The 90's Gamera trilogy are some of the best kaiju movies ever made.

Gamera the Brave could use some more love. Especially if you're a fan of Showa Era monster films. It's pretty much that with modern production values.

Gamera in general needs more love
I think I like the shlocky shoa era gamera more than the 90's gamera. Blasphemous I know, idk something about a Godzilla vs. Hedorah-esc fever dream is fun.

The Daimajin Trilogy! All three films were made back to back in 1966 with the third installment being ultra rare. These films may not actually fit into the monster sense but they do showcase a giant menace on the loose. People get trampled. Buildings and pagodas crumble. The special effects are spectacular and in some parts, scary. Daiei Studios finest hours can be seen with Daimajin, Return of Daimajin and the superb Wraith of Daimajin.

The Magic Serpent, Gorgo, and Rodan would be my picks

  • @TheRealMonsterD
    @TheRealMonsterD 7 лет назад +4

Here are three picks from Monster D:
    1) Daimajin 1-3: There are three movies in this series, each of them stand alone and each of them fantastic. They may be in contention for being the darkest kaiju films after the original Gojira. And the feudal Japan period setting is a nice change of pace.
    2) Dogora: Toho's first space monster! This movie is more like a crime or heist movie with some monster action thrown in. But it's fun to see almost every technique possible used to bring the various versions of Dogora to life. Actually, I think the only thing they didn't use was a guy in a suit!
    3) Monster X Strikes Back: Attack The G8 Summit: A loose sequel to the 1967 film, X From Outer Space. This one plays much more like a comedy and parody of both classic kaiju films and of political nonsense. The actors, particularly the various government officials, put on TERRIBLE performances. But in an odd way, this helps to spoof the world leaders even more. The monster action is top notch! This came out in 2008, but they go out of their way to stick to 1960's era effects. It's a loving homage to all things kaiju! I won't say why, but it makes a great chaser to Daimajin!

I've got one for you: Deep Sea Monster Reigo Vs. Battleship Yamato. RUclips user KaijuNoir did a review of this movie, and from what I've seen of it, it's actually pretty damn good! It's hard to cross a War genre movie with a Kaiju genre movie, but this film pulls it off (Yamato was a real battleship. It's in the Guinness Book Of World Records as the largest battleship ever built). However, be warned: this movie is EXTREMELY hard to find. KaijuNoir apparently had to go to a bootleg website called Showa Videos in order to find it.

3 obscure non Godzilla kaiju movies movies I would recommend, would be
Gappa (which was called "Monsters From A Prehistoric Planet" on my old DVD copy),
Zakorr the Invader (A low budget American movie from the 90's that I rented as kid on VHS)
King Kong Lives (The god awful & forgotten sequel to the 1976 Kong movie)
Otherwise 3 not so obscure non-Godzilla Kaiju films would be
    Gamera 2 Attack of Legion
    War of the Gargantuas
    Tremors

Since it's incredibly hard to find any-thing a dedicated kaiju fan doesn't know of like autocomplete, I'll pick some that are at least less than obvious, and have stayed with me.
1 - Tarantula. Despite the block if not wheel of cheese it represents, the spider crawling the countryside at night is just creepy, and it's death by napalm is off-putting.
2 - Godzilla Raids Again, original version. Watch the original, and watch your hate for the 2nd B&W film evaporate.
    3 - Daimajin series
4 - Gorgo - A western kaiju film so good, it got remade in Japan as Gappa
5 - Guilala/X From Outer Space - The setting somehow overcomes the Spore-bred Turkey Buzzard Kaiju
6 - The Black Scorpion - more verve and effort than a film like this would be expected to deliver
Here's one: I use head-canon to make Giant Claw watchable. I just tell myself that the monster
tried to form a body using an Earth bird, but had no concept of what one would actually look like, hence its goofy form. Two, if your plane was about to be downed by this thing, or if you were about to be eaten alive, would how goofy it looked matter to you at all?
So what head-canon makes the spoiled cream of this crop watchable for you?

For the first one, I got to go classic:
King Kong (1933). Wonderful stop motion animation, and a wonderfully realized prehistoric world.
Second going to be an odd one. Somewhat obscure. It goes by the name Night of the Demon, or Curse of the Demon. (1954) Like Kamen Rider J- the giant monster elements are VERY limited to just the beginning and end,(its not really a very sfx heavy movie) However its a scary movie about an intense battle of wills between a professional skeptic and a modern day sorcerer. It served as partial inspiration for Sam Rami's Drag Me to Hell.
Third: Is a movie that fans of MST3K might recognize: The Black Scorpion. A somewhat under rated entry in the giant arthropod movies of the 1950's. Again, some really good stop motion animation and you get to see some of the creatures from the King Kong's lost Spider pit sequence.
For honesty's sake- I'll say that except for Kong, those last two really wouldn't be my favorites. (Really , anything by Ray Harryhausen would bump them off the list) but I wanted to tell some people about some films that don't seem to get talked about a lot.

Gorgo: It's the British attempt to replicate Godzilla down to the rubber suit and miniature technique but takes story ideas from King Kong, then adds their own twists.
Beast From 50,000 Fathoms: I need to watch this myself, but thanks to being one of the inspirations for Godzilla we should all catch it.
Ultraman: The Adventure Begins (aka Ultraman USA): Because I needed at least one animated offering (me being me) and one I'm sure Matt would approve. Before teaming with the Australian studio they attempted to work with Hanna-Barbera to produce an animated series about three Ultras battling monsters. The pilot movie (miniseries in some markets) never made it to full series and it is rather dated but it was my introduction to the Ultraman franchise. HB does some good monster designs since they've had plenty of practice, but going with Filmation (who had done live-action sci-fi in the past) might have been a better choice.

One huge credit I will give Pacific Rim credit for is it shown that live action Mecha movies can be done in amazing detail. Franchises such as Evangilion, Macross, aquarion, and another live action Gundam movie. G-Savior was good quality but poor script back in the day but Gundam deserves another chance. Hopefully Gundam wing. Hell Patlabor even got the live action format and actually looks good.
Space amoeba is a classic in its own mainly because it has Haruo Nakajima the original Godzilla actor who also did Mothra. The movie is also a Toho production. I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned.

Just stumbled onto this video, and I’d like to make a contribution to the discussion!
    1. Fantastic Planet-now many people won’t really count this as a giant monster film, but I absolutely think it is. It’s a strange animated picture from France featuring giant aliens who keep humans as pets and has tons of weird monsters that appear throughout. Absolutely worth watching for open-minded giant monster fans.
    2. Attack of the Super Monsters-this one is relatively well-known, but is sharp in my mind because I just recently watched it for the first time. It’s four episodes of a tokusatsu show slammed together into an incoherent and bizarre film which combines animation and models and suit action with terrible dubbing, and also has the rex from The Last Dinosaur as the main baddie! I loved it.
    3. Grabbers-an Irish giant monster movie featuring an alien menace of tentacled beasties, this humorous film is not great, but it’s amusing, and I love the unique setting. I’d especially recommend it to fans of films like Tremors or Critters.
Honorable mention: not a giant monster movie at all, but I don’t see this one getting much attention: In the Hero. This is a live action movie that based on a manga about a guy who plays the stunts in Super Sentai style productions. The movie ain’t half bad, and I recently read the first volume of the comic and really enjoyed that too.

1 War of the Gargantuas_ THESE MONSTERS HAVE CHARACTER! And a lot of it too in this action packed Kaiju film. It is actually a tragedy in my eyes, and thats because this film was written by Tekashi Kamura, who's life turned out to be a tragedy as well. I recommend you read up on his life story. But he always had the idea of making the monsters the focal point of the story. And this may have been his greatest yet. The music is very well done and fits the movie. Overall this movie was hardly ever slow. Lots of monster action, deep soundtrack and tokusatsu effects elements are what brought this 5 star movie to life. I say its a masterpeice.
2 The Atragon_ While the beggining is slow, the rest of the film is action packed with beautiful practical effects and sets, especially in the Mu Empires' dwelling. The beggining introduces the the protagonists and the threat. AWESOME SOUNDTRACK! Theres a lot of tension that builds up to the more interesting parts of the movie. But once the Atragon takes off, you're left in awe by the spectacular tokusatsu effects. The Atragon is attacked by Manda; the Golden sea serpent and pet of the Mu Empire. Over all this movie is forgivably slow in the beggining, and took my breath away with its surprisingly higher-than-normal effects by Toho.
3 The Mysterians_ Great visual effects. While there really are no KAIJU in this film, it is known for the introduction of Moguera, a giant robot the aliens use to take over the world. Great soundtrack by Ifukube. There are lots of plots to take down the Mysterians' base, they attack it with missiles, an aerial assult and much more, but the best part by far is when Moguera attacks the village in the beggining. VERY well done effects in that sequence, but he does make a return... sort of. Overall a fun, well paced Tokusastu 1950s sci-fi extraordinaire!

Ok, so obscurity is what you're looking for. No need to bag on lists for not having that. Yeah 3 is lazy though.
Based on your last recommendation, I'm going to recommend Crank 2 because near the end, the movie randomly busts out a giant monster fight complete with dudes in suits. Its great.

  • @strikerevimus

I know of a few American kaiju films. Not the best ones, but still worth a watch. The Beast from 40,000 Fathoms is an interesting film, something of a stop motion prototype for Godzilla. Conventional weaponry doesn't work on it. Second is THEM!, a film about Ants that get grown to giant size by a Nuclear test. It's bad enough that it was riffed on MST3K. Then there's the original Korean film that was remade into the hilariously bad CGI film starring a NOT-DeForest Kelly as a Scientist, Reptilicus. That film being of course, Yongary. Basically Korea's attempt to cash in on Godzilla as the title monster is giant a fire breathing dinosaur that was reawakened by nuclear tests. Huh, beginning to see a theme here... It also has a bit of Gamera flare to it, but didn't manage to gain sequels like that one. There are only two films in the series, both completely different in design and story, though Yongary has a few similar powers in both films. Ok, so that's kind of a cheat there, but they're worth a watch if for nothing else than the sheer mockery potential. They also have no sequels though you get the idea they had left room for potential sequels.
Also, I have seen Kamen Rider J, and it can be found here on RUclips. You just have to be pretty determined to find it. Good film like you said, very light hearted and over-all pretty fun. Just a slight correction, there are two other instances beside the one you mentioned where a Rider went Jumbo sized. The first I think post J was a crossover between ZO and J where J grows in size to fight a now Kaiju sized Shadow Moon. IT's a less than ten minute short, and likely non-cannon. The second is a crossover between Kamen Rider Ichigo and believe it or not, Ultraman. Not cannon to my knowledge, but still interesting and also a less than ten minute short. Yes, the very first Rider also gets the chance to grow Kaiju sized Ultra style more or less.

1: Pulgasari (even though it's produced by Kim Jong il)
2: Pumpkinhead (if you count it as a kaiju film)
3: Gorgo (a weird but fun film)

The first one that comes to mind is THE MAGIC SERPENT (1966). They used to show it all the time on Philly tv back in the 70's but then not so much in the 80's. I read somewhere that it was a movie that influenced George Lucas. They released it several years ago on dvd along with Return of The Giant Monsters (Gamera vs. Gaos). Definately worth checking out!!!

Gonna go a little rouge here!
    1. The Lost Continent (British film including; ship mutinies, shark attack, bizarre sea creature fights & cute damsels!)
    2. The Last Dinosaur (US/Japan co-production... Sotra a Kaiju flic if it had been written by Jack London!)
3 The Mist (US Film. This is what happens when Stephen King sets out to make a Bert I. Gordon movie!)

I'm only gonna say 1, since pretty much every Kaiju movie has been said except this one, Daigoro vs Goliath. It's a nice little kid's Kaiju film that feels a lot like the Showa Gamera films except with a lot less plot. You can (As of right now) actually find the whole movie on RUclips, I recommend it for some light-hearted Kaiju fun.

I don't if these are obscure but I really enjoy them.
    1. Big Man Japan (Probably the most bizarre kaiju film I have ever seen and it's very funny.)
    2. Valley of Gwangi (I've always loved Ray Harryhausen films so it was hard to choose just one but this is great since it's essentially Dinosaurs vs Cowboys.)
    3. Gorgo (Godzilla's english cousin. A very good film.)

I only have 2, both most people know of, but I want to recommend them none the less.
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. It's not good, but it's one of the first Kaijuu films and it has some charming stop motion used for the monster.
Rodan. It's an interesting film that establishes Rodan before he was rolled into the Godzilla universe.

Mine are a bit unconventional, but I still think they count!
    • EVANGELION 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
It’s an anime, sure, but the creator, Hideaki Anno (who co-directed Shin Godzilla ) was heavily influenced by media like Ultraman and Godzilla to create the original series. This is a reboot of said series, but it’s a beat by beat recreation of the first five episodes, thus a good introduction!
    • TOKYO Abandonment Order GARATEIA
This is a short film that I love. It starts out as a classic kaiju rampage film, but it ends with a cliffhanger hinting at a sequel with a Zone Fighter/Ultraman-esque hero!
    • Atragon
More of a super-battleship film, but I’m a sucker for those, and besides, it has Manda, so that’s something!

Matango just for weird creepiness of it. Daiei's "Yokai Monster" trilogy, another series that's hard to come by but it's enjoyable, Spook Warfare is the best of the 3. Lastly Daimajin basically Godzilla in feudal Japan.
I also recommend Pulgasari and if anyone wants more info on the director I would recommend this book: A Kim Jon Il Production: The extraordinary true story of a kidnapped filmmaker, his star actress, & a young dictator's rise to power.
