Thank you so much for this. I have been going nuts for days (not much of a trip, admittedly) trying to get two tracks to play in series, verse/chorus/verse. You demonstrated it to the point where lo and behold, it works! Others have talked about it, but you put the video of your actual foot switch actions up and that made all the difference.
I have been playing for a long, long time... my 66 Strat was a 16th birthday present, for crying out loud... and I think your videos are terrific and highly entertaining. Jam on!

      Hi Adrian
Yeah, this was a little tough to figure out.
      Under Memory:
      Play mode: Single
      Single Change: Loop End
      Track Change: Series
Record your verse or part on Track 1
Do the other part on Track 2
While playing either track back, at any time during the verse, click the Track Select button and then the Rec/Play button. When the playback reaches the end of the track you're on, it will go right into the other. Same thing to bring it back. You don't have to worry about timing, just somewhere near the point where you want to trigger the change.
When recording, it obviously helps to play right past the cutoff point a tiny bit so there won't be any dead air, so to speak, when the tracks switch.
I hope I've explained this well enough. It was a bear learning it, but good old Eystch got me pointed in the right direction.

    • @anthonykenny1320
      @anthonykenny1320 Год назад

To get the two tracks to play in time you have to ensure that you start the second track at the end of the first and end the second track at the end of the first as well
To do this you have have the display on “two tack position”
To get to that *menu *setup by pressing memory/value once scroll to 2TRACKPOS
then when recording on second track you must watch the screen and visually line the two tracks up
      I hope that’s clear
It’s very annoying and inconvenient and unlike any other Boss looper ( and I have had them all) but the difference between 16 and 32 bit recording is worth it

Thanks henning for this ULTIMATE review 😊 this video is very useful !
If Boss is reading… here’s my 2cents as final customer :
    • I’m using it with a 9v powerbank…works perfect.
    • I have bought the expensive boss midi cable, quality cable but like you said, it’s way too expensive !
    • Rythm section : i would like to have more rock/metal/pop & dance patterns ! The additional rythms available at « Boss tone central » are useless : they take the place of 1 looper track ! I would expect that we can import and add more rythm inside the rc500, not instead of a looper track…
    • External midi pedalboard is mandatory if you want to use all the parameters : so add 150/200 € to the rc500 pricing…
    • You have an xlr mic input for vocals … i would like in a future update to have the vocoder/robot/autotune effect like the RC505 !!!!
At the end, I’m happy with this rc500, but it needs a lot of menu diving, and it’s not always easy to locate some parameters. But quality is there and when fully extended with midi , it's a beast.

You can actually get male TRS to 5 pin MIDI female connectors that allow you to use any midi cable, and they’re not at all expensive. I’ve used them with my Boss RC5 and they work perfectly

14:15 The reason BOSS stipulates specific model BOSS adapters is because *in some cases* some pedals draw more current than others. For pedals that draw a lot of current - say, one that pulls .5A, using a low current-rated 9v DC adapter - say, one rated for 200mA might work....for a few minutes....until the adapter catches fire. You need to respect current draw, and be careful when ignoring those adapter requirements. They're not always BS.

    Very good video.
I spent a few hours learning RC-500 (during February 2024) and returned it for several reasons... having to use the output jack to turn it on, having to disconnect the output jack to turn it off, no way to set rhythm volume globally, output cannot be used for headphones unless we like everything only in one ear. Two times of a rhythm coming through my speakers at volume level 100 pissed me off. It seems like it should be $55 not $350. It reminds me of little Coleco games in the 1970's and 1980's.

Hello and thank you for this video. I have used the RC-30 live for three years and really enjoyed it. I upgraded to the RC-500 about a year ago. I am still not confident enough to use the RC-500 in a live situation because it is too flakey in the garage. The learning curve on the RC-500 is very long. All the midi capabilities are lost on me because I don’t use a midi. The flaw in the RC-500 is that it is designed for people sitting in the studio doing stuff in a controlled environment with no consequences for unforeseen errors. All these parameters and settings and not knowing for sure whether the setting is “system” or “Memory” introduces surprises on stage. I’m beginning to think that the 32 bit upgrade alone does not compensate for the lack of practicality in using this thing live. I’ll keep plugging away, but really, the amount of time and energy dedicated to learning the RC-500 is detracting from my live show. I’m about ready to sell my RC-500 and throw in the towel. Parameters and flexibility is great, but obviously, the RC-500 was not designed for live shows. In live shows, you don’t have time for changing things. You don’t have space for screw ups. Everything has to work right, every time, or you do the famous “looper face plant.” Indeed, I did a few with the RC-30 in the beginning, but the RC-500 introduces a whole new vista of potential “looper face plants” because it is: a) too complicated; b) too difficult to program and operate; and c) possibly flakey? I was very excited about the percussion features of the RC-500, but have given up on that as well. It’s too unpredictable! Best, Marc Roberts

An RC 30 user here for almost 10 years. I was looking around for an update. I have bought the RC 505 and now the RC 500 and I must say for my kind of playing both of them they lost what the RC 30 have. RC 30 has this "Instant" factor that all those new loopers hasn't. Use it with an external controller and it does what it supposed to. In the other hand both 505 & 500 have better sound quality but the new workflow with the menus and all that glitchy things makes the creativity go away sometimes. I know that if you learn the new workflow its gonna be instant again it's just that I like the simplicity the RC 30 offers. Also I would like to stress that out, RC30 is out of the market right now and soon you wont be able to buy one from a store. I think its gonna become a vintage gimmicky item that its price in 10 to 20 years from now will rise. So keep it somewhere safe! I will also buy a second one hehe

I totally know what you mean. I had the RC-30 when I first started out and then moved to the RC-2, which the RC-2 had better drum sounds. What I loved about the both of them was, that you could at a live gig play on the fly and everything synced as I had strummed with the Auto Rec. I'm guna have to re-train what I knew to adapt to this pedal as the 32bit sounds awesome.

59:49 Is this because you are recording on track 2 and that track 2 was set to 4 measures? And then adjusted the tempo to your playing because you ended the recording before the 4 measures within the set tempo? This would be awesome because it means you can set track 1 to 1 measure and track 2 to 16 or whatever. And it means you could record a one measure loop on track 1 (without needing to have the metronome stuck in your ear) and let that first recording set the tempo. I am hoping that it works like that indeed!

Seriously nice work, Eytschpi42! After listening to your review, I am thinking of a decision tree in the form of a series of questions, The first for me being “do I want to record in serial or in parallel?” Each question sets Up prompts or reminders, things to keep in mind when pursuing a particular path. Probably, just by doing this I will get my head around the unit (coming tomorrow evening!), But I suspect it will help to catch the unexpected settings while I am learning. It reminds me of setting up PA for a live show: place the equipment, then run power, then run audio, then normalize gain- hey, wait! Why is there no sound? Ah, I left the break switch engaged. Why do I always forget that? The advantage of Boss loopers is their weakness: The unit is capable of setting up multiple scenarios, but because of that the unit requires setup for each scenario. It reminds me of the Apollo 11 moon landing: forgetting to turn off one switch overloaded The computers, throwing them into an otherwise unnecessary abort/continue decision. And somehow that reminds me of this meme: commas save lives! “Let’s eat, grandma.” Versus “Let’s eat grandma!” Enjoying your humor and your pets. Thanks for all your hard work on this.

Hi, thanx for this very interesting video. I have a question about using a backing track and play over it in a special way. Don't know if what I want, is possible. Situation is as follows. I got a backing track of only the piano track of the song Feel from Robbie Williams. In the middle and in the end of this song is a part in were I (play the guitar) have to play two parts in the same time. First a riff and then the riff and a wah piece both together. So I thought this can be done by the RC500. But what I forget was that the backing track is playing the whole song and there only twice a part were I would use the looper. So, is it possible to let the looper play the backing track on Track 1, and if we are in the middle, I can switch the looper on to record on track 2 and then record the riff. After the riff, I let loop the riff and can play the wah piece over it, while the backing track goes on on track 1. What happened is, that if I start to play the backing track from beginning, and goes to track 2, it seems that recording on track 2 is still on. The recording on track 2 should starting only when I hit it in the middle or end of the song.

I have a theory on the "use our 9v power supply" thing. In one of the recent Tone Talk episodes Josh Fiden of Voodoo Lab or Dave Friedman said that boss spent a lot of time and money designing a quiet 9v wall wart which is why theirs is more expensive. Because of this, boss might say "you must use our 9v" because they can't assure quiet functionality from other power supplies.

As a big company they may just be covering their own arse from a safety/EMC/RF compliance standpoint too. 🤷🏻 Everyone knows a different supply will work, but as a digital pedal with no doubt dc-dc converters and microprocessors in, they escape all blame for noise and interference if you don’t use it with their one they’ve tested it with, and use some other crappy switch-mode PSU.

I want to clearify something that is not correct in this rant. You can NOT use ANY 9v adapter to power this unit. While it is true that you can use other 9v power adapters, i ahve tried 3 of them and none of them works. The boss adapter is 9, v 500ma, the manual says it draws 350 ma with phantom power on for mic, and 250ma with it off. So anything below that wont work. One of adapters is 400 ma, dont work. one of the is from a pedal board power supply, dont work. The third i have is 2000ma, and that even dont work at all. I bought a 9v 500 ma and that works (not boss)
Second, it is NOT true that you MUST get the boss cable for midi. If you need a 5pin to trs 3.5 then any type A will work. If you control from a akai controller etc, a normal 3.5 trs to trs will work, not even the boss cable will work there.
also, you can use the usb in to control midi, not just the trs midi in... very important!!!!
also, the REASON you CAN record the drums, is because you CAN play any of the included boss 500 drum kits yourself using your midi keyboard or a midi controller and record any pattern you want!!!!!!!!!!!! the possibilities are then very very amazing compared to others looper even with rythm

The one parameter that's left out is the ability to program the write operation...That would be HUGE! If that were possible you wouldn't be limited to two tracks....You could program a switch to store your current loop and jump to a new location ...the possibilities would be endless...but you need to be able to write on the fly...

Hi and thank you very much! I'm a sax and keyboards player, and I've been told by a friend I should buy a looper for live gigs (you know nowadays it's more and more difficult to play with bands for little gigs so I'm thinking to play alone sometimes - we need money too ;-).
The problem is that I'm not good with electronic and computers, menus etc... I first thought to buy RC3 (I don't know if you can use it with a sax), now I'm checking RC500...
What would you advice me to buy if I want to prepare at home loops with keyoard or sax (3 or 4 parts), and then go play live, knowing that I would prefer an easy one? RC500 seems to have a very complicated menu, I'm not sure if I can use it... Thank you again!

Thanks for the great review! I recently purchased an RC 500 and it sounds great. I’m just having one problem which occurs when trying to setup verse/ chorus in single track mode with track change set to loop end while sending MIDI to my Roland TR8-S. I have Quantize set to measure and It works as expected except for one important problem. If the loop length the first loop is an even number of bars eg an 8 bar loop then the loop on Track 2 also needs to be an even number of bars eg 2,4,6,8 etc. Conversely if the first loop is and odd number of Bars eg a 3 bar pattern then the other track needs to have either 3, 6, 9 bar pattern. If track 1 is say 16 bars long and I try to record a 17 Bar section on track 2, it automatically adds an extra bar so it becomes an 18 bar section. I'm using FREE Measure mode on both tracks which I thought meant that each track could be any number of bars without being related to the other. I was able to achieve this easily with the RC 300. Is there a way to use the RC-500 in this way where the measure numbers of each track can be unrelated? Many thanks! PS i've tried emailing Boss Tech support but have had no replies. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again for your great reviews!

Did you figure out a way to make midi controller work when it just send 127 messages in CC?
Because I bought the MP-100 from Harley Benton and realize that it's not working the way it should. You can edit the custom mode and set it toggle, but it means that you have to press 2 times for every actions...
Maybe there's another way to program the mp100, to make it send 127 when pressed down and 0 when released?

While the "use Boss PSA adapter only" sticker is bullshit, "any 9V adapter will work" is not quite correct either. The PSA needs to be able to support at least the current draw of the pedal. For this looper, it should provide at least 240 mA (330 mA if you want to use phantom power on the mic input), according to the specs on Boss' website. It would be nice if these specs were printed right on the pedal though, instead of that useless sticker.

Great video! I watched the whole thing, and was very entertained while learning more about the RC-500. The highlight was the 9v power supply and MIDI cable rant. Great point!
Coincidently I spent several hours yesterday trying to get the RC-500 working with the MeloAudio MIDI Commander and the Exuun MIDI (TRS) Cable on Amazon with no luck controlling any of the MIDI functions. I should be receiving the BOSS MIDI TRS cable today, and am hoping that it works as per your and BOSS' recommendations. I'll reply back with my findings...

    • @kenahrweiler
      @kenahrweiler 3 года назад

I'm pleased to reply that the RC-500 (kind of) works with the BOSS BMIDI-5-35 MIDI/TRS cable. DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY ON MEMORY ASSIGNMENTS FOR MIDI CONTROL WITH OTHER TRS/MIDI CABLES. It probably won't work.
Apparently there are known issues with the MeloAudio MIDI Commander with loopers and other host controllers that require toggling/momentary switching, so I need to double-click the foot switch to send the command function.
I also discovered the XSONIC AIRSTEP MIDI foot controller while watching your RC-500 review, and then watched your AIRSTEP review. I'm hoping it goes on sale next week as scheduled!

As you say, track1 won't play as you start to record track2. Don't why Boss couldn't allow this, but I've found a way to do it.
After recording track1, go to record track2 set record, but don't record anything. Then when it's run, select both tracks (purple mode), then record track2 in DUB mode whilst listening to track1.

Man the glory and the suck are strong with this. Totally agree about the global settings. I like this pedal but man there are just settings that need to be global. Then give you the option to override them per loop. As a live player with a Kemper this is the strength of the Kemper. Set all your globals. 99% of the time that's just what you want. On the 1% you don't want that you can override the one or two settings. That's my issue with the 500 series pedal. I own a couple of them first thing I do is spend 4 or 5 hours figuring out the defaults I want. Then set several defaults I want then I copy them way down the end so I have them always anytime I want something new. Then I go up copy what I want paste it back down lower slot. But sucks a lot of time.youn have 99 storage spots and you save 5 or so for common things you may want. That actually when I got rid of my dds 500 delay pedal. I changed from Kemper rack to Kemper stage which has different midi controls. Instead of just changing a single global midi setting I have to go change every single saved delay. Great pedals and great sound and great features but user interface sucks. Really need to make it as a permanent part of your pedal board. With the thought I may replace ever single pedal amp and midi controller. What makes it easy for me to do this.

Dear EytschPi42, I almost gave up on my new gear buy of this Boss RC-500 till I came across your comprehensive video. Your outfit kept me going haha! Coming from the simpler TC Electronic world of loopers, this was hard stuff as I finally learnt at your mark of 1:09.24 how to create verse and chorus loops in series. This gave me confidence to try to lay down something here. But the strange part is when I power back the pedal after saving my loops, it seems as if the sound is mildly distorted and has a "slight tremolo" because it seems to have been affected by the drum rhythm tempo, though I did not trigger it at all for the saved loop: ruclips.net/video/Y9U5ig-UJe8/видео.html
