 3 days, und HEART never played that promoter's venue in Detroit again. :-) I haven't bothered to fact-check das complete story und I wasn't born yet, but it makes me smile, so I'm fine with it. :-) It isn't life-altering to ponder. Absolutely incredible ladies. I was a very young teen when this came out. Loved it of course. But it was one day when i was cleaning the kitchen and "Dog an Butterfy" came on the radio and brought me to tears. Fell head over heals. The cover of there album "Little Queen" also contributed to that, as any teen boy could attest. Fast forward 35 years to my favorite Heart performance of "Stairway to Heaven" at the Kennedy Center Honoring Led Zepplin. THAT IS A MUST SEE! Please add that to your list.
hey jay , hey amber , i heard this song when i was very young and loved it ever since . such a great band , their tribute to led zeppelin is fantastic ANN(vocals) and NANCY(guitar) WILSON
I wasn't the biggest fan of Heart back in that time; but as a musician myself, I loved the grit and talent of all these players. Years later; I appreciate them even more; since we lost so much musicianship to tech, sampling, etc. That's why you youngsters love it.. it's real music, real passion, and real performance.
I live in Canada and I can remember going to a bar one Friday night to hear a band called Heart. It was quite possibly one of the best performances that I ever saw. We left that night knowing that these people were going places. About a year later the album Dreamboat Annie came out. They had made the grade.
Ann and Nancy Wilson, sisters. Ann did the singing and Nancy danced her fingers up and down the guitar neck...I so love their music! Thanx for the memories here! PEACE!!!!!
Dreamboat Annie - killer vocal. She was and remains a goddess. Saw the sisters just a couple of years ago (not long before Covid set in) and they were as phenomenal as ever. Nancy is no slouch on that guitar.

They were big Led Zeppelin fans and they did a tribute song to Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven) when Zeppelin was honored at the Kennedy Center honors with the Obama’s in attendance. Their rendition of the Zeppelin classic is just unbelievable. You should definitely react to it.
The Wilson Sisters, Ann and Nancy, are legends! My favorite Heart song is still their first big hit from 1976 called "Magic Man." I recommend a studio recording as opposed to a live version. They also are known for "Crazy for You."
AHHH...My man brought it hell yeah!!!....Crazy on you is a must too and Magic man by Heart! Im diggin the female friday yall! Brilliant and unique idea guys.
Hey Heart also did a great version of the great Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. These sisters have been rocking us out for a long time. Glad I’m subscribed to your channel man.
As I've gotten older I realize how lucky I was to grow up during the time before auto-tune when artists had real, natural talent and how accessible bands in concert were. We could see two to three bands for $9-13. "Heart" is another band that sounds exactly like their albums in concert. (I keep posting the same comment on different videos but it's true, no lip-syncing back in my day).
The Wilson sisters revealed in various interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards an ad Mushroom Records placed in trade publications implying that Ann and Nancy were lesbians having an affair. The song focuses on Ann's rage towards a promoter who came up to her after a concert in Detroit asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her then-boyfriend - band member Michael Fisher. After the promoter revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy Wilson, Ann became angry and went back to her hotel room to write the song. Nancy put suitably angry music to the words to complete the song comparing the sleazy side of music to a dangerous fish.
Legends...not only Ann and Nancy, but a great band behind them. Going 40 plus years now. Check out their rendition of “ Stairway to Heaven” at the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors...they had Led Zeppelin crying. This song is 45 years old now.
I saw this band in Milwaukee in the early 1970's while on their first tour as the lead act for Jefferson Starship. The Wilson sisters, Ann & Nancy, led the band that blew the crowd away with powerful vocals, drive, energy, and an overall great sound.
Love love love Heart. Been listening to them since the 70's. My favorite album is The Road Home. It is a live club performance in the unplugged style but with strings in their home city Seattle. It contains acoustic versions of many of the band's hits including Alone, Barracuda and Dreamboat Annie. Next reaction must be The Kenndey Center Honors where they cover Stairway To Heaven honoring the band. It's awesome! Great reaction ❤

Yeah like someone commented, these types of bands are raw talent, nothing superficial or shallow about Heart, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nick's from Fleetwood Mac and many others. Thank you so much.
Ann got upset and wrote this song about some creeps who kept asking about her and her sister, Nancy (the guitarist), and not in a nice way, spreading horrible rumors about their relationship. Great, iconic song! Heart has a bunch of big hits, with some, like this song, rockers from the '70s, and others from the '80s. Please, react to "Magic Man" or "Crazy On You," next. They are from the '70s and rock out. Love your channel!
Ann and Nancy both had problems with how the record label wanted them to wear skimpy sexy clothes and they refused because that’s not the kind of women they are.

@@ivankaleoniefuchs333 its true they did cave to the pressures in the 80s to be more sexy even though the sisters did not really want to go along with it. But by that time the legal issues they had with former labels and contracts and band members had left the sisters needing to make serious money so they went along with the skimpier outfits and even some of the songs they recorded but were not crazy about. Money talks.
Really? Because even before they were signed by any label - Ann (and later when Nancy joined) would both wear very short skirts on stage for their high school dance bookings and other bookings as well. Them pretending now that their sex appeal was not part of their draw back then - and they knew it - is ridiculous.

Different styles but Lisa Fischer can hang. 🤷♂️
Grace slick too
Amber, you ask about what triggered the anger in this song.
This comment should be pinned since it answers the question she asked
@@johnhorner5711 I don’t doubt that for a second. The whole industry is rife with snakes and back stabbing scumbags.
I toured with them for a bit when I drove for Ozark Mountain Leasing hauling their gear from venue to venue for a few months so enjoyed seeing and hearing them many times live and I can say they treated everyone very kindly, even us truck drivers.
Sweet! What a great memory
My uncle Leon often managed to get into his fair share of backstage areas with a homemade printed lanyard badge and a fancy looking camera... he just had a pass that said "PRESS" on it, and this was one of the bands he has photos of from back stage. Sneaky bastard. xD
"Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" are also a MUST from Heart!! :)
if you check out crazy on you, it has to be live!
@@Urzu71 yeah Nancy jamming on acoustic in the beginning is fire :D
Saw Heart at one of the super bowl of rock concerts at solder field. Emerson, lake and palmer was the head liner and Heart blew them away!
Do heart at the kennedy center. Led Zepplin in attendance for a ceremony for them and Heart sang their song of songs Stairway to Heaven. Nailed it. Led Zepplin in tears.
It was outstanding. I'm from there home town they still rock even into there early 60's
YES!! That performance is killer! Blown away!
But this duo needs to 1st. watch the Live Led Zeppelin version of "Stairway To Heaven" at the M.S.G 1973 show,
then watch Heart's cover at the Kennedy Center.. ♠W.G.
Love that performance
Ann Wilson has arguably the best Female voice in Rock music. The song is about a sleazy record executive.
No doubt!
I saw Heart in an outdoor concert ( about 1973). We stood about 4 rows from the stage & our mouths dropped open about how INCREDIBLE they were!! They were all so beautiful( especially Anne) & her voice was heavenly! Such talent! I think out tickets were $8 back then!
same here..about $7.50 in 76
I saw them open for Loggins and Messina. They blew LM out of the bldg. The concert was DONE when they finished and lots of people walked out because Heart had just handed it to us...their heart.
I love the Wilson sisters. My fav from them is "Crazy on you," about a friend that came back from Vietnam who changed.
Their song “Crazy on You” would be a GREAT one to react to.
If you did this one on Female Fridays, you can get a 2fer. Ann belting out the lyrics and Nancy going insane on the guitar in the opening!

Ann Wilson has one of the strongest ...voices in rock!
Take out the word "female" and your statement is still true. One of the all-time greats.
Not many could give the powerful voice of Grace Slick competition. Ann is one who absolutely could.

When all male bands were the norm, Heart was one of the first female led bands.
You have to listen to all their songs!!!!!!!
Ann Wilson was one of the greatest female rock vocalists of all time.
Was or is?
Is!!
Who is she competing against for that title exactly? Always found Heart to be very meh. Nothing special going on with this song... basic chuggy riff and corny high pitch chorus. Sounds like a cheap knock off of Yes who were also shit 😂
More like is the greatest
My mom actually met her and got a picture with her
Ann has the most incredible voice. She can rock and sing beautiful ballads. Dog And Butterfly is a great example of her softer yet still amazing vocals. And Nancy is a Guitar God! Oh and she can sing beautifully as well.
She does that with Dreamboat Annie too.
The Wilson sisters (HEART), Stevie Nicks, and Pat Benatar are my 3 (4 technically) fav female rockers!!! 34 y/o dude here stating this proudly.
The lead singer is Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy Wilson plays Guitar and sings.
The song is actually about another woman. Someone in the industry.
There was nothing sexist about it, lmao. And the person is question is also another woman, interestingly.
Here is what I heard Nancy Wilson say about what the song is about, and yes, the anger is genuine.
According to Nancy, the band was at an industry party, held at the hotel where they were staying.
An executive, a drunken pervert who has never been named, walked up to them and said, "Hey, Ann, how's your love life?"
Confused, she motioned to her boyfriend and said, "Well, Michael's right here, ask him."
"No, Ann, baby," he said, "I mean, your sister lover!"
Ann responded by slapping him across the face, and then going upstairs to her room. Furious, she began to write the song.
I have heard all kinds of variations of this story from different sources, but this came directly from Nancy Wilson in a radio interview.
Frankly, I don't know how she didn't beat the shit out of him.
@@jtoland2333 I’ve heard it too and agree with you. 💯

As a junior in High School when this song came out, my biggest issue back then was which sister was I more in love with, Nancy or Ann? LOL. They were and have been badass every day.
Nope been Nancy since day one.
I was in love with Ann for years!
But there are definitely many references to the label people being "barracudas": You lying so low in the weeds; I bet you gonna ambush me;
You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees
; Now wouldn't you, barracuda?"
I never knew that
Good on them
In their day very few could touch them in song power & amazing shows. I think they hung them up now but they were the female zeitgeists, I saw them twice & I was in awe
They were talking about a manager

The sisters in Heart are bad ass. They are Ann Wilson the lead singing, and her younger sister Nancy on guitar and backing vocals. They both write all of their songs. They are definitely Icons in the world of Rock!!
If no one else has suggested her, try some Joan Jett - I Hate Myself For Loving You or I Love Rock 'n' Roll. Other female artists or female fronted bands I'd suggest would be:
Pat Benatar - Hell Is For Children or Promises In The Dark (but there's so many great Pat Benatar songs to choose from!)
10,000 Maniacs with Natalie Merchant - Jezebel or Like The Weather (lots of songs down that rabbit hole, too)
Evanescense - Call Me When You're Sober
Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl
Liz Phair - Supernova
Alanis Morrisette - You Oughtta Know or All I Really Want
Annie Lennox - Why or Walking On Broken Glass or try her with the Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams or Missionary Man
Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen or Rhiannon
The Pretenders (for some Chrissie Hinds) - Brass In Pocket
Garbage (for Shirley Manson) - Stupid Girl
So many awesome songs from the artists I listed, and so many more that I haven't!
If you're throwing out Joan Jett songs go for Crimson in Clover.
Ugh, the Wilson sisters! Both so gorgeous and overloaded with pure talent. ❤️❤️
Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls, this, is rock n roll....and Ann is the Queen.
Sad story behind the song is that when they were being marketed, some idiot thought it would be a great idea to write a story about them implying that there was incest between the sisters. So they started referring to journalists as barracudas. That's what the song is about
Whoa. Had no idea.
I read that even their record company was part of this would-be scandal. They dropped the record company.
giggles...If I may add abit of detail? This song was apparently written in response
to advertising bill-boarded by Mushroom Records insinuating Ann und Nancy were
lovers of incest,...as well a promoter after their show in Detroit ask Ann how her
lover was doing, referring to Nancy.
So Ann wrote this song that night in her hotel room speaking of das greedy,
rumoring, fortune & fame of media und das record (music) industry, comparing
them to a predator fish (Barracuda).
Ann & Nancy were supposedly novice Scuba, had experienced deep-sea fishing,
loved das ocean, ships, pirates, etc...und a special love of visiting light-houses.
A rather funny thing ist that quite many people supposedly protested by signing
petitions to boycott Mushroom Records promising not to purchase records with
their label until (MR) took das advertising down...It was gone in 3 days, und
HEART never played that promoter's venue in Detroit again. :-)
I haven't bothered to fact-check das complete story und I wasn't born yet, but it

Great comment!
The best part is fans were talented as well. Just a great time to be young and alive.

This song was a reaction to a reporter that suggested they were lesbians in a sexual relationship. They're sisters.
Yea that time period was the worst but they did prove that you didn't skimpy outfits to be sexy
Really? Because even before they were signed by any label - Ann (and later when Nancy joined) would both wear very short skirts on stage for their high school dance bookings and other bookings as well.
