    I luv this video, it helped me to understand what calories are. I am in no way counting calories. I don’t want to loose weight either. I just want to make sure I am eating right! Long story short, I am gluten free & have been eating a lot of gf breads. The carbs in most are pretty high I think; like 28 + grams per serving (1 slice). Do I burn carbs when I burn calories? Don’t want to store the carbs & become diabetic. Thanks in advance!

    • @ExplainIttoMe_1
      @ExplainIttoMe_1  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the support! This is by no means nutrition advice, but from my understanding our bodies will burn whatever we’re eating for energy. For example, if you eat a slice of bread, then go for a walk your body will probably use the carbohydrates from that bread for energy. If our bodies need more energy than what is currently available, we go to our reserves. First, our bodies will use stored glycogen for energy, which is essentially stored carbohydrates. Once we use that, we then go to our body fat reserves. In very extreme cases of hunger, your body will start to digest protein (e.g., vital organs and muscle tissue). Mind you, this is a fairly simple explanation. In reality, it’s more complicated that that. For example, in sure hormonal levels and other factors affect how our bodies burn calories. Hope that helped, I’m glad you enjoyed the video :)

    A measure of calories is specific to a given reaction. Food calorimetry is based on an incineration reaction. This is not the reaction that takes place in the human body. The calorie also does not account for the hormonal effect of food which determines what the body does with the breakdown products of food. The calorie is only useful to measure the volume of some particular food.

    very nice video...it gives basic understanding on Calories.
    I have a question...If I consume more calories than required by my body (BMR+Digestion+PA), will 100% of that extra Calories be converted into fat???

    • @ExplainIttoMe_1
      @ExplainIttoMe_1  6 лет назад

      Hi, thanks for the nice comment. That’s a very interesting question and it really depends on the type of food that you’re eating. If those excess Calories come from dietary fat, then yes, most of those excess Calories will be stored directly as body fat. This is because the human body does not need to do a lot of work to convert dietary fat into triglycerides, which ultimately make their way into adipose tissue or fat cells. If those excess Calories come from carbohydrates, then your body will try to replenish its glycogen levels first (see my video on carbohydrates for more). A 70 kg person will have roughly 500 g of stored glycogen. If your glycogen levels are full, then your body will convert those excess carbohydrates into body fat via a process called de novo lipogenesis. This is not an efficient process, meaning our body uses a lot of energy to do this. So, not all 100% of those Calories would be stored as body fat since energy is needed to convert the carbohydrates into body fat first. Finally, if those extra Calories came from protein, your body could possibly use some of that protein to build body tissues such as muscle, hair, skin, and nails for example. But, if your body doesn’t need to build anything, then it will convert that protein into glucose (i.e., carbohydrates) via a process called gluconeogenesis. If your body has no use or those particular extra carbohydrates, then it will get converted to body fat via de novo lipogenesis as mentioned above. These processes require energy as well, so not all of those extra Calories will get stored as body fat.
      So, in summary, when you eat excess Calories, your body will first store the excess dietary fat as body fat and try to use the carbohydrates and protein. If it has no need for them, eventually they can become body fat as well. It does take energy to convert protein and carbohydrates into body fat, so not all of that energy gets converted to body fat. But, extra dietary fat gets converted into body fat quite easily.
      I hope that was helpful!

    So if we dont do any activity and eat 1 meal that consists of 2000 calories you cant afford to eat more after that right if you want to lose weight??

    • @ExplainIttoMe_1
      @ExplainIttoMe_1  4 года назад

      It really depends on how many calories your body needs in order to sustain its weight. The formula I explained in the video gives a rough idea, but in reality it is more complicated. The reason being there are many factors that can affect body weight.

    1 pound of body mass = 3.5 Calories ? or
    1 pound = 3500 Calories ?

    • @ExplainIttoMe_1
      @ExplainIttoMe_1  7 лет назад

      1 pound of body fat is approximately 3500 Calories (with the capital C).

    • @rohitbains01
      @rohitbains01 7 лет назад

      Explain It to Me my body weight is 174.15 pounds , so 174.15 X 3500 = 609,525 Calories daily i need to maintain it , but is very large amount , most people follow 2000 Calories diet , 609525 is relatively very high

    • @ExplainIttoMe_1
      @ExplainIttoMe_1  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, in order to maintain your body weight, we can estimate it using the TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) calculator. This take into account your basal metabolic rate, thermic effect of food, and any additional energy requirements from physical activity. For example, if your body needs 2500 Calories daily to maintain your weight, if you eat an extra 500 Calories per day, that adds up to an extra 3500 Calories for the week, meaning you’ll gain a pound at the end of the week. On the other hand, if you’re only eating 2000 Calories per day but need 2500 Calories, your body will utilize some of its stored energy, and thus, you’ll lose weight by the end of the week. Please keep in mind that this is a simplistic view. In reality, it’s more complicated than that as there are several factors that can affect the body’s ability to utilize Calories.

      it depends on the type of calorie if its a large calorie then its 3.5 and large calories start with a big letter and small calorie is 3500 and small calorie starts with a small letter
