    I personally would not put floor under casting deck. You might not think you will get caught in the rain but you will, there is always that one day. Then you have water down there trying to rot the wood and if it’s not sealed good it will get heavy. Then it starts to smell too. You want to keep it lite, less stress on motor, you are going to be adding a lot of weight by the time your done. You could put a mat or something like that instead. If you want to clean out with shop vac you will have to remove the wood floor and foam. If you use shop vac remember to label your foam so it goes back in same spot. You may not think it will need to be cleaned out but it just does over time. Even if you seal the wood that moisture between that and foam it just starts to smell and you don’t want that.
    When trying to make straight cuts I would use a straight edge and hold your blade against it.
    Also cardboard is your friend, use it for templates to fit anything before you start cutting stuff up. I would rather waste cardboard than important material.
    Now you have some framing in the way too. Can you get one piece in there or would you have to make two pieces. After casting deck is on would you be able to replace that floor if need be ? When I installed stuff in my boat I tried to think about trying to repair or replace stuff if need be.
    Good luck man !

      Good advice Richard. The sub floor is in already. I'll keep that stuff in mind though. If the foam becomes a problem I'll take it out later. I'll need two pieces of plywood for casting deck.

    Why add the foam? It doesn't do anything for floatation unless the boat is full of water. I feel like that foam is just going to degrade and smell from normal water that gets in. Closed cell spray foam probably would have been a better option

    • @BassBrothersFishingDMV
      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  4 года назад +1

      Hopefully it never gets full of water but you add foam just in case. Im not sure what closed cell spray is but I'll look into it.

    • @thereelaccountant9246
      @thereelaccountant9246 4 года назад +1

      I think that is incorreect. If that foam is pressed into the bottom of that boat and doesn't move, if that part of the boat is underwater, it will still have it's buoyancy. It's why the new kayaks are so hard to flip, they have big foam pieces in the sides.

    • @lukeormsbee7851
      @lukeormsbee7851 3 года назад

      I was wondering the same thing

    • @hammer9856
      @hammer9856 3 года назад +2

      If I remember correctly the foam he's using is "closed cell foam" and doesn't absorb water, it is also mildew and rot resistant. It's not too different than the pour foam that many boat builds use. But in this case it will be much easier to remove if need arises. The extra buoyancy is in case the boat begins to fill with water so it doesn't sink to the bottom and can still be saved. Salvaging a boat off the bottom is not cheap or easy.

    I use pink foam in my boat also but has anyone performed a buoyancy test to see how much water weight it would hold if the boat undergoes water? Just curious not questioning the process at all.

    Then, or now did you consider pour foam for under the sub floor? Also, did you do any additional mods to the drainage under, or above the subfloor?

    • @BassBrothersFishingDMV
      @BassBrothersFishingDMV  4 года назад +1

      I did consider pour foam but didn't want the extra work it would take to prep the boat for pour foam. Also I've seen how hard it is to remove the pour foam and wanted something a little easier to remove if needed. As far as drainage, no additional work down. The water flows out the boat well from below the foam. I accidentally forgot to plug the boat recently and checked for residual water after a few days and there was none.

      I'm thinking the idea of foam covering the bottom makes perfect sense. Say, your moving 25 mph in your 14 foot jon boat and hit a tree stump that puts a 3" hole in the bottom of your boat. Water will contact that foam & keep it from sinking now that the boats full of water, barring you don't have half a ton of weight in the boat to begin with. We want to be able to sit in that boat full of water & it still not sink. I think that is why we are required to carry paddles. Last resort safety measures is all it is. Do I make any sense?
