I've been loving universal control. I keep my iPad Pro right in front of me at my desk with my monitor above it so it's great to just slide down from the monitor to the iPad (which is something I used to do manually with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse), and when I'm drawing in a photoshop cloud document that's open in both my ipad and mac, I can just slide the mouse down and use it to control tools which speeds things up since I can always have the apple pencil to draw no matter what. One feature I'd like to see is the option to have a kind of safe mode enabled where you can't move the mouse over to another screen unless you hold down the Fn key or something if there are times when you want it enabled but don't want to have mouse/keyboard transfer as easily.

That’s exactly what I have just done. I do have macs but actually prefer my iPad for focusing on the job in hand! Maxed out iPad Pro and mid tier iMac for the win 😀

I am thinking my iPad Pro can act as an extra screen as well - I love extra spaces
I thought of needing just iPad Air before I don't need super smooth graphics, I don't do graphic design work, I don't game - but thinking of it as an extra monitor to my iMac - is it worth getting the iPad Pro?

I’ve used sidecar quite a bit and enjoy it. It is very fluid and responsive. I will have to check out Universal Control. thanks for the awesome information.
Christopher, a great video thanks I couldn't get it to work then realised I didn't have iOS 12.3. A great feature.
It’s cool when it works. Sometimes it just randomly disconnects. Other times when I click on the iPad and go back to my main screen, it acts as if I have the shift button pressed, it took me a while to figure out what was going on and how to fix it (just move cursor to iPad and bring back to main screen without clicking anything on the iPad). My current setup is MacBook Pro Max, MacBook Pro M1 and iPad Pro.

Thanks - I’d updated my Mac but forgotten about it - and like the look of this a lot. Just updating my ipad now. I have a very limited space so sitting with my mac on my lap and still being able to have stuff running on my iPad but not having to lean across to deal with it - or vice versa just is going to be very helpful for this armchair user.
Also…. Old but super underrated feature: All your devices use a Universal Clipboard. Been using that forever.

Actually maybe missed this. Can you use the touchscreen on iPad while on universal mode?
The “shelf” you describe is akin to the Scrapbook on early Macs. I use the Notes app to provide a similar function across devices now but would love to see a dedicated “shelf” or “Scrapbook” that exists across all your Apple devices to serve as an easy repository for all the things (images, documents, files, links, etc.) I might want to move from one device to another.
I hope the dragging content thing expands in functionality. My group at school shares a onenote for class notes and resources and stuff and I use goodnotes or a different onenote notebook for my personal notes. I’m not currently able to drag a picture from onenote on my computer to onenote/goodnotes on my iPad. Copy/paste across devices still works so it’s not a huge thing, but sometimes that can be slow to load so it would be nice to just drag and drop
Hey Christopher, I would like to thank you for leading the quality content on apple device management and use cases. Could you also comment on having iPad as a notebook/whiteboard while in a call with such features like Universal Control and Sidecar. Professional (white collar/consultant) usage of mac and iPad has different functions which I would like to have your opinion on. Thanks!
I found that with leaving Sidecar on I experienced lag in video calls where the sound goes out of sync (zoom and Microsoft teams). However, I haven’t had anything like that with universal control (although the connection does drop randomly which is a separate issue as not exclusive to calls). MacBook Air M1 2020 + iPad Pro M1 2020 + iPad Mini 2021 works fine with calls linked with Universal Control.

Universal control is amazing. Just wish OBS saw the iPad when recording in this mode. It’ll only see it when the iPad is connected with sidecar. Also cool but I’d really love to be able to use my iPad apps while recording with OBS. Unless I just haven’t figured it out yet.
Looks great! It’s a shame that I can’t stroll with my MX Master 3 mouse on the iPad though.
amazing function for laptop users working on the go. I just can't justify getting an ipad yet as I have 3x monitors (including the macbook), and i almost always prefer laptops over tablets. Super cool though... maybe i'll get a cheap ipad one day just so i can use this when working away from the office.

i got the iPad pro 11’ recently, and i can’t seem to put down my 8 year old MacBook pro…im using it now… i am pretty sure i am an iPad person. well i bought the IPP for Procreate.

Magic Trackpad 2 paired to the iPad does not allow for gestures on the Mac. Logitech mouse paired to the Mac does not allow scrolling on the iPad.
How do I wake up my mini using universal control, when it was working with my Mac when they were awake?

wherever the cursor is, the device we are controlling. the most frustrating thing in Windows. I move the cursor from monitor to system, and when typing it types on the monitor. I have to click it again.

Shift key and Scroll doesn't work in Universal control from mac to iPad
I hit that bug too. It’s a showstopper for me, which is a bummer. I’m trying to figure out if it’s only with Logitech gear and if using the Mac in clamshell mode vs open makes a difference.
I see Chris is using a Kechron Keyboard. How do I get my K2's shift button to work? It's not capitalizing text on my iPad.

Somehow I can't make it to work. Under add display, I don't see my iPad. I am on MBP M1 and iPad Pro 2018. I tried all available solutions out there to fix it and nothing worked. What I am doing wrong?

Hi there, is there anyway to use the Ipad Trackpad on MacOS and keep the Tap to Click / Two-Finger Secondary Click and Natural Scrolling setting?
It seems MacOS is only recognising click to click, ctrl + click for secondary click and the scrolling is very slow if using the ipad trackpad on Mac.
Will the clipboard work across devices? Say you copy text in IPad . Can you paste in Mac? What about wired keyboards ,dominant will be the Mac I guess.
Clipboard sharing has already been a thing for years. It a part of handoff. I should have included that. And wired keyboards work great, that’s what I’m using.

Can anyone help me, please. When I want to add another display, the only option I have when adding a display is: Mirror or extend to. So then, I don't have the option to use iPad OS, but can only use my iPad as an extended monitor. Thanks to anyone for helping out!
Universal Control does not work with a MBP 14" in clamshell (closed) mode plugged into an external monitor. I've tried everything. I've checked everything. All devices up-to-date, brand new MBP with M1 Pro, 2018 iPad Pro 11"... PLEASE HELP. WHY WON'T IT WORK.

This is EXTREMELY unreliable for me, I have to do multiple reboots of the laptop and iPad, I have to turn "Cursor and Keyboard" off on the iPad, then power it off, then power it back on, turn it back on, only then it.. sometimes appears. But then you put the iPad to sleep, next day, it's not working anymore. It's also not working on our office wifi. Does this work reliably for you, or are you also getting these glitches?

I've been trying to use the universal control but the "Link keyboard and mouse" option doesn't appear at all even though I've used it before. Only the "Mirror or extend to" option seems to be available currently. I've tried everything but it still does not show. Is there anything I can do about it?

Probably not, it was a ton of work for me and it cut into the time I set aside to make videos. I reprioritized and I’m 100% focused on videos now.

Hi Christopher! I love your videos and they help out a ton. I wanted to get your input on your combination of the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. I’m looking at upgrading my old 2012 MacBook Pro and been debating between the MacBook Pro vs. The new Mac studio. Cost aside, I’m torn between the two. The iPad Pro is a really great travel option, but it has it’s (very limited) limitations. I’m not sure I need another travel option (I.e. the MacBook Pro). Anyway, would love to hear your insight between the two working with an iPad pro
Hi Chris thank you for the video! I wonder have you or anyone tried it with ipad 11" 1st generation? i'm using m1 mac air the experience is so laggy for me both using the mac trackpad and keyboard and external keyboard and mouse, it's very laggy for me.
I have a Logitech MX3 mouse paired with the mac. But the scrolling does not work when I moved the cursor to iPad. Anyone having the same issue? Or know how to fix it?

The use case seems far-fetched, I don’t see a reason to want to put work notes/files and so on on you ipad intentionally and not on your macbook/mac. Running my ipad battery just to have a calendar or such open seems wasteful unless you need to make 100 new entries in your cal, 🤨. Sidecar is a real extra monitor, makes far more sense although it’s tiny.
So iPad controlling Mac worked great - Mac controlling the iPad - not so much - cannot get Mac to click on iPad or plant a cursor on iPad... :(
It worked for me without having to add the iPad on the display settings, just turning it on and pushing the cursor to the edge
