Y'all talking about the cornrows, um, Stevie Wonder was rocking the look in the late 1970s. (His 1980 album, "Hotter Than July," shows him sporting them.) And, take a look at Peaches & Herb from 1979 to 1982. The "Peaches" of that era--Linda Greene--sported the style (check out performances for songs like "Reunited," "Shake Your Groove Thing" and "Roller-Skatin' Mate").
And, um, then there's always the legendary "10" herself--Bo Derek.

"Pretty Mess"? "Darling Nikki?" I don't think I've ever suggested either of those. 😄
Amber, a lot of girls and women had a head full of beads on their braids like hers when I was little. When I was around eight years old and had hair down to my waist, my mom put a _lot_ of beads in my braids. They were heavy, and I only had about half of what this singer has.
I put a few in my niece's braids last summer and she loved it, but I didn't know if she would, so I only put four on each braid. I'll be braiding it again and adding a lot more. 🙂

The dynamic with Rick James and them was much like Prince and Vanity 6 and the Time…mainly a vehicle for his music to be released via other artists. That said, their debut had some nice slow grooves too…check out MUSICAL LOVE. Also, other notable artists to rock the beaded braids…PEACHES AND HERB, A TASTE OF HONEY, STEVIE WONDER, MOTHER’S FINEST

When my husband and I got married, our DJ refused to play this during the reception. (We were in the Bible belt at the time). I wanted to tell him, how do you think our relationship started? Lol... It's ok, because we had Prince songs, Madonna, Alice in Chains, and many other artists. So every year on our anniversary I post this video on social media, and wish my husband a good one! 😁❤️

JoJo is the lead singer. Her real name is Joanne McDuffie and she had that perfect vocal tone to sing Rick's stuff. You can really hear it on All Night Long.

Amber nailed it on the "Rick James" hairstyle on that singer. But Donna Summer was rocking the same hairstyle in the 70's. This song still rocks after all these years! Where's Jody Whatley?

Big huge smile on this grandma's face. I instantly remembered all the words and those harmonics. I am moving kids. Every day brings me back. The Mary Jane Girls are going to be in my head the rest of the day. Listen to that guitar strumming, so much a part of the 70 s and 80 s instrumentals. Check out "La Chic" as well. You will see a guitarist doing a section on the guitar that is part of so many artists catalogue up to the current era. I will not give his name. He got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the last five years for his contribution as a producer. His initials are N. R. There's your clues. Check out " La Chic". So much fun. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

You should definitely react to the song "Nasty Girl" by the group Vanity 6. This girl group was put together by Prince. He wrote and produced all of their stuff. This song was a huge hit for them. Rick James and Prince were kind of enemies in the 80s. So when Prince started a girl group that had success, Rick James then started the Mary Jane Girls. They were always trying to best each other. RIP to both legends.

    J. commenting on how "freaky deaky" this song is - I wonder if he even is taking the line "in my house" at face value
    OR
if he realizes what - in my "house" REALLY means. (It WAS put together by Rick James after all!)
On 2nd thought - I am SURE he hasn't figured it out or the blush would be RED instead of pink & he wouldn't be able to look at the video AT ALL!
(Oh, how I wish I could have seen this reaction with BOTH J. & Amber figuring out what "in my HOUSE" REALLY MEANT!!) 😆
