You should probably listen to their very first and most psychedelic album - "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", which was released in 1967. This is the only album that was recorded with the participation of Syd Barrett, while he was still sane
I would definitely do Meddle next. It's just a fantastic album, where a lot of creativity has gone into it. If only because of Echoes and Fearless, I would do it next
The division bell, although releasing in 1994 and coming after “The Final Cut” 1983 (the next album after The Wall) and “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” 1987, it’s seen as their best album post the big 4 (70’s)
As a fairly average guitar is I can say that it’s not so much that what he playing is difficult (although it is absolutely masterful) it’s more that he’s able to channel such raw emotion into his playing. Anyone can learn that solo note by note but to be able to play it with such FEELING is where gilmour shines and why such musicians are few and far between. Big love bois ❤
Agreed wholeheartedly! I first learned to play the solo without mistakes when I was 15. I'm 30 now, and have played it on and off for another 15 years, and still just can't get it to sound and feel anywhere close to what Gilmour can do.
There's a difference between playing the notes and making music. There's many an argument about who did "the Great Gig in the Sky" better, but it was Richard Wright, Clare Torry and Alan Parsons who actually *made* the music.
Actually it is very difficult because of the precision of Gilmour's vibrato and bends. That skill is just as difficult as the twiddly fast stuff people do that seems more impressive at first glance.
I saw them in DC in 94 and it was one of the most memorable experiences in my longish life. So loud. So clean. So absolutely mesmerizing. We were taken to another place.
Anything Pink Floyd does from this Pulse concert is equivalent to almost any other group's Grand finale!! Do High Hopes from this concert to see David Gilmour play the lap steel guitar.
David didn't just have to play those solos. He also had to create and write them from scratch. He had to listen to the unfinished song and then create solos that would match the intensity, tone and feel of the song while also lifting and propelling it upwards and forwards.
8:00 When I went to the opening show of this tour in Miami Florida the crowd was just in awe, showing the music the reverence it deserves, I probably only blinked about 5 times during the whole show....It was respected and treated like being at a symphony by almost everyone that was in my section of the infield 17 rows from the stage....That was my experience with the crowd anyway.... Wherever life finds you I hope it finds you and those that you love safe and well....AHIMSA🕉️
This solo, in my opinion, is the greatest of all time. It's not the most technically complex, but man, it's the most emotional and evocative piece of guitar work of all time.
30 Years ago fellas. Check out the rest of this concert as there a 10 more one of a kind Pink Floyd performances. To me. In my opinion they all were at the pinnacle It’s the best concert ever. Ever !!
I was lucky to be born "early" enough to see it at 18... As a HUGE Floyd fan since my 12, it was unexpected, to happen, and unexpected to reach this level of quality for a post Waters production. And they played Dark Side, started with Astronomy Domine, the only regret, is that I couldn't realize what happened. I couldn't realize being "there" in the crowd in front of my favorite band... So I've got that blurry memory as if it was a dream. I wish I could have a recorder in my brain to play it again. It was in Bordeaux, France, summer 94... Open air concert in the middle of the town, neighbors where watching and listening at the windows, we started the sun was sill there, and finished like 3 hours later in the night, with lasers and fireworks. Crazy.
If you guys want a new Pink Floyd album there are a few options. I can’t remember if you guys have done Meddle yet, but that is the album with the studio version of Echoes, which is probably better than any live version. Meddle is the obvious choice for the next album, but I will give you a couple more options, namely The Division Bell and Atom Heart Mother. The Division Bell is more conventional and contemporary, whereas Atom Heart Mother is strange, unique, and has a 24 minute epic (called Atom Heart Mother (suite)) longer than Echoes with a full orchestra. The Division Bell has no real “weak” tracks, whereas Atom Heart Mother has a track that is weak to some people called Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast. This song starts with breakfast noises and is kinda weird for the first 6 minutes, but then is slowly transitions into an ending of epic proportions that almost reaches the heights of Atom Heart Mother (suite). Atom Heart Mother is typical early Floyd with higher highs and lower lows, whereas The Division Bell has one or two mediocre tracks and a lot of really incredible ones. Your choice, I guess, Meddle (probably the best choice), Atom Heart Mother, or The Division Bell!
This concert (Pulse) was at the end of their career as PF. The staging and lighting (in 1994) cost 25 million. PF concerts are immersive. And no, their audiences never freak out during performances. It is about the music and the presentation of the music. Maybe consider watching the entire concert--there is not 1 weak performance in the whole show. This tour also included the entire performance of 'Dark Side of the Moon.'
The young guy on bass is the keyboardist’s son-in-law. He’s replacing Roger Waters on stage. Other 3 members are there. By the way, saw them on this tour, and it was as good as you think.
The big disco ball is highly symbolic. First of all, it wasn't seen until the lights spotted it. It was simply not there! Hidden in a box in the ceilling. So when it got lit, you can understand why the audience went wild. And then, when it opened up and showed the shining diamond that's inside, a direct reference to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (which refer to Syd Barrett), the fans understood! Genius! What's more? This is one of the 3 songs they in the « encore ».
Yeh not the most technically advanced, fast thrash, but just absolutely off the scale with technique, feeling and accuracy. You can play a note and then "bend" the string to reach a higher note. All you have to do is hear and feel exactly how far to bend, and then simply never miss!😂 Oh and it's not just a single semitone tone up, or two or three in some tracks Dave Gilmour is bending up to five semitones.... And that's insanely hard and insanely tough on the fingers. By bending from one note to the next it adds texture, and feeling. Even when it's done quickly the human brain can "ride the wave" it's makes a curve instead of a sharp step. It's an art and DG is one of the masters.
I was actually there that night and, let me tell you, the crowd was virtually silent throughout the guitar solos - except for the helpless sobbing from both men and women! It was, and remains, the single greatest experience of my life.
Did you say 10 years of experience LOL. Try 40+ years by this point. Gilmour picked up the guitarwhen he was 13. He's nearly 50 here! He's been playing with Floyd since 68!!
“Kids that “10 yrs of experience” right there, was actually 32yrs. Working it out from the years of the release of the album Pulse. And the year of his birth, minus 12 years which I have heard him say in interviews was when he started playing guitar. Keep at it. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Not giving up is half the battle.
So nice for an older man of 55 to see younger people appreciate one of the biggest and best bands ever. There was a time when you had to have talent to become a star. Auto-Tune is a fairly new thing. But if you like guitar solos, check out Gary Moore Parisienne Walkways LIVE. Greetings from Norway. 😀
If i remember the younger guy is guy pratt who they had for roger waters vocal and some guitar. As a number of the peices require the contrast in voices.they were fantastic live
Ayyy let’s gooo!!! David Gilmore from Pink Floyd is the reason I picked up a guitar a couple years ago, I am now about 3/4 of the way through the solo and it’s fucking awesome. It’s super easy to get discouraged from playing guitar, stick with it and have fun!
I saw this show twice. Once at yankee stadium and again at giants stadium where they played all of Dark Side. And it was their final concert in North America.
Awesome song. Guy Pratt plays bass and sings on this, legendary session musician. He played the bass on Like A Prayer by Madonna and loads of other tunes.
Congrats on the guitar. Don't get discouraged, stick with it, practice regularly, and it'll provide you with a lifetime of joy. Welcome to the brotherhood!
Nice! You’ve learned a couple of chords, and that’s where you start. David is one of the greatest guitar players to ever live. Don’t worry too much about trying to do what he does, just do your thing.
Pulse is such a wild version of the song. Slower tempo, pitched down in the intro. Absolutely HAUNTING. David's guitar sounds like it's crying out near the end
run like hell from the same live concert is AS sick if not even underrated, def recommend giving it a listen as it was a closer for the concert, they went absolutely sicko
Y’all are just starting to discover master guitar players. So many out there to choose from. SRV, Robin Trower, Edie Hazel, EVH, Alex Lifeson, Roy Clark, and on and on
The bassist here is Guy Pratt, he’s had a great career as a session bassist and with his own musical projects too. Done some acting too. Very impressive CV
Guys, it's pronounced GIL-MORE with the accent on GIL, spelled Gilmour. The same long haired guitarist/vocalist in Echoes @ Pompeii where he was 25. This is him at 48 years old at the Pulse show. Besides David, the other original band members here are Rick Wright and Nick Mason. The young kid you mentioned is Guy Pratt who took over from Roger on the bass.
Other live tracks to check by other artists - Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road from the Alchemy tour. AC/DC - Let there be Rock - Live at River Plate The Who - Wont get fooled again - Live at Shepperton Studios
The division bell, although releasing in 1994 and coming after “The Final Cut” 1983 (the next album after The Wall) and “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” 1987, it’s seen as their best album post the big 4 (70’s)
There's 3 version of the best Comfortably Numb live performances. Stage-wise : 1. Pink Floyd Live Pulse 1994 (that giant disco ball is just unbelievable) 2. Pink Floyd Live Delicate Sound of Thunder 1988 (had a very awesome ambience) 3. David Gilmour Live Pompeii 2016 (the best lighting stage ever) Guitar Solo-wise : 1. David Gilmour Live Pompeii 2016 (definitely the best Guitar Tone and Guitar Solo ive ever heard) 2. Pink Floyd Live Delicate Sound of Thunder 1988 (that high note is purely eargasm) 3. Pink Floyd Live Pulse 1994 Pink Floyd is really the greatest live performance band in the world, looking forward for another Pink Floyd Live reaction.
Just scored tickets for David Gilmour's show in LA later this year. Probably his last outing. He'll leave most 70's Floyd out of the show, but this song will definitely be played and it's going to be awesome. Pulse was one of my first concerts and have seen many of the solo shows (mainly Roger Waters since). They were always amazing shows.
If you liked Gilmour and Pink Floyd, you should try with Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits.... The easier way to start, it's Sultans of Swing on Alchemy Live album.
Yes, it was "The Division Bell" tour in support of that album release in 1994. "Pulse" is the name of the live album and video that followed. @@ignaciopillado6778
For me, the greatest guitar solo I've ever heard is a tossup between this and Prince's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" solo at the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performance.
Stick with that guitar buddy ! The first 6 mths can be torture and if you are anything like me you will think "I'm never going to be able to play" but if you keep going and really put the practice in you will be paid back in so many ways. I started playing at 16 and 40 years later still reach for my guitar just to bring some peace and joy into my life and have never regretted all those blisters ! Love the reaction btw, great to see people really appreciating music I know and love.
Don’t forget a lot of the crowd will have smoked spliffs (joints) before the show and would be riding the Floyd trip so not jumping around all the time. A few people dancing to the sides no doubt but generally blissfully or comfortably numb within themselves.
I was at this very gig. The video editors must’ve toned down the audience because when this was played the crowd were going wild throughout. By the second solo we raised the roof. One of the best nights of my life.
If you haven’t already you should check out Since I’ve Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin. It’s kinda similar in the sense that it’s a long, slow emotional but also epic song with a great solo. I’m 17 so pretty young for a classic rock fan like y’all and it’s one of my all time favorites
With david Gilmore its more about heart and soul than technicality. You're really going to have to do Dire Straits - sultans of swing live (alchemy version)
He got better with age. Keep on rockin' boys. This is probably the best prog rock song ever -- definitely the best guitar solo. The best prog rock album ever is Dark Side of the Moon. Even though I'm a hard core YES fan.
If you want to hear crazy live performances, then listen to Swans Are Dead by Swans. It's a 140 minute culmination of everything the band was doing up to that point. I was lucky enough to see the band live this April, and it was insane. It was so loud that it seemed like the whole room was shaking. What was even crazier is that the first song they played lasted 76 MINUTES!! Afterwords the singer asked how long it was, and when someone told him he was just like "aight, damn.", and they just immediately went to the next song. It was fucking great.
After seeing Water's The Wall concert 20 years after seeing PF Pulse, The Wall was a much better concert experience. Check out The Wall concert from 10 years ago, if available.
The wall wouldnt even be in my top 5 floyd albums, but that Roger waters wall show is the best( visually stunning and entertaining) show ive ever seen.
David Gilmour (one of the most talented guitar players in history) looks like he could go to the house fix any plumbing or electrical issue in the house, drop the most epic guitar solo you have ever seen or heard, leaves the house and your wife and dog are both pregnant! He is so good that the guitar is another singer in the band.
Yeah.. it's not how to play the songs it's to sound like Gilmour... I've been chasing his tone for years and yeah, I can play them... but his playing is just one of a kind
First of all, there is nothing at all wrong with an Alverez guitar. Congratz. From what I heard, it sounds just fine. In my opinion, learn some riffs and chords you want to learn. When you get bored, try learning some complete songs. Just the chords. Then when you are ready, learn some scales. I would say Pentatonic to start and maybe the Natural minor scale Aeolian which is the 6th mode of the major scale (but don't worry about that right now) But those are the two scales David Gilmour likes to play the most. When you practice by yourself, don't be afraid to put emotion into what you play, like a natural body movement or a guitar face. Do what feels natural to you personally. Don't try to copy an artist, like Angus Young of AC DC. You will look cheap and ridiculous. Just be yourself. People like authenticity when you play. Are you energetic? or subtle? You figure that out. You have a good friend there, let him critique you. I'm almost 71 years old and have played since 10. I don't think you want my years old opinion. But listening to your friend will give you some honest insight he has of you. That is the best possible advice I can give to the both of you. Don't give up. Music is a journey that lasts a lifetime, and you will never learn it all no matter how good you get. My absolute best to you both.
What Pink Floyd album should we do next?
You should probably listen to their very first and most psychedelic album - "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", which was released in 1967. This is the only album that was recorded with the participation of Syd Barrett, while he was still sane

Can we tell them to not listen to Seamus?
Live in Pompeii is peak Floyd for me

Great opinion, it's all about emotion!🏴
When gilmour plays, he paints a picture, tells a story, takes you on a journey, no one does it the way gilmour does
Actually it is very difficult because of the precision of Gilmour's vibrato and bends. That skill is just as difficult as the twiddly fast stuff people do that seems more impressive at first glance.
And amazingly, here we are 30 years later and David Gilmour is about to go on tour again.
I am so haapy to hear Mr. Gilmour is going on tour.
Goosebumps? I was crying my eyes out listening/watching to this!
Me too, everytime!
My father was able to go see Floyd live during their Pulse tour and I'm incredibly jealous😭
We saw that tour at Sun Devil stadium. From what I remember, it was awesome. 😎
I was at Earls Court for this very show. You're right to be jealous.
I saw them in DC in 94 and it was one of the most memorable experiences in my longish life. So loud. So clean. So absolutely mesmerizing. We were taken to another place.
I saw this tour in Atlanta 1994 it was fantastic ❤

The live version of The Wall is pretty good too! Super high effort, especially for the early eighties; giant puppets, an actual wall being built, etc.
I was at this gig in Earl's Court in London 1994. Unreal atmosphere unbelievable performance

If you want to go full on Pink Floyd larp with the guitar you could name it "Vera" :d
The Berlin performance of the wall album is one of the best interpretations of the album and the most significant

There's 3 version of the best Comfortably Numb live performances.
Stage-wise :

2. Pink Floyd Live Delicate Sound of Thunder 1988 (that high note is purely eargasm)
3. Pink Floyd Live Pulse 1994
Pink Floyd is really the greatest live performance band in the world, looking forward for another Pink Floyd Live reaction.

Saw this at Arrowhead stadium. Best concert ever.
I think the thing about playing musical instruments and singing at the same time is difficult at first, but becomes self reinforcing.
Keep practicing. Guitar is addicting. You'll feel amazing and have a great hobby to always turn to. Its also a really great way to not procastrinate.
Watch Sorrow from pulse concert for another classic guitar solo also On The Turning Away 1988 live great reaction
The young bass player is Guy Pratt, he came in to replace Roger Waters after he left the band, he’s actually a super talented musician
but why cut the video ?
From the same Pulse collection, please check out SORROW, and also RUN LIKE HELL.
Their is only a few that can play an instrument that actually brings an emotion. Dave is one of the best without lyrics to bring out emotion.
please react to Shine on You Crazy Diamond from the same concert! It is my favorite Pink Floyd song and it will take you on a massive trip.
watch the wall live at earls court 1980 VHS. It's not perfect quality but it's a full look at the 80/81 shows and the wall only theatrics
Wonderful to listen to your sound bites and cliches, it takes me back a few years to when Dumb and Dumber were popular.
THANKS...DIVISION BELL next pls...
you guys have to watch the Delicate sounds of thunder show!
@@doscwolny2221 Other than Prince Purple Rain 85, it was the best concert I have ever seen and I can't stand Waters.
The next should be Pink Floyd live 2005 (the last Concert, it´s great!)
Momentary Lapse of Reason is amazing
The entire Pulse concert
David Gilmour (one of the most talented guitar players in history) looks like he could go to the house fix any plumbing or electrical issue in the house, drop the most epic guitar solo you have ever seen or heard, leaves the house and your wife and dog are both pregnant! He is so good that the guitar is another singer in the band.
If you want to hear something dramatic and atmospheric try Rachelle Rhienne Shaking up the Clouds
Favid gilmours recording studio is a boat called the Astoria
Yeah.. it's not how to play the songs it's to sound like Gilmour... I've been chasing his tone for years and yeah, I can play them... but his playing is just one of a kind
LIVE RADIOHEAD!!! 2017 SHOW OR 2012 SHOW?!?!?
Check out the 'great day for freedom' solo on live from gdansk..think it actually blows this one away in terms of emotion.
David is a worldwide treasure.
Don't talk on a Gilmour 's solo anymore!! ❤️Love😉
