    I'm 68 years old and when people ask me what the best part of my life was I say it was being to grow up with 60's and 70's music. It was a magic time.

      I’ll be 68 in less than 2 months, & I totally agree with you. It was a magical time for me. I like that the younger folks are learning about & appreciating those that came before. A special shout out to the musicians in the 50s that started a whole new genre.

    This song is about a record exec started a rumor that the sisters had a lesbian relationship(to increase record sales). When Ann found out she wrote this song that night.

    • @louisejohnson6767
      @louisejohnson6767 3 года назад +9

      Yes, you'd think that claiming your clients were involved in an incestuous relationship would be negative publicity. I hope they fired his ass!

    • @norwegianblue2017
      @norwegianblue2017 3 года назад +1

      Really? I mean it is definitely a very sexual song, but doesn't sound like it is talking about a lesbian relationship. Sounds like she is talking about some kind of John Holmes type dude.

    • @fortch17
      @fortch17 3 года назад +30

      @Norwegisn Blue
      The song itself isn't about an incestuous lesbian relationship, its Ann Wilson's response to the record exec sinking so low as to spread that rumour. He's the Barracuda in the song who does and says anything it takes to gain notoriety for the band, regardless of the personal effect on the band itself.

    • @visiblepixels4632
      @visiblepixels4632 3 года назад +8

      @@fortch17 Exactly. "If the real thing don't do the trick, you better make up something quick" = Fabricate an incestuous affair to market the band. It was despicable, and they moved to a different label as a result.

  • @nemesisjuggernaut7920
    @nemesisjuggernaut7920 3 года назад +200

    Gotta do “Magic Man” if you haven’t yet. So much VIBE in that song! Ann Wilson is known to be one of the top rock singers ever. “Barracuda” doesn’t capture her versatility and style as well as other songs do. “Dog and Butterfly” is a good ballad too.

    • @nemesisjuggernaut7920
      @nemesisjuggernaut7920 3 года назад +8

      @@cryptoholica72 Me too!
      Also interesting factoid: cover bands would never play Magic Man because they couldn’t figure it out. The two guitarists were on different tunings. It’s basically impossible to play certain parts on standard tuning, but other parts must be played in standard.

Jason Bonham played his daddy’s set of drums that night . This was very emotional for everyone that grew up with Led Zeppelin. John Bonham was the best drummer in my world . You're 100% correct... As a young kid hearing this for the first time, my head nearly exploded... Then I ran (headless) to my Epiphone guitar, turned up the gain on my tiny National tube amp, and proceeded to learn my first power-"chug".
      I'm sure there are earlier examples, but the sound was definitely not "normal" classic rock at the time, and it directly transcended into today's metal.

    Thanks Asia & BJ. We used to jam this in a Club Band called "Stillwater" Lead Vocals Sharon & Loren, Walter Guitar, Vocals & Bass, Joe Guitar & Bass, Tyson Drums and I Was on Guitar, Vocals & Bass. Sharon recently passed away, so it's been difficult for me to listen to some of the tunes She sang perfectly in our group, But, I think she'd want us to remember the Fun times, Energy & Power house Group we were. Sharon also liked "Never, What about Love, Alone, All I wanna do is make love to You & Even it Up." Wow, 3 guys Switching off on Bass & Guitar, that was fun. Egos weren't Sabotaging the Unity of the Group. Sharon had an incredible Voice. I did a Hip hop tune with her Son Half Smoked and Joes Son Dscript. Sharon and Joe were Impressed with our use of Old School Instruments & Analog Recording. We miss Her. Man, "Stillwater" was a Hot Group!

    If you'd like to experience some of their 80's stuff (big hair and all) 'These Dreams' is one of the songs when Nancy actually is the lead singer (instead of playing guitar), although it is more a ballad, and 'Alone'. As others have suggested, check out their performance at the Lincoln Center, it's more recent, and one of the most amazing things you will ever see, but first watch the original Led Zepplin 'Stairway to Heaven" so you have something to reference. They have so many hits, it's easy to go down the Heart rabbit hole.

    Saw them in 79 at the Texxas Jam. It's was 110 on the field at the Cotton Bowl. They came on later as the sun went down. The wind started blowing and their outfits were blowing in the wind. They had to cut early because of rain and electrocution, but what we did see was just fire. At 63 I can still see those silk outfits blowing in the wind.

    Totally agree with David Phillips below. My two favorite songs are "Alone", where you hear why Ann Wilson is considered one of the greatest female rock voices. and "These Dreams" where Nancy Wilson does a truly great job as the lead vocal.
    And if you want to hear them do the best cover performance ever, listen/watch their cover of "Stairway to Heaven", (Live at Kennedy Center Honors), performed in front of Led Zeppelin, the group that made it one of the best and most famous rock songs of all time, and President and First Lady Obama, among others.

    Barracuda was in reference of the label and anyone trying to take, steal, all their writing credits and control them. The main lawyer/label rep was the “Barracuda” … The singer, and blond guitarist are sisters, and they both were dating the 2 guys in the group… “Magic Man” was about the singers relationship at the time. Wilson sisters fought amongst all male leading bands to write these awesome songs… Peace!

      It wasn't about writing credits. It was about the PR done by their label, some of which implied the sisters were in an incestuous lesbian relationship.

      Growing up listening to this band I never heard either of those but who knows? To me I always thought this was about a type of man. Back in the 1970's a barracuda was another word for a wolf, a dog, or a playa. This is from the perspective of a woman who once fell prey to his game.

      I seen them talk about it on Howard Stern... basically to make it back in those you were expected to sleep with someone if you were female. They refused. a Barracuda was in reference to all those who could sign you to a record deal but wanted a happy ending first! They kicked as and did on thier own!!

      @@edwardlongshanks827 Writing credits as in publishing rights… Yes, the label put out the idea the sisters were lesbians, which caused issues during that time.. The same thing is being said, and the song was a hit back on those label members that were trying to control as usual what they could. Bottom line label take over, and being female took more to get to where they ended up. Great band, many great songs,… Amazing vocals, guitar, and songs…
