Miss my Philly food scene. I’ve always said Philly is an underrated food haven. There’s so many great places to get great food. Best hoagie rolls in the world…it’s all about the bread 🥖, can’t find anything close to east coast breads anywhere else ❤

6 months ago some friends and I did a philly cheesesteak tour, and we hit up 8 places in one day, reviewing and rating each. The only two that we went to that were also shown here were Pat's and Geno's. Most of the cheesesteaks we tried were actually fairly similar. However, Pat's and Geno's were by far at the bottom of our lists, big let downs.
03:09 "Sometimes Provolone"? Sorry...the answer is always provolone. Tourists get whiz...and who gets American cheese on their steak? 🙂 Honestly that's just how I feel...you do you. Please go around all the places of America with their famous local delicacies and keep making more videos like these. This is the side of American that foreigners rarely get a chance to see.
Good video, Pat’s and Genos clear tourist traps that are just so far behind other places imo. One of my favorites is Steve’s Prince of Steaks personally.
I love Steve's. I go with sweet peppers and onions, no cheese. Something in the peppers/onions is so incredibly savory to me. I could eat two of them and not regret it.

One note about Pat's, is the sandwich back in the 1930s was a steak sandwich. In the 1940s, one of his employees added provolone cheese to the sandwich which created the first cheesesteak. This cheesesteak quickly became very popular.

I’ve had a few different cheesesteaks in Philly and Johns roast pork was my favorite. The actual roast pork sandwich was equally amazing. I live in Pittsburgh and we don’t have any sandwiches that compare.
Dalessandros in Roxborough is the best. I grew up in South Philly and have tried them all and remember when there was no Geno's. Jim's on SOuth Street is better than Pat's and Geno's. THere used to be a pizza place on Carpenter and Passyunk called Napoli's and that was far better than either Geno's or Pats. Dalessangdors I found in college and it is even better today.
Lived in Philly for 3 years until mid pandemic. My colleagues and new friends took me to Dalessandro’s, Angelo’s, Ishkabibble, John’s Roast Pork and Jim’s. All of them great. Sadly Jim’s burned down and closed shortly after I left. Told me to stay away from Pat’s, Geno’s and Tony Luke’s at all costs.
If that first spot is right off the highway, I think that was the Tony Luke's I went to back in 2010ish and it was phenomenal . Definitely looks different though. I've never seen them be stingy with the Whiz cheese though so that was weird. Geno and Pat's is a total tourist trap. Less food, and more expensive. Just go to Tony Luke's and you'll never be disappointed.

I love cheesesteaks. Last time in Philly, I made my way out to try Tony Luke's (now Tony and Nick's) and John's Roast Pork. 100% agree, thought John's roast pork was incredible (suprisingly, I thought the roast pork sandwich was kind of bland, but maybe the philly cheesesteak was too good haha). I've got to try Dalessandro's next time!
You can’t go wrong with the roll, so long as it’s not cheap and falling part. There is a time the place was seeded, crispy, and strong, but soaking up the juices.
More please - love this format and you guys are awesome - great bants.....Best Hotdog, Best Tacos, Best Shawarma, Best Fried chicken would be good if not done yet already.
Video hit it pretty much on the head. John's Roast Pork is the best despite it being the least classical Philly Cheese Steak. Genos and Pat's could have been omitted as sub par tourist trap steaks. There are so many other great cheesesteak spots, such as Angelo's, in Philly that were far more deserving to find a spot on this list.
Keep going gents. We dig your chemistry, great contrast of personalities. My first time in Philly I hit up both Pat’s and Geno’s one after the other. I was all-in for Pat’s, Whizz, no onions. Next time I’m going straight to John’s but for the pork sandwich.

Let's be honest, the people who cast all of the Food Wars hosts have amazing talent. You could do a Food Tours with any of them and it would be entertaining. Imagine a tour of Japan, India or China.
Amoroso is the standard roll, another alternative for seeded rolls is Sarcone's bakery. It about 3/4 of a block south on 9th street from Pat's steaks. They are famous for there tomato pies also. I believe one of the two (Geno's or Pat's) uses Sarcone's. But Amoroso's has a (or use to) have a industrial bakery around 54th & Haverford. They are a nationwide brand.
Come on, Pats & Genos is a tourist trap! Which is why y’all didn’t like them 😂 Still appreciate the Philly love ❤ Dalessandros is my go to fav, even if they’re out of the way!
From an Irish guy Dalessandros looked the nicest to me I agreed with the video that the very fine cut steak has a better chance of blending well with the cheese I feel like that's what makes a great Cheesesteak when the cheese and steak are blending well Genos for example too thick wouldn't blend well but Dalessandros you can tell that's perfectly blended steak and cheese
From an Irish guy if I was going to philly that's the place I'd like to try what I imagine as a great Cheesesteak it all comes down to the blend between the steak and the cheese that's where it lives or dies and Dalessandros definitely looked the best For that
I'm sad I moved out of the area before ever trying John's Roast Pork. But this is a pretty good compilation for a foreigner to experience. Dale's is easily my 2nd favorite after SQ Philip's which was sadly not visited here. Also, I would have recommended to visit Jim's on South but seeing that this was posted 1 month ago means that Jim's hasn't fully rebuilt yet. I know they had a fire not too long ago so it was just bad timing. Also, shoutout to going to Tony & Nick's, that's the one place I remember from my childhood going to that I forgot the name of. I remember my grandfather and my uncle both taking me there. I think my grandfather took me there when I was super young that I vaguely remember that being my first cheesesteak. Haven't had them in decades but I remember them being a proper joint to go to. For journalism's sake though, you definitely need to revisit and go to Jim's when they are finished rebuilding that way you can go across the street to Lorenzo's pizza and get yourself a slice to pair with a Jim's steak and wrap it in the pizza slice for a classic Philly Taco. Also, go to SQ Philip's, Gooey Louie's, Woodrow's (they have a special truffle whiz - not a fan, myself), Angelo's, Joe's, Tony Luke's (my least favorite), Steve's Prince of Steaks, Cleavers, Sonny's, Shank's, Max's, Ishkabibble's 1& 2, and of course DiNic's Pork & Beef for a full complete trip amongst the giants of cheesesteaks!
Yo, there is absolutely *no shame* in Philly going Provie on a cheesesteak. Some would argue that is the proper choice, myself included. Wit' or Wit'out. IYKYK.
Also why do you care where people go to eat food? lol Pats and Genos isn’t bad at all. I feel like you guys just hate anything mainstream. Sure there are other good places but dang bro lmao
I went to a concert and saw my cousin after the show at The Met. First time in Philly so I wanted a cheesesteak and it was around midnight. He said Pats and Genos are open and he recommended Genos. We bought some cheesesteaks from Genos and went and had them at his apartment. I’ve had my fair share of cheesesteaks but the one time I ever go to Philly and I had the worst cheesesteak of my life. Even writing this story is making me disgusted by that terrible cheesesteak (didn’t even have cheese)
the best Cheesesteak is hands down John's Roast Pork....Dalessandro's loses because of the bread...its too soggy and no one near the awesome rolls John's use
I used to be stationed in Maryland. Would go to Philly to see my brother in law. Seeing Johns and Tony and Nicks was a pleasant surprise. Man I miss a good cheesesteak. That and a Yuengling together is a legendary combo.
Sorry about the second post....Benjamin Franklin is buried with his wife Deborah at Christ Church 340 N 5th St, Philadelphia, PA 19106 (corner of 5th & Arch.) This is the Old City section of Center City Philadelphia. You can view the grave site from the street. It's the grave with all the pennies on it. Why? One of Franklin's most famous adages, “A penny saved is a penny earned,” has, over time, compelled thousands of visitors to toss pennies onto his marble grave marker at the Church Christ Burial Ground at 5th & Arch streets for luck. Also it's traditional for engaged couple to visit and both toss a penny, if it hits and stays on top you'll have a great marriage. Miss my Philly food scene. I’ve always said Philly is an underrated food haven. There’s so many great places to get great food. Best hoagie rolls in the world…it’s all about the bread 🥖, can’t find anything close to east coast breads anywhere else ❤
philly is an awesome underrated city
I miss Philly's food scene. California has great Mexican and Filipino food (I've moved to Cali from Philly). But nothing beats Philly's variety and signature foods.

Pat's and Geno's are the last places I would go for a steak when I come into town. I always hit Dalessandro's. I've always liked John's but they have more limited hours so it's harder for me to get there. Two other places not directly in Philly I like are Leo's (near the airport) and Pudge's (Blue Bell).
Are you talking about Leo’s on 13 in Folcroft? If so then they’re amazing! Highly recommended for anyone wanting a Philly cheesesteak but just don’t feel like driving into the city to one of the many spots for one.
Sonny's best in Philly
Gazzos in Pottstown is excellent!

And what was your top?
They are tourist traps at this point. Ask any locals and they will not recommend going there.
@@redeye1016 Of the 8 we tried, Angelo's was the clear winner
@@MrDiegoc16 That's absolutely what it felt like (and none of us were from Philly)
I hate that PAt's & Geno's will never go out of business because they're legacy places. Some of the worst steaks in the city.
03:09 "Sometimes Provolone"? Sorry...the answer is always provolone. Tourists get whiz...and who gets American cheese on their steak? 🙂 Honestly that's just how I feel...you do you. This reminds me of the many Philly conversations I've had that say you are not allowed to have mayo on an Italian Hoagie. Me, I prefer Oil and Vinegar but if you like mayo...go for it!!!
Provolone is what people in Indiana or Oregon get on a cheesesteak. Us Philly natives get American. It's literally an unspoken, default thing.

Jim’s SLAPS!!
Jim's has been the best since the 90's but if you get a chance Dalessandro's is pretty damn good too. This is not a list without Jim's.
A philly-steak sandwich is, pretty much, the best sandwich of them all. I loved watching this. Made me so hungry!
Dalessandro's is my one of my favorites Philly Cheesesteaks. Im so glad that it was picked as a winner for by a person who had never tried one until this very day. Glad you guys tried the tourist traps and saw through their 'rivalry' and veneers.

IYKYK.
I always make sure to go to Dalessandro's whenever I'm in Philly, but I'll definitely have to try that pork roast place!

I went to a concert and saw my cousin after the show at The Met. First time in Philly so I wanted a cheesesteak and it was around midnight. He said Pats and Genos are open and he recommended Genos. Yes my wife and I visited and both got the penny to stay on top, that was 45 years ago and we are going strong!
Cool history lesson. Thanks! 🙏🏻
