Susie works for the Oxford English Dictionary and is a real etymologist.
Because one of the games involves finding words, she was hired for "Countdown" to have an expert who could confirm / deny the validity of words. A "referee" for the word game.
And Rachel Riley is absolutely amazing at mental arithmetic for the numbers game. She usually nails the answer every time.

Your duty isn't to overpay your tax, its to pay least possible tax based on the laws. If anything its often those who wouldn't be deemed rich who are worst with it as they take an income that they don't even declare, what the rich people do is they investment into something which means tax isn't due on that money so you pay less. You only pay tax if when that investment is cashed in you have made more than 12k in profit from it. What was happening with the rich is top accountancy firms and banks had schemes where people would invest in a company and they would make less than 12k a year profit from that investment so they would pay no tax, so they may invest a 100k into say a film and make back 110k off that investment and that whole £110k would be tax free. It wasn't illegal, the rich people putting money in them were often not aware there was anything shady to it and it took HMRC to refine the rules and then basically guilt people into paying the tax on it voluntarily to prevent going through a court case that would be bad PR.
It's nowhere near as big a thing these days though, infact the country losses more from the non-rich people, the likes of delivery drivers, waiters waitresses who don't declare their tips, workman who take cash in hand and don't declare it etc etc. So many of the people who sit there complaining about the rich

Countdown normally has 2 contestants who play each other. The game consists of picking 9 letters and finding the longest word you can out of those 9 letters. After 3 rounds of letters, they have the numbers game where they pick 6 numbers and they can ask for big numbers 25, 50, 75, 100 and small numbers from 1 - 10. They have to use the numbers they choose to get to the same randomly selected number the computer throws up. These rounds repeat and a final 9 letter scrambled word( Conundrum round) has to solved within 30 seconds. All rounds have a clock counting down hence the title of the show. Suzi Dent is a lexacographer. She checks that all words that are given are spelt correctly and that they are contained in the Oxford English dictionary. For example we may use words everyday but they are not necessarilly in the Oxford English Dictionary. You need her because often people will come up with words that nobody has heard of because they may be scientific etc. 8 out of 10 cats does countdown has basically exactly the same format except they have panel teams who are comedians. I hope this helps .

8 out of 10 Cats is a show on its own as is Countdown however in 2012 Channel 4 decided to do a Mash Up night for charity and they mixed these two shows together along with loads of others. None of the others stuck however this went down an absolute storm and became a huge success. The 3 main comedians on the show (Jimmy Carr, Jon Richardson and the late Sean Lock) are all brilliant and the way they managed to blend seamlessly in with the Mathematician Rachel Riley & Lexicographer Susie Dent just worked perfectly from the start. Susie Dent used to proof read and check the origins of words that make it into the official English Oxford Dictionary and is a self proclaimed nerd when it comes to words.

The one about Berk, it's an insult usually used to call someone stupid, not very common but generally considered quite harmless. But Susy explains that it's actually cockney rhyming slang, which works by using a phrase that rhymes with the word, but just using the first word. More easily explained, a common one is using the world "apples" to mean "stairs". This comes from the phrase "apples and pears", as pears rhymes with stairs.
It turns out Berk is actually short for Berkeley hunt, which is rhyming slang for the c word, so it turns out it's actually much more rude than most people think!

Dr. Susie Dent lives in Oxford. She has association with the compliers of the Oxford English Dictionary. The joke you had difficulty understanding is to do with Rhyming slang. Cocknies started this but now most of Britain is aware. Some of the classics are "trouble and strife" for wife. "Ruby Murray" for curry, "dog and bone" for phone. So a sentence might go as follows, " I got my trouble on the dog and said don't cook tonight babe, we will go out for a ruby". So, back to what Dr.Dent said. British people use the term "Berke" as an term of abuse for others they don't like without realising that "Berke" is a foreshortening of the phrase "Berkeley Hunt",which rhymes with a certain "C" word.

Countdown was the first programme on Channel 4 when it started, before which UK had just BBC 1 & 2 and ITV and they shut down part of the day, so it is well remembered, as was the first host, the late Richard Whiteley, who was always known for an unfortunate clip from my local TV with a ferret that you should check out.
Countdown had been trialed previously on Yorkshire TV which was the local ITV station.
The show was one if those taken over by comedians for the day, which in this form was so popular they made it a regular. The numbers and letter experts were kept, acting like straight guys mostly, but other comments have given details already.

8:30 Rhyming slang means they take the rude word they mean, rhyme it to a phrase, and then shorten the phrase to a single word - and that word substitutes for the rude one. Susie was explaining the British word "berk" is rhyming slang, short for "Berkeley hunt", and 'hunt' rhymes with a particularly rude word used more over there than here. The joke being that, since she knows the origin of "berk", Susie calling Jimmy that means she's actually been calling him a c**t this whole time.
If you ever hear a British person use "bottle" in a colloquial way ("he bottled that"), that's another example: bottle is short for 'bottles and glass' which rhymes with "ass" (or "arse" in their case).

So Calling someone a berk is short for Berkley Hunt and hunt rhymes with cunt, so calling someone a berk is slang for calling them a cunt. The dog and bone is slang for the phone but when using cockney rhyming slang you'd only ask for someone to pass you the dog meaning you want them to pass you the phone, you wouldn't ask them to pass you the dog and bone.

thanks m🎱 crude and crass but funny as hell, a very dry humour observational sarcasm is his trademark a VERY British humour, I've live offshore for 25 years now but that humour, Sean, like Billy Connolly and Al Murray, Russell Howard are the antithesis of the irreverent British humour, not as subtle at the two Ronnies, but we can all get away with alot more these days

Susie Dent was saying that 'Berk' is a shortened form of the cockney rhyming slang term 'Berkshire hunt'. RUclips policies prevent me writing exactly what the cockney rhyming slang means so if you google 'cockney rhyming slang Berkshire hunt' you will get the answer.

      Berkeley Hunt, not Berkshire.
The first part of Berkshire is pronounced like 'bark'.

@@mercurialgecko3409 Oh, of course, you can absolutely call someone a 'berkshire hunt' or even a 'berkshire' to mean the same thing, but the word 'berk' isn't pronounced the same way, it's short for 'berkeley'.
But yeah, regardless, the 'hunt' part is the crux of the insult here!
You can usually figure out most rhyming slang if you know the context. (In this case, what's an offensive word that rhymes with hunt?)

Jimmy Carr was "caught" _avoiding_ tax, which is perfectly legal. Tax _evasion_ is a crime.
Also, I think Susie Dent's accent is what's known as RP (Received Pronunciation), which is the neutral english accent that doesn't actually belong to a specific geographical area.

I'm not sure how much you know about this show..... Countdown and 8 out of 10 Cats are very different shows. Countdown has been going since 1982, Cats first aired in 2005. In 2012 Cats did a Countdown special (6 ep I think) and it was a huge success so they continued doing it.

Jimmy is one of the few hosts who seem to encourage guests to roast him back. His accountant suggested the tax avoidance scheme, when the Revenue said it was illegal he repaid the money and apologised. The audience for the show doubled the day after the apology
