Flight to the Lights 2 - Six Hour Time Lapse (Starboard Side)

- Опубликовано: 22 мар 2018
- Flight to the Lights 2 was the second private chartered flight from New Zealand to fly south to the Antarctic circle with the aim to see and photograph the Aurora Australis, the southern lights. In 2017 a Boeing 767 was flown out of Dunedin, New Zealand, on the inaugural flight.
The plane departed Christchurch, New Zealand at 7.35pm on the 22nd of March, 2018, and landed at the same airport 10 hours later. The plane was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Air New Zealand. Only the window seats were sold on the flight, in seated pairs.
The time lapse, taken on the starboard side of the aircraft, is slightly cut down from it's original duration of seven hours; due to taking the westward track down we were exposed to more daylight than expected, so the first hour of the time lapse was deemed unnecessary.
One second of time lapse = one minute of real time.
Specs:
Camera: Sony a7S Mk1
Lens: ZEISS Batis 18mm f2.8
Duration: 3.2" exposures, 1 photo every 5 seconds.
Images processed in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and exported as a time lapse in Final Cut Pro 7.
Camera was fixed in place and mounted on a tripod on a seat, secured with a combination of gaffer tape and low-tack tape for securing to the window.
Special thanks must go to Ian Griffin and his staff of elves at the Otago Museum in Dunedin, Air New Zealand for providing the aircraft and extremely friendly and helpful flight crew, Orbit Travel Dunedin for organising the charter, NHNZ Ltd in Dunedin for the loan of my camera gear (and Braydon for the awesome ZEISS lens!), Jonathan's Photo Warehouse for graciously providing some camera bodies and lenses for passengers to use, plus Stephen, Taichi and Paul for helping to organise and run the successful event.

Hello, I am the son of Brad Phipps. This is a video about him going on a flight over Antarctica to see Auroras. Did you know that after, he got a beanie saying ‘Flight to the lights’ Enjoy!
Thanks buddy.

Thanks for such an amazing video. Money can't buy the joy and the feeling we get through watching this amazing phenomena call aurora Borealis in nort pole and aurora australis in the south pole.

Hi! Could the Telegraph use your video on our website and social media channels with on screen credit? Thanks!
Providing the video is unaltered, yes. Would prefer this link is shared rather than the video be edited. Thanks.
Thanks! Would you mind if we just take a clip out of the six minutes and put it into square format?
That's ok.
Thanks very much!
Honestly, you should get paid for this.
So close yet so far to go through it

Hello, I’m journalist for BFMTV.com, a French media. May I ask you if you would allow us to broadcast a short edit of your video on our website? Hope you will say yes. We will put a link to your page, website or Facebook page.

shooting star at 5:06
Or satellite
Are the Arora borealis only green colour?
Lord voldemort has come to conquer
Wow, I didn't even know DUD could even accommodate the 767.
Only just. The roar when it took off could be heard all over the city.
@@bradphippsnz But you wouldn't have taken any cargo on a sight seeing flight so that would help.
why is it impossible to see the southern lights from ushuaia? it's a city much closer to the south pole than the australian and new zealand coasts, it should look much better in argentina and chile. New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia are at temperate and even subtropical latitudes, while Patagonia is one step away from the Antarctic continent, it seems very strange that you can't see the southern lights from Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego
The magnetic pole which is currently closer to Australia / New Zealand than South America may have something to do with it.
This is real?
As someone who has seen auroras in real life yes.
How can the airplane rotate so quick?
It's a timelapse, not a video.
What curvature?
You can't see curvature from a commercial airplane. They don't fly high enough.
Its the entire world that you cant see from this point. Its a big planet we live on.
It’s not proof of either. But I say flat
if the sky looked like that before the whole air was polluted i too would question what the fuck am i here for and why are there animals and gods in the sky
পছা হইসে
KBS(South Korea) brought me here.
Earth flat
Nah man it round. Fuck you.
No it's a boomerang, how do you think it flies around the sun 🤔
