If somebody had told me there is a 20 minute, 55 second video on brake pads that would keep my attention and not get boring I would have suggested they visit a psych ward. But I would have to apologize to them because this is ABSOLUTELY the best how-to video I have ever seen. I have a feeling Jon Olson could explain the federal tax code in an understandable way.
This is one of the best teaching videos i have seen on youtube. The pace of the presentation, the video quality, the graphics, and the clear and concise narration were first rate. Thank you.
@@antoniodiaz7039 I disagree. This would be very helpful to demonstrate to newbies just how easy a brake job really is. Everybody has to learn for the first time. You had to learn the first time too. It will save a lot of guys a VERY large amount of money. For those of us who've done it before, it's nice to see exactly how our particular vehicle looks.
Just changed the front/rear pads/rotors on a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan and watched several videos describing the process. Very thankful to them for posting but this video is by far and away the best one I've seen. It took me half the time to understand the entire process. Many thanks for you spending your time and posting this video. My 20 year old F-150 thanks you to.
What a video, I've never touched brakes before and after watching this I would feel completely comfortable doing a front brake job on my '01 F150. Tremendous use of RUclips!
This video is extremely impressive. Attention to detail and margin of error, damn good camera use and a very reasonable talking speed. The best auto repair video I have seen yet....
Great video! Only thing I would add is smear a little anti-seize on the back of the pads and where metal comes in contact with metal to prevent rust and quiet brakes.
Thanks Jon for taking the request. The video is going to help me a lot it was very informative. Like Mac said, great camera angles. Looking forward to more great vids... -Ed
Thanks so much for this! Much more info than I expected and very thorough. My brakes are in a dangerous situation and I can't afford to go get them done so I can't thank you enough!!
There are many great things about this video, and one of them includes being able to watch how it’s done. I don’t plan to do it myself, mostly because I’m extremely allergic to petroleum by-products, but makes me feel better about saving my money to get the work done by a pro.
Thanks.. think I can do it.. My only concern is,,, would we not want to do everything while we're in there?? Meaning the barring too? Just do it all at one time..
99% correct, only things I saw, was open the bleader valve when pushing pistons back into caliper(if not your pushing potential dirt and etc back into system) and clean brackets befor so as to not have to clean rotors over and over. But thumbs up and great video. Thank u
I like how they always cut and come back to the moment before they break it loose!! We Want to Know What You Did In Between the time to really get it loose!
@InsaneOil you're probably right! I was just so aggravated because I had been sitting there for 2 hours fighting this rotor! All to find out that the rotor and the wheel hub is all one unit!🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ I should not have made a comment at all I was just highly irritated!!!
I also take out the slider pins and clean them up since i have everything off, and i use the ford silicone grease to put on the hardware where the pads sit on and the ends of the brake pads so everything sides back and forth nice, less chance of squeaking.
I am extremely happy with this video, but no brake grease on the slides? I was taught to use a little grease on the slides and a bit on the back of the pads
You can usually tell that your brakes are low and in need of service without taking off your wheel. If you're low on brake fluid or you've had to add any over the past year and don't have a brake fluid leak.
The one major issue this video doesn't cover is the fact that 97-04 F-150 models may have different rotor assemblies. For instance, my 2000 4.6l v8 requires replacing a one piece rotor and hub assembly and the bearings, races and seals. So you may want to add that caveat, as it makes the job a tiny bit more complicated, also more expensive (though still less so than going to a mechanic).
Agreed. There are many different setups with vehicles. Always check the repair manual, lots of RUclips videos, and know that although it looks super simple on a video...your application might not be the exact same.
I have the exact truck and experiencing some problems I was hoping you might be able to shed some light on. truck turns off while at low idle but will crank right up. while driving at slower speeds and up a hill when I release the gas the RPM's drop to about 500 and the dashboard lights and my headlights dim a little bit and will go back to normal once I press the gas pedal and get rpms back up. I also watched your video on the Amsoil throttle body cleaner. when I undo my air filter from the throttle body and crank my truck up it will run for about 2 or 3 seconds and then shut off, every time. at red lights or stop signs I have to put it in neutral and rev the truck up a little just to keep it running. the battery doesn't seem to be weak...although it is probably time to get a new one. I appreciate the help.

How easy should the axle spin after install? Mine seems pretty firm. Need two hands to spin the lug screws around. I replaced the caliper and the rotors. Is the rotor warped? I set the caliper pistons back to flush.
Axle should rotate freely without brake pads installed. Once you install brake pads, check to see that they slide in the hardware. If they slide, the axle should still rotate. Reset pistons, install caliper, axle should still rotate. Set caliper...axle should rotate with light friction.
mdh87-You've probably already replaced your caliper by now...but I'll respond in case you're still interested. When bleeding brakes, start at the corner farthest from the master cylinder, then do the next farthest and so forth. On US vehicles (and other left-drive vehicles), that usually means to do the rear right first, rear left, front right, and then front left. As a note when doing brakes, I always bleed the brakes prior to replacing the pads. If you don't, you will be pushing contaminated fluid up through ABS module when you push the pistons back in. ABS modules can cost over $1000 so it's good insurance....especially because the fluid is often the most contaminated at the caliper due to heat cycles. Hope this helps!

Did this now have pedal going to the floor?
Sean Brown If your pedal is going to the floor it may mean that you need to bleed your brakes or flush the entire brake system with new fluid.
Your pedal going to the floor could also mean the ABS Pump/Module is going out. I will be posting a video on this repair in the next couple weeks.
