I thought Paul did a wonderful job of taking care of the character. He never once hit any of those jarring notes that we've seen in previous biopics, or even previous Paul Dano movies. His Brian Wilson was always sympathetic, and very like-able.

Love Brian and I love Paul, both very talented guys. Brian is one of those artists who puts everything out there and doesn't hold back, but that exposes you so much... I think that's why he has the problems with stage fright and such. It's easier to bare your heart in a studio by yourself or among friends than it is in front of an audience of strangers.
The sad part is, he is so lovable and talented, I don't think any crowd of strangers would reject him, but the fear you build in your mind is always so much stronger than the reality.

The effort Paul exhibits just to convey his ideas, says a lot about his process. It’s simply not easy to develop character that deeply. You usually end up with answers to questions that are hard to convey

Yes, Paul really showed Brian's whimsical and childlike joy in creating great music, plus the vulnerability and pain of dealing with an often cold world. In some ways Brian's greatest music really dealt with how life is at times a bittersweet mess full of both beauty and sadness.

I think Dano is so on point about Brian. When Brian was in high school he was a 3 sport athlete and popular, but what his classmates felt towards him was a protectiveness because they could see his vulnerability.

@@rocwater10 Acting isn't always about some uncanny visual impersonation. John Cusack's mannerisms, the way he held himself as Brian, the way he spoke, the way he developed turns of phrase in his dialogue... it was absolutely spot on. Plus, Brian in the late 80s barely looked like himself anyway, he was so far gone with Landy, so it's a nice touch. Give me Cusack as Brian before any Halloween dress-up Wikipedia article masquerading as a biopic.

Joseph Harnett Cusack, by all accounts of those that knew Wilson’s situation with Landy and what basically amounted to the torture of Brian Wilson by Eugene Landy, was every bit as much Brian Wilson as was Dano. The movie was one of the most underrated films I’ve seen in many years.
