Update: Apple added the ability to create a keyboard shortcut to turn on and off Stage Manager. Go to System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts (button), and look under Mission Control.

    • @barefeg

Is it possible to use shortcuts to move to different app sets?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 года назад +5

@@barefeg I don't think there's any way. But if switching to an app set is just a single click, how would a Shortcut make that easier? Come to think of it, any Shortcut that switches to, brings to the front, or launches an app should make Stage Manager switch to that app set. So try that.

This is the first time I’ve seen Stage Manager properly showcased and for the first time, I can see how useful it would be once you get used to it. Every other tech review I’ve seen has simply given it a “meh” rating and not bothered to explore it in detail like you have, Gary. Thanks again for an insightful and valuable video! 😊

Yeah right?! I gave this video a try because my devices (macOS, iOS, iPad, etc) went to the latest and saw the feature honestly expecting absolutely nothing after all the dirt and bad rep that Stage Manager has gotten… well, truth be told that by the near end of this video I’m even using on an iPad as it is! Great video! Thank you for explaining Stage Manager in such a clear way! The Shift key will add your minimized app onto your currently visible Stage.

Great tutorial. As a new user transferred from window, I straight up using stage manager at the beginning, so it becomes muscle memory to use stage manager.
I put the dock to the left, and hide the recent app from the stage manager. When I need switching between apps, I just put the mouse to the left side of the screen, and show the recents app from stage manager, or I could just laugh the app from the dock instead. Using spotlight to launch app is also convenient.
The best thing from stage manager is that it let me to return to homepage by clicking an empty space. In window, I used to swipe three fingers down to minimise all app, and now stage manager help me to achieve the same function.
The most frustrating thing is that closing an app in Mac took a few more steps, or need to use command Q short cut. After a week of using the Mac, I understand that quitting apps actually slow down the computer, as launching an app is uses more resources than keeping it in the background, at least for Mac OS. Now, I put my Mac to sleep and never shut it down, except for system update.Ans on the next day, everything just work. No loading, no crashing, just work. Now, my swap memory usage is about 700MB, and my daily write on ssd is about 24-30GB, so my 225GB ssd will still last for very long time. I am very impress with the Mac computer.
Looking back, I think my i7 16GB ram window laptop works faster than the M1 Mac in opening apps, and there are more gesture to use in window, and personally, I think window gesture are more intuitive to use. However, switching between app in Mac, feels so good, and snappy, and is a completely new experience for me. May be I have used the computer wrong the whole time, that I need to close an application and shut down the window pc every time.
To conclude, the stage manager is surprisingly great, and as a new Mac user, it makes Mac OS a snappier, quicker, more user friendly experience than pc in terms of switching between application.

Just a quick note that wasn't mentioned here: If like me, you're someone who has the dock along the left side of your screen, Stage Manager app groups appear to the right of the screen. This causes some challenges pulling up control centre, etc. But it works mostly the same.
EDIT: I meant to write that stage manager icons appear to the right, not left as originally written. Thank you for pointing out my error Alexander.

Amazing tutorial! Stage Manager is exactly what I've needed for ADHD. A way of thinking of this disorder is the phrase "Out of sight, out of mind", which means if it's not physically in front of someone, it might as well not exist.
When I'm multitasking, it's difficult to keep track of different virtual desktops, windows, and multiple monitors, so being able to group apps into spaces that stay within view on the left side of the screen (which is the key here) helps a ton. Mission control helped and still does, but I much prefer this method.
I will add, restricting the ability to drag and drop windows between spaces sucks. It means the user must strategically open the desired windows onto a new screen to create spaces. Really unintuitive because the user *does* have the ability to drag windows to the Stage Manager view, and this same concept exists across Mission Control and the entirety of macOS... Lastly, this concept is a bit cumbersome on iPadOS (especially 11" models), and its integration with existing multitasking concepts there feels poorly done.

For what it's worth, Stage manager could be a lot better with a few tweaks. For instance, I've noticed that if you drag a window from the stage manager stack to the right, it stays persistent. This is handy, I sometimes like to have "Reminders" static between desktops, which you could do in previous OS versions.
Having some apps persistent overall ALL desktops would be welcome though. "Options > assign to This Desktop, All etc" doesn't really do anything when Stage Manager is enabled. This could be pilot error of course.

Instead of dragging apps back and forth (as shown in 4:56 of this video), just do this
    1. shift click an app in stage manager to add it in an open set
    2. shift click the title bar of a centered app to move it back to stage manager.

  • @MaxwellMcKinnon

Great video showcasing what this is.
Weird solution that takes up significant screen space to be useful. Or adds tedious precise clicking on a tiny icon twice to turn it off and on, which still doesn't turn it on if the window is currently full screen.
Seems like an iPad feature more than a mac feature currently. Any way to quickly make things bigger and only show stage manager when I want to see it? Confirmed there isn't a way to do this, 10:02.
Apple didn't nail the discoverability or usability on this one, but once I discovered window set instead of app set, I see some promise to this feature. At first I was annoyed because the app set makes no sense, the way almost everyone works is one of those browsers goes with a particular app, so opening all the browser windows when you just want one has the same disadvantage mission control has and doesn't actually make managing windows easier. However window set is a pretty cool way to manage it.
It seems like a slight improvement on single screen use, but I'd like the multi screen setup to work better, as confirmed at 11:20.
For now, the best solution for window management and productivity for me is to not keep very many things open and work on one task at a time using the minimum number of windows to do so.

I've encountered a glitch where if I try to transfer an app window form one space to another by clicking and holding on it and then using Control - # to switch it to the corresponding space, it works, but then I can't actually use the window. I can't type in it. I can't move it around (it will drag but then return to its initial screen location after I let go). Your technique of using mission control works flawlessly. I'm not sure if this is just an oversight from Apple or if it is a bug they are aware of... either way, I'm glad I watched your video.

I've been playing with this and it looks really useful. I often have multiple spreadsheets open and some take up most of the screen (27 inch) and hide the others. I can press the Mission Control key and select the one I wish to have on top, but this involves two actions and its not always clear which is the sheet I want, they all look the same. State Manager means I can just click the Excel group until I get she sheet I want. It does seem to work for me.
I've seen some oddities with Mail. When it is active but the window is closed, sometime just the icon appears as a group. This doesn't seem to happen with other apps, but maybe I've not seen it yet. Also if I minimise any window, it just goes to its group on the left rather than the right end of the dock. I'm not sure whether I like this. But its early days, and it looks promising so far.

I just discovered Stage Manager on my Mac this week. I like it in many ways, and I really want to use it because it makes working on the iPad and Mac more similar. However, it also makes working from the desktop the way I am used to more difficult. Dragging a file from the desktop, for example, to an app such as Safari to upload a file to Google Drive is more time consuming. I have to have the Google Drive folder that I need to move the file to already open in the Safari window. Then I go back to the desktop, drag the file icon to the top of the screen or to the left so that the Safari app springloads, push the space bar to fully open Safari, and then drop the file. I work faster with the old setup, and working fast is very important to me, but I think that if I keep practicing, Stage Manager will become my norm.

There are some similarities, but very different implementation. You get the windows on the side, you can customize app sets to combine windows from apps into one App Set, and it works on a per-Desktop-Space level. So think of Stage Manager as a much more advanced version of that. But no use figuring out what it is like or not, just try it and see.

Great vid and clearly demonstrated. I have a new 15" MB Air - I have four home screens as a result of practicing a three-finger gesture, BUT EverNote "lives" on the second screen somehow and everything else is on the first page. Suggestions for how to remedy this?

Excellent and thorough explanation of what stage manager is and how it works. I still can't see a use case that makes it superior in any way to existing window manager paradigms, though.

Wow, thank you for this video. Very comprehensive and easy to follow and understand and seemingly quite thorough and complete. I only have an iPad Pro 12.9” but have just switched this on because I got tired of how the multitasking worked prior to this where switching to another app would basically “reset” and relaunch another app like RUclips unless I used split screen, which was annoying. This is not only a huge improvement for the iPad, but seeing how fully fleshed out this is, this looks like a real game changing feature! I’m getting more and more sold on the Mac every day and will get one eventually, but wow are Apple really digging deep into how to improve usability and productivity! Microsoft has some great stuff, too, but they just don’t have Apple’s knack for hitting home runs or filling the bases very often. This is exciting!

    Great video!
The stage manager is missing a feature though: the ability to make the same app window part of multiple app stacks.
Often times when I write .pages reports, I need to have the same .pages document on the screen together with either the web browser or the Preview app, to be able to get content for my .pages report.
This kind of workflow is very easy to setup on windows, where you can split screen and have multiple taskbars (which is the equivalent of multiple stage managers).

So why not put the Pages window, the browser window and the Preview window all in one App Set. Then set "Show windows from an application" to "One at a time." Then you can bring the browser window or Preview window to the front as needed.

Thanks for the updated indepth video on Stage Manager. Your video was what made me try out the Beta and I REALLY loved the new window manager. Video was a good review of the setting itself as well as it’s benefits.
