    Absolutely awesome that you put in the out takes for the pins and retainer springs! Nice to know someone who is experienced with the job needed several tries to succeed. After watching a video and attempting to reproduce the single successful result shown, and failing to do so, this is usually the precise moment the "EXPLETIVES" begin for me...
    Thank you soooo much for not editing them OUT!!!

      Glad the video helped. I always dread putting those in. Sometimes it goes on the first attempt, other times it takes 20 tries.

    This is BY FAR the best video on F-150 rear brakes I have found. You are a total pro, very concise and clear explanations. The highlighting of parts that you are referring to goes above and beyond anyone on RUclips. I watched about 10 videos on F-150 rear brakes, and not one properly explained how to adjust the drum brakes through the back of the brake assy, so that the rotor can be easily pulled off. On a 1-to 10 scale I give this a 9.9

    Insane Oil, having owned and done the brakes on cars since the 1960's I can state with experience that all drum brakes that have been on the car/truck for a year or more require that you pull the brake pads in by spinning the star adjustment wheel before trying to remove the drum. The unused portion of the outside of the brake drum always has a rust ring and the brake shoes always wear into the brake drum thereby requiring the mechanic to adjust the brake shoes in and away from the drum to gain clearance for removal. It is the nature of the part. Nice check list though.

    EXCELLENT video !! I just did my rear brakes on my '09 F150 XLT and I wish I had seen your video earlier. I like the idea of leaving the upper spring in place and spreading the parking brake pads apart to remove them. I removed the upper spring first and due to rust it was a bit of a challenge. Again, great video Jon!!!

    Hello,
    Nice job on the video.
    For what it is worth with installing those spring retainers. I use needle nose vice grips to pre-depress those little springs from hell.
    Depress or flatten the spring retainer with needle nose vice grips, line up that pin/stud in the slot, then turn the tip of the pin/stud with needle nose pliers 90 degrees, release the needle nose vice grips. It worked well for me because I only have 2 hands.
    Best,
    Jeff

    I always open the brake bleeder and then press the piston back in. This way you get all that old fluid that's been inside the caliper out of the system, and not pushed back in, then I top the reservoir with fresh fluid when I'm all done. Great video though, very informative. Thank you for taking the time to make it.

    Great video, thanks for posting! For the parking brake adjuster/release on the top (the winged hinge that sticks through the backing plate and attaches to the cable) is there anyway to get those out to clean up/replace them without removing the whole hub assembly? mine are completely gummed up with rust etc. and after a whole day of spraying penetrating oil and scraping with a flat blade I can't get them loose enough to work. I have to keep hammering them back to the release position after pulling the bake release inside. However, when I try to pull them out of the backing plate they bump up against the hub.
    Can I pull the hub off to remove those clips without ruining the bearings in there? I don't really want to have to repack the bearings if I can help it.

    Watching this video now as I will be back at it tomorrow. All new rear calipers , discs and pads installed. But e brake is messed up now. I will jack up the rear again and get it in stands. See today. My wheels extremely hard to turn I think it seems normal as it turns the differential and the opposite wheel the opposite way. Seems hard to spin freely to check for drag ti adjust That is why I loosened the rv rake as j in though they were locked uo

    Your video is very well done and very helpful. Thank you. When adjusting the star bolt you say you will go back later and adjust it further, but I don't think you showed that in your video. I have just finished one side of my truck, but am wondering if I need to go back and adjust the star to prevent parking brake rubbing when not engaged. If you coul, please advise. Again, thanks you.

    • @InsaneOil
      @InsaneOil  5 лет назад

      Adjustment of the star wheel is initially done by feel. The braking system will self adjust to some degree as you drive the vehicle. It is designed to do this just as it would if the brake pad linings were getting worn. If you are hearing noises or it doesn't feel quite right, it may be necessary to readjust things.

    LOL....Those pins are a pain to hold in place when you are doing this by yourself. I ended up inserting the pin and then inserting a wooden dowel in the backing plate recess and clamping the other end of the dowel to the axle bracket. That way the pin could not drop out. It took me a lot of swearing to finally figure it out and after that it was a breeze!

      +Juan Rivas Hello Juan. My '09 does not have an adjuster for the cable itself. Check yours at the spot where it splits in two and each cable goes to each rear wheel. There may be a threaded adjuster there. But, for my '09 I don't see one.

    So when the back end is on stands yiur in park correct ? Not neutral to get wheel to move more freely ? If it’s in park I don’t get whey the wheels would even want to move at all ?

    • @InsaneOil
      @InsaneOil  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, I was in park. Any luck? I did have an issue where the parking brake connection hardware was sticking, so when I would release the parking brake the system wouldn't fully disengage.

    • @mick5740
      @mick5740 4 месяца назад

      @@InsaneOil I ended up jacking up the rear while n neutral Then I was able to kind of spin the rear tires and listen to the shoes on the drums. This really had me stumped and scratching my head. Seems the rear tires should not be allowed to move freely while in park right ??? Makes sense to me. So while in neutral they did and seemed normal. Well after all this I couldn’t adjust the parking brake to work correctly again. Either would be on constant or only in reverse or no brake whatsoever. Tryed adjusting aboyt ten different times. When I started this the truck had a strong parking brake but a really hard p brake pedal. So hard it was useless for the elderly owner who never uses it anyway. I was hoping I was going to be able to make his pedal easier to activate

      Brake caliper grease, silicone paste, or some mechanics in a pinch, wheel bearing grease

    Anyone know what to do if the rotor is still stuck after using a hammer and adjusting the small gear. Moved it both directions and nothing loosened up

      Spray penetrating oil and get medieval with the hammer

    Also, what retailer did you get the shoes from? did it include the hardware?

    • @ricebike

      Any aftermarket parts store ... parking brake shoes are the search words. This is the only flaw with this well edited video for newbies

    • @ricebike
      @ricebike 4 года назад

      Parking brake shoe hardware kit for the springs, retainer pins and sometimes the star wheel adjustment assembly

    My 2001 f150 bi-fuel came with the 7-lug hub. 🙄 Thanks Ford, and no, I’ll never forgive you for that design idea. Wasn’t a big deal until I upgraded the rims. Then the hundreds of rim options went down to two. I could’ve bought blanks, but... really?

      If the caliper piston is seized, you might need to replace the caliper.

    Very Informative. Have A Hayes Shop Manual, like you get at Advance or Autozone.
    I viewed your RUclips after Replacement. :-( Thank-you for Taking The time For Making Video. Very On Point! My Lesson..NEVER Assume Nothing. With today's Technology, I'll now Check Via RUclips too.
    Kudos! Commend You on Staying On Point!
