- The 2023 BMW M4 CSL ($166,500 starting in Canada, $140,895 starting in the US) is both exclusive and expensive - meaning expectations are high. Limited to only 1000 units, and with a price tag that lands you in some pretty serious waters among competitors, this ultra-lightweight, beefed-up, track-focused M4 aims to stand out from the crowd and honour the legendary CSL nameplate.
It has 40 more horsepower and weighs 239 lb less than the current generation M4 Competition. It also has a stiffer chassis and no rear seats for extra weight savings. This review nails most people’s thoughts - the M4 CSL is just not special enough. Limited in production numbers doesn’t make it more special, it just makes it rarer and appeals to the people that look at cars as investments. It’s like playing Pokémon red/blue and finding a wild Porygon - rare, but no one wants one to fight with. My money easily goes to a used R8, or saving a bit more for a new winged 992 GT3 which is what I’ve opted for as a G80 M3 owner. Amazing video as usual!
Problem is actually buying a 992 gt3 or a gt4 rs ... you wont find one for less than $250k on the used market. This kinda feels like the m4 gts and that car still only sells for around MSRP.

I agree to an extent. You have to think about who its marketed for the M4 GTS was did do well because it honestly wasn't that far from an M4C all they did was give it a wing and added distilled water to pump the power which a simple flash would do to a normal M4C. M4 CSL however has a weight advantage and its for the track. Lastly how many people even track their track cars? Not many so just like you said the people who buy this will probably buy em and store em.

In Australia, the price is said to be $303,900 AUD. That equates to approx. $193,000 USD.(before on the road costs).
At $140k I would say there’s alternatives that look far better. This is touching super car territory for what’s essentially a souped up sedan.
Unless you just want a sedan this is in C8 Z06 territory. That price is bonkers.
I would honestly take a Gt500 carbon fiber track pack over this and save money.🤷🏻♂️
well its reasonably priced , its a little less expensive than a amg gtr and a little slower, and its even less expemnsive than 911 gt3 and a little more slower, but obviously if price is the only thing u look at than u can buy the cheap alternatives like z06 which is ;likely faster than all of these but manufactured at a lesser quality
For that money I want it to look like 140k not some kind of Korean import with aftermarket exterior mods.

I've owned three BMW 4-series, so far, and there's no way I'd pay almost $150k for another one. For that money I'd buy a new Corvette AND a Cybertruck - that covers utility, style and performance. Nothing against people who are willing to pay this, but man, again, I've owned three 4-series, and the entire lure of them was that you got an awesome looking and performing car for like $10k more than a Mustang GT or a Camaro SS. When you're talking like $80-90k more, that's pretty insane. But hey, it's not my money, so spend it however you want, I'll still love seeing these on the road.

Lmao the C8 Z06 is lower to the ground than the M4 CSL, lighter, better aero, also C8 looks a million times better than a big 3700 pound car. Thats why Thatdudeinblue said he will NEVER compare a Corvette to a Mustang. Not even the same weight class. A M4 has no business trying to compete on a track with cars that weigh less than 3500lbs. I imagine a C6 Z06 with todays modern tires will corner better than a new M4😂
@@GrimReaper1675 as an owner of a C6 Z06 with PS4 S tires on it, you might be right.
What I can say is the C6 z06 is VERRRRRY twitchy when getting aggressive through corners with t/c and s/c off. Even with the modern tires, it almost needs to break traction to feel safe. It might corner as well, but I’m sure the M4 is more confidence inspiring.

@@GrimReaper1675 new z06 weighs about the same as this car. The lightest spec that Caranddriver tested of new z06 weighed 3666 pounds, about the same as this car.
C8Z will walk the CSL on a track. 345s on the back of that Z.

2008 BMW 335i. N54 engine. Total investment including purchase and mods 22k USD. O-60 all day in 4 seconds. Best time 3.425 seconds. Beat that performance for the money. M sport suspension also. Handles so well.

I would definitely go for the m5 cs over this cause the m5 cs isn’t that much slower around a track but is so much more practical and would be a better car for me cause i would want to daily drive it. The m5 cs also looks a lot better.
You know, if you want practicality, it’s BMW M5/M5 Competition. Much better car overall for less money. And much more comfort.
I believe there is a huge issue with that V8 engine, obviously there are no official reports, so I may be wrong. But I have heard about multiple S63 engine failure. I did not buy M5C simply of the S63, even though the performance must be amazing the fear of the engine dying on me is too much for me :D

I would like to see what a G80 CompXD would do around the track.... For comparative purposes, to see where it stacks up... I absolutely love my G80CXD, it goes from Housewife to Stripper with a push of a button. One minute I can have my two kiddos comfortably in the backseats and a load of groceries in its spacious trunk, and the next minute Im gapping C8 Vettes when I go back to the grocery store alone because I likely forgot something on the list... The G80CXD is the greatest practical sports car, perhaps ever, and for what you receive, I still think its High Value, even if you are unlucky and have to pay a massive markup. The potential of the S58 is just mind blowing. With just a few basic upgrades(Intake, Downpipes, Exhaust, & Tuning Module), you have 680WHP in the arsenal waiting for an opportunity to gap whatever pulls up beside you as they likely underestimate your saloon..
This is my first BMW, and the quality & versatility of the car has definitely made me a massive fan of the brand. I could not be happier that I got lucky and upgraded to a G80 from a G42, after a rich kid knocked up his GF and his parents forced him to forfeit his perfectly optioned G80CXD to marry her. I didnt have to wait a year, and I didnt have to pay a markup, but knowing what I do, I would gladly do so for the opportunity to own one. Living in the NE, Im partial to AWD, and while it may be a bit heavier, I think that is something you can easily mitigate if you are really wanting to push the car to its limits.
The performance is definitely there on this one and that's probably the best I have ever heard the modern turbocharged BMW inline 6 sound from the factory. I wish my M340i sounded as good. Too bad about that price tag though!
The M4 CSL for me it maybe cool but still pales in comparison to Corvette C7 Stingray.

@@smar1208 a corvette would destroy this on a real track that’s over 2 miles long. This track is too small for the viper and corvette
get an MPPSK kit, intake, and downpipe. The B58 sounds better than the S58 because the S58 has two turbos instead of just one like the B58.
@@dempseydulaney1 or the f82 with MPE or and M4 GTS (which essentially has an MPE) probably beats the CSL by miles due to modern regulations.
Are we not going to talk about the fact the side profile looks more like a 2011 Accord Coupe than the precision tuned German masterpiece she is. I do appreciate the boys hitting on some of its cheap aspects and lackluster comforts given the shocking sticker.
All of her flaws aside I love her front and rear fascias. Stunning... Use these fascias designs forms across the fleet.

Thomas, I absolutely have to say this, you have my highest respect for always being so passionate AND remaining impartial. This car must have been eyes watering for someone who truly loves BMW: the M4 CSL seems to be exactly what a real M car should be, today.

Except you can't possibly get one for $140k. There was one on the floor when I picked up my 340 this past weekend, and they wanted $50k over list. The sales guys were laughing about people calling and offering $20-25k over list.
Tbf, they're Canadian so they get everything for MSRP

I was just offered one locally for $5k over which I didn’t take. The value will drop just like the GTS did when used.

Great review! Fun watching you slide a car around and talk about the non-adjustable race buckets. Cool car but for the money it's neither an amazing track car (compared to others in its price range) nor an amazing road car but it is quite rare. IMHO I'd rather focus my cash on a 'pedestrian' M4 C if I needed to stay in BMW or go to a Porsche GT4RS or even a used GT3RS (more money).
Seeing this car it kinda reminds me off the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm version. Would be amazing to see a drag race with both cars and see how well they stack up to each other on a track test

Thats exactly the car it should be compared to. Throw the Jaguar Project 8, even the CLK63 AMG Black Series into it. And leave price out of it. Its just a specific type of car.

I have to say that the front looks better with the sportier appearance. It just looks more apropriate on the car this way. This is definitely my favourite of the M3/M4 family.

My favorite car I had is still e46 M3 CSL. That sound air going in was really special for CSL. Wish I can get this also.

Yes there is a 5,3 point harness with two ,3 strings for under your arms aroung your chest to streap on your sternum so that those wall-hitting breaks don't make you break against a standard 3 point belt.

The awful exterior and overall lack of "specialness" really puzzle me. I can't see anyone preferring this over a 911 Carrera S let alone C8 Z06. A Mustang Mach 1 also is not only visually more appealing and a great track tool as well, it also has the beautiful V8 noise to accompany the drive. Did I mention that the 718 GT4 resides in that price range too? A track focused, mid engine, naturally aspirated Porsche????
well its faster than a carrera s , and a mach 1 or gt500 around the ring, and i dont think anyone looking for a european sportscar would would ever consider z06 even though its pretty good.The gt4rs is best value for money , its faster than alot of more expensive cars but then again comparing cars based on their prices is stupid

The Carrera S is much more prestigious, people will ask what you drive and when you say a 911 they're like "Oh, very nice car. How much did it cost? 120K? Decent price".
When you tell them you bought this they'll say "A BMW? For 140K? Is it the M8? No? M4? For that money!? At least it has to look goo...oh my God..."
The Mach 1 is much more special, especially here in Europe. It looks gorgeous, has the nice V8 and handles like you wouldn't expect. The 718 GT4 openly competes with the M4 CS as a track car of similar price range of a german manufacturer. So it absolutely makes sense to compare them. And in that comparison the brand new M4 CS can't compete with the GT4 RS which is a bit older too. As for the Z06, people will look at the Corvette being much more desirable than any BMW, especially here in Europe where Corvettes are legendary and rare cars anyway. Not to mention with such an engine

I am thrilled to see you two back out on your home track. We need more lap times.
We especially need some times for a Lucid, any Lucid. People rave about the handling (and I love how mine handles on twisty mountain roads) but reviews don't count w/o lap times. Hopefully a Sapphire will come and find you. I'll put in a word, for whatever that's worth. Not the ideal car for a short flat track, but let the chips fall where they may.
I will never own a BMW with that garish nose. Frankly, I find it insulting that this porcine snout is what they picture when they think of their customers. It's shocking, even more shocking than Thomas mistakenly choosing a Z06 and M5 over a GT4RS.

I have Black CSL on order and am Still waiting for mine to be built. I already have a 22 M3 Comp X drive so i can live with that on the daily. The CSL will be for Cota, Live 10 mins away from it. I agree though the price is hard to swallow especially when like you said in the review that you don't get a Cage. I'm still excited to drive it when it comes in though regardless!
I have no problem with the way it looks. In fact, I love the grill... other details are a little less popular with me, but not the grill. I'd give my eye teeth to drive this thing... you guys are spoiled. ;)
