I'm so glad that Gary taught me early in my (newish) Mac experience to stop minimizing windows. I either hide them (rarely), or just let them be and work on whatever I'm working on while leaving them in the background. I never really knew why Mac users always seemed to have so many windows open, but it works out well in practice.
just got a macbook air recently and i was struggling with the keyboard shortcuts and I didnt feel that macos is efficient for multitasking until i watched this video, thanks!
Thank you, Prof, for once again educating us on how to get the most from our Apple computers. This was a very functional and informative video, as always. Again, thank you.
Thank you so much. You didn't directly give what I want but you helped me get there. If anyone cares I wanted to make cmd+tab move between the last used apps in the same space/desktop. I just assigned another shortcut to that (control+§) from setting>keyboard>shortcuts>keyboard>fifth option from the top. I hope that helps.
Why does Mac make it so cumbersome to do simple tasks? I've used windows for a long time and it's so much more user friendly, keeping everything super simple and straightforward.
I have used all of these at one point or another but it really does help to figure out which one you like best and stick with it. I have a question; is there a way on macOS to search for files, like on a server, by copying/pasting a file path sent by someone?
@6:00 "There is no way to use the Arrows or the Tab Key or anything to select a window here. I wish Apple would add this, but it's never been there." Thank you so much for that information Gary! I'm new to Mac and the thing that I am missing is being able to switch between all open windows with only the keyboard. Do you know if there is any way to do this with a third party app?
First, continue watching from that point and I show something you may find useful (App Expose). Or, you can experiment with Full Keyboard Access, a new feature in Monterey. Other than that, I don't know of an app that will let you do exactly that. You could also use the Dock to access any window. ruclips.net/video/9Yvx6JcjPY4/видео.html Or just use Command+Tab to go to an app, and then Command+` to go to the window you want. Lots of options.
With these tips, it does get easier to switch windows with the touchpad and with the keyboard. However, if you're using a conventional external mouse, you don't have easy access to mission control. Thought I set up a hot corner shortcut that helps with that!
Great explanation of how to navigate. I like how Apple goes above and beyond to make so many ways to navigate from all visual w/ mouse/trackpad to all keyboard for accessibility. My only grip is similar to yours where some app windows are excluded from expose style view if they are full screen or minimized. Apple should just make all app windows come up whether in those modes or not.
Hey Gary, do you have any idea whether it is possible to focus the Finder sidebar using the keyboard only? Furthermore, is there a macOS replacement for the (context) menu key, which sometimes is placed between right alt and ctrl on Windows keyboards? I'm looking for a way to open the context menu of the selected item in Finder when navigating via keyboard. Thanks a lot!
First, what are you trying to do with the Finder sidebar? Many of the things there have direct keyboard shortcuts. So no need to use a shortcut to activate the sidebar, and then more key presses to select something. As for a keyboard shortcut for the context menu, it wouldn't make sense since it needs, well, "context." There has to be a location. So just a key press wouldn't be enough.
Some great tips again, I look forward to your daily videos, it would be good if you could do a video on Apple Music showing about downloading and libraries etc. Thanks
How can I cmd+tab switch to a app that is minimised. I red that you have to cmd+tab and then jump to the option key, which 1. doesn't work reliably and 2. is super dumb. Any ideas?
Use hide instead of minimize. Then you can Command+Tab easily to it. Keep in mind windows minimize, apps hide. You Command+Tab back to the app, but the window will still be minimized.
cmd-backtick doesnt work, especially if you have foreign keyboard. Apple is incompetent to address window switching (this works on linux and win) so I have to use external app to remap this.
@@Fair_dinkum well, on my M1 it does not work. Moreover, foreign language keyboards does not contain backtick. Therefore I had to pay for some small apps that enable to assign backtick to other keys with better options than Apple. Otherwise I can not work with several excel files opened in the same time. I think Apple does not care.
@@macmost for some reason I thought Command+Tab is cycling through ALL open apps... but I was wrong, it cycles only through the current acting desktop apps. Cool! thank you
I don't know why switching between apps doesn't work for me even though I changed the setting already. Using three or four fingers doesn't really work. Only the Mission Control. :(
Hey! Can you do a video exploring Microsoft 360? I think all college students can benefit from using the most out of our free services. I would recommend focusing on word and outlook.
@@macmost * I see that it only works with windows that are in full screen. I tested it between Firefox and Numbers and it worked. Turns out I only had Firefox and Photoshop in full screen and for whatever reason, with Photoshop this shortcut doesn't work. Maybe because I have two monitors and have the tool pallets on the second monitor, but I have no idea if this is the cause :)
@@PGNogueira Control+Right or Left is for switching between Spaces. So it goes between Desktops, Full Screen Apps and groups of Split View apps (the three types of Spaces). Photoshop has its own set of keyboard shortcuts that will override system ones, so maybe it is using Control+Right or Left for something else.
My favorite method of switching between apps and windows is simply Command Tab (move right) and Command Tilde (move left), basically the App Switcher. I use Tabs for all apps including Finder. I don't typically have too many files open at once so I don't need much else. I also use Command H to Hide instead of Minimize and Command Tab works perfectly for this.
So it looks like there is no way how to organise and navigate app windows divided across desktops. Either you see a list of all app windows not divided by desktops or you see ungrouped/grouped windows on a particular desktop which is completely useless if you have more than 3 of them. Gnome is so much more productive and convenient (or probably any other Linux desktop).
It is sad for Mac to switch recent opened windows for more gestures and actions, as I know you can just use three fingers to switch recent opened windows smoothly in windows
@macmostvideo Do you know an already existing app that I can use to make clickbait like yours without me buying premier pro on my Mac Pro??? Also, can you show how to code a game like snake? Thanks :)
20 years of Microsoft Windows efficiency tips knowledge translated into a 10 minutes video to help me out on my transition to Mac OS. BIG THANKS!!
I’ve been using a Mac for years, and it turns out there’s always room to learn more stuff about it! Thanks for the video, it’s excellent 👍
Me too and I’ve never understood what mission control was supposed to do, so I just ignored it as one of those obscure things.
He does have a gift! 😎
Exactly! However I was getting a bit dizzy of the possibilities and the screen flashing with windows.

Not really. If you want to switch apps and windows with the keyboard only, Mission Control isn't the option you want.

It looks like Gary is using Screenflow. It’s great.

To switch to another window within an app, I also use command + "larger/smaller than" key.🙂

For some reason, group apps by window doesn't show the app icons for me (i'm on a 13 inch m1 macbook pro, running Ventura). Any clue why?
