Laptop Total Disassembly and New Thermal Pasting
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 июл 2024
- I wanted to cool down my laptop (ThinkPad X220)'s running speed so I repasted my computer's thermal paste. It's a good idea to do this every once in a while. This basically requires a total disassembly and removal of the mother board. It's not that hard and I show the process. I did run into a stripped screw, but some pliers did the work.

Even Luke's thermal paste runs arch.
Arctic's, now I'll show myself out.
I use arctics btw
They say dissecting ThinkPads is an early red flag for becoming a serial killer later in life
11:55 the reason why they recommend to unscrew the heatsink that way is to prevent cracking the CPU, you could put a lot of pressure in one side and break it
@Ben T. mine literally bends the motherboard a little.
Same when you screw that back in, I do it diagonally and little by little to distribute pressure evenly
Subtle flex with the trackpoint desktop keyboard
Keep track of your screws, folks. My T420 is still a wobbly mess after losing a few during BIOS flashing.
brotip: set them on the table in the shape you took them out
The t420 uses standard m2.5 screws, just buy a few of those
i stick them to small magnets. even if they fall from the table, they stay together.
one magnet for each set of screws. usually four is enough: backside, screen, motherboard, everything else.
a little late, but you can film the process with your phone so you can go back in time and see where the screw flew off to
The screws on the heatsink are numberbed in the order they should be tightened. I used to service Thinkpads all the time, brought back memories.
I thought this was all very complicated, but I was assured that it was pretty basic by how many times he said "basically".
Debloating ThinkPad 101 XD
Watching those screws all over the place triggered my anxiety haha
Don't forget the most important part: recording the disassembly! Having a video-recording of the disassembly is useful for referencing where everything goes, but especially for the screws. At least 90% of the time when reassembling it, you'll end up with _at least_ one extra screw, and the other 10% of time you'll end up a screw short.
I have replaced fans, keyboard, ram, display, brackets and SSD in my T400 and a couple of other Thinkpads but this disassembly looks scary af.
Having to remove almost everything to get to it I'd only be willing to do if the Laptop is actually broken.
I'd also take detailed pictures and notes during the disassembly to check on assembly whether I'd put in everything as they were before.
The way he handled the screws triggered my "OCD".
multiple videos, AND a livestream in the same weak. LETS GOO
Thank you for sharing !
I don't recommend using q tips since they leave cotton on the CPU. You're better off using a stronger material like a paper towel or coffee filter to clean it off.
I've done that for ALL the thinkpads
and the cellphone (who needed it the most since they dont care about the paste there).
This last at least 5years with a quality paste.
Luke's Tech Tips
Nice! Did just pull out my T420 and Dock.
Oh my, the disassembly is so trippy and wild 😂
These videos are great just for the comments alone, pretty sure Luke reads them all, and doesn't give a shit about all the tips.
THX dude! great thinkpad MUST SEE video. / Gracias colega! Un buen buen vídeo que todos deberían ver!
This is just like the minecraft computer mod...
I did this on my old macbook pro from 2012 for the first time. The old factory past was basically powder by the time I removed it.
I replace when I start noticing temps at 5 or 6 degrees higher during idle. Time to change. Also cleaning out dust from heatsink/fan(s)
Hey Luke, thanks for the videos. Please be mindful of static charge. CPUs are very sensitive to them. If I were you, I would discharge myself very frequently, just to be on the safe side. I haven't done any research to know how to do static charge protection properly, but I know it's definitely a thing to do.
Hey, noticed you're screwing the wrong direction here 15:50, use "right hand rule" (google it!).
I had to do this with my Asus UX31A after ~5 years. It shut itself off when reaching ~20% battery, was probably overheating too.
Some new paste and it works like brand new. Overcooked thermal paste doesn't taste that great.
Don't use a Q-tip on the fan, use a paintbrush.
Bro, just use water.
instructions unclear, ate the thermal paste
in 10 years fathers will teach this to their sons the way they teach them to tie a tie today
Looking where things are going in 10 years internals of all laptops will be engulfed in the epoxy, and not serviceable at all, even by the manufacturers 🙈
GOD DAMN, thinkpads are awesome, just seeing him disasemble it made me realize why people like them
Luke "repasting the thermal paste" Smith
fwiw I like to use coffee filters to remove the paste after dabbing them with the isopropyl. They’re cheap and unlike cotton swabs you wont get cotton strands wrapped around smd parts.
You also need an antistatic wristband, an allen key, a Swiss knife Wich hopefully has a screwdriver in it, and a table
funny way to screw backwards @ 15:50 lmao.
It's probably not advisable to use anything but straight isopropyl(70% should be okay), not sure if glycerin could leave anything behind that would be less than ideal. also clean the heatsink as well, not sure if it's editing from the video but there's old paste still on that heatsink.. love you Uncle Luke
It actually doesn't matter whether you spread the thermal paste or not, you just want to have the IHS covered with thermal paste. Don't replace the thermal pad with thermal paste!!! Thermal pad is thicker than the paste, so there would be no contact.
i'm glad that i only need to take off like 4 screws to change my cpu
You could also read the service manual.
Tha'ss raycis!!!
I did the same on my T430 some hours ago, what a coincidence. I recommend liquid metal thermal paste. Even after five years the liquid metal paste on my Workstation was almost like freshly applied. The only downside is you have to be carefull because it is highly conductive so don't apply to much.
another downside: it eats aluminum like a cancer. a single small drop can waste the thinkpad's chassis. it also diffuses gradually into copper (can dry completely in a matter of months, depends on surface, temperatures, shape of thermal plate).
@@aleclitvinov Hmm never experienced that. My workstation cooler is made out of alu. I couldn't see any flaw and my old copper water cooler also has no problems.
@@adrianhartwig2646 copper just dries. aluminum first becomes brittle, then disintegrates. it's a real problem ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=gallium+aluminum
i don't know why your cooler is all right, maybe some kind of coating or just luck.
@@aleclitvinov Stop stop stop. Gallium is a liquid metal but not all liquid metals are gallium. I wrote "liquid metal thermal paste". I hope you agree with me that it would be quite dumb to produce a thermal paste that destroys the cooler.
@@adrianhartwig2646 most (if not all) "liquid metal thermal pastes" are in fact galinstan - a mixture of gallium, indium and tin. there are other possible compositions but most of them are either toxic or ineffective. anyway, most liquid metal alloys will affect aluminum.
That other chip is the PCH or the north bridge depending on which generation it is. The GPU on those is integrated into the cpu. Cheers.
thats the south bridge not gpu
lol so many people will break something in their laptop, now laptops are not as easy to mantain as old thinkpads were
Yesterday I changed my RX 570's thermal paste. Before it was reaching 80 Celsius degree, after it was stable at 65 Celsius degree.
Did I just watch a tutorial on how to coin flip completely destroying your laptop?
crushed up oyster paste
hey luke!!
Nice hair on the gpu pad!
I got a chromebook ad before this, lmfao
you should get a ramekin to put those screws in.
I'm too afraid to do it myself, I hope my X220 wil run on 90°C temps some more time
Looks like your thermal pad on the graphic chip could do with a replacement too, just fyi.
Will we ever see a review of your unicomp?

Please make a video about gopher sites and the gopher protocol.
You can put your screws in a glass not to lose them.
luke looks like the love child of babish and ryan reynolds
Me expecting the entire time for him to break it beyond repair
change your oil? bro, we need to have a talk about either a) how often you change your thermal paste or b) how not often you are changing your oil.
Car oil should be changed 6 to 8 months if the thing is just sitting there and only going a few miles. If you're driving regularly it should be changed every time you hit about 4k to 8k miles depending on the age of the car and requirements. Thermal paste? that's like every 5 to 10 years at max unless it's constantly over heating, like in macbooks.
Not putting those screws in a small container and out of the way was really clinching my sphincter.
19:00 regularly means at constant intervals of time, the intervals can be a month, a year, or even 10 years. you dont mean semi-regularly. you mean regularly but with a long time interval
Wintergreen alcohol is bloated.
Put the screws in a shotglass, or similar, so you don't scratch the computer or lose them.
Into the FULL shot glass.Separate glass for separate sets of screws. And drink a shot every time you need to get the screws back. Probably will try it sometime 😏
Luke's farming screws again?
T420 master race reporting in: i don't have to lift my motherboard out of the chassis to get to the CPU because it's mounted on the top :^))))))
X1 Carbons are like this starting from the 5th generation, at least ;)
1. You put much thermal paste
2. When you try to screw CPU, it was reversed direction.
What is that model of the keyboard ? (the desktop one with the track dot)
He's using a Endura Pro from Unicomp (litteraly a Model M with trackpoint)
This is slightly painful to watch your totally MAN HANDLING it lol.
This is why old thinkpads are a meme. How often do you replace the battery or carry an extra one? The newer laptops are easier to take apart and could be as modular if the manufacturers didn't solder everything. But they arn't water proof :(
Fuck this is triggering me so hard. New 1000$ consoomer models that have 8gb soldered and no slots. And then 16gb version is +400$, yeah no thanks
opening is easy. putting back is hard
Is it possible to upgrade speaker on t420?
you can replace them idk about "upgrade" though... they have to fit.
So much easier to access the CPU on the L440 I have, totally unexpected
Hi Luke! I have a question for you . Is a T530 think pad a good deal? If Linux is installed would it be secure? It was free and is in mint condition.
If its a good deal is all about the price you pay for it.
Does here anyone have experience taking apart a T450, the palm rest area has worn down completely and i want to replace it. Was wondering if anyone knew if it was worth the trouble or knew a way to re coat the worn area
Google for Thinkpad T450 skin. Amazon, but also others have all kind of skins. If you want to you can only do the palm rests
I just bought x220 i7, i hope it arrives in good shape... What upgrade should i do first?
screen
ssd
LOL these troll videos are great
The bigger the gob, the better the job Eh!
how did you managed to find a full size keyboard with the mouse nipple??
check www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/UB40PGA
Check also the Tex Shinobi. It comes with cherry MX switches and uses 3-buttons trackpoint (Endura Pro has only two)
Giligar13 collab video when?
Its actually better if you spread it ;D
tried repasting once but one of the last screws were stuck and stripped :/
Sick troll vid
Screwing is not your best quality (15:50). Wrong direction (CCW?) and all the pressure at one side of CPU first. ... "hah hah hah" moment (16:06) is probably when you realized that you did not screw any of the screws.
no before and after temps? ...
hiiiii ! :3
why does this video look like it's from 2015
Tweezers? What is this, the Verge?
For a Laptop that's easy to take apart the cpu die sure is out of reach, my fancy gaming HP opens easier than that. Also that is in fact too much thermal paste but it literally doesn't matter, the more the merrier. As long as it's not liquid metal.
is your fancy gayming hp laptops screen 12,5inch? t-series are way easier to disassemble because theyre simpyl bigger
bro if u put too much thermal paste ur computer will freeze a lot
@@rabbirt that means paste is working
a little extra is good because while less would perform slightly better, if you miss even a little coverage it will perform significantly worse than just being a tad overpasted
he hasn't shown if his laptop boots up, looks like Luke just.... SCREWED UP! YEAHHH!!!!! Anyways, looks like you have a guitar back there. When are we going to see Luke GNU/Songs?
But you can watch Luke's Unix Chad barefoot haha free as freedom.. lurking around the house ranting about life

@@bashisobsolete.pythonismyn6321 Ah, I didn't know that Unicomp makes trackpoint keyboards, but it makes sense. Brilliant!
@@bashisobsolete.pythonismyn6321 Right. I do have a 4x12, but I always wonder if it could be even better with a nipple.

so... you want to get rid of the WHITE screws huh?
I repaste everytime i change my fan's brake pads
If your temps are just alright why should you do it?
in theory if your temps are alright then you don't need to.
A lot of people don't regularly check their temperatures, and if it's a desktop PC, you won't notice unless your PC suddenly starts shutting down for no apparent reason.
If it's old like Luke's laptop and you've never changed it, you probably need to otherwise it won't be long before your computer starts overheating
