Okay..... So I pulled the laptop back apart and put the i5 back in and both RAM slots worked again. So several things could be wrong. Something might be wrong with the CPU, the laptop's BIOS and the CPU might not be playing well together, ect... I am not really sure what I am going to do at this point, because besides the memory issue everything is working great. I keep having to edit this comment because I keep running into conflicting evidence as to whether I can use a 16GB dimm in the T430. The i7 DOES support 32GB of RAM according to the Intel spec sheet (though that might not be referring to a 2X 16gb dimm config) but I am not sure if the T430 BIOS/chipset supports 16GB dimms. Some say yes and some people say no. Any input on this would be appreciated. Update: I just upgraded the T430 to the latest BIOS and that did not change anything (which was super easy, I am not sure where I read that it would be difficult, they were wrong). The top RAM slot still does not work not matter what configuration I try.
Just a theory... I recall reading somewhere, Thinkpads having stability issues when using Quad core-i7 cpus, it had something to do with the motherboard not being able to provide enough juice to the processor, and maybe that could affecting your Dimm slot as well :P
@Polaris Lakewell yeah, it really sucks, I recently bought a t440p specifically because it had a socket, I don't plan on getting anything newer then that with exception to a framework laptop down the road once the t440p is either too slow or dies
@@alexf1515 an i5-4300m, but the t440p had multiple different factory options, any cpu made for Socket G3(FCPGA-946) should work, the highest end cpu is the i7-4940mx, but I don't recommend it for the t440p because it is has a 57w tdp and you'd need either a 135w or 170w ac adapter just to charge it, the best cpu to go with would be either the i7-4702mq or i7-4712mq, they both are 37w and are 4 core 8 thread, only downside is that for some dumb reason ebay sellers think they should be more expensive then the 47w equivalents the 4700mq or 4710mq, even thought the 4700mq and 4710mq are clocked higher, so best thing to do would be to wait for a great deal on either the 4702mq or 4712mq if you don't want to wait get the 47w cpus and undervolt them using throttlestop, there's also the 4800mq, 4810mq, 4900mq, and 4910mq which are all 47w don't go with the 57w cpus the t440p weren't designed for them
Yeah I was going to post that the rough non backlight is the safer option when it comes to germs as it has the antimicrobial coating on it compared to the backlight one where the coating is not there hence the difference in texture between the 2.
So the next question is, can the key caps be swapped over? Are the keys translucent through the marking, or is it just a backlight, in which case they might swap.
soldered-on CPUs and RAM is a terrible trend that i wish would finally go away... but easy repairability is simply not "planned obsolescence" enough for them..... -_-
Actually the roughtness on the keys is the antimicrobial coating, which does not allow light to shine through. A lot of people hate it, but I think it rocks, love that textured feeling. As for the RAM, Lenovo site specifies that it supports up to 16Gb so I'd suggest to clear CMOS by taking out the cell battery after CPU swap. It may be some weird config stored in the BIOS that carries when you swap them.
I have the t410s and the damn thing did the same thing with the same brand of RAM. I had a crucial stick of RAM and it wouldn't POST at all, I pulled a 4GB stick out of my M17x and boom - started right up. I got the laptop for $15 because it wasn't working, I was so excited when it turned out to just be a weird RAM incompatibility.
does anyone know if there's a limitation of how much RAM could actually be held in there like maybe only 8 gigabytes and you're trying to put in more than it can take I'm just wondering about that cuz I would like my ram to be more but right now I only have 8 gigabytes I have not opened up my computer yet to see if it's two sticks or one but I doubt it I think it's two sticks if you would have had a higher stick in there and might not function maybe that's just part of the configuration of this particular operating layout
2-1/2 years after this video was posted I bought a Thinkpad W520 with near identical specs to your post-upgrade T430. Cost was about $150, including shipping.
Most of these upgrades were marginal and not really worth it too. 5% better score in synthetics and an HD to HD+ panel instead of FHD, just don't make sense to me.
i happen to own a thinkpad t530, and my dad dropped it, so i took the opportunity to upgrade it to a FHD panel. the procedure for replacing the screen on the t530 is the same as on the t430. I also posted the original comment as a tip to people who are considering doing similar upgrades on their thinkpads
Hey, just wanted to drop by and say thanks. I'd been looking for a decent used or refurbished laptop to practice Pentesting and other infosec things, and based on your videos you got me looking seriously at the T430. I ended up finding one on eBay for $190, in really good condition, that came with a 256GB SSD and Windows 10 ( which i need for business), 1600x900 display, and I added a second SSD in the DVD drive to dual boot Kali Linux. I may add the backbit keyboard, will definitely upgrade to 16GB RAM...but otherwise I'm extremely happy with this model and will probably grab a refurbished T440 down the line that I can run Parot Linux on. Can't thank you enough for featuring this model as well as talking about other Lenovo's. They are really good refurb deals, and there's plenty of them out there,. Keep up the good work.
T440 has one slot for ram and a shit touchpad, I have one and its a flimsy slow pc. And the motherboard and wifi card have both been warrantied by Lenovo. Hopefully it lasts for a few more years.
The T430S in 2023 is very cheap on Ebay now! This laptop I am typing on has the 3rd generation i5, (fast enough for me), 16 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, DVD Drive, screen perfect, Charger, Battery still holds a little charge. With Zorin OS, 16.2 Core, I can do everything I need! One can get those newer flat keyboard laptops, no panels for the RAM and Hard Drive, no DVD drive, i3, 8 GB RAM, 250 SSD for $399, Windows 11, (and we have a few), yet I am liking this laptop better that those, and it is over 12 years old!
Got a T430 with a spotless 1600x900 screen and brand new 6 cell genuine battery for ~158$, 2x8GB DDR3L for ~98$ and an i7-3210QM for 65$ shipped on ebay. And it's a really nice machine, especially for 320$, but I always use a dock and a 1080p external monitor at home, because I just cannot stand the crappy TN panel. And just ordered two black friday sale Kingston 480 gig ssds for 70$ a piece, planning on putting them in RAID1.
Very helpful video! Just got a T430 myself and stuck a 250gb 850 EVO in it as well as doubling the ram from 4GB to 8GB. I have ordered the 9 cell battery and am considering the add on "Slice" battery, however they are quite expensive here at around £70.
I do miss the old IBM versions, though. Where the current Thinkpads are tank-like, the old one's were actual tanks. They took beatings like I have not seen any modern off-the-shelf laptops take.
I got T400 for free from my office. It's in quite bad condition (lots of scratches, no battery) - but I bought a new battery for it, upgraded the RAM and replaced the HDD with 120GB SSD. It works great. I only use it for office use, performance is snappy. My fave thing about this laptop aside from the built quality is the keyboard. Best keyboard I ever used in a laptop
I have one but its ass some keys stoped working fans revcing like a car and it overheats and cpu usage just goes high can't wait to get rid of this potatoe
Only another thing it could be with the memory - DDR3 SODIMM's can potentially be two different voltages - 1.5 volts and 1.35 volts - if you mixed voltages between the SODIMM's they won't boot in the notebook (it won't pass the power on self test) - and I also realise that this video is now over a year old - so I hope you've now solved your issue :) - Nice Video btw
So, for those of you who have actually upgraded the CPU to a quad, you are saying that you have not had cooling issues? At all? That is my biggest concern and why I am still leaning toward i7-3520M. I know I won't see a huge performance kick, but the i7-3520M runs a bit cooler than the i5 my T430 came with. Note: to the naysayers: I have already moved to 500gb SSD and am maxed at 16GB of RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 Model F3-1600C9D-16GRSL). FYI: the RAM I use is great, but it runs a wee bit hot.
I have a thinkpad t440p that used to have a dual core i5 4300m. I wanted to upgrade to an quad i7 but I was also worried about overheating. I decided to give it a shot and I replaced the i5 with a quad core i7 4700mq, and I haven't had any issues with cooling. Heck, when I'm browsing the web or doing other light tasks the fan doesn't turn on at all.
I have an i7-3720qm (45W) in my t430. It is works fine with usual developer stuff. Sometimes in few cases it can hit the 100C and do throttling (also I use it in a docking station, that can affect airflow). I need to clean the cpu fan more often to keep it cool. You need at leas 90W power supply for charging. The 65W small one will not be recognised after upgrade to 4 core. Also you can choose from the 35W i7-6xxxqm cpu line, but those have no vt-d, this is why I chosed the 3720qm, it is the smallest 4 core with vt-d as I know (and it is like 2x i5-3320m)
@@azbesthu You know, according to the specs on the Intel website, the i7-3632QM( i7-3612QM) TDP 35W processor has the VT-X and VT-D you need. What do you think? :)
The keyboard with more grip, aka the anti microbial keyboard the one that you liked is actually the better keyboard for resisting bacteria. Just wanted to let you know. Love the videos!
According to Lenovo, the best CPU you could buy for that notebook was the i7 3520M. That leads me to believe the CPU you bought is possibly just not compatible with the BIOS/chipset/mobo and lead to that compatibility issue. I have a T430 myself, and I love it! Might snag an i7 for it, just to keep things relevant. Oh, you've got a spare mini-PCI slot underneath the laptop; look into external GPU solutions, they exist! Or maybe an SSD.
Its what I am thinking of doing with my T420 and keeping the 500gb hdd for storage while I toss in either a 128gb msata ssd or a 256gb one into the slot. AKA something like this would work perfectly for the msata slot in my t420 www.amazon.com/dp/B00ELQZCKW/
You can also use the mSATA SSD as a cache drive for the HDD using Intel Rapid Storage Technology/RST. I'm using it on my Alienware M14xR2 (my Sager NP7358 is busy getting completely ruined by the manufacturer and I got this gaylienware for $50 idc) and it helps a lot with boot times and frequently used programs. It'll help a lot more with a cache larger than 32gb though.
The 128gb I linked to is only $65 and is plenty of space for an OS or 2 and my T420 can use it as a boot drive. So yeah I would rather run the ssd as an OS/applications drive and the hdd as storage persnally.
The non-back-lit keyboard has an anti-microbial coating that makes it resist contamination that might make you sick. Just sharing. Most people are swapping the other direction.
It's clearly pronounced "MAte", not "Maté" in Spanish, because it's a spanish word. Some original developers were from Uruguay and Argentina, and half of the tools have spanish names, like "Hoja" (leaf) or "Caja" (box) It's a really common herbal beverage, like tea, but bitter. So no, the developers don't want you to pronounce it like some weird french word. Anyway, cool video, mate (as in "british" for dude). Cheers from Spain
Hi, I have t430 updated with i7, 16gbs ram, 1080 screen on the way with adapter and SSD. I just need to unlock the bios now. Anyway cool video and thanks for sharing.
Haha... I was literally JUST ABOUT to comment when you asked for suggestions, "try updating the bios" when you suggested that updating the bios was something that you had looked into. ;)
Lets see how many times you can say eBay in the course of one video. Ok. seriously I like your videos. I have a T430 refurb. Its my favorite laptop. I used to work on IBM Thinkpads back in 1999.
I have a near exact setup as yours, I bought a T430 for like 100 bucks, it was is dGPU version with the 1600x900 Display and backlit keyboard in perfect conditions with the Intel 180gb SSD. Almost immediately got the same CPU (the 3612QM) and some months later a new sealed docking station for very cheap (A long story where the seller was offering the 4338 model, sent me a a sealed 4337 and i was able to retrieve like 20% of the original cost because the seller didn't respond to my complaints) I'm even thinking on installing an eGPU (god I really love that laptop). Some days ago I bought an 8gb DDR3 HyperX RAM to upgrade from 12gb to 16gb as I needed more ram (I like to do AE stuff like motion graphics and Live2D). I had the same problem as you, changed the 4gb for the new 8gb stick, and when i tried to turn the laptop on, only a black screen. When I tried to put the original 4gb back in, it didn't worked either, so I was really worried that the decision of upgrading was going to end in a forced downgrade. After a lot of tests and changing the ram placement over and over, cleaning the board and the sticks and other stuff i did, it finally worked. I don't remember what was the final setup, but i think I installed the new ram on the top slot, and the old on the bottom. I never knew how and why all of that happened, but until now I haven't had any problems whatsoever, the laptop is working like a charm, and i promised myself never to touch the ram sticks ever again hahaha.
Inspiring vid for this old guy. Just got a refurbed T430 to replace wife's WinXP Satellite. She'll never need more than the 8G but --- one thing came to mind about that slot mystery vis a vis the BIOS idea was the old Pentium criteria about memory bus speed. Probably a dinosaur of a suggestion since I am sure you matched the speed and parity specs. My big question though is whether or not you think the display change made a noticeable enough difference, for say, just plain old Photoshop tasks. Guessing that the Intel graphics is integrated. Would be nice to swap in a new card and run external monitor over 1600*900. Also appreciate the eBay refs. Very inspiring and motivating indeed. Thanks in advance.
When doing an upgrade of memory or CPU I always remove the bios battery for at least 24 hours prior to installing the upgrade, when it's finished I put the battery back in, works all the time.
Hey! I just got that laptop! same price to lol. mine has the i5 3320M, 4GB ram, normal battery, and I threw in a 240gb SanDisk SSD. I did a bios update through the lenovo updater and it was seamless, just hit ok and plug it in to the wall! I plan to upgrade to 8GB ram and the backlit keyboard. Also look up 1920x1080 T430 screen mod sometime when you get a chance! great video as always
thank you, I have a 430s I bought and just ordered the keyboard, already have the 4 core with 8 cache (and 16gbs of ram. thanks for the links. I'm looking over my screen now to look at upgrading. thank you
I mean you say its not a gaming machine, but frankly this technology is really impressive. You basically get to use one of the best designed laptops of all time with upgrades for modern use. You can definitely play some games on here. My guess is you can run gameboy emulator and even DS emulator on this machine. And correct me if I'm wrong but it should be able to run Minecraft as well with quite low settings and an optimization mod that increases performance a lot. In fact that optimization mod allows you to turn on more things to make the game run faster.
Flashing the BiOS is a risk and if done incorrectly, it can brick your laptop. Do that if there’s no alternative to upgrading the firmware to get the Thinkpad up and running.
Hello from 2023, I bought mine 5 years ago and installed 500Gb SSD, i7 cpu, 16Gb RAM and backlit UK keyboard. It's my main machine using it daily for 8-10 hours. I've just taken it apart for good clean and 1Tb SSD and Win11 upgrade. Ready for another 5 years work😊
You absolutely need to upgrade the bios... I have a t420, which came with an i5 2540m.. Now has an i7 3630qm... 4C/8T ... went up 10 watts, but the chipset can handle the entire gamut of 2nd and 3rd gen i5/7 cpus... all of them.. .even the extreme series. These machines simply didn't offer them. They also claim far less max ram than they not only can handle stock, but can handle even more after a cpu, but more importantly, BIOS upgrade. You MUST update the bios to a modified version... one with the micro code for the qm cpus if not 3rd gen (if using) architecture. Your ram will work again, you will be able to use dual channel, which is super important, and should always be preferred over single stick solutions... But most importantly, your scores were poop, and will improve vastly. I went from a 3800 passmark to a 7600, thats the difference you should be seeing... and if going 3rd gen from 2nd, you'll also gain intel HD 4000 IGP over the older 3000.... not that any intel IGP is good... but this upgrade is noticeable to say the least, and without the bios update, you won't see any of these improvements... actually, it will be of a hindrance (the cpu upgrade) overall than anything.
Brett Prior Which BIOS is the “right” modified one? Where would you get it? And have you tried to put a T420 (classic thinkpad) keyboard instead of the new 7-row one. Thank you
Your E6410 is a couple of gens older then his T430. and my T420 sits between the 2 gens lol. But yeah these laptops are built like tanks and can take a beating and still keep on ticking.
Montisaquadeis Agreed! I would rather have something that is powerful and durable than a new flimsy little fanless laptop. Not to mention how repairable these are!
I got my T420 for roughly $300 $220 for the laptop and $70 for a brand new lenovo 9cell battery. Beats out any brand new $300 laptop in both specs since most of then have atom based celerons aka N2840 for an example and in durability. I can beat someone to death with this T420 and have it sill work perfectly fine afterwards NOT so much with those new $300 laptops.
Montisaquadeis So true! anything in this pricepoint brand new is going to be either a chromebook, or an utterly garbage windows laptop. Part of the magic in electronics and computers is the depreciation. Our thinkpads and latitiudes would have cost $1000 or more back in the day, but now they can be had for less than half that cost. Technology really hasnt changed all that much, other than gpu's and power consumption. But who gives a shit when youve got a 9 cell battery? :D
Fat Max Yeah the reason I plan on snagging a Sager NP8155 is becuase of the upgrade in GPU becuase I am a gamer and my nvs 4200m sucks for anything newer then mid 2000s while the cpu could easily handle newer titles. I need to save even more money then what I currently have to get the new laptop. the i5 in the t420 itself is fine in every day tasks but i just need the newer gpu.
So sad that apparently you've got an i7 with a messed up memory controller. I almost got a T430 but went for a used T420 just because it was cheaper here in Brazil. I love my T420, I use it as it came from the seller (got it used, and the guy bought a bunch from a company), with 4gb ddr3, 320gb HDD and i5 2520m. It's an excellent machine for me (programming, watching movies/anime, web browsing). Since I use linux mint, RAM is no problem :)
I’d take it to a computer shop and let the techs test various RAM configurations. One of the channels looks like its blown and the other works. So you may need a repair.
The Socket G2 motherboards are really picky about having exactly matched Ram modules. I had the same problem. I put in two exactly matched Kingston modules and,,,, WOOHOO! The not-so-matched sticks went to a good cause on another machine.
Rather than mess around with the laptop cpu, I prefer to just get the W520/530 and get the ram and ssd, they won't cost more than $500 if you look for it.
Where's the fun in that? LOL. I agree with you, but I think half the fun of playing with computers is pushing particular models to their limits. It's like people who turn old VW bugs into dragsters. There is something exciting about the fact that you could potentially just bonk the whole thing.
in regards to graphics you can get a EXP GDC v8.0 or 9.0 to enhance the graphics of the machine with a external GPU. get the dell power supply with it instead of a chunky Desktop PSU. i have one and it allows me to fully utilize my l420 Processor of course i upgraded my laptops 65 watt power adapter to a lenovo 90watt and it runs like a beast.
OK my humble suggestions: 1 - Update the BIOS 2 - Ensure the RA are both the same "speed"...(1333 ; 12800, 1666 etc.) 3 - Try booting with no ram in it at all.
I liked when you said..."oh so sad"...I bet it was disappointing. I have a T430 coming within a couple weeks and Ill be doing just about what you did with your rig. Looking forward.. Ill be running Linux distro..Im coming from big time OS X household...wanting to break out of osx even tho I love it
I had the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 3537 i5 4200 CPU - GPU 8670m - 8gb ram - 120gb ssd - cady 500GB .... I've solved the problem by what I found two compatible ram and everything works as it should :)
If you install the wrong RAM, it will refuse to boot. Check your original DDR RAM and see what it says on the label. If the specs between the original and the new are listed differently, there will be an issue. A PC3 is not the same as PC3L. If you don’t pay attention, your laptop is going to reject what’s installed.
the new keyboards are nice to type on but the layout is bad. With some modification and an embedded controller flash you can fit the t420 keyboard onto the t430
as for the memory issue if you swap the cpu back in and both slots work again it means that there is an issue with the memory controller in the 3612qm you purchased. I know through experience I cooked an i7 2600ks ability to run dual channel memory by pushing it too hard while overclocking. It would only post with 1 stick of ram in it. Swapped motherboards, used different dimms and everything.
I think you should be able to send it back for a refund if it was advertised as fully functioning and working. It clearly isn't if it can't run memory in dual channel.
Hi, Thanks for this video. It's been a while you post this video, but when you changed the 1366x768 screen by a 1600x900 one did you changed the cable too ? Best wishes
I would have used a custom/white list removal type bios BEFORE you updated but now I think as you have updated to the latest, lenovo has blocked downgrading, older and custom bios updates. I hope I'm wrong but that was the case with my T420 but I didn't have the ram issue with my i7. good bid dude
What specifications are the two sticks of RAM ? You keep saying DDR3 RAM but @ 8:36/14:41, the Crucial products are DDR3L (low voltage RAM 1.355v) which can run at either 1.35v or 1.5v. DDR3 RAM only run at 1.5v, if the laptop/i7 CPU only accept 1.5v RAM then it should be fine to combine DDR3 and DDR3L BUT if the laptop/i7 CPU only accepts 1.35v (DDR3L) then the conflict will cause the laptop not to Boot. Also if the laptop/i7 CPU accepts DDR3 1.5v RAM and the DDR3L stick has issue with conforming/switching to 1.5v then it will also not Boot. The final question is "How much do you trust that 'friend' not to have sold you a defective stick of RAM. Is your friendship worth more than 30 bucks ?
I had a very similar problem with a Dell Optiplex 9020 where I did a CPU swap and suddenly half my RAM wasn't working but not only half the RAM wasn't working but it was only operating in single channel mode. The board supports 4 sticks of RAM in dual channel mode. Anyway long story short what turned out to be the problem for me was either a slight bit of dust/lint that made it's want into the CPU socket during the CPU swap. Or the other thing it might have been simply was one or more of the pads on the bottom of the CPU was dirty due to me accidentally touching it or some other form of contamination. In any case upon blowing out the CPU socket and cleaning the bottom of the CPU itself I put it back in and magically everything worked as normal. It's probably long over due tips to try now but if you or anyone else is having a similar RAM issue following a CPU swap clean the bottom of the CPU and blow out the socket itself. Even if you can't see anything, something might still be there. I learned this lesson from first hand experience.
I work in a luxury high rise where people throw almost new PC's and I get them for free. So far I got a Lenovo ideapad 330S with a RYZEN 5 With the Radeon Graphics AMD GPU, Two iPads and coincidentally a Lenovo ThinkPad T430.
I just this past month bought a t430 off ebay that had already been upgraded a bit with a 9 cell battery & a 1600x900 display. Everything else is pretty much stock tho.
Probabbly it's too late, but problem with RAM, is, because CPU supports only SS not DS type of ram. If it has one stick, than it doesn't matter, but when you try to use both RAM, than they should be SS (single Side) memory
For the temperature you did just a cpu test and igpu isn't working, try aida64 stress test with GPU enable, and see how you'll pass 100°C with that laptop, if you're at 90°C cpu usage only.
What i have found with the T430's RAM slots is that with me it only accepts two of the same brand and frequency, if your still using this AA try two identical sticks :) hope that helped.
2:55 9-cell battery :: This is my experience, and your mileage may vary, but I found out that I *had* to buy a genuine Lenovo battery. My T430 Lenovo has a "smart battery" system in which on bootup (I assume) the motherboard interrogates the battery, which has a processor in it, with the result that the BIOS throws an error if the battery isn't a genuine Lenovo. Maybe this didn't apply to all T430's ever produced, but it does for mine. And a word of warning -- watch out for the wording of adverts for replacement batteries. The favourite thing on eBay is for cheap Chinese clones to advertise as "Lenovo genuine battery", as opposed to "genuine Lenovo battery". Check the pics and make sure the labels are the same. I got a refund, eventually, but it took a lot of time and effort.
Can you please make a guide on getting the most optimal power management on your thinkpad ? This is the only reason i'm still using windows on my laptop at the moment...
Well, of course, but using something like this: www.aliexpress.com/item/DC-12V-40cm-USB-3-0-MINI-PCI-E-to-PCI-E-16X-4PIN-Mother-Board/32790203702.html?aff_platform=aaf&cpt=1488677704878&sk=eub6yrrBy&aff_trace_key=7c612b4be581459993f5b655e1abb0ee-1488677704878-06663-eub6yrrBy is pretty cheap and works for lower end cards, and you can always get the other variants that have the bus powered by molex or 6-pin PCIe power to handle higher end cards. Despite the bottlenecking, I would say that it's worth it if you need a performance boost.
The top RAM slot still does not work not matter what configuration I try.
it could be a flaky memory controller in the cpu
have you updated the bios yet?
Nope.
AA Computers and Technology can't hurt to try
Just a theory...
I recall reading somewhere, Thinkpads having stability issues when using Quad core-i7 cpus, it had something to do with the motherboard not being able to provide enough juice to the processor, and maybe that could affecting your Dimm slot as well :P
I'm going to use this as a disassembly guide for the T430 because he told me to
It's nice to see relatively modern laptops still having sockets so you can replace their CPU
is there any processor socket to be considered in laptop before we changing the processor? or before buy a new one?
T430 Produccion Año 2012 Y AUN ES MAS RAPIDA QUE MODELOS 2021
@Polaris Lakewell yeah, it really sucks, I recently bought a t440p specifically because it had a socket, I don't plan on getting anything newer then that with exception to a framework laptop down the road once the t440p is either too slow or dies
@@ajddavid452 What processor was installed and what is the maximum supported in T440p?
@@alexf1515 an i5-4300m, but the t440p had multiple different factory options, any cpu made for Socket G3(FCPGA-946) should work, the highest end cpu is the i7-4940mx, but I don't recommend it for the t440p because it is has a 57w tdp and you'd need either a 135w or 170w ac adapter just to charge it, the best cpu to go with would be either the i7-4702mq or i7-4712mq, they both are 37w and are 4 core 8 thread, only downside is that for some dumb reason ebay sellers think they should be more expensive then the 47w equivalents the 4700mq or 4710mq, even thought the 4700mq and 4710mq are clocked higher, so best thing to do would be to wait for a great deal on either the 4702mq or 4712mq if you don't want to wait get the 47w cpus and undervolt them using throttlestop, there's also the 4800mq, 4810mq, 4900mq, and 4910mq which are all 47w don't go with the 57w cpus the t440p weren't designed for them
The rough coating on the non-backlit keyboard is actually an antimicrobial coating.
Yeah I was going to post that the rough non backlight is the safer option when it comes to germs as it has the antimicrobial coating on it compared to the backlight one where the coating is not there hence the difference in texture between the 2.
Really? Well now I know! Thanks!
So the next question is, can the key caps be swapped over? Are the keys translucent through the marking, or is it just a backlight, in which case they might swap.
I don't think so
I have a T430S which came with backlit keys. They are translucent through the markings but are not removable/swappable.
first time here. enjoying your 100mph talking speed, somehow i can follow it even while multitasking. that deserves a subscribe in my book.
2nd comment: i dont see you using any jumpcuts, so you're talking 100mph in a straight shot.. thats amazing. not to mention easier on the editor.
weird flex but ok (and true somehow lol)
I do love old laptops as they can actually be almost totally upgraded (especially the cpu as most modern laptops have soldered cpus)
Correction: most modern laptops have soldered EVERYTHING
soldered-on CPUs and RAM is a terrible trend that i wish would finally go away... but easy repairability is simply not "planned obsolescence" enough for them..... -_-
Actually the roughtness on the keys is the antimicrobial coating, which does not allow light to shine through.
I knew it, I was just leaving a comment about how it's probably just a compatibility issues linked to the 2 different brands of ram cards
@@Anjanya1948 He mentions in the video that this laptop supports 16 gb ram, and the new cpu supports 32, so its not that
I just got this model yesterday . It’s so cool in 2017 love
I just ordered mine yesterday t430 and 2020 I love it lol
The OCD in me wants to take a microfiber cloth and some alcohol/water spray to that thing.
I thought the same thing.
2-1/2 years after this video was posted I bought a Thinkpad W520 with near identical
specs to your post-upgrade T430. Cost was about $150, including shipping.
I've purchased my t430 1 month ago and I plan to make the same updates as you
ty for the video
ive replaced the screen on these thinkpads before. it is actually easier to replace the panel, not the whole lid
Most of these upgrades were marginal and not really worth it too. 5% better score in synthetics and an HD to HD+ panel instead of FHD, just don't make sense to me.
See: www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Replacing_T430_screen_with_a_better_one
i happen to own a thinkpad t530, and my dad dropped it, so i took the
opportunity to upgrade it to a FHD panel. the procedure for replacing
the screen on the t530 is the same as on the t430. I also posted the original comment as a tip to people who are considering doing similar upgrades on their thinkpads
Hey I have an ThinkPad e530 :D
Thanks, because that's what I'd like to do but was wondering if that would work.
16GB RAM works without problems? At what frequency?
I was issued a T430 for work. It is a pretty serviceable machine. I might buy one to be my personal rig.
this comment aged like milk!
@@SKDYCATwhy?
Thanks for the video! I actually didnt know you could do these upgrades to a laptop and now I really want to give it a try
watching this on my Lenovo ThinkPad T430
watching it on ThinkPad P51
was watching the first part on my T530, now on my phone
Very helpful video! Just got a T430 myself and stuck a 250gb 850 EVO in it as well as doubling the ram from 4GB to 8GB. I have ordered the 9 cell battery and am considering the add on "Slice" battery, however they are quite expensive here at around £70.
these thinkpad laptops were made to last forever :D
i have X230
I use to have the T60, now I have the T430!
Note: to the naysayers: I have already moved to 500gb SSD and am maxed at 16GB of
RAM (G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 Model F3-1600C9D-16GRSL).
Random Tech this is good to know. Thanks for sharing. I will consider this if I decide to invest further in the T430
Or maybe an SSD.
you could add an ssd using the msata slot next to the ram
Its what I am thinking of doing with my T420 and keeping the 500gb hdd for storage while I toss in either a 128gb msata ssd or a 256gb one into the slot.
AKA something like this would work perfectly for the msata slot in my t420
www.amazon.com/dp/B00ELQZCKW/
Wait what? I'd assume that this would be a joke on anything else, but this is an IBM style Thinkpad
Im watching this video on my t430 that came in the mail today, the speakers are amazing (actully came with better screen)
I know I seen some other forums about the ram issue working not working. hopefully you can get down to the bottom of it. thanks for sharing
Cheers from Spain
it's actually Matte

Hi, I have t430 updated with i7, 16gbs ram, 1080 screen on the way with adapter and SSD. I just need to unlock the bios now. Anyway cool video and thanks for sharing.
The 2 sticks of RAM must have the same clock frequency, exactly the same. Great video💨🌻
Great vid. I'd love to see one about the T420! (maybe including coreboot and an i7-3740QM if possible)
So I got a T530i a few days ago. Going to put in the W530 motherboard, FHD display, 32GB RAM, 9-cell battery and i7-3940XM. Wish me luck!
Ive had mine for 7 years, since 2011, and it’s still banging it’s super fast
Gonna update you there pal.... ever since the Win10... Its now so slow.
@Real_OSHA_Unsafety_Engineer if you dont want it slow, dont use windows and use linux. If you dont want linux, deal with it ig
Hello. Now 16GB RAM works without problems at T430? At what frequency?
Thinkpads, aka the king of connectivity
Man, this video makes me want to buy that laptop instead of latest one. I hope i see one as cheap as that
When doing an upgrade of memory or CPU I always remove the bios battery for at least 24 hours prior to installing the upgrade, when it's finished I put the battery back in, works all the time.
im thinking that its the bios thats maby not upgraded for that processer to use duel channel
Also look up 1920x1080 T430 screen mod sometime when you get a chance! great video as always
i like how your office is setup then
watching you on my lenovo, great video
this video is very educational thank you... keep up the great work.
thank you, I have a 430s I bought and just ordered the keyboard, already have the 4 core with 8 cache (and 16gbs of ram. thanks for the links. I'm looking over my screen now to look at upgrading. thank you
which 4 core did you use, whats the best or highest that the t430 will take
Looks like a all around good laptop :D
the slice battery gives you some pretty good ergonomics actually.
Solution: Upgrade BIOS to at least 2.68 for T430, then add 2 x 8GBDDR3 so-dimms and must be at minimal speed of 10800.
Flashing the BiOS is a risk and if done incorrectly, it can brick your laptop. Do that if there’s no alternative to upgrading the firmware to get the Thinkpad up and running.
I just bought a T430 as my first Thinkpad and I have a feeling that it won't be my last one lol.
I still own a T60p and it’s a monster..
You've inspired me to get myself one of these. One of the questions I have though is this: How well does this laptop hold up in 2017?
Hi from 2020, poeple are still buying that thing
@@loic7867 hello from 2022, I have this laptop
Hello from 2023, I bought mine 5 years ago and installed 500Gb SSD, i7 cpu, 16Gb RAM and backlit UK keyboard. It's my main machine using it daily for 8-10 hours. I've just taken it apart for good clean and 1Tb SSD and Win11 upgrade. Ready for another 5 years work😊
I have a T430s now guys :)
Thank you
This thing is just like my latitude e6410. 1440x900 screen, i7-620m, 9 cell battery. This was a great era of laptops.
I just picked up a t410 i5 8gb and 250gb ssd. I got it for free. In great shape and I got a dock and 2 charging cables.
Perhaps the companies could have a personal tech assistant for stuff like the ram slot failure.
Nice idea !
Used this as a disassembly guide broke steel hammer in 4 ways
I’d take it to a computer shop and let the techs test various RAM configurations. One of the channels looks like its blown and the other works. So you may need a repair.
The Socket G2 motherboards are really picky about having exactly matched Ram modules. I had the same problem. I put in two exactly matched Kingston modules and,,,, WOOHOO! The not-so-matched sticks went to a good cause on another machine.
I really wish they made the newer models with the old keyboard type, it was sooo much better.
There is something exciting about the fact that you could potentially just bonk the whole thing.
t430 is smaller :)
in regards to graphics you can get a EXP GDC v8.0 or 9.0 to enhance the graphics of the machine with a external GPU. get the dell power supply with it instead of a chunky Desktop PSU. i have one and it allows me to fully utilize my l420 Processor of course i upgraded my laptops 65 watt power adapter to a lenovo 90watt and it runs like a beast.
DID YOU FORGET TO ADD THERMAL PASTE?!?!?

OK my humble suggestions:
1 - Update the BIOS
2 - Ensure the RA are both the same "speed"...(1333 ; 12800, 1666 etc.)
3 - Try booting with no ram in it at all.
Well it's definitely not going to boot with no RAM...
Yeah, I was actually thinking about doing that. That might be a future project.
as for the memory issue if you swap the cpu back in and both slots work again it means that there is an issue with the memory controller in the 3612qm you purchased. I know through experience I cooked an i7 2600ks ability to run dual channel memory by pushing it too hard while overclocking. It would only post with 1 stick of ram in it. Swapped motherboards, used different dimms and everything.
Hey yo, could you make a cheap gaming laptop or small form factor PC build? that would be cool. love your vids by the way.
I swapped the I5 back in and both slots worked. The CPU is definitely causing some sort of issue.
I think you should be able to send it back for a refund if it was advertised as fully functioning and working. It clearly isn't if it can't run memory in dual channel.
Is it just me or do I hear the sound of a macro lens autofocusing whenever you focus the camera?
I Love my T530
Hi,
Thanks for this video.
I am editing with core i3 5005U and only 4 gb of ram, and it works great for me, nothing is slowing down
What specifications are the two sticks of RAM ?
I have one with dedicated GPU,love the machine
COMPAQ PRESARIO C700 SQUAD!!!!!
Any t340 with Nvidia cards
I learned this lesson from first hand experience.
ok im gonna try and upgrade to the i7 next
I don't know how you're so lucky with the prices.
i gots that t420 :D best pc
I work in a luxury high rise where people throw almost new PC's and I get them for free. So far I got a Lenovo ideapad 330S with a RYZEN 5 With the Radeon Graphics AMD GPU, Two iPads and coincidentally a Lenovo ThinkPad T430.
You have figured it out by now surely, but your RAM Issue is CPU related, if you'd get the i7 that lenovo offered for this machine you'll be golden.
I love your videos they’re really a great do you have any upgrade videos of the T420
i used this video as a disassembly guide and my laptop is on fire what do i do now?
you should immediately send an email to the fire department to call for help.
I just this past month bought a t430 off ebay that had already been upgraded a bit with a 9 cell battery & a 1600x900 display. Everything else is pretty much stock tho.
Like how computers work !
Probabbly it's too late, but problem with RAM, is, because CPU supports only SS not DS type of ram. If it has one stick, than it doesn't matter, but when you try to use both RAM, than they should be SS (single Side) memory
This is a very strange statement, since I have two double-sided modules on the T430
This got to have been a Hard Upgrade bro
I have had T430 for 4 years now and only 2 days ago I got to know mine had a dedicated Nvidia GPU 1gb
This is the only reason i'm still using windows on my laptop at the moment...
ever tried an egpu
Not yet ;)
Oooh, sounds foretelling.
Joe Manfred would it be a good idea to use an expresscard for an external gpu?
I would go through miniPCIe because it CAN have higher speeds, and it is actually cheaper to do, imo.
That non dual channel ram mode is making the benchmark scores suffer dude!
