Hello! Just have a quick question. Upgrading my build. Going from Intel I7 7700k -> Ryzen 7 5800x. I currently use a SATA SSD and a HDD (system imaged from my SSD just in case). I am installing a brand new, never used M.2 SSD for the upgrade, and I plan on installing a fresh OS on it. My question is this: Can I (after boot up and all drivers are updated, etc and everything is solid) simply plug in my old SSD & HDD WITHOUT deleting the said info on those drives??? (Keep in mind that I would shutdown the computer, plug those in, load up bios, make sure boot priority is still going to my M.2, then load to desktop). If I keep my boot priority on the M.2, my old SSD OS shouldn’t interfere with it correct? Thank you!

Easier way is to search reset click on the option it displays first, In the list of options select advanced reset, Allows you to boot and install from a disk or drive if your windows like mine doesn't allow you to use a function key to access, But only do this once you have installed windows 10 onto another drive or have an installation disk.

Yes, turns out that when I ordered my motherboard it had the recent updated bios at that time, but a few days later they had a new updated bios that’s had to be installed, so once I downloaded the new version of bios and installed it, the windows installation was easy, that’s all I needed the new updated bios
Great Video I ordered a new Dell 5676 Inspiron Gaming pc and it should arrive this week. I picked the model that has a Ryzen 7 2700 8C/16T processor an RX 580 4 gig GPU and 16 GBs of ram and a 3.5 HDD with no SSD. I ordered a PCIe NVMe drive for it and will install it. Then do this clean install should I boot it first with the 3.5 HDD then do the clean install after? Also, the pc I ordered does not have integrated Graphics just the GPU will the clean install process also add drivers for the graphics card and CPU? Much Thanks !
Congrats on the new system, my desktop has an RX580 and it's still a great card. I'd boot up once with the original HDD, just to make sure everything works before you take it apart. Once you see that it's working, power down, pop in the SSD and get started. Windows will automatically get drivers for everything, but you'll want to update your GPU drivers yourself from the AMD website, as the Windows update ones aren't the newest. That's the only driver I bother to manually install, since driver updates are usually more rare and less meaningful for other components.

hey! Nice clean information. I got a query. I have a Lenovo laptop which came with pre-installed legal Windows 10 on a HDD. But recently got a new SSD for speed improvement. Will my Windows be automatically update the Key when I install on SSD? Or do I have note down my existing key and enter it at the time of installation. Look forward. Thanks. :)
The product key on laptops that came with Windows 8/10 is stored in the BIOS. When you go to install Windows on the new SSD, the installer will automatically see the key and install the corresponding edition of Windows for you.
@Andrew Thrasher I'm not following a couple things. Before I attempt want to ask. As I just ordered 2 Samsung Evo 1tb ssd drives. So as of right now the laptop has a 128gb ssd. Fresh install of Windows 10 pro. Nothing else on it. So I do not need to save nothing. What I want to do is install new ssd. Now the laptop has a Windows 7 key sticker on back ( I brought laptop used ). 1. Do I need to select Windows 7 for all this installing on media creation tool or the 10 pro? I have 10 pro login under Microsoft account. 2. What exactly do I need to do ( or spot in vid to look again ), to make the new ssd drive C:/ ? Also so I get this correct if say I buy a used drive just delete all partions and all stuff under boot section and install Windows?
If you've already activated Windows 10 on this computer (i.e. the only hardware that's changing is the SSD) then you won't need to enter a key at all. If not, the Windows 7 key should work. The version will need to match. If it was Windows 7 Pro, then you can install Windows 10 Pro, but if it was Windows 7 Home, you'll need to install Windows 10 Home. If you're removing the 128GB SSD, then whichever new SSD you install Windows to will automatically become the C drive. If the old SSD will remain, then you'll want to delete all partitions from all drives, very similar to how I did it in the video, but there will be more than one drive number. Yes if you buy a used drive and delete all partitions you will end up with a clean install of Windows with nothing else remaining. Hope this helps!
@@AndrewThrasher1987 Thanks so let me get this straight before I get the drives in mail and screw something up. Based on my knowing which is limited, and your reply here is what I have. Being there is nothing to save on computer this should remain "simple". Get the Windows 10pro ios file on usb. Replace old drive with -new- ssd 500gb. Next turn on computer. Next boot into usb and run the 10pro install and select same ( Windows 10 pro ). All said will install and start boot into Windows to login. Will show that drive as C:/. Shut down and get into boot again and select boot from c:/ drive and done so next start will boot on that ssd? Yes, Windows 10pro is activated from 7 home factory by someone else before I brought laptop used. No, the old drive will be pulled for a new replace for speed and size. But.... I have a used ( this other is not a new ssd drive) drive in mail for -another- laptop and I have no clue what is on it and need to wipe it clean. So I gather just delete that partitions on drive- delete everything I see. Or Learn how to reformat it and do that.
@@joesphbaumgardner4579 That should work. Deleting all of the partitions will effectively reformat the drive, so no need to even consider that as an additional step.

hi Andrew, I'm replacing an broken hdd for a ssd. I don't know if the computer was running windows 10, it might be an earlier version (it's not mine). If I boot the computer will I need a key to download the fully functioning version of windows 10? And would I loose the office (word etc.)? greetings from Holland!
If the computer had Windows 10 before, you won't need a key. If it didn't have Windows 10, you'll need a key of some sort. The good news is that if it has a sticker with a Windows 7 or 8 key (that you can still read), you can enter that and it will still work for a free upgrade to Windows 10. Unfortunately Office will be gone for sure. If it was an older version and they have their key, it should be possible to reinstall. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend LibreOffice if they can't justify an Office365 subscription. I just discovered Dutch pop music (starting with Benny Sings) and love it. Cheers!
Andrew Thrasher thanks for the insanely fast response, you’re the best! It most likely was a win 10 machine, about 99% sure so we’re probably good. It’s a shame you loose office but I’ll bet they get over it! He was ready to throw his computer in the trash when I stopped him. I’m not really in to his music. You should check out Maan or Nielson, they do sing in Dutch but their voices are amazing. Kind regards, Simon
Than you! This really helped with my corrupted DIY desktop. Would you recommend this for an almost brand new Dell laptop? Or do i need to download all, if not most of the Dell drivers?
"Because I've already read the terms and conditions" that is just too good, just like how I always read instructions for ikea products
For win10 after I did a clean isntall, it will detect the chipset, SSD,HDD,GPU etc and get all the drivers?!?! Which is better, let win10 get all the drivers or I manually download each one and install them?

Bro I have recently bought a new SSD and going to do a fresh Windows install on it... I wanted to ask few questions...
1. Whether I will have to create New Volume from disk management after installing SSD in my laptop?
2. Will I have to change some settings other than Boot priority in the BIOS menu before or after installing Windows 10 on SSD?
3. Whether creating partitions of SSD like system reserved etc. necessary during Windows installation? (Even after watching video I'm still confused regarding this....😅)
Thank you. Great instructions. Works like a charm. Just a note, in Acer Aspire laptop in Bios Boot you need to move the USB drive where the ISO is to the first place by using F6 or F5 before saving and exiting. Other than that this instruction is perfect.
I have Windows XP. Will this work? Thank You so much.
February 2020, worked like a charm. Thanks dude!
Thanks, I didn't know what the partitions did and thought I might brick my computer by deleting them. 100% not the case, totally safe to delete all of them for complete clean install.
July 2020, worked for me, thanks alot! nice video, very straight to the point and very helpfull.
Your tone of voice is so nice for tutorials
Andrew, you are amazing!!! I followed your easy to follow steps and got it done. Thank you so very much.
I did this for latitude e7450 and it worked perfectly. Thankyou very much
Thank you for the information! Some of the other videos were over explaining and never really went into detail like you did. Thank you!
Thanks for the great video, used your tip about deleting all the partitions, and loaded windows right away(after many attempts of trying to format), finally!! Thought my hard drive was corrupted, so I ended up buying a 500gb ssd, I'll install it when I get it and keep my old one for storage.
Thanks very much. That was simple, clear, comprehensive and enabling.
@@BlackKnight-ch4en It did actually which prevented the first attempt at creating the Windows 10 media creation tool. After formatting ,no problem. Thanks!
I stupidly installed Server 2016 on my laptop instead of doing it on VMware. This really covered my butt. Thanks!!
To find out your Windows edition and 32/64 bit:
Right click This PC from any folder and click Properties. You will see the Windows edition i.e. Windows 10 Home; and System type i.e. 64-bit Operating system.
Before beginning the installation Google your laptop brand/model plus ‘boot function key’ to find out which F1-12 key to press in order to interrupt the normal boot process and select “Boot from USB”
i.e. HP Pavilion boot function key
Love this video, clean explanation and detailed steps, 10/10
my hdd on my computer crashed so I switched over to a ssd and im going to give this a try once I get out of class, great video, thank you for the information !!
Same thing happened to me did u end up needing a new key
Thank you for letting me know everything. I've watched other videos and then just gave up bc they were old and the software and the website have changed since then. But now I am on my way to install my Windows 10 to a USB flash drive. Thank you!
Just did this for the second time last night for my Lenovo 430s as installed extra 4 Gig of RAM but Only pick's - up 8.00 GB (3.22 GB usable),on Windows 10Pro on to a ScanDisk 32 Gig and useing the USB way to use my Laptop. To enter Bios i need to fast on start-up by pressing the enter - key as i have trimmed as much as possible on other Pro Video's ,but this is the best way to have a great running machine bar my RAM,i set it to Max in the set-up for Virtual Performance but need to put a top number and a bottom amount in that setting under MSCONFIG as im getting there & sorting my 8Gig of RAM out Now mainly because Lenovo's can go up to 32Gig's with space under the keyboard aswell as the RAM-BAYS ....nice video ....Cheers 🍻
I was following the video and installed the window on a USB. I missed it myself but can there be an annotation in the video to remind everyone that this will FORMAT AND WIPE the USB plz. The text in the installer itself is very small as well.
Thank you. You really helped me out with the new installation on my SSD
Also make sure when it restarts after installation that you pick your hdd or ssd as a primary boot and remove the usb.
So during the installation process i won't have the option to choose the ssd?
James Bradbury you will but once it is installed and it restarts pick it as a primary boot so you dont get in a boot loop.
9:50 is exactlywhat i am looking for!! thanks!!!
I did the full setup process and it brought me right back to the first menu screen of windows setup
You need to remove the memory stick once the installation states its restarting.
January 2020 worked perfectly. Thank you very much!
It can work on SATA hard drive as I don't have ssd hard drive?? Please answer if you know
very well made video.. this how instructional content should be made... Simple.. thanks mate!
Thank you I had to do a clean reinstall bec I upgraded my motherboard so I had to get a new windows key and this video help me out bec I for got on how to do all this.thank you for the great help on this.
Thank you.
I got the GANDCRAB virus downloading Vuescan software from the Pirates Bay and despite losing some recent files that I hadn't archived/backed up I soon decided to cut my loses and start afresh when the computer started misbehaving. I actually reformatted my SSD on a 2nd machine and then followed your video using a USB key installation. I had no fewer than 5 partitions but by deleting them one at a time got them down to one. After that it's just a matter of following the onscreen instructions and accepting it will take some time to upgrade the USB W10 installation. But thanks for the help . . .
Tip for lenovo ideapad user if they cant open the bios there is a button in your laptop which directly open boot menu you can search (lenovo ideapad hidden button to open boot menu ) for more details
Still good advise in 2021 Thank you.Worked on a Surface Pro that had windows 8.1 pro.
July 2020 and worked perfect. Thank you very much
I want to say thank you so much i form Jamaica and this is work for me 2024 😅 omg i feel so good ❤❤❤ thank you so much
even 2024 still working thank you
It's Easy to Understand haha All We neeed is A Flash Drive haha
Kudos bro, very impressed and worked like a charm!
This should be at the top .. nice tutorial man 👍🏻
Great information regard 32 bit vs 64 bit never understood that until today.
Andy this is very helpful. Iso setup failed for me for s couple of rounds with error message. Boosting from USB, deleting all partitions to start anew is a great idea. Thank you!
I am just bought a new SSD ,and I finished putting Windows in a disk .When I first open laptop ,it shows the menu .But I cannot find the same option like you .So I close It .and I just open it Again .It just still in brand
Thanks it really helped a lot, keep up the good work.
THANK YOU! That was as clear, as helpful as it can get.
Easier way is to search reset click on the option it displays first, In the list of options select advanced reset, Allows you to boot and install from a disk or drive if your windows like mine doesn't allow you to use a function key to access, But only do this once you have installed windows 10 onto another drive or have an installation disk.
Super helpful. Thanks Andy!
Thank you! It worked great. Thank you for posting this easy to understand video.
Thank you for such a simple and easy to understand video:)
I just finished building my gaming pc, and I downloaded the windows creation tool into a usb, and when I insert it to my rig it takes me to the bios, then I set the boot priority to the sandisk partitions 1 and my computer freezes, then I restart it again then I set the one that says sandisk to boot priority and a small windows icon appears and it loads up for like 2 seconds and it freezes, and nothing happens.
TheMartingrc I’m having the same issue as we speak. Did you figure out a solution?
Yes, turns out that when I ordered my motherboard it had the recent updated bios at that time, but a few days later they had a new updated bios that’s had to be installed, so once I downloaded the new version of bios and installed it, the windows installation was easy, that’s all I needed the new updated bios
I was having trouble with errors but i guess deleting them files did the trick, thx!
Thanks for the help found out I had to hit fn and f2 to get to the bios now I'm up and running
In case of a hard drive already installed, can we format the C drive after windows has been installed in the SSD
@@AndrewThrasher1987Thrasher yes sir will do thank you I love your content keep up the good work and thank you for responding to my comment in a timely manner. My system should be here on Thursday! I won't need a key either right because I will have booted to the HDD once already and windows will be active?
@@johntanner611 Correct, no key required. Thanks for the kind words!
@@AndrewThrasher1987 Anytime keep up the good work!
Hello! Just have a quick question.
Upgrading my build. Going from Intel I7 7700k -> Ryzen 7 5800x.
I currently use a SATA SSD and a HDD (system imaged from my SSD just in case).
I am installing a brand new, never used M.2 SSD for the upgrade, and I plan on installing a fresh OS on it.
My question is this:
Can I (after boot up and all drivers are updated, etc and everything is solid) simply plug in my old SSD & HDD WITHOUT deleting the said info on those drives???
If I keep my boot priority on the M.2, my old SSD OS shouldn’t interfere with it correct?
Thank you!
@@JJFlores197 Thanks much :)
@@AndrewThrasher1987 Got it, thanks. When I get drives we shall see how this goes. What will be fun for me is when I update drives on my main computer from spin drive. I have a ton of stuff and will have to clone it. That should be fun lol.
Finally!!,
I have found the video I was looking for😀
Thanx for the video, very clear explanation and it worked perfectly!!
I installed windows 10 on my new SSD but after restarting my computer the next day everything got deleted. It's showing me the windows setup process again but it won't recognize my SSD anymore.
This tutorial really helped me out 😭
Thank you so much this is much appreciated and you helped me through
hi Andrew, I'm replacing an broken hdd for a ssd.
Amazing video. Helped so much! Thank you
Who else is glad that Jim Gaffigan made this tutorial.
