    HOW TO PLAY EASY UKULELE part 1 Introduction and Tuning and easy tune to play
    Update from Chili Monster:
    As the tune used in the video is just a made up on the spot thing I omitted a detailed description of strumming technique which several people have asked me to give more instruction on. The strum pattern I have used is basically DownDownUpDown DownUpDown DownUpDownUpDownUp for each chord, though you can vary it as u wish - it's really just to get you used to doing the chord changes. Check out the later lessons for more in depth stuff on strumming
    Lesson 1a here:-

    Lesson 6 covers timing and strumming here:-
    • How To Play Really Eas...
    WHEN I FIRST STARTED TO LEARN TO PLAY UKULELE
    IT STRUCK ME THAT THOUGH THERE ARE MANY PLACES ON THE INTERNET WHERE YOU CAN GET ALL SORTS OF AMAZINGLY GOOD TUTORIALS (PARTICULARLY ON RUclips)

    SO I DECIDED TO PRODUCE A SERIES OF UKULELE TUTORIALS THAT AN ABSOLUTE BEGINNER CAN USE TO LEARN HOW TO GET A TUNE OUT OF THE THING!
    SO IF YOU'VE JUST BOUGHT, FOUND, OR BEEN GIVEN A UKELELE,
    OR ARE THINKING OF TRYING ONE,
    THESE VIDEOS ARE DESIGNED FOR YOU
    IF YOU ALREADY PLAY UKULELE AND ARE LOOOKING TO IMPROVE YOUR TECHNIQUE THESE VIDEOS ARE DEFINITELY NOT FOR YOU -- BUT THERE IS LOADS OF STUFF ON RUclips THAT WILL HELP YOU SO GOOD HUNTING!

    At last! A tutor who doesn't waffle on and on but just speaks good, plain, common sense, SHOWS you how to play plus gives valuable and accurate advice (saves all that angst screaming at the screen, 'Oh, just get on with it...!') Love all the on screen vignettes too. Thank you so much, made my day!

    I finished making my ukulele a couple days ago and I haven't wanted to put it down but I have never played a guitar or anything and within a day of watching all your videos I am already playing my own little tunes with the chords you taught me :) Thank you so much, with the little diagrams and your explanations your videos are so easy to follow

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  12 лет назад

    Yes ADF#B is usually used for tenor & baritone Ukes - It is 2 semi-tones up from the usual soprano tuning of GCEA so the chord shapes all work, they are just 2 semitones higher (ie C becomes D, D becomes E etc)

    I am going to get my entire family ukes for Christmas. That is 17. I'm overwhelmed at the thought, but I have a few months :) We'll all be watching tour tutorials! They are very good, and some of the family will need all the help we can get.

    Thanks a lot! I just got a ukulele 7 days ago as a 30th birthday present from a few friends. My dad is a good guitar player and so was my mom back in the day, but I never picked it up. I'm now trying to learn some basic ukulele and your video was at just the right level!

    Just hit 60 and my wife bought me an Ashbury Concert Uke (with lessons from local tutor) Eeek! Just seen what she's invested in me and I think your website may be of great value. Have already mastered lesson 1 and thought I'd better say thank you to you cos I feel I've made progress already. Just tuning it with yours has made a big difference! Have Dummies book and tuner on way from amazon too. Thanks and gonna watch and play along with your other vids now. Cheers and thanks again.

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  12 лет назад

    try tuning the baritone Uke to ADF#B - You can then use the chord shapes in the lessons the chords played will be 2 semi tones up - ie G chord becomes A, C becomes D, E becomes F#, A becomes B and all the others in between - however remember that B will become C# as it too goes up 2 semitones

    Thank you so much for this vid. I learned guitar in high school, but I'm completely tone deaf. It was such a relief to find a vid that went riiiiight back to basics AND included the strumming pattern. I'm hopeless at figuring those out :)

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  11 лет назад

    Hi Ebru - It depends on the strum pattern you are playing some patterns just use down strokes some use upstrokes some use up and down strokes. Most simple patterns use up/down type strums like the one in this lesson. Hope that helps

    You never know! We have a jazz guitarist and pianist, my husband and I play chords and pick guitar a little. Some are tone deaf, but what a fun endeavor! Thanks for your channel.

    @AdiAkinbaiye - try watching lesson 1a if you haven't already done so - use your thumb to strum downwards and first finger to strum upwards. Basically its just practice like anything else - eventually you will develop slight callouses on your fingers & thumb which will stop it being painful

  • @shinbane
    @shinbane 11 лет назад

    thanks for the help! got a uke for christmas and trying hard to get the hang of it..you certainly make my family happier..after watching this and practicing its more'that sounds better' and less 'what a racket!' thanks again :-)

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  12 лет назад

    Currently sadly not as I don't have a tenor Uke - however you can still use the lessons to learn your tenor uke as it is tuned 2 semi tones up from GCEA to ADF#B so the chords played will be 2 semi tones up too - ie G chord becomes A, C becomes D, E becomes F#, A becomes B and all the others in between - however remember that B will become C# as it too goes up 2 semitones. Perhaps I will one day get a tenor and baritone and do some stuff on them...

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  12 лет назад

    changing to aquila strings is a good move - it takes a while for the strings to settle down and then they should soon start to hold their tuning. Also if the machine heads are friction type they may not hold tuning as well as geared heads

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  12 лет назад

    if its the C string it should be a whole octave lower than the other strings - make sure you're not trying to tune it to a high C by unwinding the machine head until the string is slightly slack then slowly tune it up to the first C that registers on the tuner

    Brilliant video lesson series! I will definitely be recommending these and will put a link on our ukes4fun website. I started from scratch 5 years ago, knowing nothing about music or ukes, and learned most of this stuff after accidentally getting locked in a garden shed for 6 hours with two ukes and another Salop uke-monster :-) Now this invaluable learning experience can be enjoyed virtually by anyone with access to the internet - minus the perils of getting snagged on a rusty scythe!

    Hi tornadamang - As the tune is just a made up on the spot thing you can really strum as many times as feels right. The strum pattern is basically DownDownUpDown DownUpDown DownUpDownUpDownUp for each chord, though you can vary it as u wish - it's really just to get you used to doing the chord changes. Check out the later lessons for a bit more in depth strumming - hope that helps and thanks for commenting

  • @287monty1
    @287monty1  12 лет назад

    @DjayLey I would suggest that you try out the Uke you have first and see how you like playing it, then if you decide to keep playing perhaps look at upgrading then. For strumming try using just the thumb to strum downwards and the first finger to strum upwards. For picking have a look at lesson 5.

    The Uke that I use is a concert size so will sound warmer than a standard/soprano size. Its a Brunswick BU4C. Also it has aquila strings which also sound really good - so maybe just changing the strings will help. Also playing with fingers sounds more mellow than using plectrum - there are many factors involved - its hard to say without hearing/playing the Uke ... hope that helps a bit?

    @TheOisSilent - it depends very much on your budget and whether you just want to try and see how you get on with the Uke before committing to it or are determined to play Uke no matter what ... in the first case i would suggest getting something like a Kohala HU212 which you can get for around £40 in the UK or something of similar quality - Brunswick have some nice Ukes in this price range too. In the second case get the best Uke you can afford because you are gonna want it later anyway! contd:-
