      This particular model and year was always my favorite, as far as looks go. I appreciate Tim improving on the original design without going too crazy.
      I never knew these models had bad steering and bad brakes, and unibody issues. It was always out of my price range, but If I had money to burn, this would the car I'd pick.
      I wonder how much Tim has invested in this, in my head, the ultimate muscle car. $300,000?

      @@mu99ins When I first watched the interview, I stopped the play to see what made this Camero stand out so much. What I noticed was that it is absolutely the "Cleanest" Camero I can remember... ever, minimum trim, perfect fit & finish. Everything is just right! Tim did a spectacular job on it, even if the best part was choosing a really good builder!

    This is what I believe a resto-mod should be. Subtle period correct changes and tastefully modernize the driving experience without taking away the character of the vehicle. Probably the best '68 Camaro in the world today.

    • @stratplayr6997
      @stratplayr6997 5 лет назад +24

      @Jar of Smegma I think he's referring to "character" in the sense of the vehicle's design and aesthetic details. Too many restomods have digital dashes, wheels and interior parts from modern cars. This one looks like a regular '68 from the outside, and the interior also looks like factory spec (except for the large gauges - but they still look appropriate) - this car is very tastefully done!

      @port nut If that car were in a showroom today , it would not look out of place (assuming the bumpers would pass a crash test) as far as the styling. Emissions might be an issue too. The safety equipment... would be frowned upon.
      Boy, the government has sure ruined cars and ruined drivers too. There is so much equipment helping bad drivers , they don't need to learn how to drive.

      @noble mc Custom American cars are used to be one of a major car culture in Japan around 90’s - 00’s but after the gas price went through the roof, it declined. When I had 91’ Firebird GTA around 01’ - 03’, we could still see lots of F bodies, Corvettes, Astros, Caprice sdn/wgn etc were around. But now you can hardly find these kinds in the streets. However, there are some enthusiasts who love American muscle cars of 60’s & 70’s exist. Btw, we don’t even see many JDM sports cars either and it seems that young generations like iPhones over cars.

    No, Tim just realized how easy it would be to put the passenger side rear fender into one of those parked cars... I made the same face with my 450hp '71 Z28 with a 4 speed manual driving down a narrow street with cars parked on both sides... you forget sometimes how easy it is to hang the rearend out instantly....and how easy disaster can strike when you apply just a tiny bit too much throttle. Remember , Tim said it was the SECOND time he had been in the car. Tim , you have one of the coolest Camaros I have ever laid eyes on. You could not have made it better. Steve McQueen would have loved it.

      Projecting. No one knows exactly what he was actually feeling and thinking at that moment besides Tim, even if you imagine you've made an identical face in an identical situation. That still doesn't mean what was going on in his head was identical to what was going on in your head. That's called projecting. You could be totally right, or you could be wrong. I don't know. What I do know is that you're projecting and acting like there's no other answer besides how *you* felt in that moment. That's not a good mindset to have. The intellectually honest answer is "I don't know, but this is what I *think is likely.*"

    • @doug.ritson
      @doug.ritson 6 лет назад +1

      jawn1977jaws. Totally agree. Notice that they show the burnout a couple times and that face he made was exactly when the car started to twist sideways, and he was headed down the street toward cars parked on either side.. Yeah, I'd want to check my undies after that. 3 way tie in my book for the best looking car of all time - '57 Chevy, 68 Camaro, 70 Mach 1. Man if I ever win the Lotto - I'll have 2 of each.

    OMG.!!!!! Be-a-utiful.!!!!!!!
    In 1967 and 1968, Yenko was dropping 427 cubic-inch monsters from Corvettes into Camaro bodies and creating some of the most powerful Camaros of the era. One of Yenko’s crowning achievements came in 1969 when Yenko was tired of selling Camaros with limited warranties because of his modifications and convinced Chevy to add a 427-equipped Camaro to its special equipment ordering system, known as COPO (central office production order).
    This addition of the 427-equipped Camaro to COPO made it possible for Yenko to sell these cars with the GM-standard 5-year or 50,000-mile warranty. Yenko ordered a grand total of 198 of the Camaro 427s available from COPO. The total number of COPO Camaros produced and sold is unknown, but has been rumored as anywhere from 500 to 1,000.
    With exception of the 427 jammed into the engine compartment, the Camaro 427s came from COPO with almost nothing identifying them as a special model; they even came with the old dog dish hubcaps on steel wheels. Yenko made sure to order his from COPO with 15-inch rally wheels, a front stabilizer bar, and a 140 mph speedometer. The rest of the customization was all Yenko’s doing.

    I saw this Camero and it brought tears to my eyes. My sister had a ‘68 the same color, but with a white stripe around the front end and down the side. 327, 3 speed. It had been her boyfriend’s before he went to Vietnam. She took over the payments when he was drafted. Unfortunately, she lost control of it during an ice storm and it was a basket case after that. Thank God she wasn’t hurt. We were 4 years and 1 day apart in age, she being born on April 3rd, 1952 and me on April 4th, 1956. She passed away in 2017 of cancer, leaving a huge void in my life and a bigger hole in my heart.

      I always thought the 67-68 Camaro's were the best looking but 69 was definitely the best year for Camaro's overall. The all aluminum 12:1 compression ZL-1 427 race ready big block was put into 69 base model Camaro's that year. It also ended up in 2 or 3 Corvette's. The ZL-1 was the baddest big block that Chevy ever made and it was only produced that one year. It was even more powerful than a 1970 LS6 454 and just as powerful as an L-88 427...if not more powerful than that too. Plus it only weighed as much as a 327 Chevy small block in spite of being 427 cubic inches because of its all aluminum construction. Also in 1969 Chevy engineers began using 4 bolt main blocks for their 302 small block that came in the Z28 Camaro. In 1967 and 68 the DZ 302 only had 2 bolt mains so the 1969 version of it was definitely much improved as far as durability. Those little Chevy 302's were really screamers and made awesome power for such a small displacement V8 like the Ford K-Code 289 and BOSS 302 small blocks. Some engine builders like Smokey Yunick were able to get 400 plus horsepower out of them. I really like the 70 1/2 Z28 a lot too but the 69 is definitely my favorite Z. The LT1 350 that came in the 70 1/2 Z was also a really mean solid lifter small block just like the 302 had been. Those two engines both had an awesome sound

    • @jeremythompson9122
      @jeremythompson9122 4 года назад

      @@kristoffersparegodt420 70 1/2 is the last year Camaro that I really like. I mean besides the modern ones...the SS, Z28, and ZL-1. Starting in 1971 they all started getting low compression smog engines that weren't nearly as powerful because of all the new federal emissions regulations. They really went downhill badly as far as power starting in 1973 or 74 It wasn't until the early 90's that the Z28's started actually having some real performance again. The IROC Camaro's made pretty decent power for something from the 80's but I've always hated the 1982-92 Camaro/Firebird body style. Plus the IROC was only available with an automatic transmission which guarantees that I would have bought a Mustang 5.0-5 speed instead. The 80's Z28's had an available 5 speed but the 305 that came in those was pretty weak to say the least and the 350 only came in the IROC

      Chandler Mott that was the best thing I’ve ever heard “we don’t talk about the c4” that made me literally laugh out loud

      @@bugsterboigaming1242 haha, glad it made ya laugh, but dead serious I hate c4's. DISGUSTING. I see videos or articles listing "Top 10 cars for under $$$" and the c4 is on all of the lists... ugliest car I've ever seen and I would pay to not to own one, chevy should be embarrassed by the 80s to be honest

    Thanks for sharing this fantastic car with everyone. So clean, and beautifully old school modern. Nicely done Tim.

    THE FIRST 427 COPO (Central Office Production Order) CAR IN THE WORLD WAS BUILT IN HAWAII IN 1965. Yenko Chevrolet and other dealerships started production of the COPO 396 and 427 Camaro in 1967. At this time, I worked for a Chevrolet/Toyota dealer in Hawaii. Through the support of the owner and GM, I built a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air, 2 Door Sedan, with bucket seats, console, and button puff custom interior. In September 1965, the first shipment of new 1966 cars arrived. I took the Chevrolet Caprice home and installed the complete Turbo-Jet 427/425HP engine, M22 Transmission, Drive Shaft, HD Radiator, Starter, Alternator, Clutching Fan,Transistorized Ignition and a Chevelle 12 bolt 4:88 Rear End. Additionally, I installed Headers and four Corvette off-road exhaust side-pipes, under the car, exiting in front of the rear tires.
    In 1967 before the 20 COPO L-88 Corvettes came out, I replaced my engine with one of the very first L-88 427/430 HP engines that GM sent to me in the crate. This was a complete engine, including intake manifold with distributor to the oil pan. This engine included aluminum heads and several months later I received another L-88 engine with the open chamber cylinder heads. We sold one 1968 L-88 427/430 HP Corvette silver/black and just before l969 GM sent me the first very rare ZL1 427 all aluminum engine because our dealer sold a lot of high performance cars. The last engine I received was the 510 and 576 all aluminum which was installed in my in my 1955 Chevy, 1967 Corvette and 1969 Camaro SS/RS with the first available year with the Cowl Induction Hood.
    My car was built for show and go and driven everyday to work. Back in the 1960's the A/Gas Champ, Johnny Loper's Anglia, "Lil Hoss" ran 10.21 et. My car ran 9.60 and could have done better, but I did not want to alter my fenders for the larger tires needed. I ordered over two dozen 427/425HP, L-88/427's, ZL1/427's, 510's, LS6/454s and even some 576's to install in Nova's Camaro's Chevelle's, GTO's, an A'Gas Anglia, Willy's and even a Mustang. Motion, Baldwin Chevrolet stated 10.5 seconds or return the car! Read about the new Dodge Challenger Hellcat Hemi 707HP..11.2et..C/Gas back in 1960s. The Chrysler and Ford Hemi's were called Ground Shakers. My car sounded like an Earthquake. I got 133 traffic tickets in one year for "loud noise". Today, I have one of my special 576 aluminum engines in a 1978 black Chevy Half Ton Pick-Up that runs 8.50 seconds!! Mahalo and Aloha!!!

      Stephen Abe Is it a step side or a fleetside? I almost bought a 454 step side but the title was compromised. Always preferred the looks. Hard to find,even in truck country.

      This fleetside truck has under 3,000 miles, custom black paint, upholstery and very fast.

      Awesome info. Didn't know they made engine with that many cubes back then. I have a 1968 with a 489. Favorite car is the 1968-72 nova. The hellcat is so over rated and way overpriced.

    I like the fact that Tim refrained from putting a cowl induction hood on it(which wasn't available until the '69 Camaros were released) like everybody seems to on early Camaros. '67-'68s are my favorite Camaros(followed by '70 1/2-'73s). the flares are nicely done(looks a little gen 2 Camaro at certain angles, especially the wheel openings IMO). Superb Camaro!

    Wow. I never knew this video existed. Tim Allen the guy in all my childhood movies and awesome guy and Jay freaking Leno the guy I stayed up late to watch every night. With a COPO camaro restomod. This channel is the gift that keeps on giving. Where else are you gonna see this duo talking about something you love. Not as two celebrities bragging but two car guys having a chat.

    This was a great episode. Jay Leno and Tim Allen, a good comedic pairing I think.

      +FreakinPeanuts, Tim was just acting silly.. He's done that many times, and a lot more than just a burn out.. He's been racing for many years, drag racing, but mostly like endurance racing, I use to watch him every year in Florida, with his Mustang at the "Twelve Hours of Sebring", and The Daytona 24 Hours race, and i'v talked with him many times.. He's a great guy.
