    Love your videos. I would like to share something. I have a real water problem. In April, it is normal to have to pump 1700 US gallons of water in a single day (snow melt). I use a sewage/ effluent pump because it was high capacity instead of a standard sump pump. This means the pump gets plenty of time to cool before it goes on again (avoid overheating). I do not use a backup pump because I cannot depend on a battery operated Chinese low capacity pump. Instead I bought a marine inverter and have 2 marine batteries connected to the inverter. The inverter will provide 110V for the sewage pump when the power goes out. If I am concerned that 2 batteries are insufficient, I can buy more batteries. I do not have a standard black bucket from the hardware store. I use a 50 gallon drum and when my pump goes on, it evacuates about 110 litres (almost 30 US gallons).

      @flyhound97 These are alternative forms of the past tense and past participle of the verb learn. Both are acceptable, but learned is often used in both British English and American English, while learnt is much more common in British English than in American English. We learned the news at about three o'clock.

    Actually, the backup and the main pump run off a extended run time once the bottom float lowers, so that was why the backup was still running. And they are actually adjustable, they have a tie(backup uses a white plastic one, and the main float uses a steel one) which can be unscrewed and then you can adjust it.

    I noticed that, during your test run of the primary pump, it rocked noticeably in the pit at startup. Additionally, wasn't there a strong twisting torque when the pump surged into action? I fear that the pump might destroy the outflow pipe or separate the joint of the outflow pipe and the rubber union sleeve. Isn't the only resistance to the sudden torque the plastic pipe? Or, does water in the tank somehow absorb the torque and reduce the vibration? Otherwise, the pump would need to be secured to the walls of the well.

    The "basement watch dog emergency"was what was covered up on the yellow unit for whatever reason. I had one of these units. Never had to see if the battery worked or not. Failed after about five years. The only thing I think I would add would be to bundle and wire tie the wires from the bottom up and then to the pipe for a nice clean look.

      "was covered up on the yellow unit for whatever reason"
      One reason could be why endorse any product for free? There is quite a viewership here and if they want their products to appear in these videos, they should pay. OR, maybe the maker of these videos doesn't want to endorse ANY product because, if the product is crap, it could reflect badly on him. The value in these videos isn't so much the brand of products he uses.

    Outstanding presentation and advice, again. Thanks Shannon.
    Just not super keen on that battery in the house though - "sealed non-spillable" doesn't mean they don't off-gas hydrogen. KA-BOOM. Even in the plastic box (which will likely shatter anyhow) it will make you some deaf and spray acid everywhere, which is OK if you are leaving your basement all unfinished.
    Same for these wankers that load up the inside of their RV's with them because they are super enviro solar. There is a reason the factory sets up any rig with the batteries in an outside compartment

      Especially if the water level in the battery goes down. Had that problem with a UPS I built with deep cycle batteries. I forgot to put water in them, they dried up. When I added water and tried charging them, they started smelling bad like rotten eggs. Not good. Fortunately, I disconnected them before anything bad happened (they were in the bedroom). I will have to move them someplace safer if I use them again.

    Great video and thanks. I'm following your sump pail install video this week.
    You said that they were dumping the sump water into the sewage lines. My house is like that too. It was built in 1955 and that was the way it was done then so I get a pass from the city. My question is; do you need a P-trap along with the one-way valve? I have but I'd love to dump the p-trap. From what I've read though code does require the P-trap in Alberta. Any ideas?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  5 лет назад

      If you are dumping into a floor drain you do not need one cause that drain will have a trap. If you are dumping right into a sewer line then you should have one as well as a sewer back check valve maybe. Use my forum if you have more questions. www.house-improvements.com/forums/

    It didn't sound like there was enough water to make the check valve hold. It sounded like the water was leaking back in. When I was a kid we had a sump pump. During the winter the water would freeze in the street and block the exit drain. I stayed home from school on those mornings and chopped ice with an axe. Looking back I could have just dumped some of the water softener salt we had into the sump well and alleviated that problem.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  8 лет назад

      Because the check valve is a couple inches above the inlet the water before the check does leak back.

    Hey Shannon! I am installing a Plumbstar basin with lid lock (2-hole insert). I already dug the hole and I am filling in the sides with gravel and want to cement it flush up to the lid. Question is...How does the water travel into the basin if I create a radon breather and the PVC that is pumped out with the sump pump if I make the lid tight? I went to their website and have googled my butt off and have not quite figured it out. Please help me!

    what type of battery did you use?

  • @TLB824
    @TLB824 8 лет назад +2

    Sitting a modern battery on concrete is not a problem at all, this is a myth from way back in the old days when battery boxes were made of wood or steel, now days they are made of plastic which is non conductive and the cool concrete floor is also non conductive when dry.
    If the concrete is moist it can conduct electricity but the plastic case prevents this from happening, please see the link below for more info.
