      They're only obsessed with tentacles because you can't show the thing connected to testicles. Wouldn't that be something, to see Godzilla attacked by a monster with multiple you know whats, kinda of like some of my ex girlfriends.

    Man, Biolante just looks phenominal. The movie comes from that sweet spot of the late 80's just before experimentation with CGI started up in movies, and practical effects were at a level where they looked really, really amazing. And it's helped by the fact that she's not an obvious guy-in-a-suit monster, really helps sell the thing as alive.

    Wow. GMK is kind of a shock to me (as a very, very casual kaiju watcher). Japan (or at least the filmmakers) actually take ownership of the terrible things they did during World War II. That's...that sort of social responsibility is so darn rare, and so darn praiseworthy, I don't have words to describe how impressed I am.

    To explain the time travel plot in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah:
    -future people say "we can get rid of Godzilla" and go back in time, teleporting the Godzillasaurus off the island and into the bering sea and leave 3 Dorats on the island.
    -Problem: Future people thought that the Godzillasaurus was the 1954 Godzilla... who was killed by the oxygen destroyer.
    -Miki senses Godzilla, despite the fact Godzilla "should" be gone.
    -Turns out a russian nuclear sub crashing in the bering sea and created the 1984 Godzilla.
    -The nuclear sub thinking they were going to irradiate a dormant dinosaur instead runs into an AWAKE but tired Godzilla, who destroys the sub and absorbs the nuclear energy, getting rid of the Anti Nuclear Energy Bacteria in his system.
    -The japanese defense force just takes all the blabbering that the future people mention at face value.

    Actually, Godzilla rising up from the ground in Mothra vs Godzilla DOES make sense. That area was originally flooded due to a typhoon. Godzilla was washed up along with it but knocked unconscious and got buried from all the debris. Hell, they even discover one of his radioactive skin particles and trace it back to that area!

    The popular theory among GFans for Godzilla's arrival in "Mothra vs. Godzilla" is that he was just there during the mentioned typhoon and got covered by earth and debris. Either he was hibernating (a la "Sea Monster") or like a bison in a snow storm, it's just beneath his notice and he slept it off. That's why he doesn't truly pop up from underground. He just knocks the dirt off himself.

    The Heisei series as a whole is my favorite because it represents a continuum of movies years before the MCU was even a thought. That and the leap in effects make it the ultimate Godzilla experience. Of these, my high point would be Godzilla vs. Mecha Godzilla II.
    My favorite singular movie though is Final Wars which acts as an end cap to the entire Godzilla franchise much the way Endgame completes the Avengers. Ironically, I also like this film because it's a good jumping-on point for newbies as the story is mostly non-canonical while still providing a lot of fan service.

    Seriously, Biolante is heavily underrated. A great design and a fairly good movie. As a diehard Godzilla fan, I do have to say thank you for making this list. My personal favorite film is Godzilla vs. Destroyah. Why I like it is because it wraps up the Hesei era so well. I got into Godzilla watching the Heisei Era(though, I like the Showa era movies as well). The film manages to connect plot points all the way back from Godzilla vs King Gidorah in a plausible method. Also, Destroyah I consider to be Godzilla's strongest enemy. No offense to Gidorah(who is my favorite enemy monster), but when this creature packs the Oxygen Destroyer(one of the few things that can seriously injure Godzilla), yeah that's quite a threat. I also disagree with you about Godzilla not defeating Destroyah. While I would have liked to see it, I interpret the scene as the human characters finally taking a more proactive approach, signaling that they don't need to heavily rely on Godzilla(especially considering he is dying).
    And symbolically it represents how man in this case triumphed over the beast. But that's just me. Overall, great list. Love that you included some really underrated movies like The Return of Godzilla, which is another favorite of mine.

    @goji3755 9 лет назад +7

    Excellent tribute, Brandon! As a life long Godzilla fan myself, I'm in agreement with a lot of your list, even the placement of the 2014 version. I can still remember how everyone in the theater broke into thunderous applause whenever Godzilla arrived on screen, and when he used his atomic breath. I probably would have included the 90's Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla in place of the 70's one, though. I love its intensity and the theme for the new MechaGodzilla. Also the fact that they introduce a new version of Minilla that is actually kinda cute (and that we later see the new son grow into a pretty formidable young Godzilla) is a major boost. I also would probably have put GMK a LOT lower on the list. I admire it's uniqueness, and I like what they were doing with this movie, but I found the battles stacked WAY too heavily in Godzilla's favor for them to be interesting beyond the first viewing. I know a lot of people despise the beam-heavy battles of the Heisei series, but at least his enemies always seemed like they had a chance of winning. In GMK there's never any doubt, and once the effects loose their luster you can get pretty bored by how one-sided the action is.
    The time travel plot to Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is VERY poorly explained, at least in the dubbed version. I've heard every kind of misinterpretation from "it completely rebooted the Heisei timeline" to "the sub transformed the dinosaur into Godzilla." The truth is actually much more basic than that, you just have to look for the clues in the other films of the Heisei series. There's an article I found on ScifiJapan.com that explains it all titled "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah: Time Travel and the Origins of Godzilla." It's a very interesting read, if a bit lengthy, but the gist of it is that the Godzilla that first surfaces in 1984 was born BECAUSE of the Futurians' mission to the past, and that everything that happened before Gvs.KG is still in place.

    Godzilla 1998 might not have been the best movie, but the cartoon follow-up definitely captured the spirit of the Toho films and Zilla Jr definitely earns the name “Godzilla”. If you haven’t watched the cartoon give it a shot, it was made by G-Fans and it shows.

    Godzilla 1954 is.. just.. it's truly unbeatable. I know, the whole concept was supposedly inspired by "The Beast of 20,000 Fathoms" (which I also really like) but something about the darker tone, the horrors of war, etc. just goes to show that this is not just another monster movie. Honestly, in my opinion, if a giant monster such as Godzilla were to appear in real life, I actually kinda think that the way the people in the movie reacted would be realistic. They did a great job.
    P.S. I'm talking about the Japanese version.

    Some quick notes for you: Re: vs. Destroyer- Godzilla does kill Destroyer. The army just shoots Destroyer down. Godzilla maintains his position, superheating the ground. The sudden difference in temperature from super-cold to super-hot finally destroys Destroyer. In the Japanese dialogue, they mention that "Godzilla isn't moving" when Destroyer falls. It may still not be satisfying, but it's Godzilla's actions (or inaction) that ultimately kills the evil monster.
    Re: vs. King Ghidorah- A new Godzilla isn't created. He's still the same Godzilla from 1984. All the future people wound up doing was creating THIS Godzilla. A nuclear submarine in 1977 hit the Godzillasaurus and mutated it into the Heisei Godzilla. The nuclear submarine they send in this movie's events re-energizes Godzilla and grows him from 80 to 100 meters. This is glossed over in the dubbing, but explained much better in the Japanese dialogue.
    Re: Godzilla 1985- Roger Corman had sold New World Picture by 1985 so he had nothing to do with the film.
    Re: vs. Mothra- Godzilla comes out of the beach because he was washed ashore along with Mothra's egg by the hurricane at the beginning,

    No love for "Terror of Mechagodzilla"? I think that's the best of the '70s films. "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" has some great cheese, but "Terror" was that movie except more serious. Plus, it features one of Godzilla's best entrances and he has to fight two monsters without a tag team partner.

    • @henrykujawa4427
      @henrykujawa4427 2 года назад

      Apparently, they knew it would be the last for awhile, and set out to return the series to its "serious" roots... or, at least, as serious as the better episodes of "ULTRA MAN", which tended to be written better than the monster movies were.
      Around the same time, came "ULTRAMAN LEO", the most downbeat and VIOLENT of all the early ULTRA MAN series. It took forever for the hero to get good as being a hero, and the series seemed to end on a high note after 39 episodes. But someone decided to do a 2nd season, and in episode 40, KILLED OFF 95% of the regular cast, including Dan Moribushi (Ultra 7!!). I kept expecting him to turn out to be alive, but after 12 episodes, the 2nd season ended prematurely with Leo RETIRING from being a hero. WTF?? Like Godzilla, the Ultra series took a break for about a decade after that. (I haven't gotten around to seeing the later series yet.)

But the few mistakes it did make were pretty glaring ones, which is why I don't count it in my personal top 10. I don't think it's any better or worse than say... Godzilla vs Biollante. Both are great installments in the series... they just have certain problems that relegate them to the "good, not great" branch of the franchise as far as my personal preferences are concerned.

    Hey Brandon, congratulations on your first million viewed video! Big fan, hope you keep going for years to come; and while I'm not a ninja wielding garden shears, I couldn't help but notice there are Godzilla movies on this list you haven't properly reviewed yet. You should celebrate by finishing off the list, and then all of the Godzilla movies, and then produce some new Godzilla movie so you can review those too. Godzilla Vs. Deathstalker is the film franchise people don't know they need

    I remember my mom renting Godzilla 1985 for my 10th birthday a long time ago. I watched it over and over and over all night. Loved that movie.

    In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, the movie did something (as far as I know) a little different. During a Godzilla attack, a pilot or a driver of a Mazor Cannon, went through PTSD after surviving a Godzilla attack.

    To all people who say zilla is realistic, he's not, in fact he is less plausible than godzilla. The idea a theropod would get a manlike posture through atomic mutation is incredible unrealistic but the idea that an Iguana could get a theropod stance is insane. Plus nothing that big could hide that well, go under the sewers and move that fast. This wouldn't just be the case if it was the size of a building but a sauropod sized zilla would still be slow as balls. Lastly most of you push realism onto zilla but hate dinosaurs with feathers, meaning that you don't really want accuracy you just want boring uninspired jurassic park clones and you often defend jurassic world's featherless raptors despite your precious realism. Lastly an animal such as godzilla running from the army would be like a lion running from a mouse that but it, plus intelligence and invulnerability are part of the character.

      The only evidence they have four feather Velociraptors is one fucking bone they found in China which they can't even prove belong to a velociraptor since they found it by itself away from any kind of full skeleton which had three bumps on it that they assumed to be quill knobs. One God damn bone!!!

    10:04 So here's a question; in the original Godzilla, Dr. Serizawa destroyed all of his notes regarding the Oxygen Destroyer and even if he had some leftover he kept it locked up in a metal crate which was then locked itself. So the question is, how is it possible that a monster was created from the Oxygen Destroyer 41 years after it was originally used. And, again, even if Dr. Serizawa made more than what we saw in the original film, he kept it locked up in a metal crate and then locked up the crate in metal locker and furthermore he burned all of his notes. So, even if there was still some of the Oxygen Destroyer leftover there's no way anyone would be able to get to it. And even if Destoroyah was created after Dr. Serizawa used the Oxygen Destroyer the first time in 1954, then why didn't he show up until 41 years later in 1995?

    Originally in Godzilla versus destroyer and also within the comic book variation which still actually has this ending whenever Godzilla melts down he actually does get to be the one who deals the final blow to destroy as that he grabs on tight and sort of a death squeeze as he ignites and and takes destroyer with him to death just thought I'd mention it for those who'd be interested to check out the comic book variation of the film cuz they do finally deliver on that
