Upgrading my ThinkPad with an MSATA Solid State Drive
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2020
- I got an MSATA sold state drive to increase the storage space on my ThinkPad. I now have it and a terabyte SSD. Some MSATA drives can actually be as large as a TB, but this one was "only" 256 GB. I plan on moving my operating system over to it and perhaps my backup of the Monero blockchain.
The ThinkPad X220 was the first of the X series ThinkPads to have an MSATA slot. While I like the X200, I don't believe any of them came with it.

Right from the start, he shows you who's actually the boss here.
I'm surprised none of these comments are roasting him for saying "volts". Paused straight away and was like 'hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm'. Yes changing voltage accross parts totally sounds legit, let alone those atypical voltages for batteries.

I'd love to see a video of you moving your OS over. I wouldn't even know how to start doing that.
I have never done this but I assume dd'ing the drive, reconfiguring grub and editing fstab might be just enough. Though personally I'd go straight to reinstall because I'm pretty sure I'd brick it anyway so why bother... Especially if you're running more complex config like I do -- 2 drives with raid0+luks+lvm.
If I were going to add an MSATA drive in my Thinkpad, I would plan on an OS reinstall to the new drive.
@@CyberAndy_ Well, that's what dd does... And you need to edit fstab because that's where mount points for partitions are defined and you want to change mount point for (at least) root to match the new hard drive...
@@martinprochazka3714 you got it in one dude, it's really that simple.
I did the exact procedure Luke did in this video last month and thought I'd try dd'ing my drive for the meme - it worked! I was unable to boot into Arch properly at first because I didn't edit the fstab (retard moment) so I edited the fstab file from a separate computer and it booted fine afterwards :)
A fresh install would probably be the smartest idea
Hey! I just got one on my X220t last month! Works like a charm!
UNICOMP!!! Yeah baby!!!
If I remember correctly that will work up to sata 2 speeds, while default 2.5" disk port will work up to sata 3 speeds on x220. Just worth mentioning when deciding what will the disk be used for.
sorry but i prefer to just throw away my fartbook pro and drop 2 grand on a new 1 if i need an upgrade
Nice content, I'll consooom some of these nice products.
Nice video! It's great to see that someone who works confidently on the inside of their laptop is as clumsy as I am! I put 2.5 inch format SSDs in two laptops (an old Dell E6530 and a newer Acer) a few weeks ago and just and added a mSata card to a Thinkpad E520. Five- to ten-year old Thinkpads (with a little upgrade TLC) remain one of the best laptop values for most users .
Luke Smith: "I always end up with extra screws"
Me: "please Luke - don't work as an airplane technician... "
I made the same mod to my x220, and have a 2tb slim spinner drive in my NAS to pull out and stick into the main slot for when I go on trips.
Have a nearly virgin 9-cell bettery and a 1080p IPS screen, too.
I bought my old ThinkPad some days ago. I will do the same and become a CHAD too, can already feel the testosterone flowing.
that screw set was wonderful
that's f-ing insane, wow, the technology leaps like hell
Did this to my W520 last November.
Best thing I've done since running LARBS.
Also replaced the optical drive with a hdd caddy. Put a regular platter drive in there for backup.
Hey Luke, It was funny for me to see how your old film canisters look exactly like Medication bottles of today. Were you taking some when you filmed this video? Second, Don't worry about the extra screws you always find after repairing a laptop. Laptop manufacturers always, Always, ALWAYS include extras inside just in case they are needed. : - ))
Tipss:
Use eggs case or magnet to keeps the screws.
1:59. "I used to screw in my sunglasses". Me too Luke.... me too.
"a boomer consoomer tries to self-heal his dementia by adding more capacity"
I miss the days of electronics like this. The laptops are more focused on being slim and breaking after 2 years, rather than being durable. Even something like my phone is a pain in the ass to replace the battery.
Not at all, Asus even has mid tier laptops called "TUF" that are focus on being fat and durable instead of slim and efficient.
I love the fact that the lid of his computer has water rings on it like he uses it as a coaster.
I've put an msata drive into my T430 and installed an OS on it (MX Linux). Gotta say it's a lot simpler than on Luke's video - no removing the keyboard and palmrest, simply removing a cover on the base (one screw) and pushing the SSD into place!
Which credit card should I use to open the 'blue thingy'? I followed your advice for getting off the grid and now have 12 credit cards.
Luke's tech tips
Nice job Luke. FYI that thing you found the screw in is a modern prescription vial (note "Susie safety" cap) not a "film can" that goes back till at least the '60s.
Always end up with extra screws, huh? LOL..... I love you channel !
I have that exact screwdriver kit 😮
When exposed to the right combination of air and sunlight the screws go through mitosis.
What is remarkable is that is a 10 year old laptop and it's still easy to find parts for it and putting max RAM and an SSD plus an unbloated Linux makes it's extremely viable and extremely affordable. Older ThinkPads even some newer ones are an excellent value. They are all rather easy to access and service and you can find detailed technical service manuals showing everything you need to know to completely disassemble properly.
I added an mSATA to my Thinkpad T440p and I used it for my Windows-based retrogaming setup for when I'm on the go.
if you want infinite screws... that is a great tip luke!
The msata drive is a great upgrade for x220 thinkpads, but dont forget that the msata drive is 'slower' than a good SATA3 SSD in the 2.5 inch bay
Now this is the boomer tech content I signed up for.
7:10 Luke drop tips
Can you link the exact same screwdriver set?
Meh.. Replace the drive while driving around and I'll be impressed.
Hahaha this one is good
Be careful. In most old thinkpads MSATA drive is SATA 2, so speed rate will be notably lower compared to the main drive, which is SATA 3. Of course, you will only notice this with an SSD, but I think it's important to mention.
Ah, yes. Enslaved data.
I knew there would be a reason I shouldn't have standardised on X200s. The cheap X200 ultrabases are useful though.
Luke thank you very much for making this video, using an MSATA/mPCIE SSD is somewhat niche and I couldn't find lots of information on the possibility of installation. I just have one question that I'm hoping you can answer:
"Theres a chance you already have some MSATA thing here" - would that be the 3G Cellular Modem or the 2GB Turbo Memory module on a T400? I have a fully decked-out model and so I don't have any spare slots to put the thing. If it means taking out the paper-weight turbo memory then I'm buying an SSD straight away.
I ask because I've heard (with varying degrees of reliability) that some of the MSATA/mPCIE slots on these computers don't contain data rails.
I've also heard the data rails are not connected on earlier thinkpads. I think it was introduced in the X220 era! Which is a real shame because there's definitely space for it in an X200, T400 and W/T500!
Getting my x220 in a day or two super pumped.

@Luke Smith unfortunately upgrades do not cover you at some point. Otherwise I really miss my old IBM Thinkpad R51 and its keyboard. By the way, I have just installed Artix + LARBS after Arch. It is really smooth but some key combinations are not completely working. Shift + Prt Scr opens the Dmenu, I select the "select an area" choice but the cursor does not become a "plus" sign to select. It used to with Arch.

I was expecting some benchmark, i will never put a block-chain data on a device like SSD due to degradation over time , and another thing to take in consideration, if the block-chain data is bigger eventually than the disk space or has a bad sector, you can lost your offline "wallet". Thanks for the livestreams, i consumed all the "Not Related!" playlist, hope you do more chapters, greetings.
Do your external keyboard have the "nipple" mouse??

Hi Luke! Does your X220 screen have a very faint yellow tint on the screen? Mine does and I want to know if there's something I can do to fix it. I know Thinkpad screens in general suck but I hate that yellow tint.
No I don't have a problem like that. Replacing a X220 screen is pretty easy though. I'd recommend buying a dead X220 on eBay with a good IPS display and replacing it. You can probably find one for less than 50 USD.
The trawling on this video is off the charts.
What?
can you make a video showing your desktop computer?
Wow. It's a shame that the upload of this video took so long. 8 years ago this tutorial would have really helped me.
Hey Luke, could you post all your kind of "default" applications you use in your dwm install or the ones you would recommend, because that's literally all that is holding me back from switching from gnome to dwm... I even have dwm already kind of configured on an old laptop, but what is missing are the applications. And another question, how would go about letting something like Telegram Desktop run as a background process, that notifies me whenever I have a new message, such that I don't have to have the GUI open all the time? In gnome that's possible by using an extension like "tray icons" or the one Ubuntu uses. That's the other thing that's holding me back from switching. I would really appreciate some advice. Love your videos!

How you get your text in color?
Brah your "film cannister" 5:14 says "twice daily"...that's a medication bottle from a Kmart in-store pharmacy by the looks of it. Film cannisters were usually shorter and the plastic was opaque, not translucent like that bottle.

it was a used sandisk one. msata was big in enterprise. before m.2 was the new cringe.
for an x220 speed isn't really relevant as long as it can saturate sata 2. you won't even really notice it unless youre gaming/doing hdd bandwidth intensive tasks. the big difference that you will notice is latency. much faster booting and application responsiveness.
Kek. Good video!
