Comets have ONLY long fins, hence their name 2. Comets are metallic 3. Comets originated in the United States in 1800s by crossbreed a longtail ryukin and a common goldfish by Hugo Mulert 4. Shubunkins originated in Japan in the later time, at the early 1900s by crossbreed the calico telescope and the comet. There are other kinds of shubunkins of which I'll explain you guys later. One bred by crossing the common and calico telescope as well. 4. They are nacreous, sometimes they can be a Sakura (nacreous/matted goldfish with red and white coloration, although there are some individuals with little black speckles 5. Their offspring is heterogeneous, meaning the genes of their colors are not exactly alike to the parents. American/Japanese shubunkin have a body resemblance to comets London shubunkins have a resemblance to commons. I read that they were bred during WWII in London. Bristol shubunkins have an unknown genetic history, it's uncertain of what goldfish bred, but I found that it's first look was bred in Great Britain in 1930s. Finally, their nickname is called poor man's koi because not only they are smaller than the Showa and the Sanke koi, they are very cheap.

@@sweetbutterfly5 Sorry for such a long comment! I see that you had a thought if they would be formed as metallic, matte, or nacreous you say. So, my info is partially outdated other than the history of shubunkins and the heterozygous trait in nacreous. Nacreous and nacreous fish certainly makes 50% Nacreous, 25% Metallic, 25% Matte. But crossing a Nacreous and Metallic equals to 50% Metallic, 50% Nacreous. This is because the nacreous trait that is responsible for bringing matte traits out is suppressed by metallic traits of the other fish, and that the metallic phenotype population increased, while the nacreous remains at a 50%. It varies on the bloodline but this is a general rule of thumb. The Goldfish Council has such a large information relating to the goldfish genetics, there's this article where it explains scale types and it will show you the part where the info on nacreous exists. www.thegoldfishcouncil.org/post/transparency-mutations-in-goldfish

What is the reason for goldfish pecking on another goldfish's slime coat. Its not attacking or biting and the other goldfish seems to stay quite still while the other seems to he kissing its side?
It's the usual with science, the answer is rarely simple and you are forced to dig a long time for the answer. Thank you for helping. Apparently here in Hawaii comets can eat cane toad tadpoles, or at least a certain number, without dying.. The cane toads are a major pest here so this is very important.
@@TobiasHolenstein Mostly the problem is that they are so prolific. They eggs in strings of 1500 per toad and overwhelm everything else in the pond. They have destroyed some of the native fauna in Australia becuase they look like prey but kill the predator.
Good deal bro you correct from my research I've come up with the same but like you said not all of hss the room for a 1000 gallon pond an I have two of these fish an a few long tail commet very beautiful fish in a pond
One thing you missed in koi vs shubunkin: koi are designed to be viewed from the top, shubunkins from the side, making koi better for ponds and shubunkins for large aquariums.
I just rescued a goldfish from a pond outside my work. We put chlorine the pond so it wasn't safe. I bought a 50 gallon tank for my fish. I named him Bobby! Now I know that Bobby is a common goldfish and despite the name common, Bobby is a beautiful fish!
I have a common gold fish that's 7yrs old and one that's 4yrs old currently looking to get a shubunkin and ryukin also a few loaches to mix it up in my 75gal aquarium. If anyone has any advice please let me know
Now that my fish are quite a bit bigger I've been feeding them koi pellets, the Blue Ridge Plainum Pro ones. My goldfish and koi seem to really like them
Hi love your video, hope maybe you can help me out ! I live in England ,have a 1200 litre pond . Planted with marginals, deep water and oxygenators. Have mixture of shurbunkins common and comet goldfish . My common goldfish keep dying , the water quality is spot on , filters pump cleaned in pond water, Plenty food no marks etc on fish ,no gulping for air etc . Any ideas?????
Hi! Sorry to hear that! Are you doing anything before they pass away or does it seem random? Also, I know you said your water quality is spot on but can you give me the exact parameters, thanks!
Thank you! Yeah there is a lot of algae, I'm hoping it'll take care of itself, if not I'll have to remove some. My fish seem to like hiding in it though
I won a comet goldfish at a fair six years ago. I put him in a thirty gallon tank with a filter for seventy gallons and does fine. I think ten years is not out of the question if you clean the tank well. It's been over five years so they can thrive in a tank longer for sure.
In here, we just literally call either Comet Goldfish or Shubunkin as Shubunkin or "Shobon" since they are similar in appearances but different in colors. Anyway, you're well informed about this, so thank you very much.
One way you can tell is if you fish has barbels (the little whisker things around it's mouth) If it does, it is a koi, if it does not have them, it is a goldfish
I can't say for certain, but in my experience with goldfish, the more hardy ones are the ones that are most similar to the "wild" goldfish. So I would imagine that the Japanese shubunkin would be more hardy than the London/bristol shubunkin because the London shubunkins appear to have a rounder body (kind of like a fancy goldfish)
Hi Elizabeth, thank you! I don't have personal experience with keeping fish in these temperatures, but from what I understand, goldfish can survive below freezing temps as long as the water quality is still good and they receive plenty of oxygen and of course the pond shouldn't completely freeze. I believe in zone 7 goldfish will most likely go into hibernation and during the months leading up to winter they should be well fed. If the goldfish themselves freeze, they will not survive. If a layer of ice forms you will probably need a pond heater or de-icer to keep an opening in the ice to allow gas exchange. Hope that helps!
Thank you man I get a good knowledge about gold fish after watching this video 😍♥️I am from sri Lanka 🇱🇰 I don't forget subscribe you Chanel 😍 again thank
i once had a goldfish with the calico coloring once, i thought it was a pretty awesome design. some of the designs went away over the years and it became a plain regular gold. i was wondering if the fish was just colored by people, the color was worn off by the water parameters, of if it had gone out on its own due to whichever. i wanted the colors to stay permanently.
it could have been that it maybe was a hybrid, maybe a common / shubunkin hybrid or something. In my experience, a lot of common goldfish will be born with different colors or patterns and as they get older they will turn a solid color
Kind of, I think their tails may be a bit longer even when they are young, but I think the fins and tails of comet goldfish are more distinct as they get older
We miss out Shubi!!! It's what we named our shubunkin goldfish! He grew from 2 inches to about 6 inches in our pond, he died I guess from the Pleco we had or some illness? We have no reason why, he was just gone! We miss him so much, but not sure if we want to try and get another one........................
Sorry about your shubunkin! I've never personally experienced this, but I have seen other people online say that plecos have been known to suck onto goldfish to try to suck their slime coat. Not sure if that's what happened to yours, but that's what it reminded me of
@@TobiasHolenstein thanks, possibly, one of the other comet Goldfish that lives peacefully with the Pleco current was bird injured (we moved the pond and everyone is safe from them now), and I do see a few marks on her but nothing devastating like Pleco eating away at her coat, and I try and give Pleco lots to eat too, it will always be a mystery but possible, again great video!
I have a white shubunkin with white dots on his heads, fins, tails, and other parts, what is that type called, i wish i could send you their pic, their name is quapy
@@TobiasHolenstein thank you !! They had a funny smell to their pond so I changed out half the water yesterday. They seem happy, I’ve had them for a few years and am good at keeping things clean for them. Is a funny smell another sign they’re spawning?
Love from India❤ 🇮🇳 Please make video on if we can keep comet and common goldfish with fancy goldfish if yes then please describe all other fancy goldfish suitable with comet and common goldfish. Thank you
In my opinion, I think it would be fine. A lot of people say not to keep fancy goldfish with long bodied goldfish because there will be unfair competition over food, because the long bodied goldfish will get the food quicker than the fancy goldfish. However, I have an oranda goldfish in my pond and it doesn't seem to have trouble getting food. Just make sure the black moor is getting food
Makes me mad one see them in a tiny tank. Sure if start them in minimum tank then get them in a bigger one or a pond later on. Some people don't realize they can live for just as long as a dog 😆. Wonder if just turn my pool into a pond.
I'm pretty sure that big one with a long flowing tail is a koi. it's easy to identify because of the barbels and a noticeable more downward angled mouth which goldfish do not have. Unles ofcourse if its a cross of a koi and a shibunkin goldfish(which people actually does and is possible).
Yeah the biggest one in my pond, which has the orange black and white coloring, is a butterfly koi. The smaller medium sized one with the calico coloring is a shubunkin
Here's the price at local petco: Common/comet (1-2 in): 20 cents Common/comet (1-2 in): 36 cents Shubunkin (1-3 in): $3 Koi (2-3 in): $4 Fantail (1-3 in): $4 Calico fantail (1-3 in): $5 Wakin (2-4 in): $7 Koi (3-4 in): $7 Koi (5 in+): $15-$25 Jumbo goldfish (4 in+): $40 Adoption: varies In general shubunkin is cheaper than koi, especially larger size and higher quality fish. And the main reason it's called poor man's koi is the cost of keeping koi is much higher than keeping shubunkin or any goldfish. A several thousand gallon pond could cost many times more to maintain than a 200 gallon pond considering food, water change, filtration, price of fish, cost of the pond itself, electric bill, time of care, etc.
Bristols and London shubnkins are the best. The Japanese now breed the Bristol Shubunkin in a whole range of very nice colours and colour patterns besides calico. Blue and white, blue, black, red and white etc. They have incredible tails often fringed in red or white etc. The japanese have preserved the perfect form of the Bristol whose tails dont collapse....they are however much smaller than the originals but this could be limited space.
The koi in the chain stores are always culls. Very low quality but that being said, i found a beautiful one there. But i usually see koi with kinks at those stores :(
@@TobiasHolenstein yeah the breeders get first picks for the EXPENSIVE perfect marked ones. Resellers are next in lines for pricey pets and then culls are sold to chain stores

You’re hilarious I loved watching this it was very informative with some humor ! I have a suggestion for research of a video... My favorite fancy goldfish is the Froghead/toadhead yet there’s little to no info out there on it. It’s a hybrid mix between an eggfish and a bubble eye. And one breeder I asked questions to said when he bred them, out of 1000 eggs he only got 8 pure Froghead. 😓 I bought one right before Christmas last year and it died only 3 days of getting him I was so upset! I told the breeder and no good answers to why he died because I’ve been keeping fancy goldfish for a long time now. I am not a newbie so I’m trying to find another Froghead. Anyways, long comment but wanted to share that and ask if you could do a video on frogheads 🐸🐡
Thank you haha I'm glad you liked it 😄I've never even heard of Froghead/toadhead goldfish before haha so yeah I agree that would be a good video idea! Maybe I will do one in the near future. I know a lot of the fancy varieties can be prone to health issues, it probably wan't your fault that it died. Thank you for watching! 🙂
I had a shubunkin goldfish when I was a kid. I won her from the fair, I thought she wasn't going to get that big but man she grew fast. Lol she was beautiful and I named her angel. She lived for 6 years (she died when her water was changed half hazardly) and I cried like a baby when she did die. It took years for me to get another fish after that. I then got a beta I named hydro who was stolen.. like who steals a beta fish?? He was stunning too so I guess thats why..

I tell them about you but I sure they would like to see for themselves! Take care and God bless! Animal Papa and Junior! 🐾
Very true! and wow I have never heard of the cane toad before, but I just google searched them and apparently they are the worlds largest toad!
Awesome A.J. sounds like you have a nice pond going!
What about those orange once? Are they subhukin?
One thing you missed in koi vs shubunkin: koi are designed to be viewed from the top, shubunkins from the side, making koi better for ponds and shubunkins for large aquariums.
That's such bullshit lol..
Nice video man! Have you ever seen the long tail comments that have the extremely long tails?
Thank you! I have! I love those ones 😄
I just rescued a goldfish from a pond outside my work. We put chlorine the pond so it wasn't safe. I bought a 50 gallon tank for my fish. I named him Bobby! Now I know that Bobby is a common goldfish and despite the name common, Bobby is a beautiful fish!
Thanks
I have a common gold fish that's 7yrs old and one that's 4yrs old currently looking to get a shubunkin and ryukin also a few loaches to mix it up in my 75gal aquarium. If anyone has any advice please let me know
this is an amazing video
Thank you! :)
how big does the shubunkin get?
I just found out now that my goldie is a shubunkin, thanks for the info. You are so funny and i like you
🤩
Awesome! and thank you! 🙌
Best food for goldfish and carps, for good color and growth??
Now that my fish are quite a bit bigger I've been feeding them koi pellets, the Blue Ridge Plainum Pro ones. My goldfish and koi seem to really like them
Pls make video on gender identify of shuarkin gold fish
Hi love your video, hope maybe you can help me out !
I live in England ,have a 1200 litre pond .
Planted with marginals, deep water and oxygenators.
Have mixture of shurbunkins common and comet goldfish .
My common goldfish keep dying , the water quality is spot on , filters pump cleaned in pond water,
Plenty food no marks etc on fish ,no gulping for air etc .
Any ideas?????
Hi! Sorry to hear that! Are you doing anything before they pass away or does it seem random? Also, I know you said your water quality is spot on but can you give me the exact parameters, thanks!
Hey Tobias, I love your pond and fish, but there is so much algae! Love your videos😁
Thank you! Yeah there is a lot of algae, I'm hoping it'll take care of itself, if not I'll have to remove some. My fish seem to like hiding in it though
Algae is great for the fish to eat and hide in, and for microbeasts to live in..which gives the fish live natural food....stop sanitizing nature! 🙄
I won a comet goldfish at a fair six years ago. I put him in a thirty gallon tank with a filter for seventy gallons and does fine. I think ten years is not out of the question if you clean the tank well. It's been over five years so they can thrive in a tank longer for sure.
Yeah it sounds like you have a good setup for yours so it will probably do well
In here, we just literally call either Comet Goldfish or Shubunkin as Shubunkin or "Shobon" since they are similar in appearances but different in colors.
Anyway, you're well informed about this, so thank you very much.
Interesting! Thank you for the info 🙂
and you're welcome! I'm glad you liked the video!
shubunkin vs mixed color koi carp..
i am confused which fish do i have
One way you can tell is if you fish has barbels (the little whisker things around it's mouth) If it does, it is a koi, if it does not have them, it is a goldfish
I have 3 shubunkins 2 fantails 1 red cap in 15 gallon, they all fit perfectly right now in my tank but i will upgrade soon
Can you please do a video about the birds and the bees?
Haha great idea!
Some people can confuse between sarasa comet (single tailed type) and red cap oranda (double tailed type)
That's true!
I have two Bristol shununkin I thought they were fantail, thank you
Nice! Bristols are so cool!
Are london shubunkins more hardy then japenese shubunkins, because i heard common are more hardy then comets
Tobias , will Shubunkin goldfish survive outdoors in a 9’x11’ that’s 3 feet deep over winter in zone 7? Great video! ❤️
Tobias Holenstein , thanks so much!
Lmao “sifted through a barrage of false and misleading information info” - Ty for the laughs today 🤙
How long do Shubunkin live
Thanks for info.
No problem :)
thank you for info
You're welcome! 🙂
Thank you man I get a good knowledge about gold fish after watching this video 😍♥️I am from sri Lanka 🇱🇰 I don't forget subscribe you Chanel 😍 again thank
To this say I will never forget my kindergarten teacher asking me "What's a shubunkin?" After I told her I had one.
Have a few calico comets. Wonder what color they will turn if they lose the calico lol
Yeah! Are they still pretty small?
I have comet and common goldfish which are just around 15 years old in a pond.. and they are still going strong..
i once had a goldfish with the calico coloring once, i thought it was a pretty awesome design. some of the designs went away over the years and it became a plain regular gold. i was wondering if the fish was just colored by people, the color was worn off by the water parameters, of if it had gone out on its own due to whichever. i wanted the colors to stay permanently.
it could have been that it maybe was a hybrid, maybe a common / shubunkin hybrid or something. In my experience, a lot of common goldfish will be born with different colors or patterns and as they get older they will turn a solid color
@@TobiasHolenstein oh,ok. Could possibly be. Thank you for the reply.
Do comet and common goldfish when they young look the same?
Kind of, I think their tails may be a bit longer even when they are young, but I think the fins and tails of comet goldfish are more distinct as they get older
Godsh I’m still why do I love your vids so much 🥺x
Thank you 🙂
We miss out Shubi!!!
I'm not sure if it has a different name. It may just be that your shubunkin has more white in its pattern
@@TobiasHolenstein when he/she yawns its so cute with that tiny mout
How Manny,i can put in a 75 gls?
I would say you could probably do like 5 pretty comfortably
@@TobiasHolenstein i just got 8 babies!! You think that's to much?
@@kusuko..scla..213 When they are small it's totally fine, but I guess you'll just have to see when they are bigger in a few years
Thanks for this vid.
You're welcome man!
How do I know if my shibunkins and koi are spawning?
If you see them chasing each other around the pond, that is usually a sign that they are spawning
@@TobiasHolenstein thank you !! They had a funny smell to their pond so I changed out half the water yesterday. They seem happy, I’ve had them for a few years and am good at keeping things clean for them. Is a funny smell another sign they’re spawning?
Love from India❤ 🇮🇳
Please make video on if we can keep comet and common goldfish with fancy goldfish if yes then please describe all other fancy goldfish suitable with comet and common goldfish. Thank you
Could I keep a shubunkin in a big tank with a black moore ??
I have heard of some people turning their pools into ponds haha
I have 3 shubunkin and 2 fancy in 15 gal but dont worry i will upgrade soon
I'm pretty sure that big one with a long flowing tail is a koi. it's easy to identify because of the barbels and a noticeable more downward angled mouth which goldfish do not have. Unles ofcourse if its a cross of a koi and a shibunkin goldfish(which people actually does and is possible).
Yeah the biggest one in my pond, which has the orange black and white coloring, is a butterfly koi. The smaller medium sized one with the calico coloring is a shubunkin
Can you breed a comet goldfish with a shubunkin goldfish ?
Hi
Will my 2 shubumkins out swim my 2 goldfish for food in their pond
Great video very informative
Hi Lorraine, I would only worry about that if your goldfish are fancy goldfish. If not I think they should be fine
I love the shabunkin ❤️
Me too!
I’ve just cycled my pond and got 3 shabunkin and 3 comets I can’t wait till they grow. The are both about 2-3 inches at the minute
@@vikkitee4686 Awesome! Yeah in a few years they will be pretty big!
This crap funny and Interesting
Thank you! Haha

Koi (2-3 in): $4
Fantail (1-3 in): $4
Calico fantail (1-3 in): $5
Wakin (2-4 in): $7
Koi (3-4 in): $7
Koi (5 in+): $15-$25
Jumbo goldfish (4 in+): $40
Adoption: varies
In general shubunkin is cheaper than koi, especially larger size and higher quality fish.
I see what you're saying, I still don't like the name poor mans koi though lol
Interestingly, I don't find it degrading or insulting. It could be a compliment actually for being an inexpensive koi alternative.
@@carbrickscity Hm I guess I never thought of it like that
Bristols and London shubnkins are the best.
I didn't know I had a sarasa I just knew it had an orange forhead
Immediately after asking the question my best guess so far is the American Japanese ones
You are right 😄
What are the ones that have more than one tail called?
Those ones are Fancy Goldfish or Fantail Goldfish
The koi in the chain stores are always culls. Very low quality but that being said, i found a beautiful one there. But i usually see koi with kinks at those stores :(
Yeah I imagine they sell the really nice ones for a lot elsewhere
@@TobiasHolenstein yeah the breeders get first picks for the EXPENSIVE perfect marked ones. Resellers are next in lines for pricey pets and then culls are sold to chain stores
@@EyezLikaFox̌ Ah ok I see. Makes sense I guess

Wow that's really good. What size of aquarium do you have?
@@TobiasHolenstein 90 gallon plus it has plants and two filters

@@TobiasHolenstein I have other fish in there but there smaller and some temprate fish ( in-between cold water and tropical) I have two other goldfish in there also a black moor who's 7 years old and about 7-8 inches and a stunted rescue koi/goldfish who is only 6 inches but apparently 15-20 years old
You’re hilarious I loved watching this it was very informative with some humor !
I bought one right before Christmas last year and it died only 3 days of getting him I was so upset!
