Inexpensive Reflector for Pepper's Ghost Illusion

  • The Pepper's ghost illusion has been used for many decades. It's a way to make an apparition appear in front of a live background using a sheet of glass or another transparent sheet to reflect an image. It's the same principle as seeing your own reflection in a window while still seeing what is beyond the window. Inspired by another haunter, this video provides a comparison of four different inexpensive transparent shrink wraps to see which best duplicates the quality of glass when used as a Pepper's ghost reflector.

    You know, the cling wrap is honestly perfect. You can build it to the exact size you want, and you don't have to stretch it just perfectly because you can just run a heatgun over it.
    So awesome!

    Hey! That's me! Thanks for the shout out and for the awesome comparison video!! Im gonna have to get some of the 3M now.
    And i like the tape idea! Imma have to use that method too. Im working on another Peppers Ghost effect to show subtitles.
    Did you notice? Glass and plexiglass gives you a double image reflection. But shrink wrap is super crisp with only a single reflection.

    Interesting solution. Last summer I had a 7" Android tablet backscreen die on me. "Can I turn the LCD into a Project?" I thought. The final outcome was a large home built projector that mostly worked. It needed a better Light Source but it did the trick. I think ended up dropping $60 on a cheap 1080p Projector from Amazon, and making a screen from some net curtain. The biggest issue I came across was the throw distance of the Project Vs the window I had the screen on.
    Now this provides a slightly different idea of how to accomplish a better effect without having the Projector pointed directly at the window. Thank you.
    Also gives me ideas for some of my spare 7" tablets.....

    awesome to know you can pull off a peppers ghost with a cheap material! But have to ask, in a window why use pepper ghost? why not just project onto the window itself? they literally have a setting for that in the fearfx videos and projectors are like $100 these days. The hearse idea though is cool and should be a good use.

      Hi. Projecting video directly into a transparent material results in zero image other than a glow from the projector's lens. The light goes straight through. But a transparent material will *reflect* an image from a screen of some sort or from a real object itself. Apologies if I don't understand what you are suggesting.

    • @ghostofautumnwood6379

    Can you use a projector instead of a TV?

    • @ghostofautumnwood6379
      @ghostofautumnwood6379  6 месяцев назад

      No. Think of the reflector as a mirror. If you point a projector at it, you will see the projector...or more likely just the light glow coming out of the lens. If you want to use a projector, you could make a screen out of a gauzy material, like the Hollusion material sold by Atmosfx. Although material like that isn't entirely invisible, you can see what's behind the screen. I used a Hollusion screen for this ancient portal project: ruclips.net/video/O7Q15c_P6e4/видео.html

    sorry if its a dumb question but how would the image bounce of the shrink wrap? wouldnt it just project right though?

    • @ghostofautumnwood6379
      @ghostofautumnwood6379  Год назад

      The pepper's ghost effect is based on reflections off a transparent material like glass, plexiglass or--in this case--window shrink wrap. If you look at any glass or glass-like material around you, you will see reflections as well as what's behind the material. However, if you were to point a projector directly at a sheet of glass, you might see a reflection of the projector itself but not what it is projecting. As you said, the image would pass right through. In my video, I'm holding the framed sheet of shrink wrap at roughly a 45 degree angle to a video playing on a television...like using a mirror except, in this case, some of the image is reflected and some passes through. If you were using a video projector, you would have to first point it at a screen to make the image visible and then hold your sheet of glass (or whatever) at an angle to the screen to see its reflection. For my project, I will be bouncing an image from a flat screen television.

    So I am thinking....can you use 3m film and 2 way mirror film on top instead of glass for infinity mirror effect? hmm.....btw your church last year was stupendous! 👏

    • @ghostofautumnwood6379
      @ghostofautumnwood6379  Год назад

      Geez...I doubt it. Aside from optical quality, the window shrink film is really thin and might not hold up to the process of squeegeeing when you apply the mirror film. Also, if the shrink film starts sagging, it can be tightened again by reapplying heat. Mirror film might not survive that. Glass two-way is by far the best choice but costs a fortune. It's possible a local glass shop might have some used two-way in stock--that's how I got a piece cheap. A 1/4-inch piece of glass or Plexiglass with mirror film is probably the go-to for many. Thanks regarding the church. It whipped my butt, which is why I'm going with smaller projects this year.

      All depends on what effect you're going for. Pepper's ghost is for when you want to see an object but also see what's behind it.
