Igloo, chain chomp's gate, KtQ and baby penguin stars are all possible with just joystick and A, and no stars are impossible cannonless. Also To the Top of the Fortress is impossible since you need to beat Whomp to unlock the fortress

Backward movement speed is not capped in Mario 64. The shell just provides a convenient way to move backwards since long jumping, the conventional way to move backwards, is not allowed here.
Perhaps not all of the remaining 100 stars require the A button directly, but I'm guessing the A button is needed to complete the first Bowser level to unlock the remaining courses.
well... it doesent require an a press, only bowser in the fire sea requires an a press to get of the pole the first time but that a press is being heavily worked on and is probably gonna get save in a few months
Wehn making a TAS, decisions are made on a frame-by-frame basis. When something doesn't go as expected, the TASer undos one or more frame to possibly fix the mistake. As you never see this mistake happen as it's edited out of the recording, it is a re-record.
No, you can't use a cannon either, because you need to hit A to launch. Unless I'm missing something, Wing Cap can't be used without the A button, so it wouldn't be helpful for this TAS (with the obvious exception of the Wing Cap star)
i believe he got the shell on a specific seam which allowed him to collect speed as he moved along on the shell, letting him clip thru a wall and go fast enough to get to an island you usually have to cannon or wing cap to. but i'm not sure lmao

I have seen some many runs of this game like beaten with 0 stars, or speed runs them self, but this was by far one of the best runs I have seen.

When you dive by pressing B, you have to Press A to roll back up. Which is what the TAS did.
You can use B to do a DR.

wasn't that sound of goomba noticing Mario?
A specific example is at 4:55. You hear mario's "Wah" sound from when he jumps twice. I don't think goombas make that sound
Maybe somehow those glitches triggered an autojump? I don't know
I believe the shell actually does that on its own when you ride it off a ledge.
