A couple of ideas: 1) Add outside storm windows, that might cut down inside water creation. 2) Build an inside(the coup) sand thermal battery. Make a manifold, perhaps a car exhaust manifold used in reverse, that the heat output blows through. Surround the manifold with lots of sand in a metal box. The sand will store the heat for hours...

As you both went through the process of how you remodeled and moved the coop I thought back to all of the videos that got us from there to here and now! I’m so happy to see how well it turned out. For the heater, you could run it off of a thermostat. There are options to turn the heater on and off, and coupled to a thermostat, you could automate that. In addition, you could add monitoring (how is cellular there?) so you could check on the chickens and their coop temperature remotely for extra peace of mind.

Another GREAT slice of your life in Alaska. Whilst I have always lived by the sea and/or close to the country, your videos show me how much I don't know about nature, the environment etc.

I’m also in Alaska and am so glad you have found a great way to heat the coop for your chickens.
I seriously hate it when I see people say how their chickens have lost body parts but then the day their chickens are fine…like really?? No.
Those little diesel heaters are great! We have them for our off the road system/off grid place and my son and one for his coop. Makes a world of different in both our flocks to give them some heat during our long, cold winters.
One thing I’ve found that works well for coops and solves the moisture problem is using sand on the floor instead of hay/straw/wood chips.
I use about 4-6 inches of a mix of dry washed all purpose and traction sand. It’s surprisingly insulating - kept the water from freezing inside my coop when it was about -10° except for a thin ice layer the chicken easily broke through, and dry sand stays loose and free flowing no matter how cold it is.
If some water is spilled, just the water spot will freeze and can easily be scooped up or if it’s not frozen it can be raked around to dispose the moisture so it basically disappears.
It’s super quick and easy to clean by raking it. It’s basically a desiccant so it dries out any moisture from the chicken droppings.
Kept clean means it does not stink and any residual sand on the manure is fine in compost according to the local Cooperative Extension Service.
The hens can also have dust baths any time they want!
Just thought I’d share an option that works exceedingly well for my coop.

Have you tried sprouts for the chickens? You’ll need 6-7 mason jars, and lentils or anything else you want to sprout for them. Their chicken feed might work. Day one, 1/4 cup lentils, soak for at least 8 hours. Day 2 rinse day ones sprouts at least twice and start another 1/4 cup in another jar. Repeat everyday until day 6-7 and you’ll have a jar full of sprouts every day for them.

Question: does this method work better if the lids are vented or can you just use the regular jar lid as is? I like sprouts in my salads and have been thinking of trying this.

    • @Gardeningchristine
      @Gardeningchristine 4 месяца назад +1

@@jjallie18 You should probably watch some videos on how to start sprouts. There are some good ones. And I’m sure there are some safety precautions you should follow for human consumption… and I’m not an expert. But you can be as simple as using your hand to catch the seeds when you are draining them so you don’t loose them and leaving the lid off all together, cheese cloth, mesh, holes poked in the lids, there’s a hundred different ways to do it. But I’d watch some experts show you how first.

    Hey, besties! ❤
I just spent all day with my chickens! We’ve been having nasty weather, except for today, and they were going stir crazy. So, we kicked around our acreage. I have two flocks of birds with two different coops, but let’s just say… One is more of a summer chateau. I worried when I decided to consolidate, based on weather, but they seem to be fine, so long as I offer up plenty of water, food, scratch, and ESPECIALLY any fresh fruits or veggies. I went to the store for my ladies to have extra special treats… The produce department got a little slimmer, along with my wallet, but my ladies are spoiled. Also, the next (or maybe the one after) project is to decide to fortify both coops for weather, or add onto the one really big one, kinda like y’all, and keep them together. I’ve raised them since they were bebes, two different hatch dates, and that’s why two coops. I really, REALLY love your ideas and how you incorporate them in for what best suits you. Awesome video, as always. ❤

That chicken coup is better insulated and heated than my apartment! 😆I'm a bit jealous right now as temps haven't been above freezing all week. I've been wrapped up in several layers, dragging a blanket around and hugging a hot cup of tea most of the time. It's a beautiful and thoughtful build for the chickens. It's clear to see they are very happy.😁❤️

Just so you know that you're sitting on a fortune, 18 eggs are $5.21 in Florida. Blessed chickens and a blessed you. And for a giggle I'll share that it's cold here too. We're flipping out over 25 degrees! Be well and have a great week.

I was getting $5 a dozen back in the early 90’s and couldn’t hardly pay for feed. Feed was half the price it is now. You have to remember the egg factories are subsidized by the government so yes they can make a lot of money with $5 a dozen.

Great video. One suggestion: the little diesel fired heaters must have a good air supply for the combustion, you could put a couple of vents in to the chickens area to your heater/tech room, and put a fiber filter over them. That away you would have more surface filter area to supply air to the heater. I was a truck mechanic for years and worked on the diesel fired heaters a lot. 😊

As Homesteaderettes in Maine, I encourage you to add a Finnish sauna to your lives. Ours is built on a gravel pad which allows us to splash water all over the place, on pressure treated ground contact sills, 8’ x 8’ hot room with a welded steel wood stove e we ith water jacket, , metal chimney and two cedar benches. We finished the walls in white pine, cedar not required. We made recycled cedar board pallets for the floor so we don’t walk on the gravel. There’s a 4’ x 8’ changing room. We put an awning window in the hot room with tempered glass. We insulated the ceiling and not the walls. In Maine it’s cold but I think insulated walls may work better for you. No plumbing. No electricity. We haul water and use battery lamps
We find the sauna has great health benefits and gives us better tolerance to winter. Great way to clean up!
