You claim not to be a gaymer, but then you have Nintento 64 in alongside with your Thinkpad.
It annoys me that new laptops have too large flexing track pad without dedicated buttons, even worse when there is zero tactile feedback on borders. And it's unstably slow even on highest sensitivity. Never got used to Track-point since it wasn't much of a thing anymore - it's tricky to be precise and quick.
I'm still using a 7 year old thinkpad just because I can't justify buying a laptop that's guaranteed to be worse. At least not until it literally becomes too underpowered for browsing with a single tab.
I was looking to replace my very new, and very dead toshiba laptop that I loved so much. The power supply circuits died on the mobo, so of course the whole thing is junked now. I came across information about building a thinkpad to be more powerful and way wayyyy more robust than most laptops for less than a new one. I am now a proud owner of a Lenovo Thinkpad T440P. HP elitebooks are the closest to a thinkpad design from HP
I've been ThinkPad pilled for about a year now thanks to Mr. Smith. I have a W510 and X201. I'm a little upset at the fact normies push the market towards that sleek design since it is more fragile and inherently more difficult to repair and replace parts. Companies like that since normies will just buy a new laptop or phone or whatever when something needs to be fixed. Ideally it should be robust and modular without having some kind of major firmware difficulty. Great video, Luke!
that comment about girls not liking thinkpads got me thinking. Its highly commodified that women make 90% of consumer choices. Guys would prefer an ugly box but women would be more into colors, sleekness, and less screws on the machine. I guess this is why everything keeps dumbing down now.
Don't ask questions, just consoom ThinkPad and get excited for next ThinkPad
Hp Is the most garbage company that is ever invented. I Hear problems with heat and hardware just dont work well AND in love with Windows. HP Is one phrase: piace of garbage.
I don't use HP hardware by principle tbh
Older HP EliteBooks are basically on-par with ThinkPads. I would avoid their consumer laptops, but the same goes for Lenovo. In the HP EliteBook 8770w you can replace both the CPU and GPU. This gives you a choice between AMD or Nvidia and allows you to choose between consumer or workstation GPUs depending on your needs. I have mostly dealt with ThinkPads, personally, but HP and Dell made some good business laptops as well.

Totally agree. UEFI is there to discourage the installation of any non MS operating system. If I buy a new laptop, I never boot into Winblows. It gets Linux as soon a it comes out of the box. My favorite lappy is by far my Thinkpad. I had an old IBM Thinkpad. That think booted from button press to Arch Linux login screen in 9 seconds.

One of my machines is a MSI GS60 Ghost Pro and you have to remove something like 12ish screws plus the whole motherboard and fan assembly in order to get to the M2 drives and RAM! A nightmare. In contrast, my T440p - two screws and you're there!
Wish they kept the modular style of the older laptops :/
Old probooks are also really upgradable, detachable battery, no screws needed to swap things like ram
Yeah it's annoying, I have to recompile and install my WiFi driver for my "newer and better" laptop, every time I reinstall. Thinkpads are better.
I have a Lenovo L480, a modern laptop, and everything works right. The key point here is Lenovo's Thinkpad. They are easily upgradable and work with Linux like a charm. For other brands besides Lenovo I do agree with you
Dells and HPs of 7+ years also had externally removable batteries and drives. I think the new way helps force the purchase of new laptops more easily.
I like old laptops too but i do love the direction new laptops are going in. The number of cores i get on them to do simulations and virtual workloads is unmatched. They do have some drawbacks, but overall i think it's a huge help.
Only reason why i dont use ThinkPad is that they are hard to get and performance sucks.
That's only the CPU though (which is soldered to the board nowadays), still does not excuse the fact that they are still a pain to open up and swap out their batteries.
"Uh, nasty!"
Honey Badger don't care.
7:03 Why do you have that flag?
I was impressed when I installed Debian 10 a few different laptops in the house - on one of them, the installer asked for me to download 2 files for the WiFi, which I did and the WiFi was working. I guess I could have plugged in an Ethernet cable, but at least it handled it reasonably well to ensure a good experience from first login.
Then moment I saw your computers. A smile came to my face. I have a similar computer set-up. A personal old X230 & a similar company issued HP.
Sorry but no, as a guy who works with resource intensive software like CAD software I disagree, both in terms of performance and look. Sorry, not everyone wants to have with him chunky laptop for work and not everyone loves older keyboard with higher "jump". Now, come one and downvote my comment. For video creation they suck too. This is why you buy new laptops with Linux already installed(and to save money on the windows tax), that way you KNOW it's completely designed for it and everything "just werks".

@Peter Andrijeczko I'm going to shamelessly hijack this comment thread to ask you about your experience about updating stuff on Gentoo in all these years. Some people say it's a pain, some people say it's a breeze, I'm considering using it myself but I'm midterm right now and don't have enough time for conflicts et all. TY.
Sorry the problem is Linux when it comes to drivers. The Kernel devs decided to have an unstable ABI which means you cannot distribute binary drivers easily.
Why are you on this channel you dumb zoomer
There are companies like Atheros putting out proper free drivers that can be included in the kernel. I would rather more companies follow this path than make it easier for companies to release proprietary blobs.
@@SoundToxin So would I. However that doesn't change the fact that this situation was made by the kernels to force people to release their code GPL.
Also there is pretty much zero benefit to Nvidia to in releasing the source. I wouldn't release the source to kernel devs (there are tonnes of regressions in the kernel).
.... NO ONE GONNA TALK ABOUT THAT PHONE?
Cool stuff though....
100% agree with everything you said.
My thoughts:
Secure Boot = Fake Security
If it doesn't work out of the box with Linux, which it does 99% of the time, then it's going to be a pain to get working, but maybe it's hardware you shouldn't be using.
Well secure boot can be a good thing if configured properly. Normally computers ship with secure boot keys that only work with windows, I replaced those keys with my own keys on my computer and now I can sign my own software, including grub and the Linux kernel. Once one of my friends tried to prank me by putting a windows bootable USB drive and when I fired up the PC the firmware stopped right there and refused to load it. Not really an evil maid attack but still, it worked :)
Wifi drivers were always a problem on Linux. It was even a meme back around 2000 on Slackware, when spending days to get it working was just the natural state of things. There's a reason we had projects like NDISwrapper to run Windows drivers on GNU/Linux. It even worked most of the time!
In addition to that it doesn't help that the linux ABI is constantly in development. A simple update from kernel 4.16 to 4.17 can make your wifi stop working. There's a lot to say about Windows, but their compatibility and slow-changing API's are a big reason they have the big market share and Linux doesn't.
The only reason old Thinkpads work so well with Linux is just because they're, well, old. And a lot of developers use these laptops of course.
Also, "Using linux with UEFI is such a pain", is that not partly to blame on boomer-y linux devs too? We're also not booting in real mode anymore.
On my newer laptop, I couldn’t go into UEFI while booting. So annoying! To install Linux, I had to go through the Windows settings only to enter UEFI.
What. Who actually uses the tracknipple? I've always despised it.
UEFI is just a way too psychologically harass non windows users and admins. It was such a huge pain to install Gentoo with full system encryption on a HP Elitebook 2570p. The only advantage i see in UEFI is some eyecandy and the possabiltity to use a mouse, everything else ist just bloat. For eaxample the UEFI fancontrol is such an annoyance, because you can not tweak it enough to be useful. I wanted to use the fancontrol from the lm_sensor package. I set the fancontrol to look every 5sec how high the temp is and set the fanspeed accordingly but the UEFI set the fanspeed every 2-3sec higher than my fancontrol. You can imagine how nerve wrecking it is if your fan goes every 2sec from high to low and back. Why does an Bios/UEFI need such functions? Just follow the KISS principle and everything would be fine.
* Laughing in Clevo N750WU *
I don't understand why new laptops are so focused on "aesthetic" and "clean design" and have soldered RAM and Storage, I think of computers as tools and that they should be as function over form as possible, to add some context, I'm a Gen Zer whose first was computer was an old lenovo laptop (not a thinkpad sadly) that was awesome, also I agree about UEFI, replace with coreboot/libreboot or just use BIOS.
I liked the video for the thumbnail meme reference ..
I hope it's a reference....I hope
Oh shit, i didn't even notice that
I agree with you. I bought me a new laptop to replace me Thinkpad T430 because it was showing age and I was wanting something light for college. I'm surprise that Arch found my new laptop (HP Pavilion) wifi but my dad was wanting to switch Linux and he have a newer HP (year or two older) and Linux Mint didn't see the wifi driver so I had to find the driver and it was a pain to the point I about gave up till I finally found the wifi driver in github.
The biggest thing I miss from my Thinkpad is the keyboard I got used to it and how easy it was to upgrade. I still got to get used the keyboard on my new HP and my dad's HP it was a pain to replace his old HDD and RAM. How you replace the hard drive in your HP was about the same.
Had to use old Mom's laptop from over 10 years ago and while it's dual core Intel cpu with crappy integrated graphics, I was surprised to discover there are 3+ pcie interfaces exposed, two completely replaceable hard drives I replaced with SSDs and very compact motherboard. Pretty much perfect material for DIY routers, an ssh machine I used it for, or just basic internet browsing with modern Linux distro. Too bad old cpu means your are leaving compile times improvements on the table.

GRUB is bloat having to be manually installed when systemd-boot which is UEFI only already exists on systemd distros (I know you don't use it any more). It's just a single command to enable and presents a much simpler experience. Some older ThinkPads don't support booting into Linux via UEFI however.
Also, users of company-issue computers can be locked out of traditional BIOS just as easily.
