- Lenovo sells the RTX 4080 Legion 7i Pro for $2150 and the RTX 4070 model for $1740. Does this price difference represent good value?
In this video I test 11 games on the 140W RTX 4070 Legion 7i Pro against the 175W RTX 4080 in the Cyberpower Tracer VII.
Both laptops have the i9 13900HX CPU.
For those interested I also tested the new game Starfield.
I disabled any GPU overclock that was set up as a default by the manufacturer.

The problem is that 4080 and 4090 mobile have crazy prices this year, even compared to the desktop equivalent (~4070 and ~4070ti desktop).
Yeah, especially the 4090. I've seen prices coming down though. That Legion 7i pro with the 4080 was about $2500 not long back. I just think things every where have gotten expensive. Even eating out has got out of hand.
Massive upgrade going from the 4070 to the 4080. Still at the price point, cant justify either.
Yeah, there is a noticeable difference. I think 8GB VRAM is getting a bit low nowadays if you want to max everything out.
@OWNORDISOWN not really. i run all games on ultras on me 4070. in my country 4080 costs 1k usd more, not gonna happen
Its costs around 4k+ for the basic 4080 in my country a total ripoff
Really appreciate that you test raw performance without DLSS or other kinds of graphics bastaгdization.
Frame generation destroys responsiveness, its useless in pretty much everything that involves accuracy or reaction.
Thanks! Yes, I would rather have native horsepower than some software hack...
Does this come with a NPU processor, I know the Meteor Lake has it but the CPU even the tops on are slower than even the i7.. that is why I am a little hesitant. When using AI I notice it is actually quite slow without an NPU
I don't believe they do. I think that was introduced with 14th Gen.
Looking at this, I wonder about the Legion 9i that is coming out with its 3200 x 2000 resolution, if the 4080 is even worth it
The closest monitor I have to test the 4080 on is a 3440 x 1440 . I think we will still get a pretty decent frame rate in most games. I can test it later on.
Nice work bro, I bought a lenovo legion slim 7 with a 4060, didn't want to spend 300$ more for a 4070 that is only 10% better that it, there is a huge gap between 60-70 class with the 80-90, but between them the difference are slim
Yeah, the 4070 doesn't make much sense to me really.
Jarrod’s results showed that 4070 22% better than 4060 in 1440p
Hey guys i need help, i just order the asus rog strix g17 with 64 gb ram ryzen 9 7940hx and 4070 but I don't know if is a good laptop for gaming due to low vram that is 8gb any recommendations or what i need to do ?
We had a dispute: which laptop will be more productive - MSI Katana with a 4070 mobile video chip and a Full HD screen or MSI Vector with a 4080 mobile, but with a qHD screen. I claim that the younger version will have higher FPS productivity, and therefore overpaying for more powerful hardware does not make sense if we're speaking of gaming experience.
Hi Steve! haven't seen your video for a long time since I bought my legion y740 4 years ago. RUclips algorithm brings me here😇
7:54 the price difference of 4070 and 4080 here in Germany is quite similar to the situation in the US, at least for postgraduate like me. Student discounted prices for those two are 1783.56 Euro and 2311.21 Euro respectively(I have to configure with the worst specs for anything other than CPU and GPU, even without operating system) roughly 30% more expensive.
That being said, I haven't made up my mind yet. My current gear legion Y740 is equipped with 2080 max q. So it's still capable with graphic intensive games. However CPU is lagging behind big time. I'm not sure if it's the problem of 9th gen Intel CPU or tuning from Lenovo back then, i7 9750h on my device idles at 60C and easily goes up to 94C(thermo throttle limit). I sincerely hope that intel's 13th gen CPU performs better in casual tasks...
Good to see you again! I had another viewer telling me that they were still using their Y740 😀. I still use my Aorus x3 v7 with 7820HK and a GTX 1060 for work. It just shows we don't need to upgrade every year! Yes, I would say from 12th gen we saw a big boost in performance on the CPU side and RTX 4000 another jump with the 4080. The 2080MQ is probably half the speed of the 4080 now, but that's still good enough for most games. I have notuved that when I use my 13900HX to render my videos it does it much quicker than even the 12800HX I used to have, it's probably not far off using my GPU to render it now.
My 8 year old 1070 laptop has 8 gb vram. 3 generations later its still the same...
if only 80-90 series were cheaper & less profitable to Nvidia , they would've been great for laptop users.
thanks for the video.
I agree! Thanks for watching 😀
I like the new 40 series. Even the 4050 packs a punch and does not take a lot of power to get good performance. I have the z13 tablet with 4050 65w. Even at 35-40 watts I can run most games maxed out at 1600p. Running Starfield high setting 80% resolution scale with a 30fps lock. Looks just as good as my series x in a tablet with almost no fan noise.
That's very good!
Thinking about getting that Z13 if it goes on sale are you happy overall and can it take a eGPU?
@@kevinjackson7539 the ROG Flow z13 can use the ROG XG mobile
@@OWNORDISOWN very cool thank you
RTX 4070 is aimed at 1080p and RTX 4070 at 1440p. There is also a lot of variance regarding RTX 4070 versions. I had an ASUS TUF A15, and it would not get past 100 ish watts in games, even on 4K in games like Battlefield 1. My new ASUS ROG STRIX G16 punched 125-130 ish watts in Cyberpunk 2077 on 1080p. My current boostclock is 2.685Mhz (+275 OC) and Memory 9000 (+1000 OC) Mhz. I couldn't get these figures on my ASUS TUF A15. So either ASUS (and maybe some other manufacturers) implemented a new Vbios update to allow a higher gpu voltage or something like else. If you want to be sure, just buy an RTX 4080 (also for 1080p), because I think there is way too high of variances regarding RTX 4070's performance.
For laptop in this generation (on Nvidia) U take 4060 with 8gb or 4080 with 12
No, much easy: just take 4060 =)
a legion pro 3080 has 16gig VRAM ..... hopefully there will be a 4080 laptop with 16 gig VRAM .... not sure I need the 4090.... (preferably 1500 to 2k tops)
That would be great 👍
Pretty mad that my laptop has 8GB VRAM in its 2070 and my desktop has 12GB in its 4070ti. Seeing the laptop again have 8GB in the 4070 is a farce!
yep. Nvidia are a bunch of scammers at this point. If they are making laptop and desktop GPUs different again, they must give them different names
Yep, totally agree 👍
I bought a 4070, 32gb ram, 2tb ssd, 12700h laptop for about 1200 USD new. Gaming on a 4k monitor.
Tell me again about the 4070 being a bad buy
That's a good deal for sure, but there are bad deals out there, like the Omen Transcend 16 I just reviewed. $2200 for a 4070 that struggles even to do 120w. Either way, 8GB VRAM will hold you back, especially at 4k. Good luck with that.
just get the asus a16 tuf with the rx 7600 great laptop, great gpu. very impressed.
The 4070 plateauing at ~100W makes me wonder how good it would be if not for that limitation. Seems like Nvidia created the market for a mobile 4080 by throttling the 4070.
My colleague Chris reviewed the MSI Katana with a 100W 4070 and it it wasn't far off the one in the Legion. Still, I wouldn't pay any more than $1500 given the 3070Ti is less than that.
Don't forget this Gen they basically label everything one tier higher in the laptop vs desktop. A 4090 laptop is 4080 desktop silicon size the prices are just bonkers
It's not a wattage limit that's all the voltage it will take long term and it needs more voltage to clock higher. Plus it's not the wattage gimping it it's the fact they used a 4060 desktop die for both the 4060 and 4070 laptop it's why the laptop 4070 has less ram because the die can't support more
If only the 4070 has 10gb vram instead of 8gb, well I wouldn't say it's totally justifiable but at least it has something to offer over the 4060 but I guess nvidia saw the success of 3070ti so they'll probably release the 4070ti with 10gb vram at a later date.
I agree. 10GB would be great. In both the last of us and Watch Dogs it was around 9300MB when maxed out. Perhaps they will do a new sku later on and a speed boost too.
For 4070, the expression that we(ru) use is ideal: "neither fish not meat"
simply put she is useless
if they release a GPU called "4070 ti" it'll most likely have specs of the desktop 4070, meaning 12GB of vram. I mean come on - 10 gigs will also become a limitation pretty soon. At this point might as well aim at 12GB as the minimum.
@@TabalugaDragoni am from india my budget is around 1Lakh-1.5lakh what should i buy?i am confused between Acer predator and legion and also 4060ones or 4070:,Can u suggest me pls:
@@legendarygamerx5059 not sure how much that is in dollars, but if you want Frame generation of these two I suggest 4060, if you don't want it then 3070 and 3070 ti models are usually priced really well these days and have excellent discounts.
4070 only makes sense for a slim thin and light gaming laptop, otherwise would you still pay for the premium for it? That's up to the consumers to consider.
Yeah, for me I wanted a 4080 as I wanted to be good for at least 5 years. I am tired of buying a new system all the time and losing $$ when I sell it. I really like the Cyberpowerpc Tracer vii.
At this point its less than a year till 5000 series is out and anything above 4060 is a waste this gen
You can say that about every generation to be honest. I've bought a laptop on each generation from the GTX 1080 onwards, usually at the high end and you lose about $1000 every time you sell them on. Therefore, my Rtx 4080 laptop is going to have to last me at least 5 years which I believe it will. My GTX 1080 laptop still holds its own, even at QHD.
4080 for the win!!!
Yay!!
Yep. But the price difference between 4070 laptop and 4080 laptop is literally 70% more (my laptop costs me $2295 (4070) vs $3677 (same model with 4080))
Wow i just got a 4080 on sale at best buy for 2000$.
Get a Desktop with 4070ti. no brainer.
Just got a 4070 for 980$ WTF
I'm sick of 300 nit monitors. I mean granted I would mainly play this in a hotel room, so probably enough, but I feel like they should all gave 500+.
I've never had any issues with 300 nit monitors
Do 4070 16gb
8.
ASUS ROG Strix G614J Gaming laptop Core i9-13980HX RTX 4070 240hz 32GB 2TB SSDs or MSI Vector GP68HX i9 12900HX RTX 4080 175W 16GB 1TB FHD+ 144Hz Gaming Laptop
I got a g16 with rtx 4070 and 13980hx but selling to get a 4080 version as its a massive difference between them
Yes, definitely a noticeable difference.
Also the price. Especially given the 4070 laptop is 6-10% faster than the 4060 laptop but 30% more money and given the 4080 laptop is a worse 4070 desktop die the prices are bonkers
@@mddunlap03 the only metric the laptop 4080 is worse than the desktop 4070 is 1% lows and min frame rates. To the tune of 12%. I suspect because of dynamic boost. Comparison video being uploaded tomorrow
The gap is huge however its doesn’t make 4080 cheaper. Nvidia purposely made 4070 as less attractive option. It’s more like 4060ti
*4050ti

I really appreciate not using upscaling. Nvidia and AMD are full of poop with these weak ass cards.
4070M is one of the worst value GPUs of all time, along with 3050 ti and 3080M 8GB. I talk everyone out of buying it. Basically Nvidia tries to sell us the crappy 4060 ti (which everybody hates on desktops) under 4070 name. Demand begets supply, so the more people buy this GPU, the more Nvidia will be encouraged to give laptop users worse specs and prices than desktop users.
I agree, the 4070 makes little sense to me at this price level. The 3070Ti laptop I just sold was just as capable at a cheaper price
I don't see the point why the 4070 doesnt have rather a 1080p screen and 144hz and a reduced price
It's better that u included BfV instead of just brokenfield 2042
Lol, Brokenfield 2043 😅🤣. I also played BF 1 and the servers were full ! Yes, it definitely should be cheaper. Legion used to have the 3060 with the same resolution, people just knew you had to lower settings or manually chose 1080p.
4070 mobile fits 1080p perfectly. There is a MSI Katana boasting 4070 and 17" 1080 screen priced about $1.5k on my market.
@@3axapvlad Yeah, but the katana version is maxed out at 105 watts for the rtx 4070, I don't know if MSI issued a new vbios update. And a rtx 4070 has enough CUDA/RT/TENSOR cores to get a bit better performance when allowing a higher voltage, thus higher boost clocks and thus higher wattage. Most rtx 4070 (and also 4050/4060) laptops are capped at 0.9 volt (my previous laptop asus tuf a15 2023, some are allowed to 1 volt Asus rog strix g16 (my current laptop).
Got a great 4070 laptop for 980 after tax
Did you get used? Most 4070 I see on best buy are 1500plus. And where to get these kind of offers?
