    Finally got around to make the prop this year! Only problem is the weights only stay to one side of the tunnel. Not sure what I did wrong to correct it

    • @Thrice1337
      @Thrice1337 Год назад

      Ha! Just thought of an idea to fix it as I typed out this message. Tried it and it works! Putting a piece of hanger on the same side as the tunnel so as the candle swings back around, it hits the hanger and moves the weights to the other side. This piece is sticking out of the 5 1/2 in board in between the tunnel and the motor. Hope this helps someone if they have the same issue!

      Thanks Black Shutter for the information on your build. Yes, when dealing with balance and weights some adjustments need to be made... but the floating effect is hard to beat!

  • @Bobsheaux
    @Bobsheaux 2 года назад +1

    I'm seeing how it's done, but I'm not seeing how the effect translates into the finished shots. I mean, yes, you say that it's all about clever lighting and prop placement, but I would think I should see SOME kind of hint of the rods holding the candles up, or maybe their shadows... (You're not cheating with this one by using digital effects, are you? lol) If it really IS just a matter of how you light these pieces, maybe a video tutorial on effective lighting might be in order?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  2 года назад

      Hi Bob, nope no cheating here. I can see a bit of the rods in the videos, but then I know where to look too. Great idea for a lighting tutorial ... perhaps next season.

    Very cool. Any way to make the connections longer so that the candles can be up much higher for use as floating candles in a front yard cemetery?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  4 года назад +1

      That would all depend on the length of rods available. You might want to look into strong fiberglass ones, like those used for fishing poles.

    Love your tutorials. So easy to follow. However, while this is an awesome and spooky looking floating candle, I can see it being extremely difficult hiding the whole apparatus behind the candle. I think that hiding the parts you don't want seen will be a bit too hard for this build.
    I see how you hid the balancing/floating apparatus for one of the candles in your display, but I can't see how you hid the second one, which is great, that's just what you want, but my imagination on how to make other props and decorations hide those parts is not as keen as yours.

      That is the beauty of an atmosphere shrouded in darkness, you can create magic. With carefull lighting and item placement, you can seemingly make candels float!

    Ok, I made this little prop! But - I couldn't find the bead or any size near it in any of the Hobby and fabric stores near me, so I ended up making a small square Cube. Also couldn't find those Lead weights. Do you have any suggestions for the weights and any thought on using a cube in place of the bead?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  5 лет назад +2

      Sorry that you had a hard time finding some of the items. The square bead should work just as well, however the fishing weights are a different story. Because they are lead, compact and have the loop on the end they are really ideal. Try an outdoor sports store (Dick's) or a fishing and tackle shop that sells live bate or check out Walmart since they usually have a fishing section. Alternatively, secure a small can or baggie on that end and load with pennies until you get the proper balance. The drawback is that they are not as condensed and more apt to get in the way of a smooth movement. Hope that helps.

    Will this be the same mechanism for the floating candleabra

    Do two candles require TWO separate & complete motorized units? Or is there a way to put them together?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  5 лет назад +1

      Yes they do, plus it allows them to have two different movements independent of each other. Thanks for asking Terri.

    Love this tutorial! I have one question: I'd like to recreate this with a small candelabra rather than a single candle. Since it will be heavier, I'm assuming I may need to add additional counterweights? Is there a golden rule for the ratio between candle and combined total of the weights?

    • @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms
      @HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms  Год назад +1

      Hi Michael, thanks for watching and for asking. Right off the bat I will advise you to steer clear from heavy metal or resin multi-arm candelabras. Look for a hallow plastic, light weight, 3 arm maximum candelabra.
      The one rule of thumb would be that the longer the rod portion is from the balance point, the more leverage you will have. Meaning, you will need less weight as a counter balance. So the trade off is either having a larger, bulkier sized weight and a shorter rod or a smaller sized weight but a longer rod.
      Both present their own unique probles of hiding and canceling from view. Please let me know how it turns out and send a picture of your final build if you can.

      @webhead215 Год назад +1

      @@HALLOWEENHOWTObySaulFilms Thanks for the reply! I'm definitely planning on making the candelabra out of PVC to try and keep the weight down. That's a great tip about the leverage; I never would've thought of that. Think I'll try with less weight first and make adjustments as needed.
