Another great "how-to" video. You really have a gift for providing just the right amount of info without dragging the video out too long. Very impressive.
29 Feb, 2020. You're much more polished and at ease now. But five years ago, you were still very educational. I just changed my water pump in my 95 Chevy truck. Thanks!
Nice Video. Thank you very much. I watched it to familiarize myself. Making sure that I still knew how to do this job, since my first one was in the mid-1960s. There were no clutch fans back in the mid-1950s, which is what I had owned at that time. The hardest part was the loaner clutch wrench tool kit. It was a stamped steel set. The wide fork that fits over the water pump pulley bolts had to be hammered on from the end and we had to use a 15" crescent set to 35mm to loosen the clutch fan nut. The stamped 36mm wrench kept slipping off. This was certainly exacerbated due to a very wobbly bearing on the old water pump. We had apparently shut it down just before it might have come loose and damaged the radiator.
I saw a couple of comments about using the "green" antifreeze rather than Dexcool. I talked to an engineer at Prestone and a GM mechanic about this 13 years ago. They both said Dexcool eats intake gaskets. The only reason they use Dexcool is for longer coolant life. I've been using Prestone regular ethylene glycol every since with no problems at all. I have a 2000 Tahoe Z71 5.7.
Excellent video, easy to follow, and your camera work is great. I hate watching cat videos where people don't use tripods. I'm always dizzy and sick after watching them. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Great Job. my sister in Ohio needed to replace her water pump. asked me. I live in Chicago Illinois. done many 350 water pumps. Anyway your video was the Best One On Replacing The pump. old school job should take about 1 hour. LoL ;-)
South Main Auto Repair If you ever need to remove the viscous fan clutch for a BM Trouble U they have left hand threads, so it righty loosey, lefty tighty.
Thanks for the help. Just did my pump today on my 1997 Silverado. The hardest part was getting the fan nut loose, well besides re-installing the stupid fan shroud. :)
South Main Auto Repair No. My largest adjustable wrench was too small, so I ended up using a pipe wrench. I hit the nut with some PB Blaster, positioned my pry bar on the pulley bolts and used a quick tap with a hammer. I'm so thankful for videos like this. I'm pretty mechanical and do most of my own work. Great satisfaction in fixing things myself.
We have to use what we have at hand. Good job sounds like you got it. I have actually used the plasma cutter in the past and a piece of 1/4" sheet metal and cut out my own fan clutch wrenches. Desperate times call for desperate measures :)
Thank you. Your very clear precise steps were exactly what i needed to tackle this job. Im not a pro and I dont have all the specialty tools but I was able to diagnose fix this issue with ease. Hopefully
I wanted to say thank you for your help with this! I have not done one in years and your video was awesome. will teach my 14 yr old how to do it. Very clear and descriptive video!! Now if you could only help us fix the ac drainage issue..lol
Always watching Eric O is fantastic 👍🏻 But you sound like a great teacher in this one with only one voice tone.......🤣🤣 Now your latest video Eric O are just as good but very funny with you fantastic terminology like panther pee and the one and only brake cleaner lol 😆 Love everything you do Eric O 👍🏻 Sweet from Stevie a big fan back in the uk 🇬🇧
bout to do mine. I've replaced almost all pulleys but the alternator and waterpump. this video will come in handy beings it's the same motor just different models.
Before putting the new pump on replace both of the rubber heater hoses directly behind it ...cheap easy maintenance that prevents inconvenience down the road !
I have a 1997 Suburban LS, 5.7L which I will be changing a water pump on soon. I watched several other videos and yours by far is the best. Other videos showed removing the radiator and not removing the idler pulley. Your way makes a lot more sense and it a lot less work. For those of us who juat have regular hand tools, how do you suggest we take the fan off. Thanks.
Hahaha... so monotone! 😐 Night & day to the Eric O of today..... Thank goodness for the commentary & jokes in the vids present day!! 😊Although this is informative as a step by step, how to vid....
The only thing you might consider is showing more of what your clutch removal tools are. Otherwise this video is very helpful. Is it necessary to use the spray-tac?
Thanks man perfect tutorial. You obviously know your stuff. Is there any other way to remove the fan without that special tool. I tried loosing the fan nut by wacking a pipe wrench on the nut that holds the fan. No luck loosening it. Is there a way to remove the pump with the fan still on? I would like to go ahead and change the fan clutch too. Thanks again for your help.
Use the adjustable wrench, and leave the serptentine belt on for good resistence. move the wrench anticlockwise with good force, it will come loose. I have my own 99 GMC Suburban. hope that help in your fix :-)
when we started making that fan clutch i asked how are you going to get it off ..dodge trucks used it first.. my 92 k1500 still has the 4 bolt set up..
Ac Delco for good quality part. if cost is an issue, Napa will do just fine. they last long time if the antifreeze is regularly changed. hope that helps
most of the time these are easy, unless there are lots of oil leaks, and dry rot of the hoses, etc. I used to do that spray tack on the gaskets, but probably half the time they still fell off into my bucket of coolant. another tech should me use a little dab of silicone next to one of the holes then put the gasket on, gasket stays perfect, no all I ever do. I hate it when I change a gasket and the thing is just covered in silicone both sides, I have never understood this. I have asked guys that do it why, and they say insurance so they don't get a leak comeback, I understand that part, but it just makes the next guys job that much worse if he has to remove that to do something else in the future.
Oh yeah I know what your sayin when the silicone is oozing out of every crack haha. I use to have the problem with the spray tack but I discovered it was my own fault. Let it sit long enough and that stuff works great so long as the surface is clean and dry. I tend to be impatient and always tried to hurry it along... plop.... down in the coolant bucket haha
I think that is why I switched to the dab of silicone, because I am impatient. I never enjoyed loosing them into the coolant bucket, wasn't so bad with the newer metal ones, but those cardboard ones, lets just say I've had to get a new set a time or too.
Haha I think I know what your saying kenman1717 . Pretty sure anyone who does this has had to buy a few gaskets over again :) Remember sometimes we need to slow down to go fast....
Great video. Could you add suburban to the title. I would have liked to watch this video first but it didnt show up in my search results. Also I found if you dont have the tool to remove the fan that a couple good whacks with a hammer and a large chisel on the side of the nut your are trying to loosen and it will spin right off.
I assume some one had changed this one out. See it a lot on old high mileage vehicles. Not a big deal really. Lower service intervals, other than that it will still provide good protection in this case.
In a month I am doing a 52 hour drive back home to ontario, from the remote north... I am driving my old 1990 honda accord that i've kept in tip top shape here... It has 170 000 kilometers on it, my question is this, I did the timing belt myself 3 years ago when it had 100 000km on it, I left the original water pump. Would it be a good idea to replace this b4 the trip? or will it start weeping b4 it needs to be replaced? This is an interferance motor so I know it isn't something to play around with... After the first 10 hours of the drive I at least have cell reception however.
Rick James Boy that is a tough question. I have had many customers not do it on the first t-belt job and make it all the way to the second t-belt job at 200k with no problem... then again some of them haven't too... Hard call my friend.
yes I have a ML 2001 430 an after hearing $900 for the water pump that a TSB plainly say harmonic balancer pulley because of supplier quality.... but now I have this to look forward to letz get her done oh but first the Air Pump should I change that two a long with the pully... in short how much harder do you think it would take has 167,000 miles
Are these pretty good SUV's? I have a chance to buy a well maintained 1997 Tahoe 4WD 350 5.7 V-8, guess they all are the same engine anyway, with 230K miles but you would never know it...for $1800.00...I know the owner well and he took very good care of it..adult driven all it's life..no towing either..but has the package..what do you think? I have seen a few for sale locally for double and they looked like they were in a war!!
Yes... or rtv on ONE side of the gasket, usually whatever is facing the component. It makes cleaning the block easier in the future or next time it needs replacing.
it really depends on the make and model. Most GM products use the same platform for many of the models so if you have a 2000 Escalade its a safe bet to think its built from the same platform as this. look at the video and look for some points of similarity ( like the alternator, AC compressor and tensioner) if it matches up its a good bet that this video will help. Its a well made video with alot of helpfull tips
hi sir lo ok i have a 1999 chevy tahoe 4x4 sl 5.7 i was driving and it just stop i pull up i open the hood and smoke came out later i check the oil it was good no water in the oil i put water in the recovery tank and the radiator but water Start to came out of the muffler and went i Start de engine it runs go but them it start to Shake

Really like the "instructional" aspect of these older vids...More please!
Awesome video. Saved me time and money, thanks for the easy step by step directions. Took me about a hour and a half with just hand tools.
A recent fan. Just came across this "old" video and boy have gotten better at making videos!
Another great "how-to" video. You really have a gift for providing just the right amount of info without dragging the video out too long. Very impressive.
Hey thanks Jeffrey Cardimen .. well some of my videos do drag a little just fyi :)

Been using dexcool for 25 years on my 99.
The old serious Dr. O days haha
I noticed that. LOL!
Reminds me of the old Dragnet scripts. :-) Eric's come a long way, hasn't he?
Excellent video, easy to follow, and your camera work is great. I hate watching cat videos where people don't use tripods. I'm always dizzy and sick after watching them. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Nice!! I was taught to make gaskets like that way back in my Millwright apprenticeship... memories :-) (1979-80)
By far the best video on doing this repair. Wish I had watched this first. Thank you!
Great Job. my sister in Ohio needed to replace her water pump. asked me. I live in Chicago Illinois. done many 350 water pumps. Anyway your video was the Best One On Replacing The pump. old school job should take about 1 hour. LoL ;-)
Love the old Vids. No bs, strait to the point. HAHA
That's an awesome tool for the Fan!
I got mine off with a large adjustable wrench and some taps from a hammer on said wrench.
***** Yep that will work too.

Great tip trimming the gaskets with a hammer !
wow you just saved me a lot of money thank you very much for taking the time to RUclips ur work lol cant believe how easy you made it
+Justin Mills no prob

great video. Through without being long winded. Excellent job
Great video , very easy to follow, and very professional .
Terrific and gave me confidence to change my water pump and save the bucks.
Awesome to see how your videos have evolved!
Great instructional video Erick,prize worthy.
ive been watchin all your videos and this is the first one i see where you are all serious and "boring" lol
I think it just took Eric a little while to get his sea legs, so to speak.
R Factor - anyone who has started a you tube channel will tell you it is awkward at first .
Took that fan off like a boss!!
These beast trucks are damn easy to work on. Id rather work on a vortec 350 than a damn civic. Gotta love the 5.7, a hot rodders toy.
bout to do mine. I've replaced almost all pulleys but the alternator and waterpump. this video will come in handy beings it's the same motor just different models.
Good video. I like the way you just get down to business
like your masterful use of the precision ball peen hammer instrument.
This one is like one of those dealer videos from the 90s
This is very educational...good job mate.
I love these old ones YOU. SOUND. LIKE.
A. ROBOT. SO. MATTER. A. FACT LMBO LOVE Y'ALL BROTHER
Before putting the new pump on replace both of the rubber heater hoses directly behind it ...cheap easy maintenance that prevents inconvenience down the road !
One tip could be to squeeze the radiator hoses to help purge some of the air from the cooling system.
Thanks! Could be. These systems self bleed pretty good. Thanks for watching!
Best video ever!!!! It took me one day.lol you da man
nice job, all your videos are great. Thank you.
real good job that's the way it is done
Great job again like always
You made that look easy.
Most excellent!

Put a breaker bar on it and whack it with a hammer.
Old cars have so much room to do the repair.
hose pic now I know what it's for thank you I had one didn't even know what the hell it was
An old video, but most the likely the best one on a 5.7 water pump R&R.
aww this makes me miss my 97 k1500
Im sure , they are awsome trucks if you take care of them.i have 97 c\k 1500 z71 in good shape. Was offered 15k told them no thankyou

yeah, if you just have a fan wrench, you can smack it with a hammer in the direction it needs to go to come off, nine times out of ten that works well
yep, Like Danny said, couple of hammer hits will come loose easily....
Useful, good job
Those gaskets made me cry
great video , thank you...
This is great, thanks...
Man that belt has seen better days ;) .... I wondering if on this point the orginal rotation would even mutter :D
Well done.
Great Video, any suggestions on how to add coolant back in or just fill it up, should it be running or off?
Who is this Eric O guy? He reminds me of my eighth grade PE teacher. A born educator and a model of no-grabass behavior.
when we started making that fan clutch i asked how are you going to get it off ..dodge trucks used it first.. my 92 k1500 still has the 4 bolt set up..
Have to do my 1999 suburban very helpful thank you for the vid. what pump did you replace with AC delco or Napa ???
Ac Delco for good quality part. if cost is an issue, Napa will do just fine. they last long time if the antifreeze is regularly changed. hope that helps
I got a car-quest, it was assembled in the USA and got 90k out of it the new ones are also assembled in the USA

It appeared the vehicle had green antifreeze in it. GM calls for Dex Cool only. What are your thoughts about that?
I assume some one had changed this one out. See it a lot on old high mileage vehicles. Not a big deal really. Lower service intervals, other than that it will still provide good protection in this case.
What's all the causes of presure loss in the hose on the cooling systems. My upper hose is always soft but gets harder when revving up.

Do they always weep when they're wearing out? or can the bearing fail and the pump doesn't weep?
No and Yes. They do not always leak and I have seen bearings in them screaming but no leakage
Thanks man appreciate it!
Hope you made it ok
"corporate clutch fan tools".....LMAO! Did I hear that right? So true.
after changing water pump, I'm blowing bubbles into overflow tank. No coolant in water. Any thoughts on this new event?
yes I have a ML 2001 430 an after hearing $900 for the water pump that a TSB plainly say harmonic balancer pulley because of supplier quality.... but now I have this to look forward to letz get her done oh but first the Air Pump should I change that two a long with the pully... in short how much harder do you think it would take has 167,000 miles
Got this to do this week. But I dont hear an air compressor or see any brake clean?!
Did you torque the water pump bolts?
thanks for this...
I was once told never to lay the fan and this type fan clutch assy. flat when off of the vehicle. Always keep it verticle. Any truth in that?
And just to ask,, I may have missed it, was there a reason the thermostat. Wasn't replaced. Just a common practice of mine.
Emt Scythe Mmmm dunno really, just fixed the leak is all...
Emt Scythe Only reason to replace a thermostat is if it was not cooling properly.
Thermostats wear over time, springs weaken. I always replace them as a practice.

99 chevy tahoe... yeah I got one of those hanging around.
Good lord ... that was like cyborg/robo Eric O .
somebody put a ton of silicone on my waterpump gaskets what is a good way to clean that off? thanks
I am wondering if you have this fan clutch tool on your Amazon store???
Old style, Indian head shellac. Glue the gaskets to the pump.
is that all you put on there, is that spray gasket sealant???
Yes... or rtv on ONE side of the gasket, usually whatever is facing the component. It makes cleaning the block easier in the future or next time it needs replacing.
hi ima work on my 95 Tahoe water pump is leaking my question is if I dnt have the property tools to remove the fan how else can I remove it...
thumbs up, fer sure
You can totally tell 5 year videos from recent one’s. 🙂
somebody told me to use the orange antifreeze is that right
Whatever you have in there already. ..NEVER MIX coolant. Or if unsure, flush it out and pick a coolant or go by owners manual.
I have a 96 mercury sable it what can I do for it the power steering pump
would this application work on a 2000 escalade?
it really depends on the make and model. Edgar Beltran
these beast trucks are known for lower intake gasket failures which lets loose some coolant.
what happen to only dexcool
Holy shit man so serious
is it street name SOUTH MAIN
Sure easier than my old ZJ 5.2
Anyone ever have their water pump break off and smash into the radiator? 350 motor, if you have do you know what caused it?
didn't tighten the bolts lol
The only parts of the water pump that are attached to the block are two small pieces that have the bolts still holding them on, happened a while back, have since figured it out and fixed it.
Richard Rathma
Why so serious Eric O. Lol
Hey Siri how doHow do I replace a hub bearing on a 2000 Chevrolet wonton
12:26 LMAO. I hate it when that happens.
Lol true story!
