Best automotive channel on RUclips in my opinion.

Cool build! The same stuff went on my 2001 ram over the years. Muffler, manifolds, overdrive, leafsprings. Then the rust came in and had me replace bed rails, inside frame supports. With these trucks there worth keeping going because everything is in stock at brick and mortar or the hardware isle at a home improvement store.

This takes me back to my old 1992 2500 Suburban. I had to replace my manifolds as well. It did have a 4l80 and a full floating 12 bolt factory geared to 4.10, but it was being motivated by the 190hp TBI 350. That poor truck couldn't hold a slight Ohio incline at 65mph without dropping into 3rd while EMPTY. Loaded was even worse, while getting 11 mpg the whole time. It was a rusted mess that I eventually sold and replaced with a 2001 5.3 Yukon XL that got better fuel mileage and could tow more at the same time. I still see it driving around the town I sold it in almost 5 years later.

    Awesome Rich
Just wondering when it’s going to get a BUS ENGINE!
These videos are only EPIC. Never a dull moment. Enjoyed the ‘explaination’ of how you went for buying the ‘support truck’, photos on social media owners posted/comments etc.. swinging the idea that it was a very well ‘fettled’ truck but the trans was on its way out. That’s everytime in my vehicle purchasing experiences… EVERYTIME! Not just a transmission but every other part also.. you almost seem ‘HUMAN’.. but of course that’s just our crazy minds overworking etc.
Keep on keeping on this channel is by far the best for project builds in my (usually wrong but not this time) opinion. Best wishes to all involved..
(Don’t under estimate your influence and inspiration for us mere mortals.. it’s life changing for some of us!)

Nice truck but what you needed was a 8 Lug 2500, totally different beast in the GMT400 platform of trucks. the 6 Lug 2500 trucks are basically a1500 with a slightly higher GVW, 9.5" 14 bolt rear, bigger rear brakes, 1 extra leaf in the spring pack.
The engine, trans, transfercase, front diff., steering and front suspension are all identical to a 1500.
The 8 lug 2500 trucks from 1988-2000 have a 10.5" 14 bolt rear, hefty 3" wide leaf spring pack, TH400 or 4L80E trans (1991+), larger diameter torsion bars, bigger front and rear brakes, bigger front hub bearing assemblies, etc. It's just a heavier duty truck all around even the frame.

So I guess there are some jurisdictions(or at least there used to be) where it would be harder to register a truck if it was heavy duty rated. So GM's answer in the 90s was to make half ton trucks with heavy duty suspension marked as 2500. They had no higher tow rating and the rear springs were the only thing changed(and possibly the brakes). They also put in lower gearing.
They then switched in the 2000s the other way by making 2500s into 1500hd by putting in lower rated rear springs. They stopped after 2003 so I assume they either didn't think it was worth it anymore or the law changed.
I personally never would buy a 2500 6 lug(those 4l60s are bad enough on regular half tons, much less one bought with the express purpose of towing and hauling) The rear axles also have a bad habit of grenading on the highway.
The 1500hds are perfectly fine though.

    • @91CTD

the 6 LUG 2500's GMT400 trucks all had the 14 bolt 9.5" rear axle vs the 10 bolt 8.5" in the 1500's. The rear brakes are also larger .

I bought a vortec 383 strocker that is smog compliant in CA ( 390 hp / 440 lbs torque) and had the 4l60e built and it made a great tow PU. I end up with about $12,000 in to it however I have 70,000 mi warranty on the motor and 40,000 on the transmission, if I had bought something new I would have had 4 to 5 times that amount in it.

Ive been that route except mine was a farm truck with rusty bed and rusted around the edges,i had a early 94 Chevy extended cab short bed Z71 onyx gloss black with the quicksilver center stripe running down the sides and the tailgate, and it had engine issues with the tbi 350 bored 0.40 over the previous owner removed the cat because they bought the wrong exhaust pipe tubing kit for the truck cat flange was bigger, and they welded the cat back exhaust pipe tubing kit directly to the back of the truck downpipes coming back to the y pipe that got cut off and it was a deep tone dual glass pack muffler and heartthrob stainless steel 2.25 inlet and 3 1/2 inch slant cut single wall exhaust tips and when it backfired through the exhaust pipe and tips it was deafening sound like the 12+16 guage double barrel side by side shotgun going off simultaneously LOUD!!! Anyways after all the the maintenance issues that the rebuilt truck didn't get it finally gotten straightened out new fuel pump sending unit assembly from Spectre premium, replacement a team performance tbi distributor O'Reilly Auto parts ignition coil bwd, and the napa 7mm high temp resistant silicone jacket belden ignition wire set and the ac Delco r45ts spark plugs it kind of ran ok, swap in a gm ac Delco ignition control module and it ran Bett but would still snap and backfire when you get into it neighbors hated my truck. ... finally after rebuilding it twice except replaced the injectors and was having a issue with the injector pod leaking pulled out the injectors and realized it was two different injectors on the passenger side was the 5279 a lower lph 305 fuel injector and the right side of the exhaust pipe and tip is the side it usually backfire through,, the dr side had the right 5206 350tbi and the ac Delco fuel pump relay only worked part of the time, they had taken the motor from a 87 Chevy p30 bread truck step van lol and it used the wrong oil pressure sensor switch/fuel pump cutoff switch for the early 94 truck so another reason it was backfiring when I would get into it taking off from the stop sign, and the factory tbi from the 87 the throttle shaft bushings were gone fuel leaked out the bottom of the tbi and so did air lol, so I said screw that and got on marketplace and found someone parting out a relatively lower mileage tbi 350 truck and it had not been messed with so I gave him about $60 and swapped out the entire tbi and tossed it out of the doghouse of the truck on the ground, and then the tps sensor only works right from 1800rpm to half throttle so changed that and it ran good!!! Rhen the replacement transmission from a 1990 Chevy k2500 th700r4/4L60 quit shifting into third gear then lost first, then wouldn't shift at all and I am like nope I am done with this truck and my buddy wanted it anyways, but I only decided that because I was offered the 2000 dodge ram laramie slt quad cab long bed 318 magnum V8 46 RE AT manual shift transfer case lever on the floor gloss black with most of the white pinstripe 1500 4x4...

That's a light duty Chebby 2500. The HDs had fender flairs and other options. I had a two tone 1989 2500 Scottsdale light duty 2wd, TH400 and a 4:10 posi that ran flawlessly until I sold the truck with 215k miles. The engine was another story. It lost compression on one cylinder at 75k and the valve stem seals where leaking. It had 70k miles on it when I bought the truck. A GM Goodwrench engine cost $1,6oo in 1996. Besides replacing fan clutches and alternators - I kept a spare in the truck - and non-greaseable lower ball joints which let go when backing out of a gas station, the interior was the most durable I've ever had in a vehicle. The built quality was also better over the square body years except for certain paint clear code pealing issues. The 1996-2002 MY with the Vortec engines were quite an improvement over the gutless TBI engines.

One thing about the mid 90's trucks, especially the Vortec starting in 96 with the 5.0, 5.7 and 7.4, the catalytic converters are known to fail, they will destroy the muffler, people will get their cats changed, leave the muffler because "it's still good", nope, that thing is clogged, change it all

My 93 f150’s trans went out on me, the front pump failed and it wouldn’t shift anymore, it’s probably rebuildable because when going downhill the speed built up enough to shift into the remaining gears and overdrive. And as it sits it makes Cavitating pump sounds and will move in reverse and drive. Also I just bought an Arkansas crew cab obs Ford diesel dually from my friend and might rebuild it.

Rich is right, the further east you go the more religious of a following these get. We dont care the mileage, we will rebuild a motor and transmission if the frame is still there! Sadly ours dont have frames anymore. Our trucks hit under 200k and theres just nothing left of it anymore.

My z71 had good floors and doors and a really decent shape dash and the tbi obs dash lights illuminated the way that they were designed to with no burnout spots so I left it that way and the factory floor shifted transfer case lever plate was also illuminated and it all worked, the factory control head was still in it but the factory amplifier control module was not under the dash and it instead had a half assed instead pioneer deh 150mp best buy special with the tsg4244 4x6 dash speakers and I swapped out the pioneer for a sony cdx L600x cd player black faceplate version I like the look of much better id prefer the factory control head but I was not spending $200 for the compatible amplifier module so it would work..

Those 33" meats on the OBS exacerbated the issue of mediocre tranny. TV n RUclips personalities like to toss on big meat n profile cool rims but rarely if ever address the ring n pinion gears. Changing the rpm that the drive train now operates at has a negative domino effect on everything thereafter. Rebuild the tranny: update clutch packs, install proper torque converter to match truck's work load requirements, proper valve body AND regear pumpkins to match change in tire diameter then recalibrate speedo to make new parts play together as friends. I know you know all this, but it gets expensive n you rather spend time money n effort on more fun stuff. We all get it. Keep the good content coming.
