  • We finally check off a bucket list item after 6 winters in Alaska, setting lines on a frozen river for the tasty Burbot, also known as freshwater Lingcod. Despite the major challenges we faced along the way, we remain happy for the learning experience and knowledge gained for next season. After successfully catching a few fish, we have a feast back at the cabin as per custom, including Burbot Cocktail and Fish & Chips.
Check out our first Burbot adventure from years ago!

Dad gladly gace it to him and asked if it was for cat food! He said hell no IM gonna eat! He explained how to prepare it he kept the next one. The next time we went dad used to go around and ask people if he could have there burbuts!!!!! I'm 72 now and your video brings back a lot of great memories, thank you and keep up videos!!

Yeh, Eric & Arial: I assume you're fishing the Tanana. Yes, it's the silt that freezes into the ice. You will go through blades like nowhere else. Even the Big Su clears up in winter. Not the Tanana. Also, fishing sloughs in slow to no current is better than fast current. I love your channel!

If you want the water in your water bottle to not freeze, store it upside down and/or inside your parka. Water freezes from top, down so if the bottle is bottom side up, any ice will form at the Kat's bottom leaving liquid free at the top.

Looks like the Burbot is similar to the catfish. The skin is pulled off, and the filet is boneless. We love Blackened Catfish. When I was younger, my husband and I would set lines out in the river here in Mississippi. We filled the freezer with catfish, Delicious! Enjoy watching your videos.

I've skinned a lot of catfish and I've found the if you hammer a nail into a tree etc and clip the nail head off you can impale the head of the fish on the nail and pull the skin off. Of course, you have to make the cut around the head first.

The fish you caught. I’ve never seen one of those before. But there again I used to fish on the other side of the world back home in Ireland. There is a saltwater fish that looks a little bit similar to it. It would be bigger, though known as ling. When you setting the line on the polls and leaving it overnight. It used to remind me of night lying fishing with my grandfather. You would wait for the tide to go out you would walk out about a mile a mile and a half to one of the nice big sandbanks you would drive in some poles and run a line from one pole to the other, very similar to a washing line. You would have trace lines coming off this with hooks and bait you would walk back home. Sleep wait eight hours for the tide to come in and then roll back out again and see what you had on your night lines. sometimes we would catch a few meals. Sometimes we get nothing but a bit of exercise and fresh air.

So excited about your new adventure!! You kids are amazing! Good that you have all the right gear to explore and experience Alaska on your terms!! We do live vicariously through you!! Here's something to try with your burbot...
    Poor Man's Lobster...
    1) In a medium pot, mix 1/4 cup of salt with 1/4 cup of brown sugar; add 3 cups of water, stir to dissolve, then bring to a boil.
    2) While waiting for the mixture to boil, cut your burbot (start with 1 pound) into 1" cubes.
    3) In a smaller saucepan, melt a cube of butter. Add herbs to the butter, if you want.
    4) Once the mixture comes to a boil, drop the fish into the mixture and allow to boil for about 2 minutes or until you know it's cooked through.
    5) Use a strainer spoon to fish the fish out of the pot and place in a bowl.
    6) Dip fish into that yummy butter and enjoy the closest thing to lobster without the lobster!!
Let us know how it goes with burbot!! We typically use halibut our brother in Soldotna sends us every year!!
Stay well kids and keep those videos coming! We love that you've moved into the interior... totally different climate than where you were before, don't you agree?

Out on the outer banks we usually surf fish for whiting and flounder but one fall there was a big run on blue fish which isn't desired as much.
We cut up the blue into nice sized chunks and coated them with cayenne pepper and yellow mustard and rolled them in Autrey's hush puppy mix and deep fried them in peanut oil. They were cooked at the right temperature so that the light batter wasn't soaked in oil. That made for popcorn sized bites that were delicious and the best fish I ever had

Great video. This reminds me, I just used their amazon affiliate link when I needed to buy a 20$ item. Remember when we do this it does not cost us more, but they get a tiny percentage, as if they are referring us to Amazon. One great way to support their channel.

Burbot is sometimes referred to as "Poor man's lobster". The taste and texture resemble lobster, (although not everyone would agree). Either way, it's absolutely delicious, especially when it's fresh. Also, next time you're fishing with set lines for burbot, try using circle hooks. They are identical to the hooks that commercial folks use for halibut. But you would use hooks that are considerably smaller. Likely in the 1/0 size. Good luck.

Maybe vacuum seal a smaller number of bait and only remove a pack to thaw for the trip... Always take your gear! Better to have it and not need it! And always plan on something going wrong with your tools, this way you either have a backup or something to fix it! Make a pack list and get it laminated, you can use either a dry erase marker or wax pencil to check the box when you set up for your trips! Nice video and great job getting 7 fish!

Glad you caught some Burbot! You said you really wanted some this season. Now, this will sound weird, but I love the effort you put into getting foods you want. How it should be, to remind us we shouldn't take food for granted. Another great video!❤

The ruffed grouse is our state bird here in Pennsylvania. I've hunted them for many years and am not alone in declaring them one of the tastiest game birds. You are correct in saying it's hard to tell apart from chicken.

I love the fishing episodes so much. The grouse and fish looked so good, I’m from North Carolina so I always fix (yes we say fix) French fries, slaw, and hush puppies when I fry fish. It’s so yummy. You guys are the best, can’t wait to see what you are going to be into next time. Please stay safe and God bless.

Hey guys, sorry I haven’t commented in a while, few little health hiccups, nothing to write home about. I just love y’all’s expeditions, I look so forward to your videos every week, and I certainly appreciate the time and effort it takes into making one. What a beautiful fish, and I know it had to taste good. I swear yours is the only video that I start watching and all of a sudden it’s over, and it seems too short, but then I look at it, and it was 40 minutes. Just an absolute joy to watch. You guys take care, and let me know if your address is changed. Thanks so much for putting out the videos. It always make my day brighter, Jimmy.

You are becoming quite the hunter gatherers and as an old-time fisherman I could have told you in the cold you want to go deep never had burbot but they look like catfish and seems you skinned them the same way and catfish do not have much flavor so we always marinated hours overnight but isn't it fun to have fun getting food and I do love me some grouse 👍👌😁💥🐝

Way cool. It reminds me of running a trap line back in the.... never mind. Yes i,m old. Well older. Eric, I,m not a fan of fried batter either. I thin coat and roll in seasoned bread crumbs. No heart burn that way. Great run I love the fishing you both do. Thanks. Jim from New Mexico.
