  • Madame Leota Tutorial : How I created this classic Disney Haunted Mansion Effect
    Greetings Foolish Mortals!!!! I hope this DIY tutorial finds you well. My oldest son was getting married and the theme for his wedding was non other than Disney's Haunted Mansion. He wanted some of the effects from the Disney ride incorporated into his reception. I was asked to recreate the Madame Leota Talking Crystal Ball. Unfortunately, I was given this task at the last hour so time was shoort. However, I think it turned out pretty well. I decided, after the fact, to put this tutorial together and share what I did so that all you disembodied spirits could create your own display. Use it for what you will Halloween or a wedding, but have fun.
    Any questions, please leave me a comment and I will try to get back with you in a timely manner.
    Here is the link to my website where you can download my 30 minute looping Madame Leota Video that I edited as I stated in the tutorial. Remember it was made to be projected from about 40 inches away from the Madame Leota Face in your Crystal Ball. Otherwise, you will have to edit it yourself if you lengthen or shorten the distance.

    Here is the link to BenneLukes version of the Madame Leota Loop with the blue Halo that I used to create my looping video if you would rather start from scratch:

    Most of the items I used can be found at a local Hobby Shop, Halloween store, Amazon or Ebay.
    The size of the crystal ball is approximately 14 inches in diameter and has an opening of about 9 inches. (A lot of people ask me this so I figured I'd just put it in the description)
    I would suggest starting early and trying to find the old animatronic on ebay or market sites, during the off season you can generally find them hear and there pretty cheap. That way you can use the legs for your display as well.
    However, as many do including myself I wait until the last minute to find what I need:
    ** I FOUND THIS WEBSITE: iLighting.com**
    ilighting.com/products/14-cle...
    **THIS WEBSITE HAS THE 14INCH ARCYLIC GLOBE/CRYSTAL BALL AND YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE THE OPENING TO THE 9.5INCHES THAT YOU NEED. IT WILL RUN YOU ABOUT $45.00 FOR THE GLOBE INCLUDEING TAX AND I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE SHIPPING SINCE IT WILL DEPEND ON WHERE THEY ARE SHIPPING IT TO. HOWEVER, THIS IS A GREAT OPTION FOR YOUR PROJECT AND EASIER THAN FINDING HE ANIMATRONIC. ***PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE NOT PURCHASED ONE OF THESE ITEMS YET, BUT HAVE SEEN ANOTHER PERSON USE THERE PRODUCT FOR A MADAME LEOTA PROJECT AND IT LOOKED GREAT**
    The projector I used in this project is no longer available, but here is a link to a similar one.

    WOW, that's so cool! I've been fascinated with Madam Leota since I was a kid (57 now). I've always built things like lit-up coffins and cool spider webs, witch's smoking cauldron over burning coals, but my Golden Grail has always been this. I'm going to attempt it this year but the editing of video is so intimidating! Never been anywhere near that kind of stuff. Got all summer to work on it though. I just love this, it's awesome!

    In the process of making this using your tutorial…. So far so good! The foam clay took a bit of trial as I’m not used to it’s texture but came out decent. Was able to get the same witch globe head and book box too. My daughter and I actually got the head off and with a little ingenuity are using the whole base so the globe can screw on and off if the head ever needs replacement or repair! Thank you so much for posting this as we are hard core Disney fans!

    • @Vincent_Serpico
      @Vincent_Serpico  2 года назад +2

      Thank you Gypsy Moon Tarot, I appreciate the compliment. As far as projecting from the below/beneath uses a technique that uses mirrors in a periscoping fashion. I have seen others use it on other videos, but have not tried it myself. The projection technique worked well enough for me and I have not had time to try the periscope method. Although, it would solve the issue of the refection of the projection on the crystal ball. So if you look at some other DIY videos some use this method. Here is an example of what I mean, this guy uses this method, but it is pretty entailed. I was pressed for time when I created the illusion and didn't have time to do it. Hope this helps!

    Wondering, Im going to build it from scratch so WHAT SIZE is the Acrylic ball across? and what size s the opening?

    • @Vincent_Serpico
      @Vincent_Serpico  2 года назад

      Thanks John, the globe I used is approximately 12inches in diameter, give or take, and the opening for the wig head is about 9inches. However, as you can see from my video, I reused a mechanical witch head prop that I was able to purchase cheap. Those are not always available to use and can get expensive. I have not tried it myself but I know others have used light acrylic globe lamp covers. A normal styrofoam wig head is about 5.5 inches across so the opening needs to be at least that, but it would be safer if it were around 6 or 6.5". Sometimes you can find these types of globes at hobby shops and the like. Hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions. Also, I love seeing end results. If you can shoot me a quick video through my email: DocHollidaysGameEmporium@gmail.com.

    Would be nice to find the Madam Leota from 2006 movie to change things up a bit. She was pretty funny and said a lot more. I used your suggestions with a 16" globe and foam head and small projector. Looks and sounds great. Rather than continuous looping when there is no one watching it, it would be nice to emply a motion sensor. But doing that with a projector seems unlikely because of the setup sequence one must go through to get to, open and launch the files. Thx for the insight.

      Glad to hear your project is coming along. I do not have any ventilation in my set up. The projector I used seem to be ok without it. However, having said that I know you probably have a different projector. I would just test it out for a bit, if you notice it getting too hot then ventilation holes may need to be made.

    How did you solve for the blue halo projecting behind the globe? Did you just tease the hair big enough to catch it all or was there another trick. I’m about 40 inches away using your video download and I do notice a large blue around the back wall. Haven’t played with the hair yet but trying to make sure I go in the right direction.

    • @Vincent_Serpico
      @Vincent_Serpico  2 года назад

      Michael, you may have to play with the distance a bit. 40 inches was approximate, so you may need to move it up or back a little. I'm not sure how big you have the hair around your wig head, but I would try to have it fill as much of the inside of the crystal ball as you can. This should help with cancelling out the outer rim of the projection. However, it may also be the type of projector your using, all are a bit different. Let me know if this helps.

    Vincent - great prop and great video - thanks. I am trying to do a more custom version of this for our home attraction this year (it’s our 30th anniversary)…… I wanted to film either myself or one of my grandsons and have us lead a seance in a seance room. 2 Questions - 1) do you have any experience making your own videos? 2) Any advice on how to do this attraction with a thin shell head and a projector inside of it? Thanks , Sal Calta

    • @Vincent_Serpico
      @Vincent_Serpico  Год назад

      Thanks for the compliment on my prop. To answer your 1st question, yes, I do have some experience, not professional level by any means, but some. As far as the 2nd question, give me a few more details about what you are trying to do. Do you have the thin shell head already? I believe in order to get the effect you want, you may need to use a periscoping technique. I originally was going to use this technique for my prop, but abandoned it because it entails more setup to achieve the effect, and I was limited on time. However, in theory it eliminates the projector having to project the image from outside the head or crystal ball. Can you send me a few pics of what you have or what you are trying to achieve. I'll do some brainstorming and try to come up with something for you.

    Did you have to trim the neck portion of the foam head in order to fit in the crystal ball?

    • @Vincent_Serpico
      @Vincent_Serpico  2 года назад +1

      It depends on the foam wig head you buy, the one I used did not need to be trimmed, but I know that others come with a larger base for balance. The neck itself should not be larger than the head, but if it is for some reason and you can't fit it in, taking a bit off should not ruin the effect.

    Hi,
    I came across your video and was immediately inspired to try it. I have pretty much have everything. Just Recieved the Spirit ball from eBay and went to test out the projection which looked perfect when shot directly onto the foam head… but when I put the clear Acrylic ball over it, I got a full face projection of Madame Leota on both the front of the ball and head. How do I get rid of the full faced image showing up on the ball? I know you mentioned getting rid of a small light around the mouth by using candles, but I am having issues just having the image on the head and not on the ball. Could it be that my projector has too many Lumens/Lux (too bright)? Mine has 9500 Lumens. I got one this high so the image would show up even in a room with Ambient light. I hope you can help. Thank you in advance.

    • @Vincent_Serpico
      @Vincent_Serpico  10 месяцев назад

      Sorry to hear that you are having this issue. I'll try to trouble shoot a bit for you. First, check your spirit ball you purchased from ebay. The ones that I have used always seem to have one side of the crystal ball slightly frosted opposed to the side that you could see the head through. Are you making sure that the projection is going through the non-frosted side? If you are trying to do it through the frosted side you may have that happen. Second, I'm not sure why a higher lumen would cause the projection to appear on the ball an face, but one way to find out would be to put a tinted filter in front to reduce the lumens and see if that eliminates the issue. Let me know if either suggestion works, if not, I'll try to figure something out for you.

    • @johnburgos1073
      @johnburgos1073 10 месяцев назад

      Hi,
      Thank you for the quick reply. I just the the Lumens might be so bright that the shine from the plastic ball might be picking the image up. But I just discovered something. I am projecting through the correct side that is not frosted fully (front). When I look closer it looks like the front does have some frost…Very thin…You have to get up close to see it, but it is there. Looks like it was done on purpose to make look more magical, I guess. I will try to remove the paint from the front with a thinner. Do you have a recommendation for a spray paint thinner that won’t ruin the clear plastic. I don’t want to make it worse. Thank you kindly for your help.

    • @Vincent_Serpico

      @@johnburgos1073 You can use 70% isopropyl alcohol on the plastic, this should remove any residue or slight bit of paint without ruining the plastic. No, sorry to hear that. The one I used seem to be pretty clear. I did have to increase the focus to the max for it to be clear. You may have to actually adjust the distance of the projector slightly since you are using a projector that is not the same. I assumed that most of these were pretty universal as far as the clarity. However, it is a cheaper projector. Try moving it slightly forward or back and see if it does the sharpen your picture a bit. I had to do trail and error with the video in order to achieve the correct distance I wanted. Let me know if this helps. If not let me know and I will try to trouble shoot with you.

      Thrash, make sure your video on the USB is at least or higher than the resolution of your projector and both are the highest resolution you can get. When projecting an image, the resolution drops as the projection size gets larger and most projectors will try to fill in the image of it is lower resolution than the equipment, making for pixilation.

      I don't have a direct link for you. If you get on ebay, there are several listed, unfortunately they run from around $65-$100. I don't believe the Company (Gemmy) makes them anymore. I was lucky and found mine on a garage sale site and picked it up for about $50.00. I'm not sure why they are listed this high? Could be because it is not close to Halloween? Another option is to use a clear plastic lamp bowl with an opening like the witch head crystal ball. I found this one on ebay that would probably be close to what you need. (171150625307). Just put that number in the ebay search engine. Otherwise you could visit a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Some times they carry similar lamp bowls that can serve the same purpose as the crystal ball. Hope this helps.
