  • Installing windows 10 in a mSATA SSD. The original purpose of the mSATA slot in the Lenovo ThinkPad was to set up the rapid express cache. This feature allowed the machine to work up to 4 times faster. If you have a large enough capacity mSATA drive you can install the operating system and other applications or programs and then use another drive as a storage drive.

    Great!! I saw that slot open, so you just pop it in! I run Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, i'ts fast, but this is another storage option.

    I wouldn't give Windows so little storage, but maybe it can block the major updates for Windows 10. My T430 runs some Samsung disk acceleration with the SSD in the normal position with blazing speeds and I consider mounting a mobile broadband unit in the mSATA slot as my X230 needs a mSATA disk for dual boot, so the broadband came out of it already.
    It's funny that the mSATA slot is on the other side, below the keyboard/palmrest, in the X230 and takes a lot more work than with the T430.

      Thank you for your observation. I was just trying to show the install of this type of drive and windows at the same time. I do have a SSD installed on this computer now. As you know, this drive was originally used or intended for the Express cache feature, in combination with a HDD.

      It's very interesting anyways. I still use hybrid disks here and there.

    Just a side note, the mSATA port in this laptop uses SATA II, as the chipset supports only 2x SATA III ports, which are reserved for the internal HDD and the Multi bay slot. So you are not benefiting of the potential of the mSATA drive fully.

    • @SALGUCO

      ComputersHowtos, Thank your observation. We should probably highlight that the main purpose of the msata on the thinkpad is the express cache, to allow better performance with a HDD. I actually have a SSD on this laptop.

      SALGUCO I personally own a T430 and also wanted to upgrade to mSATA, to have a potential for another 2 2,5" disk drives, but did not go for the mSATA due to this fact. But it's also good to mention, that the performance compared to a standarsld SATA III is of course uncomparably better, even when on SATA II interface.

    Hello, very good video. I am about to make this modification on my Thinpad T430
    I will place a 256 GB mSATA, where I will install the operating system and the programs that I am going to use. In addition to that, I will use the HDD that comes from the factory as a secondary hard drive (save documents, images, videos, movies, etc.)
    Is my mod plan ok on my computer? Do you recommend doing it as described?

    • @SALGUCO
      @SALGUCO  2 года назад

      Having that capacity Shouldn't be a problem. I ended up upgrading the HDD to a SSD and removed the mSata. There is the option of a Disk caddy to remove the optical drive and place the drive there, if having multiple drives is a priority. Best of luck!

    • @cuervo6286
      @cuervo6286 2 года назад

      @@SALGUCO Why did you end up removing mSATA and replacing your HDD with an SSD?
      I really don't need that much space but I have read in many places that to give more life to an SSD (any presentation) it is advisable to have it with a slave hard drive where I store all my files. Is this true? Or is just installing everything inside the mSATA enough?
      Do you think I should go straight to replacing the HDD with an SSD?

    • @SALGUCO
      @SALGUCO  2 года назад

      @@cuervo6286 yes I removed the mSATA drive. It was a 32Gb, and with that small capacity, eventually Windows was not able to update for lack of room to do so. I did upgrade the HDD to a SSD. If you have the mSata drive already in your possession you might as well use it and use the other drive for storage, backup. If you don't, what I would do? I would upgrade the HDD to SSD. True, it is said that SSD tend to degrade overtime and that's why I also have external drives, where I save a copy of the files that I wouldn't want to lose if my computer drive went bonkers and decided to die! Best of luck whichever way you decide to go!

      Might not be able to give you a straight forward answer, for which, I apologize. Like I said or commented before, I went SSD on this computer due to the size mSata drive I had at hand. Too small to handle the updates.
      If you try to go m2sata, you might encounter compatibility issues, as per some information I read online. You can also consider converting the DVD Media drive to a SSD.
