I've been using the Mission Control for many many years. It works just as well with a mouse and hot corners as with the track pad. I love it! I usually have 3 desktops open, sometimes a fourth. You can set one of your hot corners to display all your windows like you were doing with your trackpad here. I've been loving that feature for a decade!
Thanks! Since I switched from Windows to Mac, I was totally frustrated with the display management and I really thought windows was more friendly to use. You opened up a new world for me now and now my mac can come to its right!

Windows is more friendly to use. This is powerful but on Windows you literally just click on the icon on the dock (taskbar) to see your windows for that app. Hold down Ctrl to switch between each window for that app. Windows also has Mission Control (Task View) but there's less need for as you can just switch between apps from the taskbar anyway. Windows 11 also groups app windows together, one of the main Stage Manager. Windows also easily lets you snap two windows side by side, something you can only do on MacOS by going full screen and Windows 11 takes it further with window snapping. All you do is hover over the maximise button and you can arrange up to four windows side by side. It's all very simple. No muscle memory or configuration. MacOS is powerful window management remains an over engineered mess. Stuff bolted on top of other stuff. When they could just let you click on the icon on the dock to see all the windows for that app. Why overthink it.
@@bradavon I use to feel this way as a lifelong Windows user for about 4 months after I switched. In my experience, Windows way of doing things works well for 3-4 open applications. Also, the transition is much smoother and responsive on MacOS. Windows suffers from slow loading. I think this is especially true now that the M-series chip has taken over. Perhaps when the ARM Windows gets polished, it will be different.
I'm a Mac power user since OS 7 and keyboard shortcut fan. Thank you for this super informative video! Despite using Mission Control with desktops, I never thought to assign apps to different desktops. And I never realized there were keyboard shortcuts to activate and navigate Mission Control. Game changer!

One of my favorite tutorials I have come across. So helpful for the every-day use. I am constantly frustrated with the open windows and trying to navigate between them. I am not a fan of the new operating system layout either. I thought it was clean and simple before. One other frustration I often have is when I bring up the calculator and it switches me to another page. I want to be able to have my app full screen and use the calculator staying on top but have been unable to figure out how, if anyone has that answer. Thank you.
Hi @thehonestman26! In addition to Stage Manager, I exclusively use the trackpad on my laptop to utilize the 3 and 4 finger gestures to do mission control among everything else. So helpful to get a Birds Eye view of all overlapping windows. From my experience, if there is an app in Full Screen Mode, nothing can go on top of it. Even with the new feature of adding widgets to the desktop doesn't go on a full screen window. The only possibility would be the Notification Center. If you're in full screen mode with an app and you bring up notification center, that does overlay on top of the full screen app, but there is no option for a calculator in there that I can find! seems a bit silly! I even downloaded a bunch of calculator apps on my iPhone to see if I could do it on there and have it sync, but that doesn't do it either! THANK YOU so much for watching! Hi Joel, I noticed that you skipped right over 'system data' on your storage video. I have 512GB and system data takes up a staggering 194GB. What is this and can I trim it somehow? I do not use iCloud. I refuse to. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Stewart
Hi @stewarthughesstewart! Yeah, the System Data is something that can fluctuate greatly and it really controlled by the Mac itself. Check out this Apple Support article below: Change Storage settings on Mac support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-storage-settings-mchl3d437fbc/14.0/mac/14.1.2 "System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can’t manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac. You can manage your data that falls outside the other categories using the Finder or the third-party apps that created it." I would say restart you Mac often and make sure you're up to date. This is something that many people experience and it can be quite frustrating! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! Thanks for your response re System Data Joel. I have done all the cleaning up (optimising) I can do using Apple’s recommendations but of course I cannot touch System Data. Since I wrote to you it has expanded from 194GB to a staggering 292GB, more than half of my 512GB storage. The major software that I use on my Mac is Cubase and I am scrupulous in moving data to external back up drives. I have also backed up the family iPad and iPhones and transferred those backups to external drives as well. I turn off the Mac daily and it is up to date with Sonoma (19GB!) I know you love your Mac but Apple’s determination to get us to use the Cloud, and pay for it, and the price it charges for internal memory is borderline fraud in my book. Cheers, Stewart
I have a Mac Mini that I have 2 displays on. I use one for myself and as a display for customers. Is there a way to Mirror one and only one certain desktop to the customer display as I'd rather they not see the main screen? Right now I have it as extended display, but then I have to turn and type to see whats on the secondary display as it's positioned behind me. If I could mirror just that display, I could work the customer desktop on my screen and switch without changing anything on customers screen.

Funny, ever since Sonoma's release never considered turning on the stage manager, not on still now and I turned off showing suggested and recent apps in Dock instead... now, that I tried it in practice-- I was wrong in thinking its was useless, will stick with it for more getting use to.
I've been going NUTS trying to figure out why after an OS upgrade I had to "single click" twice on apps in the dock to make them active. Never in a million years thought it was a multiple desktop issue. Thank you.

Thank you for the tips. I wanted to know, it there a way to use mission control with one desktop, but every time I swipe up, the windows will stay in the same position they were? For me, every time I swipe up, my IDE is here, browser is next to it, terminal is over there on the left, finder on the right. When I choose an app and swipe later again, they are all shuffled. I want every window to stay in its place. Is there anything I missed in settings? it drives me insane
I'm a pretty experienced mac user, but you showed me something new. I didn't know I could pin an app to a desktop. FWIW, I prefer my mouse to a trackpad....

Hi Joel, Just upped my MacBook - Sonoma (m series). Wondering if you can solve a couple of questions for me. Love spaces and your video, just rewatched to remind me. Also love trackpad on this new MBP! Questions: 1. the plus mark on the spaces bar moved to the right. Over an hour looking for settings...can't find how to switch it to the right (correct to me also right handed) side. My muscle memory is annoyed. I am sure I can work around it but uhhhhh! 2. Mission Control shows in applications, but I can't drag it to my dock. phhhh 3. Unrelated to this video, I have been using voice over to read as I follow along and make notes in all my "how to" pdfs. I changed a setting to highlight the current area that is being read - it manages the screen too well - I can't keep it where I want it long enough to highlight with markup. Do you happen to know how to reset that - to Not highlight the current section that is being read? (another hour hunting! - I defer). 4 MISS YOU!

Hi, thanks for the video. One thing annoys me - when I swipe up to get to the Mission Control, the order of the apps always changes. it'd be great if they're always at the same spot, so that I can create a mental map.
Yeah it is great, until you try to find that minimized window. Expose or mission control doesnt show the minimized window until that app is selected. Or is there other way to show minimized window?
I hear ya @karlranile4601, it's not perfect and maybe there will be some improvements in macOS 15. I will say that if I have multiple windows open in Safari and I minimize any of them, then get clustered in the stage manager and I can use keyboard shortcut to cycle through them. (command + ~) Also if I swipe up on my Mac trackpad and do Mission Control, it does show all of my minimized windows individually. It does take some time getting used to though. Hi @Adam-jj9ql! After you swipe up with 3 fingers, you need to move your cursor to the very top of the screen. Then it will pop down and show you all the thumbnails. So I tended to open email message and browser pages or spreadsheets that are related and put them into a desktop window. I may setup several desktops with a mix of content in each and then start working down the list. Unfortunately when I reboot my computer any virtual desktops that come back do not necessarily have the same content in them so email may move or a browser window may move to a different virtual desktop. I do not know what it can not keep content linked together in the same virtual desktop. I looked at Stage Manager but it appears you can only have content from one application and not a mix of apps (e.g. browser windows and email messages in one app set)?
Hi Joel, just found a great deal on amazon through your link for 4tb ssd. Is there a big difference between the san disk extreme and the extreme pro? Geez the extreme was 60 ish % off! Question: on your tutorials how do I tell which OS you are on. Everything (features of apps) changes so fast and I am watching vids from years ago. Almost no-one references the os or iOS or in my case osx (not really!)
Hi @ny6901! There would be a slight difference between the SanDisk Extreme and the SanDisk Extreme Pro. The main difference is the Read and Write speeds. Every memory card and hard drive (either external or internal, SDD or not) has a read and write speed. This matters depending on what you're doing. For example if you shoot a lot of high resolution video like 4K or even 8K, you need memory cards that have a higher read and write speed. Otherwise the information comes too quickly and the memory card can't keep up. Same for video editing on a computer. I you do a lot of video editing as an example with multiple cameras or very high resolution, if your external hard drive is not fast enough, it will have a hard time playing the content in real time. The SanDisk Extreme Pro specs are: Read Speeds: 2000MB per second Write Speeds: 2000MB per second The SanDisk Extreme specs are: Read Speeds: 1050MB per second Write Speeds: 1000MB per second I hope that helps. Also good point on the what macOS or even iOS version. I should start putting that in the video description below or call out during video if I remember! Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! If this video was useful, I’d love for you to SHARE it with on social media and say how it helped you! Hey I got a question when u upgrade ur iCloud will all ur photos that u pushed all sync and be in ur iCloud now and not be full and will update and when u log into iCloud the photos will be there
Hey - terrific video thanks. I was hoping you would speak a bit about how the features of stage manager and mission control interact, as I have found this to be really problematic in some instances. For example, it is possible to drag windows from one space or desktop to another, and this works great with stage manager switched OFF. With stage manager on, I get really weird behaviour, including the window I moved existing in the new space, but not being editable sometimes (I have no idea what governs whether this happens or not). Other times the window will not be movable in the new space: you can drag it to a new position but when you let go of the mouse button, it just returns to its old position. The strangest behaviour though is that the window in the new space sometimes tries to resize to a slanted thumbnail like the stage manager thumbnails, except it is not in the far left of the screen but somewhere in the mid-left half of the screen. These quirks make it impossible to work efficiently with dragging windows between spaces with stage manager ON... at least for me. The other incredibly bizarre and irritating quirk I've experienced is often when switching between spaces/desktops, the app in focus in the space I land on will display for the first fraction of a second, but then the focus switches to one of the other apps or app groups within stage manager. For the life of me I can't imagine why this would be desirable especially because the app being switched to seems random! If I could know that the app in focus in a given space will always remain in focus when I switch away and back to that space, I think I could live with the other quirks, but this one makes using spaces and stage manager together a bit of a nightmare for me. Anyone with any tips as to what causes this and how to fix it would receive my eternal gratitude.
I have a bunch of folders on my desktop and have them clustered according to project. Can I put the folders for one project on a separate desktop in Mission Control?

Great question @antasytaccount. I think it depends on how you want to use Spaces. I personally will use it only when I want to isolate an app. For example when I use Apple Music on my Mac, I'll just drag that to a different space so that there is no other windows cluttering it. It's an easy swipe with 3 fingers from left to right to quickly move between apps. I also use 3 fingers up a lot to get a Birds Eye view of all app windows that are overlapping. I think it's the trackpad and keyboard shortcuts that makes these features worth it. THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! Despite some options, this for me is still something Mac is seriously lacking (certainly when compared to Linux i3) I want for instance multiple spaces where I can go to with one shortcut, so I can i.e. quickly switch to my browser session for a specific client, specific applications, ... There is a tool called Aerospace that comes close, but it comes with its own issues where it struggles with the OS 😐
That sounds like a cool app @DenCato, I'll have to check it out! I agree, there could be more to apple's built in multitasking features. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. A big disadvantage of those Space, in comparison to Windows (which is much thoughtful when adding new features), that one can not give them the names (like Education Space 2, Business Space 3, side hustle, science etc). Very frustrated with MacOS when multitasking, on windows is so much easier. Beside, if u open multiple Windows of single App, u will never figure out which is which. I forced to install HyperDock to visualize and navigate between them.
I agree @AmeltonGsairus! With the introduction of this feature it was nice, but there is definitely more that @Apple could improve on. Even with the new "Windows" feature added in macOS 15, there is always room for improvements! I think I've heard of that HyperDock app before, I'll have to check it out! @@Learnwithjoel After my long research I found a good workaround with the Spaces: Spaces Renamer. The installation though is a little bit tricky but if you have it it is a magic (dont do ANY update to MacForge!!). MacOS, as well as iOS are always behind the developing trend. It runs in the family of Apple ecosystem so tosay...unfortunately. The way Apple think how Spaces should be used, is dead for a 100 years since one has bigger screens and it is stupid to use one App per Space (then it makes sence, since the name of spaces will be given to the open App and navigation is much easier). Unfortunately, Apple on the OS design is a waaaaaaay behind in comparison to MS Windows OS.
Has anyone found a way to assign different safari windows to different desktops. I’m guessing not if the whole app option is controlled by options-assign to. Update-If I open mission control and drag and drop the safari window into the desk top I want it stays there.
I have two external monitors so I doesn't make sense to use screens when you actually have monitors! Ok, if you only have the mac screen I understand, but otherwise just with a movement of my eyes I can look at other monitors and no need of pads, shortcuts, etc
Great point @deevocg6692. There are some limitations. What I find a little silly is that there are widgets that you can overlay and have on each screen, however something as simple as a calculator is not even an option from Apple! This is powerful but over thought compared to how Windows does it. On Windows you literally just click on the icon on the dock (taskbar) to see your windows for that app. Hold down Ctrl to switch between each window for that app. Windows also has Mission Control (Task View) but there's less need for it as you can just switch between apps from the taskbar anyway. Windows 11 also groups app windows together, one of the main Stage Manager features. Windows also easily lets you snap two windows side by side, something you can only do on MacOS by going full screen and Windows 11 takes it further with window snapping. All you do is hover over the maximise button and you can arrange up to four windows side by side. It's all very simple. No muscle memory or configuration. MacOS is powerful but window management remains an over engineered mess. Stuff bolted on top of other stuff. When they could just let you click on the icon on the dock to see all the windows for that app. Why overthink it.
Have you tried pressing Alt-Tab on Windows? I had used Windows for over 20 years and I had known about it since beginning and it's the primary way I switch windows. I don't even touch the taskbar most of the time and my taskbar is always hidden (and so is my macOS dock). Windows has way better first party native features that lend to productivity. Apple only wants to make macOS look cool but don't care about productivity. When I switched to macOS, I had to get a bunch of third party tools just to make macOS window management more sane: Lwouis's AltTab and Sempliva's Tiles. (Also, Maccy for clipboard history, something Windows recently introduced natively and I couldn't live without ever since.) And if your mouse doesn't come with its own software, you'll need to get SteerMouse or BetterMouse because Apple's mouse management is sht as well. Natural Scrolling appears separate for mouse and trackpad, but they're the SAME setting, What in the actual Fk?
Yeah bro, Stage Manager is really a multitasking booster. You have to combine Stage Manager with Virtual Desktops. I always open 9-11 Desktops for specific purpose. Every desktop runs perfectly with it's own Stage Manager. Amazing productivity. Windows's multitasking features still far behind.

Crazy bad take. Windows has had their equivalent of Spaces for a long time. Not to mention window management is horrific on Mac. Alt-tab on windows alone is more powerful than any of these so called features.
@@techno_lag switching spaces on mac left to right with the keyboard shortcut / gesture with higher refresh rate takes a very long time and it's still not been fixed for over 3 years

Thanks Joel, but I am somewhat less impressed by your latest editing style, chopping sentences into several segments, if my description makes sense. Also and whilst relatively quiet, the 'background' music is unnecessary.
I really appreciate the feedback @60 beats! I think I’ve been editing out all the silence and “um’s” between thoughts! I’ll certainly keep that in consideration for future recordings! Thanks!
Why is the dock full of applications which are not running? Isn't this a waste of screen space? It obviously is hard to track running applications with that. Just put the running apps there and tracking running apps or switching between them should be fairly easy. Your solution to use "Stage Manager" for app-switching is weird, it will steal even more usable space from the screen. I don't get it. o) And then, maybe just use ALT+Tab to switch applications + windows? No need for "Mission Control" and touch gestures. You Mac users make your life unnecessary hard, hu? If you can switch applications with keyboard (ALT+Tab) and the left hand being over they keyboard anyway, you don't even have to move any hand when switchin applications or you can do mousework with the left hand in sync with what you press on the keyboard. I should also do some training videos I guess.. o)
Hi @ytbone9430! I don't think there's any right or wrong way to multi-task on a Mac or any computer for that matter. There's always multiple ways to accomplish a single task The Dock and the sidebar of Stage Manager can both be hidden which can then provide the maximum amount of screen space. I'm assuming you're a windows user as one of the main keyboard shortcuts to switch between apps is "Command + Tab" not "ALT + Tab" You should totally do some training videos! Everyone learns differently! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know!
There really are a ton of options that I think most users don't realize! I'm glad this gave a little bit of hope @koosdeklerk1174!

Can windows save the monitors for another session.. it would save me a lot of work..
amen@@bradavon
@@bradavon I use to feel this way as a lifelong Windows user for about 4 months after I switched. In my experience, Windows way of doing things works well for 3-4 open applications. Also, the transition is much smoother and responsive on MacOS. Windows suffers from slow loading. I think this is especially true now that the M-series chip has taken over. Perhaps when the ARM Windows gets polished, it will be different.
I'm a Mac power user since OS 7 and keyboard shortcut fan. Thank you for this super informative video!

Hi Joel, I noticed that you skipped right over 'system data' on your storage video. I have 512GB and system data takes up a staggering 194GB. What is this and can I trim it somehow? I do not use iCloud. I refuse to.

Hi @stewarthughesstewart!
Yeah, the System Data is something that can fluctuate greatly and it really controlled by the Mac itself.
Check out this Apple Support article below:
Change Storage settings on Mac
support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-storage-settings-mchl3d437fbc/14.0/mac/14.1.2
"System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. You can manage your data that falls outside the other categories using the Finder or the third-party apps that created it."

Hi Joel, thanks for that.@@Learnwithjoel
Thanks for your response re System Data Joel. I have done all the cleaning up (optimising) I can do using Apple’s recommendations but of course I cannot touch System Data. Since I wrote to you it has expanded from 194GB to a staggering 292GB, more than half of my 512GB storage. The major software that I use on my Mac is Cubase and I am scrupulous in moving data to external back up drives. I have also backed up the family iPad and iPhones and transferred those backups to external drives as well. I turn off the Mac daily and it is up to date with Sonoma (19GB!)
I know you love your Mac but Apple’s determination to get us to use the Cloud, and pay for it, and the price it charges for internal memory is borderline fraud in my book.
Cheers,
Stewart
Thank you Joel!! I really struggle managing the desktops when I connect an external Monitor, any advise on that?
I have a Mac Mini that I have 2 displays on. I use one for myself and as a display for customers. Is there a way to Mirror one and only one certain desktop to the customer display as I'd rather they not see the main screen? Right now I have it as extended display, but then I have to turn and type to see whats on the secondary display as it's positioned behind me. If I could mirror just that display, I could work the customer desktop on my screen and switch without changing anything on customers screen.

Same here!
(command + ~)
Also if I swipe up on my Mac trackpad and do Mission Control, it does show all of my minimized windows individually.
It does take some time getting used to though.

@14:06, I do not have the "Options" when I right click on my Finder icon like you have. How do I make this appear in Ventura?
The SanDisk Extreme Pro specs are:
Read Speeds: 2000MB per second
Write Speeds: 2000MB per second
The SanDisk Extreme specs are:
Read Speeds: 1050MB per second
Write Speeds: 1000MB per second
I hope that helps.
Also good point on the what macOS or even iOS version. I should start putting that in the video description below or call out during video if I remember! Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

Can I put the folders for one project on a separate desktop in Mission Control?

what is the point of spaces? i have a feeling that i loose control of my apps where they really are
Great question @antasytaccount.
I think it's the trackpad and keyboard shortcuts that makes these features worth it.

what would be good is if we could rename the 'spaces'.
That's an excellent suggestion @cyberlizardcouk! That could be helpful!

Despite some options, this for me is still something Mac is seriously lacking (certainly when compared to Linux i3)
I want for instance multiple spaces where I can go to with one shortcut, so I can i.e. quickly switch to my browser session for a specific client, specific applications, ...
There is a tool called Aerospace that comes close, but it comes with its own issues where it struggles with the OS 😐
That sounds like a cool app @DenCato, I'll have to check it out!
I agree, there could be more to apple's built in multitasking features.

Update-If I open mission control and drag and drop the safari window into the desk top I want it stays there.
in accesiiblity you can switch on three finger drag
I have two external monitors so I doesn't make sense to use screens when you actually have monitors! Ok, if you only have the mac screen I understand, but otherwise just with a movement of my eyes I can look at other monitors and no need of pads, shortcuts, etc
I still don't get stage manager. I use command-tab to switch between windows and it works perfectly.
The problem I have with Stage Manager is you cant make other apps sich as small apps like calculator to overlap unless you add them in the same group.

(Also, Maccy for clipboard history, something Windows recently introduced natively and I couldn't live without ever since.)
And if your mouse doesn't come with its own software, you'll need to get SteerMouse or BetterMouse because Apple's mouse management is sht as well. Natural Scrolling appears separate for mouse and trackpad, but they're the SAME setting, What in the actual Fk?
Yes, I agree Windows does this simpler than Mac
it does not give the option to use this desktop the only option it gives me is all desktops or none
its so confusing. It doesn't minimise the other app if I click another. They are all just in one space
Yes @koescoin810! The virtual desktops, or as Apple calls them "Spaces". An excellent feature for multitasking!
Thanks so much for watching!

Crazy bad take. Windows has had their equivalent of Spaces for a long time. Not to mention window management is horrific on Mac. Alt-tab on windows alone is more powerful than any of these so called features.
@@techno_lag switching spaces on mac left to right with the keyboard shortcut / gesture with higher refresh rate takes a very long time and it's still not been fixed for over 3 years
just tried on my windows actually and it's pretty slow there as well..
@@techno_lag might be you dont understand how it works
MacOs windows management is frustrating. Still trying to get used to it.

It's infuriating Mission Control and App Exposé don't show minimised windows. What!
Lwouis's AltTab is so much better than Stage Manager.
Literally anything is better than Stage Manager!
Never mind I still can't get to work
protip: you can easily turn on stagemanager from Control Center.

There's always multiple ways to accomplish a single task
The Dock and the sidebar of Stage Manager can both be hidden which can then provide the maximum amount of screen space.
I'm assuming you're a windows user as one of the main keyboard shortcuts to switch between apps is "Command + Tab" not "ALT + Tab"
You should totally do some training videos! Everyone learns differently!

Windows is so much better with window management.
Apple should just license Windows management from MS. THIS LOOKS AWFUL
Huh, absolutely nonprofi mess. To have more apps up is very ugly way. Focus is the way. I will go for actual iPad Pro. Mac is very old way ...
