Let's not get into that argument. Yes, the 2 CAN rock and DO but ... let's get something straight ... I agree, Ann Wilson CAN definitely sing, but all Nancy ever did, as far as with instruments, was rhythm guitar, WITH the EXCEPTION of the opening to this 1 (one, won, Juan) song, and Roger Fisher stole that from another song, modified it into the opening you hear and then taught it to Nancy. Also, the fast acoustic shuffle part between the opening fingerpicking section and the heavy electric guitar bass line that follows was based on a Moody Blue song, called Question.
From Nancy's own lips, "We were listening to a lot of Moody Blues back then. There was a song called Question that had this fast, fiery guitar rhythm. That was our idea for the groove. Then Roger Fisher came up with the really cool riff over A-minor to F, and that gave it some more beautiful momentum."
I've read a few other interviews of hers where she goes deeper into the song's background, where she definitely states that Roger Fisher wrote it, and then others where she kind of sidesteps the question and hints that she wrote it. I think the truth is, he taught her that beginning and she began playing it in her own style, but she never plays any other lead, at least not on any of their songs that I'm familiar with.
What I am saying is, Nancy Wilson is hardly EVER heard playing, other than this one song, or their acoustic ballads. You NEVER hear Nancy playing on ANY of their "rocker" hits, but she sure makes it look like she is "the shit" in the videos ... with the high leg kicks and low crouches. Don't get me wrong, but Nancy was an incredible singer, who suffered from "2nd place envy" and sibling rivalry issues, and that is why she insisted that all videos made her look like she was doing all the heavy lifting in their killer songs. She wasn't doing ANY of it. I've played guitar for longer than they were a band, and I know this for a fact. She made it look good, but that's the extent of her contributions, as far as playing is concerned.
In fact, they always had 2 great guitarists behind them that did the magic, and she even made them cut their hair and dress similar to her so, when they did their videos, they could do tricks with the cameras (flash their faces quickly one after the other) and play with the lighting to convince you that she was doing all the work. Those 2 fantastic guitarists NEVER got any of the credit for all their awesome hard work. That is a crime, if you ask me, and has always pissed me off. If they had just concentrated on the things she DID do, and had her do more singing (she had an incredible voice), she wouldn't have needed to go to such measures to stroke her ego.

I played drums in a Heart cover band and we only played two shows TWO SHOWS! after rehearsing for months. Why? Because the lead singer, while very good, said it wasn't worth it to her to work that hard for the pittances we were being paid to play. That should tell you something about Ann Wilson.

An IS ALL that. However, although she does a fair showing of herself in the group, Nancy was an average guitarist, at best. She was a much better singer, but they chose not to use her as much for that, and instead used her much more as "eye candy". I'm sure that was at the insistence of Nancy.
As I have said elsewhere, Nancy was play acting for the camera most of the time. She was NOT playing the parts that most songs would have you believe she was. This is the ONLY song where she was actually doing a decent bit of work, and only on the intro. Roger Fisher "borrowed" that intro, reworked it and taught it to Nancy.
I've played guitar off and on for 60+ years, have play in bands, roadied for many bands, done sound for bands, studied 1,000s of musicians and thought, to the laymen, it "APPEARS" that she is a great guitarist, she is great, productive band member, she is an average guitarist, at least as far as the biggest of their hits are concerned. Sure, she may have done more on the acoustic side of things, but all the stuff they show in their videos are either straight out showing her doing kicks and squats or "bait and switch" camera moves.
It's so obvious if you look carefully, which is why they dress the guitarists like her, use weird lighting and have their hair done in the same way as hers. Sometimes, they would show a quick flash of her, and then do a close up of 1 of the lead guitarists doing intricate hand or finger pieces, but only for a second or two, and do it all in bad lighting or shadowy scenes. That is to make it look as if she were doing it herself.

A great song by Heart. Thanks chat for getting this one played.
Heart lead singer Ann Wilson wrote the "Crazy On You" lyric about finding solace from the stressful state of the world in the arms of her boyfriend, Heart guitarist Mike Fisher (he eventually stopped performing and became their sound man). Ann was in her mid-20s and didn't see a bright future for her generation (sound familiar?). At the time, the Vietnam War was still going on, crime was rising, and there were gas shortages. She sings out her fears in the first verse:
"If we still have time, we might still get by
Every time I think about it, I want to cry
With bombs and the devil, and the kids keep comin'
No way to breathe easy, no time to be young"
But she was in love, so she made the song about Mike as a way of saying "thank God I have you." The song turns sensual, with Wilson coming to the conclusion that all she can do in these seemingly apocalyptic times is go crazy on the man of her dreams. (in a good way)

I thought that Micheal Fisher was Heart’s manager and the brother of lead guitarist Roger Fisher. Michael was with Ann (and is the “Magic Man” ) and Nancy was with Roger. Maybe Michael was in the band in some capacity at the time of the song’s writing. At any rate… There has never been or never will be a band like Heart… they were my favorite band up through Roger’s departure … I was even on board for Even It Up and Greatest Hits/Live. They lost me in the hair band 80’s… still Heart remain one of my favorite bands of all time!

And Asia, if I may say is correct in saying that her singing voice is not being taxed in that portion of the song. Her abilities are not typical but not being strained either. Nancy was told at one point that acoustic guitar wouldn't become a "thing" compared to an electric one. She was like watch me. That was just another thing that set them apart from other bands. Nancy kills it on acoustic guitar and it's not like a hint of the sound. You can hear it right in the forefront. For Ann back in the day, it wasn't hard for her to hit those notes. Today, she admits some days it's there and some days it's not and she knows when she can and can't and doesn't force it.

What impresses me about her is how masterful she is at both being very soft & low key at one moment, then totally belting out the hard rock vocals the next moment. Also, the acoustic guitar playing is always Nancy Wilson. Also #2: I believe Ann also contributed flute-playing in some of their music.

I have, and this is really just MY opinion, so it doesn't mean anything but, I really didn't like the Kennedy Center performance at all. If I were them, I would do what groups like Pink Floyd or the Eagles did ... get someone younger in to do those parts they can't do anymore.

    • @StevesFunhouse
      @StevesFunhouse 2 года назад

Actually no, she CAN'T still sing like this. I've heard her, and like most artists, when they get older, they lose the upper part of their voice. I've watched the Kennedy performance, as well as other recent performances, and she definitely checks out in spots where she used to go or just sings in a different area of her abilities. It's not mean to say this ... it is a fact of life. What is mean, is that, it doesn't happen to EVERY musician ... some can still do it when they are older, some can't.

Nancy tearing a guitar up and Ann just wailing almost knocking us down with her voice. I saw them twice at the Oakland coliseum where the Oakland raiders play during the daytime. You're thinking you know better because you don't understand what's involved and you've heard others speaking or writing about it, including guitar magazine people. The problem is, most people don't actually play, so they fall for the act. I'm here to tell you, it is YOU who are wrong. A trained eye can see things you and most people can't.

@@CuttinEJ Don't believe me !!! Find yourself an ACTUAL expert or great guitarist, show them ANY video of her playing, and you will find that, other than the intro to this song, a part that Roger Fisher stole and reworked from the Moody Blues and TAUGHT to her, they will confirm, she is NOT playing all those intricate lead guitar parts.
And let's be clear, when put up against a lead guitar or rhythm guitar (played by the 2 guys always standing behind her) running through amplifiers, there is no way you're gonna hear much of anything she does playing rhythm on an acoustic.
Elsewhere in the responses to this video, I laid out the fact that Nancy explained how the intro was created, that Roger Fisher wrote it, taking most of it from a Moody Blues song the liked called, Question. Then, she went on to say (paraphrasing), "most of the stuff you wrote is really ripped off from other artists you've heard ... you just rework it until you make it your own".
From an old saying (paraphrasing again), "given a typewriter and enough time, even a monkey can spell the work 'f*ck' !!!". The actual saying is much longer and "cleaner" but, you get the point. Nancy was taught the intro, and she did a great job of it, when she wasn't trying to go off on a tangent and expand on it.

@@StevesFunhouse you make a lot of assumptions and, as usual, your assumptions are incorrect. First in thinking that you are in any way qualified to criticize someone who has actually produced original music that the world still loves and second in assuming that I don’t know anything about music or playing the guitar. My first guitar was a 1965 Fender Strat that my Dad (a professional musician (guitar)) bought for me for Christmas from a pawnshop in Joplin, Mo in 1969 for $100. I’m 63 years old now and I still regret letting that one get away from me. Even though arthritis and Crohn’s have rendered me unable to play any more, I still can’t bear to part with my 2017 Les Paul Studio HD. You should probably spend more time listening and less time speaking on subjects of which you obviously know so little. (And yes, that’s how you say that.)

Asia is correct, Ann Wilson is that kinda singer. She can belt it out full throttle and bring it back down to a quiet whisper with the greatest of ease. As a female singer she is using her "chest voice" and what's called her "head voice", not falsetto. Falsetto is a vocal technique used by male singers only to get into their highest range (tenor).
