  • Aquarium, goldfish, need a tank size that’s adequate for them to live an enriched life. There’s a lot of misconceptions as far as figuring out the perfect aquarium size for keeping goldfish. When in reality, there’s no perfect answer when it comes to keeping pets in a cage. As a general rule of thumb goldfish should be kept in a 30 gallon aquarium and larger. That being said, there are multiple different types of goldfish that grow a lot larger than others and that’s a big variable.
There are two types of goldfish in the aquarium hobby. There are fantail, goldfish, and single tail goldfish. Single tail goldfish are going to grow a lot larger than fantail goldfish. This means that this type of goldfish is going to need a lot larger of an aquarium. Single tail goldfish tank roll over 12 inches in length while fantail goldfish tend to stick around that 6 to 8 inch mark. This means that fantail, goldfish or a better option if you have a smaller aquarium.
a general rule of thumb for keeping goldfish is to have at least a 40 gallon aquarium for fantail goldfish. For single tail goldfish, you’re going to want as large of an aquarium as possible or even a pond. Single shell, goldfish control, over 12 inches long and they swim a lot. Not only do they sell a lot but they swim back-and-forth nonstop. This means you should probably be keeping fantail goldfish if you want to have a smaller aquarium. On average fish keepers, keep fantail, goldfish in 40 gallon aquariums to 200+ gallon aquariums.
So there’s no perfect answer on what tank size to get your goldfish. The general rule of thumb is to give your fish enough space to move around in the aquarium. Use your best judgment and do some research on water parameters. The biggest setback on aquarium size is actually how fast the water parameters go. Bad with your goldfish. The nitrate levels are going to be what you need to watch. When your nitrate levels get around 30 to 50 ppm that’s when you’re going to need to be doing a water change.

I keep one adult single tailed goldfish in a 350 litre tank. (his tank mate died recently from a power failure which caused a nitrate spike) I run a Fluval 406 external filter which is supposed to support up to 100gallons. I used to run two Fluval 406 filters for the tank when he had a tank mate. I will restart the other filter soon, to help support the tank. I feed him twice a day and perform a water change on average of 20 litres per day. This has to be maintained to keep the water perimeters in check and the nitrates around the 20-40ppm mark. About once or twice a week I do a 40 litre water change to bring the nitrates right down and closer to zero ppm. The goldfish is around 8 years old. It`s hard work and monotonous doing constant water changes. I could feed him less, but he doesn`t eat much considering how much it takes to maintain the tank levels. He would be easier to look after in a large outdoor pond. I wouldn`t recommend keeping a single tailed goldfish in a fish tank, because it takes A LOT of daily maintenance. I also currently clean his filter in tank water every three to four weeks to help keep the nitrates down.

Double tailed goldfish are fancy goldfish. Hope this helps you understand. Also, single tailed goldfish can get to 2 feet long depending on your tank size. If you keep one in like a 150 gallon pond they could grow huge

Thanks for this video! I purchased three "feeder" goldfish for my patio pond last Spring, 2022. Then the cold weather came and I really didn't want to leave them outside in freezing temps because they were so young. Well, I am a nano fish keeper of 5 and 10 gallon planted aquariums. I put them into a ten gallon, just for the winter. They enjoyed betta pellets and duck weed so much that they are now almost three inches long. Too big for the patio pond. And my future in ground pond won't break ground until 2024. I am cycling a 40 breeder with a variety of anubias, a mechanical filter and coarse sponge filter. I hope I can keep the water perameters as well as I did in the 10 gallon. This larger tank is all new ground for me. I am also trying pool filter sand instead of the gravel. Is pool filter sand ok for goldfish?

Exactly. What fish poop management systems are you committing to using? Do you want to do 50 percent water changes every week? Do you live in a dorm room? Are you doing a planted tank?

Funny, many "Pro RUclips" fish keepers make the same "goldfish" mistakes when keeping Cichlids....
Too small a tank, no use of plants (Hydroponics or sump setup can keep fish from destroying plants)
and Keeping WAY TOO MANY....Yeah I know, But they are less aggressive when you own 30 of them blah blah
but yet these same people bang on about how everyone else is doing it wrong.
You giving Goldfish advice is doing God's work, good stuff bro

Ironically the longest living goldfish was in a very small aquarium. The people in those groups are sick.

Smaller aquarium. 2 small powered filters.
1 air pump powered sponge filter.
    Some gravel.
    25 percent water change weekly
    Easy.

I have 2 carnival goldfish (single fin) from 2016. We should have put them in a 55 or 90 gal tank in the beginning. Instead we upgraded 3x. And we will be upgrading again. They are 1 ft each. They are poopy, but we have excellent filtration. Their personalities are like dogs. 😊

30 gallon is a good size and more importantly better for the keeper to clean it ok.
