4:45 the virus shirt is in reference to Resident Evil as far as I can tell. It's the word Virus on top of the letter T, and the T-virus is the virus in Resident Evil that turned everyone to zombies/mutants.
In the Good the Bad and the Ugly Clint Eastwood digs up a saddlebag of gold which is the 'sunshine in a bag'. Damon Albarn is playing a melodica in the background throughout the song in a way he said was inspired by the score of A Fisful of Dollars. The end of Good Bad Ugly takes place in a graveyard hence the undead gorillas coming up out of the earth to have a standoff with Murdoc. 2-D (Damon) singing lead is like Clint Eastwood's character: self-assured, confident, empowered, embracing his own identity. Del's ghost is kind of like the gold buried in the graveyard but this gold is his wisdom telling us to contemplate the nature of life, purpose and time.
Wow thanks for spelling all that out. It really is a reference to The Ecstasy of Gold. I always assumed it was a drug reference, but it being gold makes a lot more sense now that I have a better idea about the overall theme of the song (and the possibly intentional confusion of gold with a drug).
At absolutely no point in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly does Eastwood, or anyone, refer to a saddlebag of gold as "sunshine in a bag." This myth gets passed round and round, and yet, it's dispelled as easily as watching the movie.

Gorillaz is complete fire.🔥. This track especially is brilliant and just so Iconic! Damon Albarn revealed Clint Eastwood got its name because the programmed beat that supports Del the Funky Homosapien’s rapping throughout bears similarity to the theme music to ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’. He said “We were recording in Jamaica and listening to a lot of dancehall music, and we imagined a cool moniker to have would be Clint Eastwood,” Albarn also said that he’s a “great fan of the actor and of [The Good, the Bad and the Ugly director] Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone”. That is why Albarn named his other band ‘The Good, The Bad and The Queen’
In the bands biography Del is actually Russels (the drummers) best friend who got killed in a drive by and his ghost now lives in Russels head providing him amazing beat mastery
Couple a few things. First the Cross of Peter, while also used as a symbol associated with Satanism has also been used as a symbol of anti-(Catholic) church symbol. This has been used during the reformation as a representation of the disassociation of the papacy. Second what you describe as the 'communist fist' is actually the symbol of solidarity. Yes it is used by Marxists, Leninist and Maoists but it has its history from the American Revolutionist Patrick Henry as he was described, and later painted (as it was 1775) as using it. Particularly when he was giving the speech that included the now much misunderstood: Give me liberty or give me death. And as others have pointed out the T-Virus was the virus that caused the zombies in Resident Evil. The video game was released about 5 years prior to this songs video.

My favorite line to this song has always been the Rhythm, you got or you don't that's a fallacy... cause when we say someone doesn't have rhythm we just mean they don't have (or can't dance to) our rhythm. Everyone has a vibe within them, it just might not be yours or what society says is acceptable.

Cause sometimes you break it down and help me understand things that I didn't realize I didn't understand or I didn't See it before.I like the other things that you Mentioned. That I missed.
That sound, in the beginning, sounds like Native Americans chanting, but the way you imitated the orchestra is a famous sound for referring to Westerns. I'm so happy my tin foil hat still fits! hahaha. I remember Delthefunkyhomosapian. I think his track I know of his is "You Must"? 🤷♂I also remember him talkin' to Fab 5 Freddy on "Yo! MTV Raps". Great reaction! 40!
This song, for me, is describing the great awakening. The drummer's soul is speaking to us. When we finally "go in" and connect with our soul, we awaken to our true power and TRUTH. I've listened to this song for years and I finally get it!!
Superfan here! Each character has a lot of lore including Myrdoc, who is the bassist and creator of the band. He wears the upside down cross in several videos because he was known to sell his soul for his bass, which is why his middle name is Faust. Hope this helps!
It's interesting that you often frame your understanding of a song from the point of view of a theism/religion. Yet the song uses the idea of rebirth for the sake of killing of others as pointed out in the opening text from the 1978 film Dawn of the Dead: "Every dead body that is not exterminated, gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill". The T on the shirt with the word virus was a reference to the movie Resident Evil. It would be worth your time doing some reactions to Damon Albarn's first band Blur. I would recommend Country House, Song Number 2, Coffee and TV, Girls and Boys and MOST importantly Parklife. Then when you done watching Parklife understand that it is the story of Jimmy after he jumped off his scooter at the end of Quadrophenia in 1978, deciding to "join" the world rather than end his own life. Jimmy reprises his role in the song Parklife complaining about how his life is now Parklife. It's f'n brilliant mate!
I think its good to take whatever message you want from it. A lot of people will say that the song is referencing drugs, but i think you were closer when you pointed out a positive message.
The link with gorillaz and del is the incredible Deltron 3030 album. Damon (the lead guy) sang a few bits on that album and that’s where he met Del and Dan the Automator. Soon after 3030 was released they collaborated and made the first Gorillaz tracks
Damon Albarn was lead singer of Blur one of the main protagonists of the Brit Pop era along side Oasis and was good mates with MF DOOM. That’s just a tiny bit of his accomplishments.
It’s a communist fist! 😂😂😂 BP bro, don’t you remember two black American athletes raising a fist on the podium at the Olympics? The clenched fist is only communist if it’s an actual communists fist. 😂😂
It is Marxist/communist tho and if you research there were alot of communists pushing the civil rights movement in America as a way to divide the country
hahaha, I love that you said, "Touch the third rail" Not sure if many people would get that reference, but it reminded me of when I was a kid in DC and took the Metro with my Dad. He made it a specific thing to teach me. "If you ever fall on the track, NEVER touch the third rail"! lol you just hit a memory I hadn't thought about in decades.
The T-shirt that says "T-Virus" is a reference to (movie/video game) Resident Evil. In which the T-Virus was infecting people and turning them into zombies. Notice at 3:33 of your video it again makes a reference to zombies.
I feel like he is rapping from the perspective of the Devil. "Under each snare" "who you think is really kicking tunes?" "Mystical? Maybe" "time for me is nothing because im counting no age" "i command you to" "corruption in disguise"
Damon Albarn, Lead singer of Blur broke off and created Gorillaz with a graphic artist to create this animated band. Damon is the Music force behind Gorillaz. Blur will be a fun side quest on this journey (song 2, girls & boys, parklife) are all fun songs from Blur.
Damon Albarn has one of the rare distinctions in music of having/forming/leading not one, but two stadium bands, Blur and Gorillaz. That puts him in company with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney who had The Beatles & Wings.
Idk if that's your merch or a different brand for the shirt, but it's funny that it's a Pro America shirt but the way the Red, White and Blue stripes on the front are used it makes the Netherlands flag.

I could tell from the fact you're not afraid to react to guys like Tom Macdonald that you're a smart dude. Things you noticed in the video and the lyrics that I never thought about before and your takes at the end of the video just proves it. Respect to you my dude. I recondmend checking out a singer named Five Times August if you haven't yet. He's very topical and ballsy with his lyrics, not afraid to call out the bs going on in the world. Much like Tom Macdonald only he's more acoustic and folk orientated. He's one of the few people making real for the people protest music these days. You might like him.
Man I've been rapping Del's verses in this since I could talk. This song introduced me to hip-hop, plain and simple. This whole album is such a cool experiment, and every song they have with a rapper through their discography is so cool
Getting to see del perform this live 10 years ago was savage, i have had people tell me "you cant see the gorillaz live cause they arent a real band" 😂😂😂 bullshit homeboy was ripping a dab pen on stage and killed this song. They had 2 or 3 of the other gorillaz artist there too.
Most of - if not all - the tracks on the early Gorillaz albums were meant to sound nonsensical. The creators of the band wanted to comment on the lack of substance in the industry at the time. Each member is literally a caricature of a music genre: 2-D: British Rock Noodle: Japanese/Kpop Russel: Hiphop and rap Murdock: Heavy/Death Metal
Thank you!!!! This is the only actual breakdown that doesn't try to tell me that nonsense chickenscratch on a napkin is actually pulitzer prize level journalism. Its obvious dopeheads like to make themselves sound less like Dopeheads so they invent backstories to songs they like to trip on acid to so that people think they're simpatico with these cool bands. Reading these supposed backstories, all entirely different, use zero logic. At all.
Glad you're finally reacting to Gorillaz ..lots of great music and styles BTW each character has their own history / backstory .. as far as I know This was the first band to use a secret interactive website ..it was fun.

So one of Dels homies was homies with the Gorillaz. They were working on this track, had a different rapper, it wasnt working out for whatever reason. Dude pitched it Del, he liked the concept and he dropped it that night
As I teen, I took this as a message of hope. "Things may be bleak and you might feel like there's nothing you can do. But your time to try and make your life better will come. In the meantime, don't make thing harder on yourself."
Yeah, I never expected someone to call Del underground. I mean, I'm a metalhead from the Netherlands and I know who he is. Mistadobalina peaked at 8 in the Dutch Singles Top100!
The song has two possible meanings, you can choose one, 1-it's just drugs and being high "I've sunshine, in a bag." 2-Being a cowby-ie, Clint Eastwood, "sunshine in a bag" could mean saddlebags, "I'm useless, but not for long, my future's coming on" could mean the whole riding into town and becoming a hero to the 'little people'.
Dude, I can't watch a Gorillaz vid without watching 5 more directly after. I'll catchya later. Great reaction btw, I enjoy your interpretations, whether or not I agree with them. The willingness to put some consideration into what the artist is putting out is the point. Enjoy your day, man.

Cause sometimes you break it down and help me understand things that I didn't realize I didn't understand or I didn't See it before.I like the other things that you Mentioned. That I missed.
Bro! BP, Swollen members and Heiro?! Epic. That’s it. Just epic. 🤚🏻⬇️🎤
Yeah! Caught me off guard too!
NO WAY! You know Del?! He's my favourite rapper of all time! I LOVE his delivery!
He's #1 on my list.
The Virus thing was referring to the T Virus that was the Zombie virus from the Resident Evil films and game not Covid.
IIRC THE T-Virus on the shirt refers to Resident Evil
Was just gonna say that lol
That sound, in the beginning, sounds like Native Americans chanting, but the way you imitated the orchestra is a famous sound for referring to Westerns. I'm so happy my tin foil hat still fits! hahaha. I remember Delthefunkyhomosapian. I think his track I know of his is "You Must"? 🤷♂I also remember him talkin' to Fab 5 Freddy on "Yo! MTV Raps". Great reaction! 40!
Love Del's lyrics in this song. Great combination of psychology and philosophy
As soon as I heard the drums my head went “I got Sunshine, In a bag”; the stuff your brain retains 😂😂😂.
This song, for me, is describing the great awakening. The drummer's soul is speaking to us. When we finally "go in" and connect with our soul, we awaken to our true power and TRUTH. I've listened to this song for years and I finally get it!!
Yes more Gorillaz!! Feel good inc, dare, Hollywood (feat. Snoop dogg) or Oil (feat Stevie nicks) are all must hears
T-Virus is from the game (and later movie) series Resident Evil. And yeah the Bass player is a pretty insane dude, so an upside cross fits.
If you want a song with profound lyrics and a deep message, then "Loser" by Beck is a must!!
Del had a song on Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 also. It was called "If You Must."
I came here to say all this. Deltron 3030 is a phenomenal record.
@@michaelullo2152 totally. Considering deltron 3030 is kinda the origins of the gorillaz I’m surprised more people don’t know about it.
Gorillaz "STYLO" (original video includes a very cool star cameo) 🔥🔥🔥
Damon Albarn was lead singer of Blur one of the main protagonists of the Brit Pop era along side Oasis and was good mates with MF DOOM.
That’s just a tiny bit of his accomplishments.
You gonna love windmills
I'm an American, but I was living in London when this song came out and it was crazy popular... I mean every one loved these guys!!! ❤
I always amazed at how naive he is 😮
The fist is a symbol of rebellion, Trump used it during the shooting. Is he communist too?🤣
@@Jan-xn3kzHe's a conservative American. Just be thankful he's not insane.
hahaha, I love that you said,
"Touch the third rail"
Not sure if many people would get that reference, but it reminded me of when I was a kid in DC and took the Metro with my Dad.
He made it a specific thing to teach me.
"If you ever fall on the track, NEVER touch the third rail"!
lol you just hit a memory I hadn't thought about in decades.
The creator of the group found the beat from a kids piano preset if you can believe it lol
The T-shirt that says "T-Virus" is a reference to (movie/video game) Resident Evil. In which the T-Virus was infecting people and turning them into zombies. Notice at 3:33 of your video it again makes a reference to zombies.
Please react to Blur, same lead singer as Gorillaz.
I feel like he is rapping from the perspective of the Devil. "Under each snare" "who you think is really kicking tunes?" "Mystical? Maybe" "time for me is nothing because im counting no age" "i command you to" "corruption in disguise"
the shirt says T virus like Resident Evil
Looks like the shirt logo is styled to look like the old G.I. Joe logo….look it up.
It annoys the hell out of me that the word virus which has been around for ? centuries is considered taboo now. Do people forget there have been hundreds of viruses LOOONG b4 Covid? 🤦😂 Either way love this song and many others by Gorillaz ❤ now I need to go watch some vids!
It's a part of conservative identity politics now. The rest of the world has moved on.
The T virus is from resident evil my dude…
T Virus is from Resident Evil
I could tell from the fact you're not afraid to react to guys like Tom Macdonald that you're a smart dude. Things you noticed in the video and the lyrics that I never thought about before and your takes at the end of the video just proves it. Respect to you my dude.
I recondmend checking out a singer named Five Times August if you haven't yet. He's very topical and ballsy with his lyrics, not afraid to call out the bs going on in the world. Much like Tom Macdonald only he's more acoustic and folk orientated. He's one of the few people making real for the people protest music these days. You might like him.
The T virus from the movies dude.
This song is legendary. So lucky to have grown up with this. Gorillaz have had many awesome features on their songs, please dive into them more!
songs about weed from its point of view , the bass player is a satanist , the fist is a nod to super sentai ,and the shirt is a nod to resident evil
You should check out their songs "19-2000", "Dare", and "Feel Good Inc.". All really good songs.
4:25 Sometimes conservatives just need to relax with that stuff
All the time.
Sometimes liberals need to stop crying lol
Confirmation bias.
Man I've been rapping Del's verses in this since I could talk. This song introduced me to hip-hop, plain and simple. This whole album is such a cool experiment, and every song they have with a rapper through their discography is so cool
Life was good when this hit. Pre 911, didnt know how good it really was till it was gone. 9th grade memories ❤❤
The first tour they were behind a screen and all you saw were the animations
Thats T virus.......isnt that from a movie series can't remember the name of the movies, had a hot chick as the heroine
Resident Evil
My favourite Gorillaz track, their creativity always makes them a surprising and refreshing listen
Most of - if not all - the tracks on the early Gorillaz albums were meant to sound nonsensical. The creators of the band wanted to comment on the lack of substance in the industry at the time. Each member is literally a caricature of a music genre:
2-D: British Rock
Noodle: Japanese/Kpop
Russel: Hiphop and rap
Murdock: Heavy/Death Metal
The Gorillaz are not a band. They are a conglomerate of humans that put out amazing projects.
More mumbojumbo stoner tweaker garbage lore that means nothing except they collectively killed a lot of brain cells on acid.
Swollen Members! 🇨🇦 Canada represent!
Gorillaz lead singer had another great band called Blur. You should definitely react to their hit "Song 6"
I LOVE your shirt, man. It's so hard to find people on the internet saying nice things about America. It's so popular to trash the USA that I watch a lot of Europeans, because they're the only ones that have nice things to say about us.
I love this song ❤️❤️❤️
I’m glad to see you’ve finally checked out Gorillaz
So one of Dels homies was homies with the Gorillaz. They were working on this track, had a different rapper, it wasnt working out for whatever reason. Dude pitched it Del, he liked the concept and he dropped it that night
T-virus is a reference to Resident Evil, the virus that generates zombies when some get infected
As I teen, I took this as a message of hope. "Things may be bleak and you might feel like there's nothing you can do. But your time to try and make your life better will come. In the meantime, don't make thing harder on yourself."
Bro, back in the "Bob Dobilina" days, Del was bigger than The Gorrilaz with their 3 songs.
Yeah, I never expected someone to call Del underground. I mean, I'm a metalhead from the Netherlands and I know who he is. Mistadobalina peaked at 8 in the Dutch Singles Top100!
The song has two possible meanings, you can choose one, 1-it's just drugs and being high "I've sunshine, in a bag."
2-Being a cowby-ie, Clint Eastwood, "sunshine in a bag" could mean saddlebags, "I'm useless, but not for long, my future's coming on" could mean the whole riding into town and becoming a hero to the 'little people'.
Dude, I can't watch a Gorillaz vid without watching 5 more directly after. I'll catchya later. Great reaction btw, I enjoy your interpretations, whether or not I agree with them. The willingness to put some consideration into what the artist is putting out is the point. Enjoy your day, man.
Love the shirt, dude. Also, great vid. Gorillaz were/are an awesome group.
yooo the last thing i ever expected was a swollen members mention in the first couple mins 🇨🇦 🖤
Upside cross is a respect gesture to Peter who when crucified said he was unworthy to die as his Lord, so he requested to be crucified upside down.
Yeah. Gorillaz are a little wild. 😮😂
Gorillaz have an absolutely crazy lore behind them
The upside down cross is not really bad, is the St.Peter cross. It’s actually a Christian symbol.
