  • Setting up a complete retro gaming system can be a bit tricky getting emulators, games and front ends all talking to each other. But using LaunchBox's automated installation wizards can turn this process into a few simple mouse clicks.
    Let me show you how to set up for consoles, arcade games and home computers.

    The ultimate step-by-step tutorial I was looking for. Very well done, easy to follow and a total hit. Thank you so much, really appreciate your time and effort to put this together. Side note: I started my IT journey back in the early 80s with a ZX Spectrum 16Kb, now I've successfully created my Retro gaming PC and getting the goose bumps already by browsing the ZX Spectrum game catalog with all their box arts, etc. Greetings from the West of Ireland ;)

    You have answered so many questions and I can't wait to come back to this video! I plan on getting a big external hard drive soon and when I do ill come back to set this up. I've already got a few emulators and games set up with some other programs to back up save data for actual hardware and rewriting save data for randomizers and other fun challenges. But what my end goal is, is to make my own version of the raspberry pi mini retro pc. A friend of mine has a projector and we're gonna team up

    Hello, I found your videos very helpful and I now have a Launchbox/Mame/Retroarch setup on my backup PC. Getting emulators and old arcade games to work was something I've been wanting to do for a while. It just seemed like too much of a hassle, but you made it easy. 😄
    I'm true old school, I played "Pong" style games in the mid 1970's and I was in High School when games like Asteroids and Space Invaders came out on Coin-Op. So now I get to play those same games from more than 40 years ago at home without the need for a pocket full of quarters. So a huge thanks to you!👍😁👍
    While I've got my Xbox controller to finally work on my "retro gaming" PC (Win7). I can't figure out how to get the mouse to work in the games. I'm thinking the mouse would be great for trackball type games, but in game my mouse doesn't do anything. I also can't figure out how to custom setup controller key bindings. I can get to the menus to adjust key bindings (Mame and Launchbox), but I have no clue how to set them up. What am I missing?
    Maybe a controller/custom key bindings video might be able to help us old geezers out. ;) Or... if you could at least give me some tips on how to get my mouse to work it would be awesome.😁👍

      Hi. That sounds like a good idea for a video. To use the mouse you need to enable it for the game in Mame itself - not LaunchBox. Find the Mame exe file in the LaunchBox emulators mame folder. That will start raw Mame. Find the game you want mouse support for, highlight it then double click the configure machine option at the bottom. Go to device mapping and set trackball to mouse. Make sure you save the configuration file. This enables the mouse as the trackball input for this one game. You can use the mouse for lightgun support etc in the same way.
      Go back to Launchbox and play the game. Press TAB to bring up the in game menu and then go to Inputs this machine. This is where you set up controller and keyboard mappings. Select the control you want to map and then just press or move the control you want to map to that input. e.g. in Missile Command you set the trackball analog X and Y by selecting e.g. X, then move you mouse left and right. You should see the mapping appear. Go through all the controls you need and you're good to go. These mappings are saved automatically so next time it will all be ready for you.
      Have Fun!

    I feel Batocera is a easier option. Also it uses screenscraper to get metadata and video previews which is a free service. Just flashing a usb key or SD card then copying your ROMs and bios files and running the scraper and you are done. Also it's self contained and boots into it.
    Good video none the less, I was curious as to how launchbox looked and what the setup was like.

    • @BytesNBits
      @BytesNBits  2 года назад +2

      Hi. LaunchBox (and RetroArch) should let you install the Atari console software by just importing the games using the import wizard. I think the home computer range are a bit harder to emulate and you need some BIOS ROMs. Sometimes you do need to use standalone emulators if RetroArch doesn't support a system, but these can be linked in to LaunchBox if required.
      Have a look at www.virtualdub.org/altirra.html and atari800.github.io/

    I have a pc made with Maximus Arcade. I make it long ago, 4 or 5 years. Take me some time to config as i like it.
    I have almost all the computers, consoles and Arcade i like (and i have, physically). I have some zx, msx and commodores.
    But for playing i like more the pc, because they are like treasures, and i do not like to OVERTOUCHING THE OLD ONES.
    And for the Arcade i was thinking to make my own arcade stick, but i generally have no time to take a PC keyboard and mutilate to be a new controls for the computer....
    I used Batocera, Launchbox and Hyperspin for pc, and Emuelec for an Android Box. I still like Maximus for pc. Is more obvious to config, and more complex, but the result are WAY BETTER. (FOR ME). And for android DIG.
    And for one case in particular. Retroarch, doesn't have for ZX the ZXSPIN, Spectaculator or ZEsarUX, and sometimes that a thing against Retroarch.

      First make sure that you've got the RetroArch core downloaded for the system you want to use. Make a note of which one you've downloaded. In LaunchBox make sure you check the manage emulator section for RetroArch. In the associated platforms section make sure the default emulator for your system is set to the core you downloaded. These settings all have to match.
      Some systems also need a BIOS ROM (mostly PlayStation and newer). If you still have no luck search for a Batocera full bios pack and install that. It should give you any files you're missing in one go.

      That's a strange one!!! Have you tried any other emulators to see if it's just the SNES? Usually the emulators pick up on your default Windows sound settings. I think you can override that in the RetroArch settings. Have a look in there to see where it's sending the sound.

Also install mods on some games?

      I haven't tried that but it should be OK. The save data files should be the same. Can you install RetroArch on a Chromebook? RetroArch is for emulating retro consoles and computers, not for launching more modern PC games so I don't think you'll get it to run the games you mention.

    • @BytesNBits
      @BytesNBits  Год назад

      You need to go into the Mame or other emulator setup and enable the display settings you want. LaunchBox is just a frontend to make accessing the games easier. You still have full versions of RetroArch and Mame running in the background. You can start the emulators outside of LaunchBox and do the setup there.

      Hi. Yes, it can act as a front end to the computer emulators and many people do set it up that way. I have to admit that I prefer to use stand alone emulators for home computers as they take a bit more setting up. LaunchBox etc. are great for consoles where there are no hardware / firmware options or different accessories to worry about. For the BBC micro I use the standalone BeebEm.

    there’s other ways for you to have retro gaming on your PC but lunchbox with big box is not a friendly users frontend and its not for everyone and it does not make it easy for anyone it does comes with trials and errors when you’re dealing with the free version and the paid version so please stop wasting your time with lunchbox with big box is not worth your time however, retro bat frontend requires no setups and only take less than five minutes of your time just simply drag and drop your favorite games and roms that you own into the retro bat rom directories and you’re good to go and it’s free so please stop using big box and try retro bat and it works on low end pc as well because with retro bat front end automatically will install the emulators and the requirements of your needs while big box does not do so the great thing about retro bat front end that you don’t have to do anything but start playing and enjoy

    The word retro refers to a style or design, not an age of something. If you play a retro game, you are playing a newer game that is in the style of an older style. So this real meaning of the word elimates near all games people think of as being 'retro'.

      It's a software platform in Windows that allows code to run inside the Windows system. You need to install it to allow Launchbox to work. Run the installer and it should offer to install it for you, or have a search and download it from the Microsoft website.
