Well Glenn, then you'd know that to bump the CP2's power up to CBR650 levels that they'd had to sacrifice it's massive low end torque advantage. The CP2 blows the doors off both the CBR650 and RS660 at everything under 8k rpm, which is the vast majority of real world riding.

The subframe looks different than the mt-07 in side-by-side shots. I'm curious about how much they've carried over from the mt-07 other than the engine.
Basically a middle bike right between the R3 and R6. I think its cool. Definitely not a full race bike like the 600's. More of a street bike with fancy suspension and sport ego's and slipper clutch. It would be amazing if they made a super moto model. 700cc twin super moto! That would be rad.
Power figures don't bother me as long as it handles and stops better than the competition. It was enough when i had my MT07 for lots of fun on the streets and didn't get left behind on group rides.
Given the rule changes to the super-twins/light weight class racing to 700cc max on the engines, I wouldn't be surprised to see Yamaha start releasing race kit parts towards the end of the season next year or have them ready for the start of the 2023 season.
can expect it is soft on top-end, but based on its sporty setting, it will still be fun on low speed track, street ride wise should be easy with the decent low end torque. 2-cylinders and 4 cylinders are a trade in, you get cheaper price tag, lower weight without compromising price tag, and low-end torque, you lost nice engine rev sound and high speed thrilling. in a nutshell, you get cheap and good thing but no more hardcore, its like a trend in many fields.

With the tuning capabilities that were out for the Late R6, and the updated ecu for the R7, what are the chances it is undertuned for the market to be legal in more territories, but can be "unlocked" via a tune? As stated above you would have to be a very simple person to believe just adding more cylinders is the best way to make a bike fast. No offense Bro.
Agreed... I like the blue but need to see it in the metal to be sure! Motorcyclist Magazine have been riding one today.
Kawasaki fanboy here.... this bike is sexy! You really can't go wrong with the style. Dayum!
so aprilia rs660 is selling so well Yam scrambled by adding some parts bin upgrades and cheap plastics. bravo to the marketing execs, but shame it's not a proper track bike that could compete in the motoamerica twin cup.
It's not for competitions 🤦🏻♂️. The r6 is still there to take care of that on track . Yamaha needed sales and I guess it's going to sell well because the price point is pretty good .
@@10daysAgo they are not making the r6 anymore tho.
@@mr.smirnoff4317 who said ? They are making it still , only for tracks .
Get a Rx7 instead
Yup they are still making r6's track only version
I was hoping they had squeezed a few more hp from that engine, with some more revs. I'm sure it will be a fun bike, but a bit lacking in the high revs, for a sport bike.
Btw, I have a Tracer 700, so i know well that engine.
I was hoping that the r7 would be closer to 90-100hp to compete with the rs660 and a more relaxed rider triangle
Nothing will ever beat the Original R7 as a one off. In my opinion the original will always be one of the most iconic 750cc superbikes of all time. Especially with Haga being the the pilot.
Great take using the MT-07 platform. Has to be in blue - it’s a Yamaha!
To me it seems like it's ergonomics are too aggressive for the street and power is too low for the track. The rs660 seems much more appealing. If they made an R9 with 115hp then I'd definitely consider upgrading from my mt07
That’s what r6 makes full bolt on around 120’s
@@rawonboard7831 that's why an R9 would be a perfect replacement now that the R6 has been discontinued. An R6 with all the added low down grunt of the mt09 sounds amazing.
Yuuuup. I've been saying this for month. The type of person that wants a sensible, fun engine like the cp2 does not want to ride in this aggressive position.
This bike will flop. No one is going to buy it. It's a massive compromise. Uncomfortable and under powered.
@@IRLtrolls yeah I love my mt07 and I think the engine is brilliant. But it's no supersport engine. I think it would have made more sense to put on some higher handlebars similar to a ninja 650 so it's at least more comfortable while still being sportier
Just got a 2021 ninja 650, wish i saw they were releasing this! Still love the ninja
looks nice but they didnt bump the engine up, i expected it to be more like 85-90 hp.
Except for the quick shift and abs it looks like no more electronics, a few modes would be nice.
And the ergo's look like it belongs on the race track and not on the road (my opinion)
it only has the better price than the rs660 but less power, less electronics and the ergo's are to agressive
I never had a sports bike, but this could tempt me as a second bike, or a good deal on a Kawasaki as that will be good enough for me. Look forward to seeing one join the field at the IOM Lightweight TT, when you watch it you realize this is all you need for the road.
The subframe looks different than the mt-07 in side-by-side shots. I'm curious about how much they've carried over from the mt-07 other than the engine.
It is, good eye.
Almost no one talk about this
Think I'll keep the original thanks
Basically a middle bike right between the R3 and R6. I think its cool. Definitely not a full race bike like the 600's. More of a street bike with fancy suspension and sport ego's and slipper clutch.
It would be amazing if they made a super moto model. 700cc twin super moto! That would be rad.
Power figures don't bother me as long as it handles and stops better than the competition. It was enough when i had my MT07 for lots of fun on the streets and didn't get left behind on group rides.
I'm just waiting for triumph to release a new supersport using the 660 trident engine, the triple sound would sell it to me more than a twin.
I've never been excited about anything Yamaha has built, but I like this one!
Lol seriously ? Never been excited when the 2009 R1 was released ? Never been excited when the v max was released ? Never been excited doing wheelie on mt09 ??
This guy lives in a cave...
Your strange.
The R7 is the best pick!
Seems strange how they've discontinued the R6 for the road, but kept the MT09, so makes you wonder why they didnt base the R7 on the MT09 engine for that extra power??
It's because less and less people look for power, and go for the more reasonable and cheaper choices.
@@DoctorStrange01 fair enough bud but youd think with a sporty seating position like what the r7 seems to have, they may have upped the power a tad from the mto7
@@AJBAdventures I think there will be more to come in the future, they might slap a bigger engine on a bike and call it R8 or R9, if they think that's something people will buy. Who knows. R7 is just a faired MT-07 with some tunes, it won't ever be a sportsbike. More like a sporty tourer.
Mann i was about to cop and mt09 sp soon, guess i gotta wait longer to check this out too first haha.
Why? The power of the mt09 is leagues above this
@@IronGuardLegionnaire because i don’t particularly care about power man. Speedlimit is 100k anyway in my country, so If its more fun to ride ill get that. If the mt09 is ill get it. Sv650s only have 72 hp but are a stupid fun little bike. All my old Z1’s from the 70’s only make about that and they are beautiful bikes to ride, you cant replicate them. I honestly think its pretty stupid to see people riding r1’s etc on the road because you’re uncomfortable and you wont use 1/4 of the bikes power, so whats the point? If its more fun (which it probably wont be) 72 hp is more than enough for me man.
I would love a R7 and a R9. I have many I4 bikes, V4s, a couple triples and various twins (not HD). I4’s with one exception are all track bikes.
The R7 is down on power compared to the RS660 but I can live with that.
which one's the exception?
Think it looks bloody great! 👍🏻 Love the concept.
Great review. Nice bike but I can't get past the running light screwing up all the shots. I suppose it's a nod to the MT-07 but all the competitors look better because they don't have that thing in the middle. And BTW I actually dig the new MT-07 front lights ✌
1:10
With identical figures? That's a shame
A bike for track/twisties doesn't need torque at 2500 rpm
New cams and valves to tune it for stronger mid range & top end (for aprox 90 bhp) would've been a welcome change.
Couple that with an autoblipper and you've got a proper track weapon.
I'm 90% sure that'll be this bike's doom
That's what I'm thinking its not a rev-happy engine
I think itll do well in the learner restricted markets. But theres not many 689cc mt07s in my country because its really not that much of an upgrade over the learner version. Id say yamaha ought be cautious with that yeah. The price had better be comparable to the mt07 to be competitive. At the same time remember the sv650 has been insanely popular for years and thats similar specs and a really torquey engine.
I was so excited for this bike until I saw that honestly 95 hp would have been perfect I didnt want to be sold a fully faired MT-07 with no changes...
I just bought a cbr650r 2020 and was thinking of trading it in for this bike, but my cbr has 94hp and with a power commander and an akrapovoc full racing exhaust, it’s an awesome bike. It’s I think it’s about the same price, but I’m glad I’m sticking with my cbr650r. I would’ve loved to have an R7 had it bumped up specs a little.
@@jsarwari5556 dude tbh I’m gonna probably go with a CBR650R like why go with this bike seriously?? Idk even discounting the Honda tax this new R7 is such a disappointment I don’t want a “super sport” with 72 hp that’s pathetic
An inch or two higher clip on, taller screen, and full system exhaust with ecu remap, then it's perfect for me
Sounds like a tracer 7.

Blue, finally a middle weight bike that will keep you in a realm of reality on the road!
Finally someone who understands.
I would go for the blue. I have always been a fan of the R1 but not experienced enough to handle the hooligan nature of the R1. I think r7 would be right for me, its not to powerful yet its more than enough for a person like me
Certainly it is a Super bike for the masses & for those who cannot afford to buy a v4.. & we all know most of us can't even scratch the surface of 600 cc superbikes like r6, zx6r etc,600rr.. Just saying.by the way.. clever approach by Yamaha..i hope it grabs some of market share..

72hp? I think it'll be more than that! That engine is gonna be completely retuned..I expect Yamaha to put out around 90-100hp as they are chasing Aprilia.. Anyways great review n I can't wait till June 6 2022..thats my target date..cheers!!

To answer your question is to capitalise on a2 market like the mt07
@@carlosandleon that's xactly my problem. Why it's not a supersport when it should have been!
@@Krishnendu792 This is the faired MT-07 that people desperately wanted. This is not the R6 replacement and never should have been a supersport at all. This bike is meant for the segment it's supposed to compete in.
This is like complaining you got a cat when you wanted a dog. It's not comparable.
@@carlosandleon see man. I get your point. But in my opinion yamaha should not have killed their legendary middleweight supersport. This category is dying. But everyone just wanna milk A2 category.
This is an amazing bike and I am really looking forward to seeing how it performs because while it is not as powerful as the R6 in terms of horsepower, the R7 it makes its power much lower in the rev range and it has a comparable level of torque. With that being said, the bikes are also very similar in weight, height and length so I am curious if Yamaha worked some magic to make this bike faster than the R6.
Great vid. We're excited for this one too!
Oh hello! :)
Yeaaaaah this just made my decision even harder for my next bike. I love the styling because I've always loved the R6 and when it was revamped I fell even harder for Yamaha.

The R7 was the grail. Pick another name for this bike!
I agree,,they should call it r27 for it parallel twin engine instead of 4inline like the old r7.
They were never gonna do that unfortunately.
R series for track amd mt for street that's their strategy and this bikes main aim is to fill the gap between r3 and r1 and also to take on the new aprilia rs660.

It look pretty. And from the look of it, it does scream 'R6 replacement'. But maybe just me.. 73hp is too low, to replace 115hp+. I was hoping Yamaha to bump the power close to cbr650r, and rs660. Around 90hp or so. Havent ridden MT07 before so maybe it is just fine.
i have a mt07 and i love the power and torq but as u say 85-90 hp would be nice on a supersport to give it that little extra over the mt
I have mine on pre-order in the States. Though it says June instead of October, and the msrp is about 9000 USD.
With the tuning capabilities that were out for the Late R6, and the updated ecu for the R7, what are the chances it is undertuned for the market to be legal in more territories, but can be "unlocked" via a tune? It would be awesome if this is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Overall it looks nice, I know narrow is more aerodynamic, but it does kinda look like the R3 which arguably resembles a scooter bike with fairings. Granted i am a tall guy so my opinion is biased.
YZF-R7 vs RS 660??
Blue for sure!
How does this compare to the 4 cylinder R6 tho?
R6 gonna run circles on a track around that funny r7... esp in hi revs.
Still I would say that CBR is the good option that's my opinion...R7 looks dope bt for me CBR will stand out

G'day BOB. Looks like another good on the market, it'll sell well. Thrashing is silly speeds is it not!!!!
Despite Aprilia being the most expensive one, it would be a big mistake not to choose one instead of the others, I think $2000 will be well spent for a new motorcycle.
I like the blue , so blue for me!
It's a nice looking thing. The worst thing about the MT range was the messy looking engine so now it's faired over, it doesn't annoy me as much.... I'm old enough to remember how special (if ultimately a bit pointless) the old R7 was, I'd be fuming if I owned an original and from now on people will think your talking about a version of the MT when you mention it. I'm a fan of black but I'd have this in blue as the black looks a bit boring for some reason.
