I was working as a flagman in the summer of '68 on interstate 64 road construction when I stopped the first Z/28 I ever laid eyes on. I had a '57 Chevy at the time,283 solid lifter cam, a 7000 RPM screamer, my first V8 Chevy. Needless to say, I was hooked on the small block Chevy. That little engine wound up in 2 of my friends '55 Chevys and we all ran the hell out of it until it finally broke the crank. But I digress, the '67 Camaro is my favorite of all the Camaros, and I still want one even if I am 71 years old.

Can’t blame you a bit flagman. I had a SS Camaro droptop 2010 I believe first year for the convertible and the newer body style. I love the car traded it on a Z06 Corvette which I seen at cargo 180 mile an hour on the street Was even more awesome than my 454 Chevelle I bought when I was 21 I’m 73 years old now and if I could afford or could find a 67Z 28, especially with the optional dual quads in the trunk I would buy it
Great restoration. Enjoyed this! Makes me appreciate my own 67 Camaro that much more!
Hi rlovell383, Happy to read you have a FUN car too, Lou
In 1969 I also had a Gold 67 Z/28....didn't know how rare they were and sold it about 2 years later.....it is in the Z/28 registry today but original drive train replaced with a 427 with AT....sad!....I saw this car and got to talk with Jon at this event, very nice person....he let me sit in it and I thank him for letting me do so.
Hi pontiacman777986, Sounds like wonderful memories, and an opportunity to connect with the car too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Amazing! And it all started with this one. Thanks for finding & sharing this piece of Camaro history, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, "Amazing!" :-) My pleasure and you're welcome, Lou
Makes me proud to have owned a 67 Camaro even if mine was not a z-28.
Glad to read that :-)
*It's just the first Z28 off the line, no big deal I'm sure it didn't hold it's value well over the years ;)...are you kidding me?! Wow this channel is amazing never thought I'd see this car lol*
HI GuntPulp, You're FUNNY regarding the holding it's value comment. Also, THANK YOU for the kind words and your encouragement, Lou
As a lover of 67-69 camaros and a former owner of a 68 rs/ as my deepest gratitude to you for your dedication and hard work to take off an iconic piece of history. What a beautiful thing you have done.

I was drooling over the car and the story was even better!!! My Mom ordered a 1968 Rally Sport, 327/210hp Powerglide, gauge package with tic-toc-tach, black deluxe interior with houndstooth seats, (no air), black vinyl roof over a rare CORVETTE BRONZE paint... California License WPZ 787.... If ANYONE knows this car, I will buy it back, even if I have to mortgage my house!!!!! Thanks for the post!
Hi hankgs, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Moms car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Great story! I appreciate a true restoration and all the heart and effort that gets put into it! It's what really makes the car special! Very inspiring story... love that it's turned to it's gold orig.... whole thing is kinda once in a blue moon. And that sound blasted my ears thru my buds... crazy loud! Great vid, thank you!
Hi WickedFireFly13, Regarding the sound, it was SO LOUD my I was trying to cover my ears and my body was vibrating. Amazing that much power from a 302! Thank you for sharing what you see, and you're welcome, Lou
140mph sound coming out of that one!
Just the way we like it :-)
Another great Car Story!
Beautiful Camaro. Thanks Lou!
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy this story :-) Happy to share this Camaro with you. Thank you for all your support, Lou
They were fast but could handle a road course. And a high revver adding to the excitement. Makes you wonder, in retrospect, how the Z/28 Camaro for '67 and '68 - the best looking Camaros ever in my view - didn't come close to matching sales figures of the Super Sport. Oh well, if you can't have one you can always view one right here on Lou's awesome channel! Thanks man : )
Hi Bruce H., Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
YAY. You made it back there. Can't wait to see all the videos.

Amazing car Lou! Great story behind this car.
Z28 # 1, fun car to share :-)
Built to be raced. The first ones lived a particularly hard life; we’re fortunate that enough stuff survived so a few could be rescued and restored to their original glory!
Hi 88SC, Thank you for viewing and sharing a comment :-) Lou
Beautiful!
Well said :-)
What a magnificent camaro. I can't believe this is actually the very, very, very, VERY (and so on) first Z28 Camaro built in the world. Very neat, and a great engine! The sound can come to my ears for a long time now, John.
Hi John Roberts, Yes, # 1. Regarding the sound, standing next to the car when started.....the SOUND IS WAY TOO MUCH, I was vibrating, no kidding, but fun :-) Lou
Lou Costabile being with a classic car is a dream.

Hi sub4228, Glad you "love it" :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story, Lou
The nickname for that 302 engine was 'Mighty Mouse'!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on that.
Thought I saw somewhere this engine was actually making 380 hps.
@@w41duvernay I've seen even higher figures if the redline is ignored. I read that GM put these 302's on an engine stand and revved them to 8800 rpm for an hour before tearing them down for magnafluxing, rebuilding & installation. Their intent was to sell Z28's for racing & building their reputation even at a loss. The author was Smokey Yunick.
Sweet car, great story.

Hi Doug, Yes... 1st Z/28 :-) Happy to share this one with you, Lou
I thought the 302 was only one year. On the 1970 z28. Didn't know it came in earlier z28's as well. Excellent engine. High revver.
Hi Lynx Star Automotive, I'm learning on just about every car I video. I find that part of videoing and sharing the cars with you so fun :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Actually, 1970 was the first year Z28s were available without a 302, since the SCCA began allowing de-stroking that season. So the LT-1 350 replaced the 302 as the only engine available in the Z28. The rule change also allowed Chrysler to field teams for the Plymouth Barracuda and Dodge Challenger, since they could de-stroke 340s to get below the 5-liter limit. I’m late to the party here, so I apologize if this is no longer news.
No the 302 was '67-'69 only, and only available in the Camaro as RPO Z28 due to the 5 liter limit for Trans Am racing in the SCCA series. In 1970 the Z28 got the LT1 350 from the Corvette rated 10 HP less than the Vette, 360 vs 370.
great story Lou ! cool car too ! thanks for sharing

Hi Lou, I really enjoy your channel. You have some very interesting cars, and the owners and their stories are icing on the cake. May I suggest a microphone for your guest when you are shooting the car? It is difficult to hear them when you’re shooting in a noisy environment.
Hi Terry McCune, Glad you are enjoying the Channel :-) Yes, you can suggest, and if you like since we're in the season of giving, I suggest donations, like a microphone if you're interested in helping the Channel, that would be GREAT. If you prefer to enjoy the Channel with the noise in the background, that is ok too, Lou
Absolutely loved the story and history. What are the chrome handle looking things on the doors ?
Hi Chris, Happy to read you enjoy this story :-) Those are lights for the number on the door, Lou
@@loucostabile that is awesome 😎
When I was 5 years old (1979) my dad visited two brother's body shop. They were partners on a 1968 or 69 Z28 car they drag raced. I found myself captured by the looks of the car and looked all over it. One of the brothers said, go ahead and sit in it. My dad said, no don't. The owner insisted and I sat in the seat. Great memory that started my love for Camaros and cars in general.
I had a 1968 SS RS L78 396 375 hp Camaro Matador Red Black Vinyl Top 4spd I bought at an auction when I was 18 years old (1992). The engine looked original but not the right numbers on the block. Got it home and had my parts store owner run the numbers. He said I have good news and bad news. Which do you want first ? I said the bad news. He said well it's not a 396. I said I knew that, what's the good news. He said it's a 1967 427. It was the best "wrong" engine an 18 year old could have wished for. I ended up falling asleep behind the wheel and wrecked it and sold it. At 21 I purchased a 1969 Z28, brought it home and drove it around a couple weeks, then put the 302 on an engine stand and dropped that 427 in it. Had a blast for three years and my wife and I drive it the whole time we dated. I sold it just before we married in 1999. My wife had the wisdom to tell me not to sell it but I did anyway to pay off some debt. Regretted it ever since. Had several good fun cars since then but none like my 69. This winter I got old car fever again and tried to track down either if my old Camaros and ran into a dead end on both. Decided to start looking and found a 1969 DZ 302 Phathom Green White Stripes Jerry MacNeish certified Camaro this past weekend. Made a deal on it Monday and just waiting on delivery. I am over the moon excited and so is my wife. Been watching videos in the meantime and this story is outstanding. Thanks for the quick response and good content 🙂
Chris
Love it. Hole story.
Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Thank you, Lou
Fine people ! Cool story ! :)
Hi gerard cousineau, Glad you like the people and the story :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Awesome car & story. Just curious, what is that loud horrendous sound in the background about 2/3rd's of the way through the video? LOL. Sounds like some major machining of some sort taking place. ???????
Hi Howaboutthetruth, When I video at a "live" drive in day @ a car show, your audio can suffer, so we did what we can, with what we have in the time we had and this is the result. What you don't see if there was a semi idling FOREVER and we had to wait for that to shut off to get this video going, Oh well, glad you like the "Awesome car & story :-) Lou
@@loucostabile No complaints here, I just couldn't quite identify what that sound was through my headphones. ( I like using headphones to truly appreciate the sound of high performance V8 engines. ) Thanks for your response Lou & take care!
My dream car!!! I don't need the first one ever I'd take number 2
Hi brian smith, Glad you enjoy this "dream car" :-) Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
Fantastic. I actually thought 67-68 were only Super Sport or Rally Sport
Hi Captain FALKEN, I love the learning from the Care Takers from the cars I share with you. They have so much knowledge. Glad you thought this one is "fantastic" :-) Lou
Actually the Z28 package was just an RPO, regular production option, from Chevy back then, like the RS or SS options. It, if I'm not mistaken, was called he "Special Performance" package and had the 302/290 engine, F41 sport suspension, power disc brakes, the stripes and a few other items. In '67 there was no exterior badging at all, except the stripes and 602 were built. In '68 the option package was the same and front and rear spoilers were also added as an option. Early '68 Z/28s "302" emblems were mounted on the front fenders, as a way of showing it was a Z/28, later on during the model year the "Z/28" emblems were added and I believe 7,199 were built. 1969 had the "Z/28" emblems front, rear and sides with the same performance package and somewhere over 20,000 were built due to the long production run that model year.
An amazing find for sure....I am trying to remember what chevy engine parts were combined to make the "302"....
Hi Kramden, Glad you enjoyed this 1st one :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
The 302 came to be by placing the 283 crank in a 4.000 bore block. Very easy to piece together, but balancing was tricky. Me and my dad put together a couple as a kid in the 90's
327 block and 283 crankshaft.. 3inch stroke and 4 inch bore. In 1969, the 302 received it's own block, DZ ID. much strong crank/large main journals and more refined...engine overall.
Early Z/28s had the 2 bolt main 327 blocks. it wasn't until midway through the '68 model year they got a 4 bolt main block that carried over into the '69 model year. All the parts for the 302 came off the shelf at Chevrolet so it was easy to build these with no special parts neede.
A 327 block and a 283 crank.
That 302 sounds nasty just like a Big Block
Hi jojo DaCosta, When I was standing next to the car and he started it my body was vibrating from the sound :-) Crazy LOUD. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Lou Costabile Thanks for sharing it and keep them coming. You should try and look for a Buick Road Hawk there very rare also. Have a happy thanksgiving to you and your family.
They sure do. The 1970 LT1 350 had a really nasty idle as well for a small block...in fact the LT1 made more horsepower than the 396/402 big block did that year. But the big block made a little more torque
Did you hear that Lou. LOL
Yes I did :-)
Nice car,; I've got #181
Happy to read you have a fun car too
The Street Version of These Were REAL SLEEPERS,NO Markings of Z/28 on 67' s ,Surprised A Lot of Big Blocks ,Red Lite to Red Lite !!LOL

Another big $
Hi Paul T McNulty, Curious. Are you a Banker or Investor? You like to comment on car value, however I'm sure you've noticed I'm interested in the person, the story, the car, and I don't discuss values or sales prices. So here is my question for you. Do you like this 1st production Z28? And yes or no, why? Lou
Lou Costabile yea I like it just curious what they went for
This car came from Alexandria Virginia. WTF. I just drove around there last night.
What a coincidence!
lost mom along the way.. wow. if someone says: 302 mavericks etc different Fords immediately come to mind. 4L-4P designations.. A lot of info here. yenko created a pretty awesome corvair, as well. z28, huh.
Hi Scott, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou

Great story and history
Is there a service or ability to research say his first car / 69 z vin number / our first car- to see if it still is registered somewhere; and if people have been successful in finding and buying their first car?
Great video with a lot of information.
An example of an ideal owner to put forth the time, energy, research, passion and expense to recapture the history and integrity of the initial race spec z
Imagine racing that set up back in the day-
Curious if the owner and Mr .Moore, driver, or original owner ever met, or have seen this build in person?
And a 69 z28 as a first car in the 70's was a hot, desired muscle car that
always!! turned heads
Maybe more actual drives in featured cars in 2018 with owners and cars that are not in show settings/ location....
maybe some back seat, over the shoulder tripod rig, or ?
Hi Finn Blu, Glad you enjoyed the history :-) Me too, so much fun to learn. Thank you for sharing, and adding to the story, Lou
