I’ve had over 20 of the locals “you got to try” cheese steaks and I gotta say, hands down John’s is tops!! We live in Ohio BUT if we are within 50 miles, it’s a guarantee,no time…. we make, it’s not a question.
Not a barstool guy but as a philly transplant John's is the best cheesesteak I've had, and the roast pork is up there (if that's your cup of tea; my friend thinks it's the best sandwich). This amount of care and love makes me even more committed to my opinion. Cheers to Portnoy on his patience and fair shake.

I had the chance to meet John when I went to philly, and he’s a great guy. Could tell I was a tourist, and he helped me out big time when I visited his restaurant. Didn’t have have another steak that was even comparable to his.

I was just there. I don't think I will ever go to Philly and not stop there ever again. Got the Pork and the Cheese Steak. Loved both of them. Very easy place to get to also and plenty of parking nearby with a shopping center across the street.
Went there today and there was a table of guys crushing yuenglings with their sandwiches. A true working mans spot lol. Great to see it getting the recognition it deserves, dalessandros and all those spots are so overrated compared to Johns

John is spot on. In my family it’s always been American, grilled/fried onion and that’s it. If you want, add ketchup for a little tang and acid to cut thru the fat. Meat should be shaved ribeye seasoned with salt and pepper. And he’s spot on about American, there’s something special about good white American cheese in terms of flavor and melt that makes a cheesesteak a cheesesteak in my opinion. Def recommend you check out Leo’s as well. Another family run, award winning place with great steaks. I don’t think they even offer the cheese whiz shite!
I’ve never ordered wiz on my cheesesteak. As a little girl I always loved getting a pizza steak. Sooo good. That’s with marina, provolone or mozzarella, peppers and onions.
