I remember catching this when it initially aired on TV: My parents let this then-eight-year-old "stay up late" to watch it and I was glued to the program. Hard to believe it's been forty years ago... Thanks for sharing! -Kent
I was 8.. and I made sure I was up to watch this.. back then I had no idea what they were talking about as far as the business side of things, nor did I care.. all I wanted to see was KISS.
This 20/20 show in '79 was the epicentre of KISS awesomeness for me as a 15 year old. I had just seen the Dynasty show in Toronto and knew that album word-for-word. It was the pinnacle of a fantastic summer before I had to meet life's grown-up realities. I watched it on an ancient 18" b/w analog TV with a 13-channel dial selector that made a clicking sound when you changed stations, no cable in those days. Just a rotor and antenna, a wonderful time in Kisstory.
I had a neighbor that passed away in late 70s I think 1979. That display that they show of dynasty album cover was given to me by the guy I was very lucky and fortunate that the guy knew I loved kiss. I've never seen that display in any other videos but this one.
Self appointed critics always sneer and deride anything they personally don't like or understand. Beethoven had his critics too. I'll bet nobody can name three of them.
"Paganism for pubescents?" Not surprising such a clueless comment came from a Rolling Stone writer. As someone who grew up in the '70s, I was a huge KISS fan. And though I loved "Dynasty," I lamented its "Super KISS" look and that the band's sudden appeal to kids and families. Nothing wrong in seeking new fans, but they just lost something at that point, IMO. Thanks for posting this!
International Amphitheater September 22nd 1979 I was there right under the massive ball that dropped all the kiss sponges to steal a line from Barnum & Bailey The Greatest Show on Earth long live the Fantastic Four
I don't know how you could compare a band like led Zeppelin who created great rock and roll to a band like kiss who wrote songs like call me Dr Love I mean listen to that song it is total trash there is no redeemable quality to that song whatsoever and if you think it really does then I guess that's your opinion but really give it a listen to and tell yourself what's so good about that song what makes that a great song I mean it's forget it
I was 13 in 79. I went to a Halloween party dressed as Ace. I was told if I had stayed until the costume contest, I would've probably won. But I was young and dumb and full of c....chasing those girls!!!
Classic video! Hugh Downs at the end is beside himself, having “lowered” himself to open and close the segment! Love it! Not shown on this version….he takes a deep breath and says….”Okay…we’ll be right back”. Awesome!
I was born in 1977 & when i was old enough persay to listen to them i had “KISS” posters all over my bedroom walls & Gene Simmons is one of the bassist's as to why i picked up a bass guitar at the age of 15/16yrs old 🤘
According to a Gallup poll Kiss was the most popular rock band in America in 1977 ......by late 1978 most of the fans who followed them since '74 had checked out and had moved on to other bands.....especially after the solo albums came out. By 1979 the median age of a Kiss fan was 12.....whereas just 4 years prior most Kiss fans were between the ages of 15-25. What a difference a couple of years make......by 1980 they couldn't fill an American stadium anymore......by 1981 they were almost completely washed up. Then starting in late '82 they slowly began to climb back in popularity but would never come close to their hey day which was late '75 through early '78.
not true, in 1996 they sold out Tiger Stadium in ten minutes. they were the highest grossing live band of that year. they were back in full force for that reunion tour.
I'll bet Charles M Young no longer works at Rolling Stone, hell, Rolling Stone barley exists anymore, but almost 50 years later we still have KISS. They should've quit 20 years ago but they've still out lasted the critics
I'm curious to know what happened with the Cincinnati thing ? think i read they fired Glickman, however the band was in alot of turmoil at this point... thanks for another cool video \m/
Glickman and Howard Marks were let go in 1988. Bill Aucoin was let go earlier, in 1982 when The Elder tanked. The shit hit the fan in 1987 when they owed millions in back taxes. The Cincinnati property was sold, as well as their song catalog to pay their tax bill.
And two years after this, KISS couldn't get arrested. They were so unpopular, if you said you liked KISS, you were laughed at and ridiculed. Most people thought they weren't even together at that point anymore. The only media they could get was the occasional mention in 16 magazine. So high to so low in such a short time was spectacular.
Just my opinion, KISS was a great band from 1974 to 1978. These are the albums that are official in my opinion. 1. Kiss 2. Hotter than Hell 3. Dressed to Kill 4. Rock and Roll Over 5. Alive 6. Destroyer 7. Love Gun 8. Ace Frehley - Kiss Solo Album They can make one 'best of' album with tracks from Dynasty, Unmasked and the 3 other solo albums to cover 1978 to 1980. I really like 1981's The Elder but it's not a KISS album. After 1980, KISS really doesn't exist anymore. They are just another forgettable 80's hair band after 1981. KISS only in name.
They had a relatively great success in the 80s thanks to Eric Carr with albums like Creatures of the Night and Lick it Up. But yeah nothing compares to the 70's Kiss' best era.
Five dollars in 1978 is the equivalent of almost $23 now so the programs were a rip off then and now it was a lot of money then and now for something that should cost five dollars today and should’ve been a dollar back then so that man has every right to complain
My 4 year old grandson is infatuated with KISS. He doesn't watch cartoons in the morning anymore. On a side note. Hugh Downs died in 2020. Coincidence? I think not.
I think I know what happened to rock and roll I mean when I was 7 or 8 years old I watched a band get on stage called The Beatles and then when I think about an 8-year-older getting his first taste of rock and roll and it's kiss I think that's the difference and that's how the quality of music went down the toilet
ah, back to the days when Paul would toss the shattered guitar into the crowd....before they figured out that the lemmings would pay thousands of dollars for the pieces.
Wow kiss is so so sinister and evil...lol. They have the nerve to play garage music in makeup and sell things to u? I’m really shocked thatABC TV didn’t win a Pulitzer Prize for this amazing piece of journalism...lol
@@phillynott2459 I mean, now I appreciate their whole catalogue and it’s diversity. But the Dynasty era was a huge mis-step on their part, and cost them a lot of their fan base
A downturn. They went crappy for a few. Came back on Creatures & Lick it up. But the magic was gone. The early albums was the Golden age. Kiss thru Rock n roll over. Most of love gun. They were putting out too much material so it got Thin!

That's the consensus by far.
The point that Paul Stanley admitted that KISS was turning into a circus show not Rock band lol!!!
"The end of the original the true and the great KISS"
Saw this as a 10 year old back then and its still awesome. Have owned the original pinball for 30 years now, still stare at it like a 10 year old..
Memories, At 15 I went to the '79 show in Chicago. Opened by Judas Priest.
Where at ?? Aragon or something? What an epic show! My first show was ozzfest 07 at tinley park at 14

Nightmarish lmao. Making me sit through a John Denver concert now that would be a real nightmare.
Intetesting they show Move On and New York Groove on this version.
Really high quality.
Gene spits blood and fire. Ace’s guitar bursts into flames and Paul wiggles and prances.
I was in Haughton La when this aired. I had tickets to see this show 4 months later....awesome!!!
I was at that show. The Richfield Coliseum!!
must have been awesome. I saw them that tour in Providence RI
That Rolling Stone guy has no clue what constitutes great Rock and Roll!!!
that's why he's a critic, because he doesn't have the talent himself to do anything.
