The pros and cons to a plant based diet

  • In this video I investigate some of the claims about plant-based diets. We start by clarifying what this even means; is it the same as veganism? What are the dangers of consuming animal protein, or could there be some benefits? What benefits are there of eating a PBD? What effects do our dietary choices have on the environment? Finally, I give some recommendations as to some differences we should all try to be making for both human and planetary health.

    Well done, a clear and concise presentations for the pros and cons of various diets we have at present. I find it challenging to discuss these topics with my vegan friends no matter how much science I bring into it but I liked how clear you came across.

    IMO, I would definitely disagree with the environmental impact of plant-based diets vs animal protein. The total energy of one cow, from birth to plate is substantially more than plant to plate. I live in an agricultural state in USA. Maybe raising animals is done differently in the UK? Thanks for the thoughts...a very complex subject and people can be very passionate about their diet.

      I think it is a complex issue, but yes, definitely arguments in favour of lower environmental impact with plant based.

      Not sure what you mean by a pro? As I explain, you need to supplement with B12 if fully plant based and need to work hard to ensure your not missing on other vitamins and minerals

      Melissa Melottey so pleased you enjoyed it! Yes, the researching takes quite a few weeks, then I have to decide what are the key bits to include to keep the videos concise. I think the next one might be on weight loss diets and diet culture in general. Might be a little while again though!

    Is it usually the case for healthy-eating vegans to have to cut on several vegan foods to avoid chronic diseases as "omnivores '' do? Nobody is usually as extreme as eating so many tomatoes and have the risk of stroke, heart attack, high cholesterol, or any other life-threatening disease. We can easily avoid tomato or lettuce extreems without struggling with addictions. And if we indulge too much in potatoes or rice, it may give us extra weight, but I don't see the wide-spread drug-like addiction to certain vegan food that animal food create putting people at risk of living under many medications, suffering, and risk of death. And it is also difficult for "omnivores" to define where the red line is about the amount of the dangerous animal food products that they should consume for every healthy person or for their specific life styles. Because animal food is dangerous to us by nature, and the human body has a tolerance to withstand some of its damaging effects which can be less visible when consumed in lesser amounts or under favorable circumstances. This, and many other factors shows that the human body is not made to eat any animal food.

      There’s plenty of vegan food that it wouldn’t be a good idea to overeat, including ultra processed foods and those high in saturated fats, like coconut oil. Many people have a healthy, balanced diet, so I don’t agree the ‘human body is not made to eat animal food’. The earliest humans were indeed omnivores. There are many benefits to eating a plant based diet, but one can be healthy as an omnivore too.

      @@DrSophieGP I I did not talk of ultra processed animal food, not even processed. All I said was about the normal way animal food is processed, and so all I said is applicable. So, the "ultra processed vegan food" has no context in what I said either. That's why I started my comment saying "healthy-eating vegans". Vegan food that is high in saturated fat is not the food that normally people would have as a usual or primary dish like animal food is. Example, nuts, or coconut. Who would have lunch, breakfast and dinner with a considerable amount of nuts, or coconuts or similar things? Even vegan oils are excluded from some vegan's diets. And there is no usually, addiction to those "high saturated fats vegan foods" But when every animal product represents a high risk of chronic disease if you cross an invisible red line, and you have to have them at every meal almost every day, then it tells you that is not a food for humans. So, think well of what I said and you will see how it makes sense and applies perfectly.
      There is a reason why the percentage of "healthy-eating omnivores" with chronic diseases is much higher than the percentage of healthy-eating vegans.

      @@DrSophieGP To make it more understandable, I do not consume any oil, try to avoid pastas and bread as much as it is possible to my situation, no added sugar whenever possible, etc. What I referred to was non-processed foods both on vegan and non-vegan diets, as natural as possible on both diets. Of course, if you are an omnivore but watch carefully what to eat, and I am a vegan who consumes lots of processed sugars, pastas, alcohol, tobacco, and lack of exercise, you will be much healthier than me. Only an extreme amount of sugar can send me to the grave faster than you, but that is not natural.

    If a diet requires you to take supplements it’s not a good diet. Just my two cents. I first prioritize protein, then fiber, & then whatever the phuck I feel like eating.

      From a health perspective, I agree with you, although people have other reasons why they may want to follow a vegan diet

    Red meat is not linked to disease unless u also eat more carbs and gain weight.
    It is missleading science, causation not proven. Meet eaters also eat more in general, more fries, more soda, more beer etc.

    Meat based diet: better for muscle (complete amino acids), better for teeth (no sugar), better for longevity (less toxins), better for blood sugar, blood pressure, etc.
