Okay..... So I pulled the laptop back apart and put the i5 back in and both RAM slots worked again. So several things could be wrong. Something might be wrong with the CPU, the laptop's BIOS and the CPU might not be playing well together, ect... I am not really sure what I am going to do at this point, because besides the memory issue everything is working great. I keep having to edit this comment because I keep running into conflicting evidence as to whether I can use a 16GB dimm in the T430. The i7 DOES support 32GB of RAM according to the Intel spec sheet (though that might not be referring to a 2X 16gb dimm config) but I am not sure if the T430 BIOS/chipset supports 16GB dimms. Some say yes and some people say no. Any input on this would be appreciated. Update: I just upgraded the T430 to the latest BIOS and that did not change anything (which was super easy, I am not sure where I read that it would be difficult, they were wrong). The top RAM slot still does not work not matter what configuration I try.
Just a theory... I recall reading somewhere, Thinkpads having stability issues when using Quad core-i7 cpus, it had something to do with the motherboard not being able to provide enough juice to the processor, and maybe that could affecting your Dimm slot as well :P
Yeah I was going to post that the rough non backlight is the safer option when it comes to germs as it has the antimicrobial coating on it compared to the backlight one where the coating is not there hence the difference in texture between the 2.
So the next question is, can the key caps be swapped over? Are the keys translucent through the marking, or is it just a backlight, in which case they might swap.
The T430S in 2023 is very cheap on Ebay now! This laptop I am typing on has the 3rd generation i5, (fast enough for me), 16 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, DVD Drive, screen perfect, Charger, Battery still holds a little charge. With Zorin OS, 16.2 Core, I can do everything I need! One can get those newer flat keyboard laptops, no panels for the RAM and Hard Drive, no DVD drive, i3, 8 GB RAM, 250 SSD for $399, Windows 11, (and we have a few), yet I am liking this laptop better that those, and it is over 12 years old!
@Polaris Lakewell yeah, it really sucks, I recently bought a t440p specifically because it had a socket, I don't plan on getting anything newer then that with exception to a framework laptop down the road once the t440p is either too slow or dies
@@alexf1515 an i5-4300m, but the t440p had multiple different factory options, any cpu made for Socket G3(FCPGA-946) should work, the highest end cpu is the i7-4940mx, but I don't recommend it for the t440p because it is has a 57w tdp and you'd need either a 135w or 170w ac adapter just to charge it, the best cpu to go with would be either the i7-4702mq or i7-4712mq, they both are 37w and are 4 core 8 thread, only downside is that for some dumb reason ebay sellers think they should be more expensive then the 47w equivalents the 4700mq or 4710mq, even thought the 4700mq and 4710mq are clocked higher, so best thing to do would be to wait for a great deal on either the 4702mq or 4712mq if you don't want to wait get the 47w cpus and undervolt them using throttlestop, there's also the 4800mq, 4810mq, 4900mq, and 4910mq which are all 47w don't go with the 57w cpus the t440p weren't designed for them
Actually the roughtness on the keys is the antimicrobial coating, which does not allow light to shine through. A lot of people hate it, but I think it rocks, love that textured feeling. As for the RAM, Lenovo site specifies that it supports up to 16Gb so I'd suggest to clear CMOS by taking out the cell battery after CPU swap. It may be some weird config stored in the BIOS that carries when you swap them.
soldered-on CPUs and RAM is a terrible trend that i wish would finally go away... but easy repairability is simply not "planned obsolescence" enough for them..... -_-
I have the t410s and the damn thing did the same thing with the same brand of RAM. I had a crucial stick of RAM and it wouldn't POST at all, I pulled a 4GB stick out of my M17x and boom - started right up. I got the laptop for $15 because it wasn't working, I was so excited when it turned out to just be a weird RAM incompatibility.
does anyone know if there's a limitation of how much RAM could actually be held in there like maybe only 8 gigabytes and you're trying to put in more than it can take I'm just wondering about that cuz I would like my ram to be more but right now I only have 8 gigabytes I have not opened up my computer yet to see if it's two sticks or one but I doubt it I think it's two sticks if you would have had a higher stick in there and might not function maybe that's just part of the configuration of this particular operating layout
2-1/2 years after this video was posted I bought a Thinkpad W520 with near identical specs to your post-upgrade T430. Cost was about $150, including shipping.
Hey, just wanted to drop by and say thanks. I'd been looking for a decent used or refurbished laptop to practice Pentesting and other infosec things, and based on your videos you got me looking seriously at the T430. I ended up finding one on eBay for $190, in really good condition, that came with a 256GB SSD and Windows 10 ( which i need for business), 1600x900 display, and I added a second SSD in the DVD drive to dual boot Kali Linux. I may add the backbit keyboard, will definitely upgrade to 16GB RAM...but otherwise I'm extremely happy with this model and will probably grab a refurbished T440 down the line that I can run Parot Linux on. Can't thank you enough for featuring this model as well as talking about other Lenovo's. They are really good refurb deals, and there's plenty of them out there,. Keep up the good work.
T440 has one slot for ram and a shit touchpad, I have one and its a flimsy slow pc. And the motherboard and wifi card have both been warrantied by Lenovo. Hopefully it lasts for a few more years.
Got a T430 with a spotless 1600x900 screen and brand new 6 cell genuine battery for ~158$, 2x8GB DDR3L for ~98$ and an i7-3210QM for 65$ shipped on ebay. And it's a really nice machine, especially for 320$, but I always use a dock and a 1080p external monitor at home, because I just cannot stand the crappy TN panel. And just ordered two black friday sale Kingston 480 gig ssds for 70$ a piece, planning on putting them in RAID1.
Most of these upgrades were marginal and not really worth it too. 5% better score in synthetics and an HD to HD+ panel instead of FHD, just don't make sense to me.
i happen to own a thinkpad t530, and my dad dropped it, so i took the opportunity to upgrade it to a FHD panel. the procedure for replacing the screen on the t530 is the same as on the t430. I also posted the original comment as a tip to people who are considering doing similar upgrades on their thinkpads
Only another thing it could be with the memory - DDR3 SODIMM's can potentially be two different voltages - 1.5 volts and 1.35 volts - if you mixed voltages between the SODIMM's they won't boot in the notebook (it won't pass the power on self test) - and I also realise that this video is now over a year old - so I hope you've now solved your issue :) - Nice Video btw
Very helpful video! Just got a T430 myself and stuck a 250gb 850 EVO in it as well as doubling the ram from 4GB to 8GB. I have ordered the 9 cell battery and am considering the add on "Slice" battery, however they are quite expensive here at around £70.
So, for those of you who have actually upgraded the CPU to a quad, you are saying that you have not had cooling issues? At all? That is my biggest concern and why I am still leaning toward i7-3520M. I know I won't see a huge performance kick, but the i7-3520M runs a bit cooler than the i5 my T430 came with. Note: to the naysayers: I have already moved to 500gb SSD and am maxed at 16GB of RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 Model F3-1600C9D-16GRSL). FYI: the RAM I use is great, but it runs a wee bit hot.
I have a thinkpad t440p that used to have a dual core i5 4300m. I wanted to upgrade to an quad i7 but I was also worried about overheating. I decided to give it a shot and I replaced the i5 with a quad core i7 4700mq, and I haven't had any issues with cooling. Heck, when I'm browsing the web or doing other light tasks the fan doesn't turn on at all.
I have an i7-3720qm (45W) in my t430. It is works fine with usual developer stuff. Sometimes in few cases it can hit the 100C and do throttling (also I use it in a docking station, that can affect airflow). I need to clean the cpu fan more often to keep it cool. You need at leas 90W power supply for charging. The 65W small one will not be recognised after upgrade to 4 core. Also you can choose from the 35W i7-6xxxqm cpu line, but those have no vt-d, this is why I chosed the 3720qm, it is the smallest 4 core with vt-d as I know (and it is like 2x i5-3320m)
@@azbesthu You know, according to the specs on the Intel website, the i7-3632QM( i7-3612QM) TDP 35W processor has the VT-X and VT-D you need. What do you think? :)
Its what I am thinking of doing with my T420 and keeping the 500gb hdd for storage while I toss in either a 128gb msata ssd or a 256gb one into the slot. AKA something like this would work perfectly for the msata slot in my t420 www.amazon.com/dp/B00ELQZCKW/
You can also use the mSATA SSD as a cache drive for the HDD using Intel Rapid Storage Technology/RST. I'm using it on my Alienware M14xR2 (my Sager NP7358 is busy getting completely ruined by the manufacturer and I got this gaylienware for $50 idc) and it helps a lot with boot times and frequently used programs. It'll help a lot more with a cache larger than 32gb though.
The 128gb I linked to is only $65 and is plenty of space for an OS or 2 and my T420 can use it as a boot drive. So yeah I would rather run the ssd as an OS/applications drive and the hdd as storage persnally.
The keyboard with more grip, aka the anti microbial keyboard the one that you liked is actually the better keyboard for resisting bacteria. Just wanted to let you know. Love the videos!
The non-back-lit keyboard has an anti-microbial coating that makes it resist contamination that might make you sick. Just sharing. Most people are swapping the other direction.
According to Lenovo, the best CPU you could buy for that notebook was the i7 3520M. That leads me to believe the CPU you bought is possibly just not compatible with the BIOS/chipset/mobo and lead to that compatibility issue. I have a T430 myself, and I love it! Might snag an i7 for it, just to keep things relevant. Oh, you've got a spare mini-PCI slot underneath the laptop; look into external GPU solutions, they exist! Or maybe an SSD.
Hi, I have t430 updated with i7, 16gbs ram, 1080 screen on the way with adapter and SSD. I just need to unlock the bios now. Anyway cool video and thanks for sharing.
What dock is that at 0:39? I like my Pro Series 3 but I don't think I'll ever have two DisplayPort or two DVI monitors, so one with a DVI and VGA connector would be good.
Is there a website or page that has a cross reference for a Lenovo Edge E535? I need to replace the track pad. I already have a replacement keyboard. I upped the RAM to 16GB. I would also like to upgrade the CPU to an AMD A8 quad core. Thanks, & good choice on the replacement battery. Not worried about a high end screen
Inspiring vid for this old guy. Just got a refurbed T430 to replace wife's WinXP Satellite. She'll never need more than the 8G but --- one thing came to mind about that slot mystery vis a vis the BIOS idea was the old Pentium criteria about memory bus speed. Probably a dinosaur of a suggestion since I am sure you matched the speed and parity specs. My big question though is whether or not you think the display change made a noticeable enough difference, for say, just plain old Photoshop tasks. Guessing that the Intel graphics is integrated. Would be nice to swap in a new card and run external monitor over 1600*900. Also appreciate the eBay refs. Very inspiring and motivating indeed. Thanks in advance.
Great work . Is it possible to swap old vintage motherboard by a new modren will keboard and screen works will it connect to modren motherboard or do they need adapter ot something else for example thinkpad 701c could be upgraded with modren motherboard?!
I have a near exact setup as yours, I bought a T430 for like 100 bucks, it was is dGPU version with the 1600x900 Display and backlit keyboard in perfect conditions with the Intel 180gb SSD. Almost immediately got the same CPU (the 3612QM) and some months later a new sealed docking station for very cheap (A long story where the seller was offering the 4338 model, sent me a a sealed 4337 and i was able to retrieve like 20% of the original cost because the seller didn't respond to my complaints) I'm even thinking on installing an eGPU (god I really love that laptop). Some days ago I bought an 8gb DDR3 HyperX RAM to upgrade from 12gb to 16gb as I needed more ram (I like to do AE stuff like motion graphics and Live2D). I had the same problem as you, changed the 4gb for the new 8gb stick, and when i tried to turn the laptop on, only a black screen. When I tried to put the original 4gb back in, it didn't worked either, so I was really worried that the decision of upgrading was going to end in a forced downgrade. After a lot of tests and changing the ram placement over and over, cleaning the board and the sticks and other stuff i did, it finally worked. I don't remember what was the final setup, but i think I installed the new ram on the top slot, and the old on the bottom. I never knew how and why all of that happened, but until now I haven't had any problems whatsoever, the laptop is working like a charm, and i promised myself never to touch the ram sticks ever again hahaha.
Have tried resetting the BIOS to defaults first? I've had that issue with my DELL E6220 with a ram upgrade initially. Resetting to defaults then setting the BIOS back up worked.
When doing an upgrade of memory or CPU I always remove the bios battery for at least 24 hours prior to installing the upgrade, when it's finished I put the battery back in, works all the time.
Is the T 430 the little brother of the T 530? It looks exactly like my T 530 which I got for free from my computer guy. I upgraded it to a 128 GB SSD boot disk,a 1 TB storage drive and a 128 GB SD card just for my GTA 5 install. also upped it to 16 GB DDR 3 RAM.
How would a Lenovo B480 do for basic productivity? I'm at school and need one to hold me over for the year. What can I upgrade in it? I also want to try Sony Vegas on it, so how would that do? I found it for $70 dollars, (2012 model) and I thought it was pretty good for 4GB DDR3 RAM.
Can someone explain me how Passmark works? On Passmark site I see the result for Intel Core i5-3230M: 2528 points. Yet in this video at 10:51 the result is over 4200 points. The same goes to Intel Core i7-3612QM. On Passmark site: 4426, on this vid: 6850. That's a serious difference. Where does it come from?
What i have found with the T430's RAM slots is that with me it only accepts two of the same brand and frequency, if your still using this AA try two identical sticks :) hope that helped.
Lets see how many times you can say eBay in the course of one video. Ok. seriously I like your videos. I have a T430 refurb. Its my favorite laptop. I used to work on IBM Thinkpads back in 1999.
Haha... I was literally JUST ABOUT to comment when you asked for suggestions, "try updating the bios" when you suggested that updating the bios was something that you had looked into. ;)
I have a T60 but I had 2 hard drives go out in 2 weeks with mine and I get keyboard errors stating there is a stuck key but there are no keys that look stuck.
I have the opportunity of buying one of these. Should I buy it even though I only want it because I love older laptops and not because I need it? The price tag is 199 euros for an i5 model with 8GB of memory
Hey! I just got that laptop! same price to lol. mine has the i5 3320M, 4GB ram, normal battery, and I threw in a 240gb SanDisk SSD. I did a bios update through the lenovo updater and it was seamless, just hit ok and plug it in to the wall! I plan to upgrade to 8GB ram and the backlit keyboard. Also look up 1920x1080 T430 screen mod sometime when you get a chance! great video as always
What about the backlit keyboard replacement? You didn't say anything about it, did it worked? I'm willing to change mine non-backlit to a backlit version. The connections are the same?
What specifications are the two sticks of RAM ? You keep saying DDR3 RAM but @ 8:36/14:41, the Crucial products are DDR3L (low voltage RAM 1.355v) which can run at either 1.35v or 1.5v. DDR3 RAM only run at 1.5v, if the laptop/i7 CPU only accept 1.5v RAM then it should be fine to combine DDR3 and DDR3L BUT if the laptop/i7 CPU only accepts 1.35v (DDR3L) then the conflict will cause the laptop not to Boot. Also if the laptop/i7 CPU accepts DDR3 1.5v RAM and the DDR3L stick has issue with conforming/switching to 1.5v then it will also not Boot. The final question is "How much do you trust that 'friend' not to have sold you a defective stick of RAM. Is your friendship worth more than 30 bucks ?
should i get t61 and upgrade it to max.. you know.. i just need it to watch some 480p yt videos.. browsing the web.. i need something for my home electronics workshop.. to connect printer and big cheap 720p or 1080p display.. and stuff.. pls answer me.. :)
am planing to fit c2d t9500 and 2x2gb 800mhz ddr2 ram.. ssd.. clean it good.. and i wanna ask you one more think.. what do you think about dockingstation?? :)
Hey importat question! Did you have issues charging your laptop with a 90W charger after you installed a quad core CPU? From what I have read online, it is possible that 90W are insufficient to properly charge a quad core swapped T430
The other possibility is the power adapter is insufficient to boot a quad core. I’d go that route before replacing the motherboard. A more powerful charger brick should do the job.
I put 24 gb of ram in my Latitude e7480 and I've got 12 in my T430. I can say it works pretty well. We use Mint 19 currently on mine. I love the fact it works out of the box without proprietary drivers. I am thinking about going to an i7 in mine too. I've got the 9 cell slice and I get 4 to 6 hours without much fuss, what's a few minutes?
be prepared for more heat caused by the i7. Especially when it also has an Nvidia optimus GPU on board. But even that works great under Mint. I have an T420 with FHD display, i7 and Nvidia Optimus. All of it works great under Linux Mint but damn this thing gets hot as heck if the processor gets used. Even with fresh thermal paste.
Just ran across this video so possibly you've worked thru all your issues by now. I have done similar upgrades in T4/520 4/530 laptops with no issues. Re: your one DIMM slot not working after your upgrades (if it worked before) my #1 culprit would be incompatible RAM. I try to use the same brand when installing multiple DIMMs, but not critical. I haven't run into this issue personally. I have run into one issue (on a single laptop). I replaced a bad screen with a known good 1600x900 screen but it starts becoming distorted. This clears up with an external monitor connected to the VGA slot. When disconnected from the VGA becomes distorted again. I was wondering if you or any of your subscribers had any solutions for this issue? Thanks.
I was gifted a Lenovo IdeaPad 110 (acl) model. I'm truly grateful for it but it's mega slow. Since covid hit, I'mjobless for right now but I was wondering would this Thinkpad 430 (with upgrades) be a good replacement? Or would you recommend a different model? I really would be using the laptop to browse the net, maybe work online(if I find online work), no video game playing, video conferencing (could purchase an external webcam with a better lens), editing/creating documents (OpenOffice) and RUclips/slash video watching sites (not much though since I have a tablet). Very cool channel by the way. I use to own a Lenovo x61t and loved it. Looking forward to your or anyone else comment that has some knowledge on this. Thank you
Hello AA, how do I know If my T430 is compatible with 9-Cell battery linked by you? Do I have to check anything in my laptop or being a T430 is just enough? I got this second hand T430 with 6cell battery and wanted to give it more autonomy! Thx!
So if you use a slice battery on the bottom of your computer will that affect the cooling of the computer? as you know when a laptop is not on a straight surface it tends to overheat and what I want to know is since I was planning on buying a cooling fan for the bottom of my laptop if I were to purchase the slice and use it that would prohibit me from using the cooling fan correct? Or is there a way around this issue?
Hey man! You didn't have any issue with the audio drivers? I've purchased this laptop some weeks ago and I can't seem to find 100% good audio drivers for Windows 10 in this laptop, I've tried the Lenovo System Updated, downloading the driver from lenovo's website, the only driver that seems "okay" is the default windows one, but whenever I restart the computer a few times it automatically installs the realtek drivers which don't work that great for me, I always end up getting some latency (sound and videos going offsync) and some weird noise when I change the volume in the volume slider (in the taskbar). The laptop came with Windows 7 installed and everything was great, this issue only showed up when I clean installed Windows 10.
Hi, Thanks for this video. It's been a while you post this video, but when you changed the 1366x768 screen by a 1600x900 one did you changed the cable too ? Best wishes
Did the upgrade a while ago. Has anyone faced any crackling/popping noises when they play any audio from the computer? I've tried everything and nothing seems to work. Bios is up to date, drivers are up to date, reinstalled windows, formatted hard drive, did a fresh install with no drivers still had issues. Been testing audio with this program that measures audio latency and it's been telling me the same thing, check drivers check bios. It runs great and all but man is that popping annoying. Thanks!
I've been having a i7-3820 for the last couple of years with artic silver and the delta heatsink. I ordered the the toshiba one currently because while gaming my temps were always close to 100. The toshiba hasn't arrived yet due to hurricane but what I was wondering should I spend the money for a i7-3840. The main thing is would the thermals be that much better or about the same? I'm using another thermal paste that I know will help but just wondering if I should spend all that money when on paper the two CPUs are pretty similar with the latter just being a tad newer and a slight bump faster. Thx anyway debating on this.
Hi! Thank you for the video. Could you kindly give link for the tool kit that you used? I want a nice toolkit that I can use for pretty much any kind of electronics repair. Were you able to get the other slot working? Also, do you not get bother by having a used laptop with scratches, blemishes, etc...or it does not bother you? Thank you for the video again.
hi, interesting video, i have got an old thinkpad t430s which has never let me down, has already got 16gb, i need to find out if htis model can produce 4k on my new wacom 4k tablet ? any help please ?
Hi, upgraded my t430 laptop with 1600x900 screen, 16gb ram, i7 qm CPU & backlit keyboard. Everything working as checked info & seems good. However, the AC Adapter now wont charge the battery while the machine is on. The charger works and powers laptop with no battery attached, the battery works with no AC Adapter attached & AC adapter will charge the battery while laptop is off. So do I need a higher wattage AC adapter? Current one 65w...advice is very welcome
just curious, What is your opinion of the Lenovo t61? just picked one up on the cheap (about 15 dollars) and I like it so far. I loaded Vista on it with very few issues.
maybe try and do a bios update? my guess is that the cpu isn't fully supported, and that maybe the bios microcode needs to be updated to fully support the CPU.
Can you please make a guide on getting the most optimal power management on your thinkpad ? This is the only reason i'm still using windows on my laptop at the moment...
Does it become hot or have any problem after upgrade the cpu? Dual core cpu has the TDP of 35W and quad core is 45W. I'm wondering if i could upgrade my Acer 4749z with i7 2620M to i7 2720QM
I do miss the old IBM versions, though. Where the current Thinkpads are tank-like, the old one's were actual tanks. They took beatings like I have not seen any modern off-the-shelf laptops take.
I got T400 for free from my office. It's in quite bad condition (lots of scratches, no battery) - but I bought a new battery for it, upgraded the RAM and replaced the HDD with 120GB SSD. It works great. I only use it for office use, performance is snappy. My fave thing about this laptop aside from the built quality is the keyboard. Best keyboard I ever used in a laptop
I have one but its ass some keys stoped working fans revcing like a car and it overheats and cpu usage just goes high can't wait to get rid of this potatoe
did you fix the RAM issue? I had problems upgrading to DDR3 non L on a laptop, I returned the DDR3 and picked up a DDR3L instead (low voltage .. 1.35v) and worked..
Hey i am looking at getting one of those and was looking up processor options and I was wondering if there was any reason you did not go with the 3612qm that seems to be the best 35w option but was wondering if it was just price and or available at the time and i assume the 45w and 55w would not be an option
i'd like to ask something for you you just replace teh Processor core i5 to processor core i7? without chaching everything? if i just have Memory RAM 4 GB 2 stick, it can be use in Processor core i7?
You are really expert man! Got a question for you. I bought a second hand T530 Core i7 3740qm 16GB RAM few days ago. The laptop was running fine with just battery upon arrival (over 5 hours of basic usage like web, youtube...so battery seem decent too). As soon as I put into charging, it was fine for about 30 minutes then it just went dead. I can smell an odour coming out around the power socket area and near the battery area when I took the battery off to have a look around. Not the laptop can't be turned on at all with our without battery. What do you think it could be?
Really? I got 170Watt power supply :) I feel the motherboard could be fried. I trued all the power button trick to clear the static thing they talked about. Although, I was about to try remove CMOS but its still within 14 days so I returned it to them to either get that fix or replace it LOL. Thank you though Michael.
Nice video about upgrading a Lenovo ! Speaking of Lenovo and upgrades i have two Lenovo laptop: a z50-70 (I7 4510U and 820M) and a z50-75 (AMD FX7500) and i would like to know if it was possible to upgrade the CPU ? I think it's soldered to the motherboard but i'm not sure of that ...
Vid is awesome, quick question, i have a t430s, supposedly the i5 processor is soldered in, can i replace the motherboard with an i7? is this the solution to make it faster? Thanks for your time
thank you, I have a 430s I bought and just ordered the keyboard, already have the 4 core with 8 cache (and 16gbs of ram. thanks for the links. I'm looking over my screen now to look at upgrading. thank you
Hey, how you doing, that t430s motherboard was soldered to the chip; finally got t430, I know it's been a while. Same thing happened to me with the i7 and only one ram slot. I took out the back one and booted and it seen the other, slapped the one back in and it seen both. Hopefully it stays or doesn't overheat. Anyway thanks for sharing.
The top RAM slot still does not work not matter what configuration I try.
it could be a flaky memory controller in the cpu
have you updated the bios yet?
Nope.
AA Computers and Technology can't hurt to try
Just a theory...
I recall reading somewhere, Thinkpads having stability issues when using Quad core-i7 cpus, it had something to do with the motherboard not being able to provide enough juice to the processor, and maybe that could affecting your Dimm slot as well :P
I'm going to use this as a disassembly guide for the T430 because he told me to
first time here. enjoying your 100mph talking speed, somehow i can follow it even while multitasking. that deserves a subscribe in my book.
2nd comment: i dont see you using any jumpcuts, so you're talking 100mph in a straight shot.. thats amazing. not to mention easier on the editor.
weird flex but ok (and true somehow lol)
The rough coating on the non-backlit keyboard is actually an antimicrobial coating.
Yeah I was going to post that the rough non backlight is the safer option when it comes to germs as it has the antimicrobial coating on it compared to the backlight one where the coating is not there hence the difference in texture between the 2.
Really? Well now I know! Thanks!
So the next question is, can the key caps be swapped over? Are the keys translucent through the marking, or is it just a backlight, in which case they might swap.
I don't think so
I have a T430S which came with backlit keys. They are translucent through the markings but are not removable/swappable.
It's nice to see relatively modern laptops still having sockets so you can replace their CPU
is there any processor socket to be considered in laptop before we changing the processor? or before buy a new one?
T430 Produccion Año 2012 Y AUN ES MAS RAPIDA QUE MODELOS 2021
@Polaris Lakewell yeah, it really sucks, I recently bought a t440p specifically because it had a socket, I don't plan on getting anything newer then that with exception to a framework laptop down the road once the t440p is either too slow or dies
@@ajddavid452 What processor was installed and what is the maximum supported in T440p?
I do love old laptops as they can actually be almost totally upgraded (especially the cpu as most modern laptops have soldered cpus)
Correction: most modern laptops have soldered EVERYTHING
soldered-on CPUs and RAM is a terrible trend that i wish would finally go away... but easy repairability is simply not "planned obsolescence" enough for them..... -_-
I have the t410s and the damn thing did the same thing with the same brand of RAM.
I knew it, I was just leaving a comment about how it's probably just a compatibility issues linked to the 2 different brands of ram cards
@@Anjanya1948 He mentions in the video that this laptop supports 16 gb ram, and the new cpu supports 32, so its not that
I just got this model yesterday . It’s so cool in 2017 love
I just ordered mine yesterday t430 and 2020 I love it lol
2-1/2 years after this video was posted I bought a Thinkpad W520 with near identical
specs to your post-upgrade T430. Cost was about $150, including shipping.
I've purchased my t430 1 month ago and I plan to make the same updates as you
ty for the video
The OCD in me wants to take a microfiber cloth and some alcohol/water spray to that thing.
I thought the same thing.
16GB RAM works without problems? At what frequency?
ive replaced the screen on these thinkpads before. it is actually easier to replace the panel, not the whole lid
Most of these upgrades were marginal and not really worth it too. 5% better score in synthetics and an HD to HD+ panel instead of FHD, just don't make sense to me.
See: www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Replacing_T430_screen_with_a_better_one
i happen to own a thinkpad t530, and my dad dropped it, so i took the
opportunity to upgrade it to a FHD panel. the procedure for replacing
the screen on the t530 is the same as on the t430. I also posted the original comment as a tip to people who are considering doing similar upgrades on their thinkpads
Hey I have an ThinkPad e530 :D
Thanks, because that's what I'd like to do but was wondering if that would work.
I was issued a T430 for work. It is a pretty serviceable machine. I might buy one to be my personal rig.
this comment aged like milk!
@@SKDYCATwhy?
Only another thing it could be with the memory - DDR3 SODIMM's can potentially be two different voltages - 1.5 volts and 1.35 volts - if you mixed voltages between the SODIMM's they won't boot in the notebook (it won't pass the power on self test) - and I also realise that this video is now over a year old - so I hope you've now solved your issue :) - Nice Video btw
im thinking that its the bios thats maby not upgraded for that processer to use duel channel
Very helpful video! Just got a T430 myself and stuck a 250gb 850 EVO in it as well as doubling the ram from 4GB to 8GB. I have ordered the 9 cell battery and am considering the add on "Slice" battery, however they are quite expensive here at around £70.
I know I seen some other forums about the ram issue working not working. hopefully you can get down to the bottom of it. thanks for sharing
Note: to the naysayers: I have already moved to 500gb SSD and am maxed at 16GB of
RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 Model F3-1600C9D-16GRSL).
Random Tech this is good to know. Thanks for sharing. I will consider this if I decide to invest further in the T430
The 2 sticks of RAM must have the same clock frequency, exactly the same. Great video💨🌻
you could add an ssd using the msata slot next to the ram
Its what I am thinking of doing with my T420 and keeping the 500gb hdd for storage while I toss in either a 128gb msata ssd or a 256gb one into the slot.
AKA something like this would work perfectly for the msata slot in my t420
www.amazon.com/dp/B00ELQZCKW/
Thanks for the video! I actually didnt know you could do these upgrades to a laptop and now I really want to give it a try
The non-back-lit keyboard has an anti-microbial coating that makes it resist contamination that might make you sick. Just sharing. Most people are swapping the other direction.
Wait what? I'd assume that this would be a joke on anything else, but this is an IBM style Thinkpad
So I got a T530i a few days ago. Going to put in the W530 motherboard, FHD display, 32GB RAM, 9-cell battery and i7-3940XM. Wish me luck!
Just got this model, and I can say, it's as good as, if not better, compared to some modern laptops, especially with its upgradability.
Is it just me or do I hear the sound of a macro lens autofocusing whenever you focus the camera?
Im watching this video on my t430 that came in the mail today, the speakers are amazing (actully came with better screen)
how about re-install the i5 and get back your 16gb of ram :) 200 plus score in cpu is it Worth it the loss of a slot?
Great work . Is it possible to swap old vintage motherboard by a new modren will keboard and screen works will it connect to modren motherboard or do they need adapter ot something else for example thinkpad 701c could be upgraded with modren motherboard?!
i used this video as a disassembly guide and my laptop is on fire what do i do now?
you should immediately send an email to the fire department to call for help.
what command you used in 10:15 to display detailed information about memory modules?
Hello. Now 16GB RAM works without problems at T430? At what frequency?
watching this on my Lenovo ThinkPad T430
watching it on ThinkPad P51
was watching the first part on my T530, now on my phone
Have tried resetting the BIOS to defaults first? I've had that issue with my DELL E6220 with a ram upgrade initially. Resetting to defaults then setting the BIOS back up worked.
Yup, that was the first thing I tried XD
Haha... I was literally JUST ABOUT to comment when you asked for suggestions, "try updating the bios" when you suggested that updating the bios was something that you had looked into. ;)
Did you try cleaning the pads on the base of the CPU? it would only take one dirty one not making contact to knock out a memory slot.
Great vid. I'd love to see one about the T420! (maybe including coreboot and an i7-3740QM if possible)
should i get t61 and upgrade it to max.. you know.. i just need it to watch some 480p yt videos.. browsing the web.. i need something for my home electronics workshop.. to connect printer and big cheap 720p or 1080p display.. and stuff.. pls answer me.. :)
am planing to fit c2d t9500 and 2x2gb 800mhz ddr2 ram.. ssd.. clean it good.. and i wanna ask you one more think.. what do you think about dockingstation??
Thank you
Any t340 with Nvidia cards
I use to have the T60, now I have the T430!
Hi,
Thanks for this video.
It's been a while you post this video, but when you changed the 1366x768 screen by a 1600x900 one did you changed the cable too ?
Best wishes
Can you do a upgrade video for w530?
Did the upgrade a while ago. Has anyone faced any crackling/popping noises when they play any audio from the computer? I've tried everything and nothing seems to work. Bios is up to date, drivers are up to date, reinstalled windows, formatted hard drive, did a fresh install with no drivers still had issues. Been testing audio with this program that measures audio latency and it's been telling me the same thing, check drivers check bios. It runs great and all but man is that popping annoying. Thanks!
is there any processor socket type that we considered before we buy a processor?
I've been having a i7-3820 for the last couple of years with artic silver and the delta heatsink. I ordered the the toshiba one currently because while gaming my temps were always close to 100. The toshiba hasn't arrived yet due to hurricane but what I was wondering should I spend the money for a i7-3840. The main thing is would the thermals be that much better or about the same? I'm using another thermal paste that I know will help but just wondering if I should spend all that money when on paper the two CPUs are pretty similar with the latter just being a tad newer and a slight bump faster. Thx anyway debating on this.
I have a w530 i7, 32 gbs of ram but the graphics card is not the best and I would like to see a tutorial to replace it
the slice battery gives you some pretty good ergonomics actually.
Ive had mine for 7 years, since 2011, and it’s still banging it’s super fast
Gonna update you there pal.... ever since the Win10... Its now so slow.
@Real_OSHA_Unsafety_Engineer if you dont want it slow, dont use windows and use linux. If you dont want linux, deal with it ig
Apparently, you need the 90W charger. A 65W charger won't charge the higher power CPU.
just curious, What is your opinion of the Lenovo t61? just picked one up on the cheap (about 15 dollars) and I like it so far.
If you could suggest all the parts for a modest $1500 PC build.
these thinkpad laptops were made to last forever :D
i have X230
I do miss the old IBM versions, though. Where the current Thinkpads are tank-like, the old one's were actual tanks. They took beatings like I have not seen any modern off-the-shelf laptops take.
I got T400 for free from my office. It's in quite bad condition (lots of scratches, no battery) - but I bought a new battery for it, upgraded the RAM and replaced the HDD with 120GB SSD. It works great. I only use it for office use, performance is snappy. My fave thing about this laptop aside from the built quality is the keyboard. Best keyboard I ever used in a laptop

did you fix the RAM issue? I had problems upgrading to DDR3 non L on a laptop, I returned the DDR3 and picked up a DDR3L instead (low voltage .. 1.35v) and worked..
Hey i am looking at getting one of those and was looking up processor options and I was wondering if there was any reason you did not go with the 3612qm that seems to be the best 35w option but was wondering if it was just price and or available at the time and i assume the 45w and 55w would not be an option
can we still buy a 9 cell and a backlit keyboard for our t430's ? i live in germany rn and can't find it in stock.
I know this is an old video! But did you flash the bios to current one? I am upgrading a T420 i5 to an i7. I flashed first!
I have aT520, I connected to a 24 inch TV, but it runs slow even though I have a SSD. Why you think it runs slow, not enough ram? Graphics card?
i'd like to ask something for you
you just replace teh Processor core i5 to processor core i7? without chaching everything?
if i just have Memory RAM 4 GB 2 stick, it can be use in Processor core i7?
Man, this video makes me want to buy that laptop instead of latest one. I hope i see one as cheap as that
please show us how you have upgraded the laptop
Is it possible to do this for the T420? Mainly upgrading cpu, display, etc. I have an i5,8gb ram,ssd
How to upgrade processor for Lenovo Thinkpad t440p ?
Hi is it possible to install an 3720qm on this machine? Or on a t440?
Vid is awesome, quick question, i have a t430s, supposedly the i5 processor is soldered in, can i replace the motherboard with an i7? is this the solution to make it faster? Thanks for your time
thank you, I have a 430s I bought and just ordered the keyboard, already have the 4 core with 8 cache (and 16gbs of ram. thanks for the links. I'm looking over my screen now to look at upgrading. thank you
which 4 core did you use, whats the best or highest that the t430 will take
Hey, how you doing, that t430s motherboard was soldered to the chip; finally got t430, I know it's been a while. Same thing happened to me with the i7 and only one ram slot. I took out the back one and booted and it seen the other, slapped the one back in and it seen both. Hopefully it stays or doesn't overheat. Anyway thanks for sharing.
