A description of how to replace the timing belt on a ford mondeo mk5 2litre diesel without the correct timing tools.
THE LINK BELOW IS TO A VIDEO SHOWING WHERE THE CRANKSHAFT TIMING PIN HOLE IS LOCATED
• Finally found the timi... - Авто/Мото
Just did my timingbelt, could not have done it without this video, not that much drama, only used 8 hr, first time doing it myself.
No Fa--ying about straight to the point demonstration ,all you need to know in one video.10/10
cheers😜
Love watching you Alan as you explain things in a very humorous way but with loads of common sense to 👍🏻
thank you
Easier to understand than I expected.. I have similar work to do on a newly acquired Mondeo. courtesy of previous owner not keeping service records .. this video explains what I`m going to expect when I start my project. Thankyou Alan
First time I saw a real timing belt replacement on a live engine. Thanks for posting!
Cheers for the videos Alan. I'm an ex mechanic now driving a taxi. Mk4 Mondeo 2.0tdci. Been a long time since I worked in a garage so love your videos just to keep me up to date with the new stuff.
Keep the videos coming mate. Great stuff.
Derek .
cheers
Great tip's Alan, I'm doing a belt tomorrow on a Mk5 2.0 TDI, this was like a refresher course for me.
Your video helped me big time, especially the trick with the hit gun... It was indeed as you said: No drama.
Thank you, sir!
I changed the said CS pulley on the Peugeot 406 - I attached a ratchet spanner to the bolt and turned the engine by hand until the handle of the ratchet rested against the subframe. Then turn the engine over with the key. This undoes the bolt pretty quickly and easily. Probably not the best method but it worked!
Your videos are superb I don’t know if you read any comments that often but the sheer detail and tips in these are great.
That tip about heating up the crank shaft pulley bolt that is one to remember I can imagine someone who didn’t know about that coming across a few problems
hi, thanks for your comment, yes i do read them all and well appreciated
alan howatt 👍🏻
hi Alan with your knowledge you're a very good car mechanic teacher for would be mechanics , thanks for your video,s ,
Thanks so much Alan keep up the good work.
Top video mate. Luckily i have at least another 2 years before anyone wants a timing belt doing on one of these...
Brilliant , u so deserve more subs Allan , good job ..
Top work as always Alan. Good job 👍
Another great video Alan. I'm not a mechanic but it gives me a better understanding of what is involved in changing my timing belt (going in tomorrow). I thought it was a straight forward job I obviously haven't got a clue. I don't mind paying them £340 now after watching this. If I was FORD I would be employing Alan as an advisor but they are knobheads who just wouldn't listen.
lol
Great job Alan, watched Your 2 videos on this and went on this one, first time to do mk5 today and everything You showed was 100% Thank You very much, will have to repay You some day, that is invaluable content💯🙏🙏👍👌😎
thanks pat, glad you got it sorted
@@alan4x 🙏👍😎
Great video really enjoying watching them. Really informative and down to earth talk too lol
Cheers for this Buddy - I will be doing mine today.
Great vid. We spend 5 hours but we did it with this video ! Great stuff
lol, i sure my first one took about 5 hours as well
Brilliant video very helpful
Good video, regards Poland city Włocławek :),good jobs :).
thank you
Brilliant video Alan!
Glad you’re alive man, long time no see.
hi thanks, well i do live in britain lol
Another great video well done
TAHANKIOU ALAN
Superb job Alan 😃👍🏻
I have 2.0 TDCI 132 kW. After cambelt change came P0014 fault. After faults reset, fault P0014 came after first start. Cold start was OK, but warm starts - in 50% there was 5-10 seconds of starting. It was really annoying. With free version of Forscan I made reset learned values of camshaft position sensor. And now, so far, so good, no fault and warm starts are all easy.
Great video cheers
Some acetone on a q-tip or rag does a great job on loctite in bolt holes.
Top man, good job, nice and clean
Alan love you videos very informative and enjoy your humour and thanks for you help
cheers
Hi. Great video. Just two questions. 1. Is the fuel pump driven by the timing belt? 2. Where exactly on the engine are the two holes where you mark the timing with the pen. Thank you.
ruclips.net/video/toKv2yUoU6Y/видео.html this video is more up to date, the fuel pump is driven by the end of the exhaust camshaft, this video shows clearly the holes for the timing pins
@@alan4x Excellent. Thanks for your prompt reply.

BTW - blame Ford for the mega thread lock. They built the engines at Dagenham in a sharing arrangement with PSA.
Thank you Alan for your videos. I'm not a car mechanic but when I watch your videos everything seems to be so easy to fix :) and those are so much helpful when trying to find a problem (like leaking thermostat). Hope to meet to you some day when I visit GB. I like very much your videos "on the car" (I can imagine they're hard to record) because I can see the correct path how to get out/in the part that I want to replace. Thanks! My questions is about that crank bolt: I heard from someone that gunning the crank bolt with the hot air is a little bit risky because it can damage the oil seal (sealant) somewhere behind that crankshaft sprocket (I've never seen that, but I assume that there is one behind there). What is you experience with that, you did it so many times? Was there any leaking from the area of crankshaft sprocket?
hi rob, thanks for your comment, yes it would be great to meet you if your ever passing this way, as for your question, i have heated up many of these crank bolts for 5-6 minutes and never had i had any crank seals leak oil so do not worry at all, it will be fine,, also i updated that cam belt change video as i had an engine out of the car and i found the crank locking pin location so this new video is much better, all the best, alan.
ruclips.net/video/toKv2yUoU6Y/видео.html
@@alan4x Thank you for your response, I'm more comfortable to do it now. Yes, I've seen that video too, (actually I've seen all about Mk5 :-) ), those two videos complement each other, nice.
great video , it helped ALOT.... after doing cambelt change on 2011 , 2.0 diesel, i definately set the cambelt tensioner with the pointer in the middle of the slot , but after rotating the engine i noticed the pointer has moved ,. is this normal. ?
engine runs fine..
yes the needle will fluctuate a bit...as long as its not significantly out it will be ok
Great job 👏
The garage where I had my mk 4 cambelt changed sheared the crankshaft bolt and didn't know what to do, they were talking about a new crank, so I found a local engineering company and shipped the car to them and they were able to remove the rest of the bolt
Nice job👍
Bravo 👍
How many cesius is the air coming out of the heaters i have up to 800 celsius how much time i need to heat.
Sorry for my English
Great video
Hi Alan. Great video guides. Do any of your vids go over aux belt replacement. I have 2012 galaxy 2.0d.
Top video...
Hi Alan tackled my belt today all is aligned except the marking on the flywheel do I push the flywheel back to the markings with the belt detentioned? Many thanks
I have a much better video for the cam belt .. .ruclips.net/video/toKv2yUoU6Y/видео.htmlsi=LlpwKAb6QDFNiXfw
Enjoyed that ,ty
Great video allan i ve got a mondeo 2009 just bought and the history book is a bit dodgy.taking off the driver wheel and the Inner wheel liner, will i be able to see if the cambelt has really been changed?
Thank you
I have a question. I set the crank sprocket to the left hand side like your instructions and sent the tension in-between the cutout with the marker in the middle. When I have turned the engine round twice the bottom crank sprocket is no where near the middle were it was set too is that normal? Thanks
hi, use this video instead...it is much clearer and it shows where the crank pin goes ruclips.net/video/toKv2yUoU6Y/видео.html
Fantastic fantastic
I use the crank timing pin from the 1.9 2.0 peugout lumps fits straight up behind the starter
The bottom half of the engine is pug so it's no different
I wonder if a 1.6tdi MK4 is the same
Hi, should'nt have also blocked the high pressure pump...i know it's not necessary on these hdi's but as safety measure...good job though😎
Good afternoon Alan. Hope all is well with you. I just have a question regarding my mk5 Mondeo 2 L diesel 180 auto.
My question relates to the crank pulley and making a noise. I’ve been told it could have something to the dampener on it. I just wondered if you have had this problem and if so how easy to resolve my car has done 230,000 so only just run it in! it is a taxi after all.
One other issue. I also have is when I’m driving on the motorway for instance and have it on cruise control anything above 60 mph each and all the sudden rev to 3 1/2 thousand 2 or 3 times but once it’s done that, it’s fine after that Any ideas Thanks for any information you can give me Chris.
not had any crank pulley issues at all but have had many alternator pulleys seize up and cause the alternator belt to flap about causing a strange noise, as for your other problem i dont know, not something i have come across
@@alan4x thank you for that information and all the best,I find all your videos very informative 👍
Have you a video on how to change aux belt on mark 4 mondeo?
Good, job, im a full qualified mechanic, and even i really like watching ur videos. My personal car is a mk4 mondeo, and its interesting watching ur videos. Any idea if u are going to do a mk4 2lt diesal timing belt? . I need to do mine soon
He already has one look back in his video history, its near identical due to the same engine.
hi...ruclips.net/video/OWkTJToMW1M/видео.html
I did see this one, u guys must have a sightly different motor over there. Its probably going to be the same ish. We in Australia have the TDCI diesal, and some things look different
hi alan I have a mk5 2 litre diesel it vibrates at 50mph in sixth gear 30 in fourth if I gently try to increase speed under fifteen hundred rpm any clues
it is not uncommon for the driveshaft joints to get worn and cause vibration when accelerating in higher gears but if your car is around 100k miles mark i would check the duel mass flywheel as that can cause vibration issues
Long as the crank has a keyway and doesnt float I never bother with a timing pin. Mark it tippex job done.
Is the pin now available to buy
Hi Alan. Can you advise me ? If i only want to change crankshaft pulley do i need to block camshaft sprocket with the pin ? Or i can just unscrew it ?
hey Alan I have same color ford mondeo as you, 2.0 tdci sedan automatic gear 2015, I have some kind of find noize when I start my car and a oily smell to it, do you know what it can be and what needs to be changed? it has run 130,000 km,
tippex is the universal timing tool
Brilliant Alan, another great video. I have changed a few cam belts but I am really a Tractor and Plant mechanic. My question is that our (The Wife and I) Mk5 has overhead camshaft. But is there 2 Cams? I'm sure I can see a little chain in the filler cap hole? Does this chain need changed or serviced? Is there any differences for the Auto/Power shift version? Looking forward to reading your reply. Bob Laird.
hi, yes there are two camshafts, the exhaust camshaft is attached to the timing belt pulley and the inlet camshaft via a chain in the cylinder head...as long as you give your engine the correct oil changes that chain should last the life of the engine and give you no trouble.
we have no auto boxes so not sure if they are the same but i would image the only difference would be the positioning of the crankshaft timing pin location...i have been unable to obtain a timing pin for the crank anyway so i use paint marks on the flywheel teeth which also saves a lot of time as getting to the crank timing pin hole requires removing the starter motor but i don't have a pin anyway lol
Hi Alan Thank you for the video. Before you removed the crank bolt, did you remove the bolt that locks the camshaft? If the crankshaft moves a little whilst gunning the crank bolt out, is there a risk of bending or breaking the camshaft if the cam locking bolt is not removed?
hi, yes i did remove the camshaft locking bolt before i gunned the crank bolt out.
i doubt very much you can do any damage leaving the camshaft locking bolt in place but i prefer to remove it and when the crank and camshaft do move a little when gunning the crank bolt i just turn them back and refit the locking pin after the crank bolt is out
This motor is the same Ford S-Max and Ford Galaxy?. TDCI 2.0, 140CV?
Always wanted to know where the Reluctor ring was on the mondeo. we had our timing belt changed a while ago and the garage stripped the ring cause the the car not to start again. 4 days later they were still scratching there heads as to why is wasn't starting. We had to send the car off to another garage to get the car finished and working. what a drama though!
sounds like who ever changed your timing belt should not have been touching it
The Volvo manual says never touch the outer ring of rubber magnets they are very fragile..
This is engine number t7.. or t8.. ?
Can you make a video where you explane how to change the timing belt at ford bmax 1.5?
sorry we do not have any of those cars or engines
This did NOT cure my insomnia. Why do I enjoy your videos so much? F̶o̶r̶d̶ Peugeot have dispensed with that electronic SEEMS gizmo for measuring belt tension then? What to do if you cant/wont get one? Forums say tighten then see how far the belt twists at its mid point and repeat as necessary (I forget how much twist is deemed the "correct" amount). A bit of a bodge but my pug 406 has done 200k, is on its third belt and owes me nothing, so not as big a deal if it were a 3 yr old Mk 5 Mondeo. But the Mondeo tensioner has a tension indicator so you can't go wrong. What happens if you crank twice and the marks are off?
Great excellent video my friend! Quick question , how many kilometers you have to change the timing belt ? I think 100.000 km ? Please respond my friend!
the interval is 125k miles..200k kilometres but to be safe i would change the belt at 100k miles..160k km
@@alan4x you are the best Alan ! Thank you !
Дякую!!
Afternoon Alan, I have a mk2 ford s-max, same engine as this, its on 112k now and I'm wanting YOU to replace my timing belt kit and water pump, I'm a time served mechanic myself but don't have the facilities or time to do it myself. Do you have a contact number I can contact you on to arrange a price and date?
Thanks
Carl
Hi, at 13:19 what if the lines don't match up at this point?
Hi Allan i have the mk4 mondeo with the 2litre engine and i was going to do it myself following your vid and it will be the first one i would of done but after watching this mk5 which looks like the similar procedure im having second thoughts is the mk4 as easy as you make it looking or could i come into some trouble.
as long as you have a good air or battery gun to undo the crank pulley bolt...it also may be worth heating that crank bolt before undoing it as it will come out easier, you should be ok, but if your not sure then probably best to have someone around to help
the gun i have is the big dewalt dcf899 so i will heat the bolt up first to help in removal also when its time to reinstall the crank pulley instead of taking the starter motor off to lock the ring gear (i would have to buy this tool) could i put the car in gear have some one press on the brakes or use a screwdriver in the vented disc to re torque the pulley back up to 70nm + 60 degrees
Where do the old timing belt and the water pump belong?
in the trash can lol
Don’t worry Alan you won’t have to do this after the mondeo is going to be fitted with the all new ford ecoblue tdci made by ford ... so no more peugeot ... the 2.0 diesel that is in the 2018 transit custom ... it has a wet belt AGAIN !!!! LOL
omg lol
First class video. What’s the service limit on those belts thanks.
hi, they are 125k miles but the water pumps quite often leak before that... i change them at 100k miles
Thanks for that Alan sound advice 👍
Hi I have ford Mondeo diesel 2.L 2012 change the timing belt I watch your videos but that was 2014 I want know if 2012 & 2014 the same that will be great . Thanks
yes a 2012 will be the same as a 2014 2l diesel
What cause this oil leak in 4:58
Thanks
This guy has a comical persona esp with that accent, maybe it's natural or intentional but good to watch and learn from non the less 😂
My belts just grenades after an emergency stop at 30 mph. Belt was only on 11k! Gates belt. Tensioner was exactly where it was meant to be and everything else looks fine. New pump and tensioner when the belt was fitted. Strangest crap ever!
Are you the only mechanic in that garage?
plastic sump whatever next no doubt a cost cutting exercise you cannot beat aluminium
😀
Good video but do you not use torque settings to do up the bolts??
hi...no i tighten the crank bolt with an air gun nice and tight....if i were to buy a new crank bolt there is so much thread lock on it i don't think a torque setting would be accurate anyway...so just whack it up with air gun
I had the same problem undoing a MK4 2.0 crank bolt.. lots of thread lock bound up the threads about 10mm out. Had a 1m pry bar on it and got to the point where I thought I was going to snap the bolt.
I ended up using penetrating fluid to weaken the thread lock bond and went back and forth & got it out.
I used a new crank bolt from Ford (as these are stretch bolts) which comes with a 'dry' thread lock on the bolt. Torqued up to correct setting then rotate another 60 degrees to stretch.
Was much easier to install new bolt than it was to undo the old one.
Great videos by the way!
Do you know if this is the same diesel engine used in a 2011 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi DW engine?
no, as far as i know these engines came out in 2015 with the mondeo
And I spent loads more getting a MK5 because I was told it's a chain engine. Sick or what
Mark Email 2
How much to do mine ?
Do also 1.8 Tdci(transit connect) self bleed ?
yes it would be vary rare to get an air lock in a 1.8 tdci..just run it up with the pressure cap off until the thermostat opens
hi allan just a quick question, ive just changed the belt on mk4 2.0 diesel tdci and for the life of me i cant get the bottom belt cover to sit back on, ive been wrestling with it for over an hour and a half , im raging!!!! everythings went great and now this i cant understand it, any ideas that could help, many thanks
hi.... have you seen the video for that mk4 2l timing belt......ruclips.net/video/OWkTJToMW1M/видео.html never had trouble putting the lower cover back on so unless something is not on right or the cover is warped i don't know
@@alan4x hi yes thanks allan i have watched it and as i say no prblems anywhere apart from getting this cover back on, it was diffficult to wiggle it out originally . ill have another go tommorow its raining here now and im demented with it, mmany thanks for all your help and great content
@@alan4x it seems to be fouling on the fan belt tensioner?
There's a peugeot and citroen logo in 2:54. Is this engine designed by PSA?
yes it is
And has been since at least 2004...
The problem I have is if the flywheel / crank has moved and how to rest the engines timing.
hi, you can't get the camshaft timing wrong..it is pinned....if you tighten the crank bolt and your flywheel paint marks do not line up again with the cam sprocket pin then you loosen the crank bolt ...refit the cam sprocket pin and realign the flywheel paint marks..tighten the crank bolt again, turn engine over 2 revolutions and see if it all aligns
@@alan4x Hi and thanks for reply. Issue I have is that the car has an automatic gearbox and did not lock the flywheel. So the Crank and the camshaft are now out of sink.
My thought is to lock camshaft again and try and turn the crank until I can hopefully try and find the location pin hole. Other than that think I am in deep dook. ;) When i was trying to remove crank bolt I felt the belt skip several times.
@@alan4x Is there only one timing hole for the pin on the flywheel? If that was the case I could hopefully turn crank until it ligned up.
hi, i have not worked on any automatics so not sure here but with the manual gearbox you have to unbolt the starter motor...there is a plug behind the starter you then remove to access the flywheel timing pin hole although i have not found anyone yet to supply the correct timing pin
@@alan4x Hi Alan. Have managed to get 8mm pin in the locating hole on flywheel the small hole which I hope is top dead centre. realigned the camshaft with 8mm pin and put back together. Car turns over but will not start. Is it possible that the camshaft could be 180 degrees out on this engine or would the valves just clatter. Not sure if it has any clearance on this engine at all. Clutching at straws now and you advice is much appreciated.
Where are you Based and how much do you Charge for this Mines on 104K
Alconbury
PSA continues to supply its engines to Ford. When these motors start giving problems , you're in big trouble.
