  • In this video I review the three parts that make up the Boss RC-10R: the drum machine, the looper, and the way they interact. This pedal fails on EVERY SINGLE one of those.

    I have it and I am delighted with it, the batteries are not the best and the sound is somewhat artificial but it records perfect audio and for the price €200 if you find it on sale it seems like a spectacular option to me, I don't know other models and the What I use for the most part is not as a looper or drum machine, I use it together with the Moisés app, removing guitars and recording on top of it... it is not its function but the recording quality amazed me and in my case for the tribute project what am I doing, it's going great

  • @Champ114

    I think we couldn't compare RC-10R with Beat Buddy. It's there for a different reason. RC-10R is a looper with rhythm which can help player create a loop with drum. It might not the best drum sound to you, but it help. On the other hand, Beat buddy is a pure drum machine. You use it in a different ways.

    From what I understand from the documentation, you can add new rhythm parts if you connect it to a computer and use software.

      He didn't even use its built in sync feature so I doubt he tried anything else.

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx 4 года назад +1

      @@startrekmike (EDIT: the reason for the partial syncing is indeed the RC-10R's not supporting System Realtime start and stop messages) As a matter of fact, I just spent a few hours syncing the RC-10R with Roland JD-Xi with a MIDI cable. It ... kind of sort of works to some extent, namely, the RC-10R gets the tempo from the JD-Xi, but it doesn't align its beats with the incoming MIDI clock. :( What kind of "sync" is that ... ok, the tempo stays the same and I can align the recording by ear so that it sounds in time, but if I _stop_ the loop, it's practically impossible to start it in time again. And of course using the built-in rhythms in external sync mode is out of the question, because it doesn't ... well, SYNC. It doesn't seem to work the other way either: the JD-Xi cannot start it's playback on the RC-10R's command, because the RC-10R does not send MIDI system realtime start/stop commands, it only sends clock. However, I was able to find a way to use the two together, to some extent. If I record everything from scratch and don't STOP, it's all right. Maybe with a MIDI pedalboard and clever programming and it's possible to rig the RC-10R to be a component in a semi-working system. The cost is way more than the RC-10R's price though. ;)

    • @startrekmike
      @startrekmike 4 года назад +1

      @@yzimsx I get the impression that the midi functionality in the pedal is very much geared towards working with a midi pedalboard. Perhaps the idea is that those who already have such a setup can easily integrate the pedal but those that don't have that setup probably are not going to worry about midi integration at all anyway.

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx 4 года назад

      @@startrekmike Yes, there is a big array of CC to command mappings. But not supporting system realtime start/stop messages is strange, and the basic syncing start/stop and particularly the switch track 1/2 functions are pretty bad in the RC-10R currently. A significant firmware update is needed. Anyway, it's just one pedal, not a "one box fulfills all your dreams" product. It has a nice small form factor, but a Ditto X4 would have been better for me and cheaper too. Anyway, I'm going to use the RC-10R for now.

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx 4 года назад

      Small update: the reason why the RC-10R does not know where the beats coming from the MIDI Clock pulse are ... the system realtime clock 0xF8 message is only a 24 ticks-per-beat pulse, and it does not say which of the ticks is on the beat. That information needs to be carried over via some other message ... namely start/stop, which the RC-10R does not support. :( So there has to be a MIDI message translator of some kind. I'll have to add more components to the setup.

    I have lost loops due to drive tempo change and turning my loop into garble! One thing, it doesn't synch after you create the loop. You find the beat you want, then hold the drum button for 2 seconds, it turns blue on the indicator. Then you are sync to began your loop.
    what I don't like is if you create the synced loop, you can't change the tempo as it will ruin the loop. you have to redo the loop. its like speeding up or slowing down a recording.

    I don't understand the needs and desires. If you want a drum machine get a drum machine like an MPC and even better a FORCE. It does the same thing but you make your own beats. I thought that the reason people use loopers is for like live performance stuff and practice? Having a sequencer workstation would be better in my opinion if you're trying to do some complex live stuff. You can buy midi packs if your not good a drum programming the MPC stuff. It would be hella better than a beat buddy.

    • @UpstandingCitiz3n
      @UpstandingCitiz3n  2 года назад

      The BeatBuddy is for playing live (at home or on stage), so very different from a typical drum machine. I would argue the BeatBuddy should be called something else, like "a drummer pedal" or something

    • @Ast3rixMusic
      @Ast3rixMusic 2 года назад +1

      @@UpstandingCitiz3n The only thing I don't like about this pedal is that the patterns sound like the ones from the DR Rhythm 880 which is like 20 years old. I think Boss should have really looked at the drum side differently. It should be more dynamic and more modern. Also since it is advertised as a drum focused machine. There should have been more features to allow you to change the patterns and sounds.

    Hi, thanks for pointing out the flaws with this pedal. I agree with everything you said and I definitely won’t be buying this. I don’t think your being harsh at all as some of the comments are suggesting. The drum loops are shockingly bad. Boss must think that people are stupid to buy this rubbish. Could you suggest a good reliable two track looper ? I don’t care about having drums and silly fx included. I’m just looking for something with high quality audio and on board storage. I’ve checked out many two track loopers but it seems they all have issues with something or another bugs functionality. Thanks again and i would really appreciate your advice. I’ve been literally going loopy 😊 in my search.

      Honestly, the best looper on the market is the Aeros Loop Studio. It can do 36 tracks, but it also has 2x2 mode, which is two song parts each with two parallel tracks. I use 2x2, it's so simpler yet so powerful. Especially now with the latest firmware release, the Aeros is crazy. Check it out :)

      @@UpstandingCitiz3n Thanks for your reply. I was checking out the Aeros but i read a few reviews which said the firmware has a lot of problems with things not working as should be. Do you have any experience like that ? I am also a bit concerned with Aeros that i would have to continously look at the screen distracting me from my performance. I would be interested in your thoughts. Thank You

    • @UpstandingCitiz3n

      @@stevieross4415 There used to be firmware issues but they fixed them. I think they released the product too early at first. When I emailed Singular Sound support to return it, they said that they'll extend my money back guarantee until 60 days after all the promised features were completed. With a guarantee like that, I kept it -- and I'm glad I did! There's really nothing that comes close. Even the Headrush which is like $1000 can't match the Aeros in sound quality. As for the screen, it's not required that you look at it. Like any looper, you can go on the sound. But the UX on the Aeros is really beautiful and it makes looping so much easier. I really can't stress enough how much thought they must have put into the Aeros UX. I definitely recommend checking it out. You can always return it if you don't like it. And if you get it from Singular Sound's site, they'll pretty much extend you money back period until every last feature is released

Thanks again and I’ll let you know my thought once I’ve got the Aeros

    Maddening!!!!!
    How can this be a common feature on previous models and then be taken out when it’s user naturally expected a critical basic RBC to be carried forward?????
